Week in Geek #132: Sif Returns for Thor 4, Daredevil in Spider-Man 3 and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Sunday, December 13, 2020

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Alfred Molina, Kirsten Dunst, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield AND Charlie Cox for Spider-Man 3

We're getting Doc Ock, Mary Jane, both Peter Parkers AND DAREDEVIL for the next Spider-Man movie!!!! WHAAAAAAAAAT?!

I still don't get how they're going to cram in Peter's secret identity issues and being on the run from the law while dealing with all this multiversal stuff, unless the plot is that there are multiple Spider-Man people and that's how they get around it and Doctor Strange fixes it all and makes people forget Peter is Spider-Man. But yo! Daredevil is going to be his lawyer!! That's crazy!

Can we get D'Onofrio as Kingpin?! Is Jessica Jones going to be part of the mix?! What does this mean as far as setting up different versions of Electro, Octavius, Mary Jane and so on?

Disney Investor Day 2020

Most of the content from Disney Investor Day was broken down on this podcast. Check it out here if you missed it.

Jaimie Alexander's Sif Returning to Thor: Love and Thunder

Hell yeah! I hate how they killed off the Warriors Three and Heimdall over the past few movies (particularly how quickly they just knocked off the Warriors Three, as Heimdall at least had a decent sendoff) and I've been annoyed at how there wasn't any explanation given to why Sif was missing for all of this. She was definitely replaced by Valkyrie in more ways than one, but I like Sif. In fact, I think Sif is a better love interest than Jane Foster. I'm hoping Sif has a decent enough purpose in this and that they don't just unceremoniously kill her off or anything. Give me an explanation for her absence during all the events that went down, too.

The Mandalorian: The Believer

This wasn't my favorite episode of the season so far, but it was still good. I liked the look into a different side of the Empire with the southern general being not entirely wrong (about the New Republic being a mess and some people wanting order more than anything else). I liked seeing that Boba Fett's cleaned up his armor even better than it looked in Return of the Jedi.

Cool moments here and there, but it felt like a step down from the past few that we've gotten.

Clarice

How did I not know there was a television series coming out in February about Clarice from The Silence of the Lambs until now? What?

The teaser doesn't really show much at all. However, I'll be checking it out. It's either great like Hannibal or it's awful and I shut it off after one episode like Ratched.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Hailee Steinfeld is FINALLY Confirmed as Kate Bishop in Hawkeye

After all this time of denying it, they've finally flat out confirmed that Steinfeld has been cast as Kate Bishop for the Hawkeye series on Disney+.

About time.

Discovery+

Disney announced it will be launching a "discovery+" (lowercase on purpose) streaming service starting January 4, 2021.

It's set to feature 55,000 episodes of content from networks like HGTV, Food Network, TLC, ID, OWN, Travel Channel, Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. Basically, it's lumped together all the stuff like Ancient Aliens and Pawn Stars along with Planet Earth, the reality shows about awful people you find on TLC like the parents who try to live vicariously through their kids and the ones who think their wacky families are interesting, so on and so forth.

I'm not signing up for it, but I like the idea. This is the future of this cable/streaming battle. ISPs are going to just basically be telecommunications services providing the internet connections (eventually, probably merging with the phone companies, too) and televisions are just going to be even more so computers which stream things. Cable packages will be converted over to lumped platforms like this.

Disney owns a ton of assets. Not everyone is going to sign up for Disney+ itself because they don't want to see The Little Mermaid and the MCU films and whatnot. But there's ESPN for sports and there's these "learning" shows (if you can call them that) which a lot of people have lots of crossover for. Chances are, if you watch Pawn Stars, you watch Storage Wars. My fiance watches 90 Day Fiance and its surrounding shows, for another example.

This just makes sense.

HBO Max Going TO THE MAX

Warner Bros is going to do the Wonder Woman 1984 release method (in theaters at the same time as HBO Max) for ALL their movies for 2021.

This is huge. This is basically WB saying "You know what? Screw it. Let's get as many people as possible to subscribe and if it fails, it fails, but at least we'll have tried. The onus is on us to test this out."

Credit to them for not rolling over anymore and just hoping things go back to normal. However, it's understandable why theater chains are pissed about this. The less need to go to a theater, the less people will go. It's just a fact. However, if people aren't going to begin with, what's better? Doing that and having some people go, or continuing to have NO no releases and hoping people see garbage films that no one would have seen to begin with on a non-pandemic schedule?

Mandalorian: The Tragedy

Boba Fett is cool again! He's been restored! They managed to rewrite part of Star Wars history that was pretty bleak, as he looked awful in Return of the Jedi and it seemed like he never amounted to jack shit. Now, we see that even years after this, he's a total bad ass.

I didn't expect Mando's ship to be blown up. I figured Grogu would be captured just to up the stakes, but I never imagined the Razor Crest would be completely eviscerated like that. Maybe the reason why is because they want to give him a bigger ship with a bigger cockpit so he can have more characters inside to interact with?

GoldenEye 007: More James Bond Characters Who Should Have Been in the Game

Posted by Anthony Mango - Monday, November 30, 2020

After writing up this post wondering why Jack Wade wasn't featured in any fashion in the GoldenEye 007 video game for Nintendo 64, I started thinking about other characters that were included in the game. Somehow, we have Oddjob and May Day, but no Jack Wade. It seems odd, as he's an actual character in the movie, while the legends characters aren't even from the Pierce Brosnan era (as he had only done one film at that point).

This, in turn, led me down a path of thinking about other characters that could have been included in a similar fashion if they had the cartridge space, the development time and wanted to add more characters.

That is what we'll be discussing here as we discuss more characters that would have been interesting to add into the game's multiplayer system.

James Bond 007 GoldenEye N64 box art

Jack Wade

Again, he's already been discussed here. However, for the sake of being complete, I needed to put him on this list. Moving on!

Bond Villains

Dr. No = Put him in the black gloves and the collared shirt, but maybe not the hazmat suit. He's the first true villain of the series (at least in the films) and his inclusion makes perfect sense.

Red Grant or Rosa Klebb = Klebb is the more interesting choice, but they can't really make a shoe-stabbing mechanic for the game specifically for her. Grant is an easier character to model as he's just another stock male figure with a few tweaks.

Ernst Stavro Blofeld = Specifically, the version from You Only Live Twice. I suspect one of the reasons this didn't happen was all the legal nonsense going on with the character and Thunderball/Never Say Never Again that was still prevalent at the time. One problem I do see, though, is that his outfit is very similar to Dr. No and that might be a bit confusing for people, so they might have to pick between the two. Assuming you can't do Blofeld for legal reasons, go with No. If you can do Blofeld, go with him and maybe give No his hazmat suit so people can tell them apart.

Francisco Scaramanga = You've got the Golden Gun in the game! Why is Baron Samedi the one in that level? This guy is a guarantee on this list and I'm happy they added him to The World is Not Enough.

Franz Sanchez = This is my biggest stretch, by far. However, I just love License to Kill so much and since he was the most recent villain before this—as well as one of the more brutal ones—he'd make for a cool evil character to choose.

You might be asking yourself why some people aren't on this list. Obviously, characters like Aristotle Kristatos just aren't popular or memorable enough for anyone to clamor for. Someone like Emilio Largo would be an odd choice to have walking around shooting people. Brad Whitaker isn't memorable enough and clearly, Joe Don Baker isn't allowed to be in the game, for whatever reason, but I was tempted to put Necros in there if not just to have exploding milk bottles.

Others already have characters representing their films. No need for Goldfinger, as we have Oddjob. May Day takes over for Max Zorin. Baron Samedi throws Mr. Big / Kananga out of the mix. Jaws takes care of Karl Stromberg and Hugo Drax.

I gave a lot of thought to adding Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd to the list. However, I ultimately decided against it for a few reasons. That would mean 2 characters filling up spots, which is precious real estate. Plus, while they're memorable, I don't think they have anywhere near the same level of interest that some other characters have. Oddjob is iconic, while Wint and Kidd are footnotes in comparison.

Just for argument's sake, if we were remaking this game today, we'd also have access to characters that came out past GoldenEye's release. Obviously, they never would have included people from Tomorrow Never Dies into the game since they couldn't see the future. However, if we could make this an all-inclusive Bond game of all stars, here are some other villains I think could be included:

Renard = Maybe, if it doesn't mess with balancing issues, he's even harder to kill?

Colonel Moon / Gustav Graves or Zao = Definitely not Mr. Kil. Zao makes for the more interesting visual, so I'd lean more toward him.

Raoul Silva = Very cool former agent.

Mr. Hinx = Giant Dave Bautista makes sense.

Bond Girls

Ideally, there would also be more female characters to choose from. There are only a few in the game (Natalya, Xenia, May Day and the extras). So let's add some more, shall we?

Honey Ryder = White bikini, rather than what she wears at the end of the film.

Jill Masterson or Pussy Galore = Galore makes more sense as she's the more capable of the two and action-oriented, but it would be kind of neat to have a completely gold-covered character representing Jill, wouldn't it?

Fiona Volpe = Badass sexy villain with some action going on. Sign me up. She's awesome. Love her character. You're also not going to find Helga Grandt on this list because she's just a discount Fiona, and because I think you should include...

Aki or Kissy Suzuki = Give us a Japanese character on the list. For my money, Aki is so much better than Kissy Suzuki, but I can see why they'd want to go with her instead.

Mary Goodnight = She's a ditz, but she's also an agent.

Anya Amazova = Agent XXX is a must for this list. Give her the outfit she wears at Stromberg's place.

Dr. Holly Goodhead = Above everyone, Holly is perhaps the absolute best pick for this list. She even could have appeared in the Aztek level, as that was inspired by Moonraker. She's a competent CIA agent who kicks some ass in the film.

Melina Havelock = I'm not big on Melina, but my bias shouldn't disqualify her. In fact, maybe they could have even had a crossbow weapon in the game to replace one of the least interesting guns like the Phantom (which looks cool, but does anyone really ever use it?)

Pam Bouvier = Another obvious pick as she's an agent and gets her hands dirty. Let's go with the short hair design.

The main ones who didn't make the cut for me, but I had in my mind at least temporarily, were Paula Caplan from Thunderball (already have Volpe), Tracy from On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Tiffany Case from Diamonds are Forever as well as Bambi and Thumper (just no), Solitaire from Live and Let Die (not a fighter) and Octopussy (just not engaging enough outside her name).

Now, once again, if you could look ahead into the future and add other Bond girls from movies that came out after GoldenEye, some other candidates would be:

Wai Lin = Duh.

Cigar Girl = More eye-catching in her red jumpsuit than Christmas Jones and more action-oriented than Elektra King.

Jinx Johnson = She's an NSA agent. Duh.

Camille Montes = Bolivian agent and definitely on the action side of things. No iconic design and not a beloved film, though.

Eve Moneypenny = Keep her away from shooting James Bond though!

Those are my lists, but who else do you think would make for interesting additions to a James Bond multiplayer lineup? Drop your thoughts in the comments below and tell me which characters you'd pick to play as!

GoldenEye 007: Why is Jack Wade Not in the N64 Game?

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, November 28, 2020

GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64 is my favorite video game of all time and among the best ever made. Even with some of its technical flaws and how viewing it from a modern perspective makes it look dated, the game holds up as being a masterpiece of its time and still has so much replay value and lessons to teach.

However, we've all praised GoldenEye constantly. Sometimes, it's more interesting to pick apart the minor problems, if not just for a different discussion. That's what I'm going to do here as something recently struck me as quite annoying:

Why is Jack Wade not in the game?

There's this weird thing about GoldenEye (the movie) where Jack Wade comes in to replace Felix Leiter as James Bond's CIA contact ally. It's somewhat understandable, as the last time we saw Felix, his wife was killed and he was fed partially to a shark. He's probably no longer an active agent.

Wade is played by Joe Don Baker, which is odd, since he was one of the primary villains of just TWO films ago, Brad Whitaker. But that's not where the weird stuff ends.

Remember how Bond gets that car from Q with the stinger missiles behind the headlights? Do you remember what he does with it in the film? Nothing. The car chase is actually Bond inside of a tank (which is in the game in not just Streets, but also Runway, replacing the motorcycle, which is odd, especially since the bike was rendered and in the code but not accessible to ride). Bond tosses the keys to the car to Jack and tells him not to push any buttons. Wade laughs, drives off and that's about it.

I think we're missing a level here. They couldn't have created a whole new driving mechanic for a car chase or something, but this game took liberties all over the place with the story. Bond never went to the bunker in Severnaya, for instance. There are two Surface and Bunker levels along with Silo. What is Caverns, exactly?

So while I agree there should have been a Casino level, I think there also should have been a better version of the Jungle/Caverns setup and Wade should have been part of it.

The mission should have been something like Beach. Perhaps it would have involved you setting up some kind of rendezvous with Wade and then passing information along to him so he can get it to the military guys that pop up later.

But even if that couldn't have been practical to add that sort of level, the very least that should have happened was for him to be a multiplayer character. Take a variation of Zukovsky, slim it down a bit, craft Baker's face as close as you can get it, slap on the patterned shirt and light pants, give him his hat and you're good to go.

In a game that has so many characters to pick from, even if they were small parts of the film (helicopter pilot) or not in the movie at all (Siberian Special Forces), Jack Wade is the most glaring omission. He's not even a character like Anna that wouldn't make sense as a playable role. Wade is a CIA agent. He should be able to handle a gun and shoot people and such.

I'm assuming it has to be a likeness rights issue, but I hadn't come across that information when I was playing this as a kid, so it always felt strange. Why would they not be able to lock that down when they could with everyone else, as well as people from previous Bond films? Baron Samedi is in the game with an Egypt level and the Golden Gun and none of that makes any sense, but Jack Wade isn't in the game in the movie he was a big supporting character for?!

Crazy. Toss out your theories and thoughts in the comments below.

Week in Geek #130: The Mandalorian Jeans Guy, Ahsoka Tano, Grogu and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, November 27, 2020

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

King Kong vs Godzilla Heading to Streaming Service?

Rumor has it they're shopping around putting this film on a streaming platform after realizing how movie theaters still aren't going to have guaranteed people back to normal any time soon.

I think this feels like the type of movie you can't really watch at home. While many movies could work just fine on Disney+ or Netflix or HBO Max or whatever, this doesn't strike me as one of them.

Jeans Guy Removed from Mandalorian

They've edited the last episode of The Mandalorian to remove the crew member who was accidentally in one of the shots. Take a look. RIP Jeans Guy. You'll be remembered in the same vein as the Starbucks cup from whatever Game of Thrones episode that was (I didn't watch the show).

Speaking of The Mandalorian...

How cool was this last episode? I'm not a big Ahsoka Tano fan, having not grown up on The Clone Wars or anything, but it's abundantly clear over and over that Dave Filoni would have been a better choice commandeering this franchise instead of Kathleen Kennedy and her group. He at least respects what's come before him while making additions, rather than going "Screw that, mine's better, even if it's exactly the same but without the nuance and value."

They filmed her intro like she's the creature in a monster movie. That's great. That's some Phantom Menace opening scene stuff.

I'm not a big fan of the idea of "find Ahsoka and she'll refuse to train the kid and tell you to find a new Jedi" angle. But hey, Baby Yoda is named Grogu. I dig it. And they name-dropped Thrawn!

Man...it's a shame none of this matters because The First Order just destroys everything, sends it all back to the days of The Empire and renders the entire series up until that point moot, right?

Week in Geek #129: Project 007, Franklin Richards is Not a Mutant and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Sunday, November 22, 2020

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Lethal Weapon 5

Mel Gibson says Lethal Weapon 5 is still in the works with Richard Donner at the helm. Very cool. I'm down for it. The movies aren't Oscar-caliber, but they're quality entertainment and I'm curious to see where they take the franchise. Do they have kids who take over, for instance?

Franklin Richards Isn't a Mutant

Marvel has retconned the idea that Franklin Richards is a mutant by making it so, as they've stated, his cosmic powers made it seem like he was a mutant because he wanted to be special.

While I'm not super duper into the reasoning behind it, I'm all for Richards not being a mutant. The less crossover, the better. In my mind, as much as I love the X-Men series, I think a lot of characters are better off NOT being mutants. In fact, I wrote an article about it. Check it out here: https://www.fanboysanonymous.com/2019/06/x-men-characters-who-should-not-be.html

Batman: Soul of the Dragon Trailer

For a one-shot, this seems neat. I'm not normally into the whole "wouldn't it be interesting if X took place during a different time period and that's the one and only hook to get you to watch this?" type thing. I'm also not into the 70s culture. However, the idea of a story where Batman teams up with Bronze Tiger, Richard Dragon and Lady Shiva is interesting. I'll be checking it out in January for sure.

Wonder Woman 1984 Streaming on HBO Max & Releasing in Theaters on December 25th

They finally caved and announced they'll be releasing Wonder Woman 1984 simultaneously in theaters on Christmas as well as streaming on HBO Max. It's about time. This movie's been pushed back so many times that it became the new New Mutants in a way.

Funny enough, I just watched New Mutants and it was HORRENDOUS. Also, all signs point to the leaked script of WW1984 being real and you know what? That script was not doing it for me. So I'm anticipating this will be a bad film that people will be more excited to see just because it's a new release and they'll be starved for content, so they'll overrate it just like the first Wonder Woman.

Project 007

A video game is in the works, dubbed Project 007 for now, which will revolve around James Bond earning his 00 status. I'm down for that. Many Bond games over the years have been rubbish, though, and they haven't been able to replicate the success of GoldenEye or The World is Not Enough. I'd like to see them go back to that sort of formula while incorporating some more modern mechanics while not getting bogged down into the problems of what some post-2000 games tend to get messed up by.

With that, I mean you shouldn't feel like the game is there only for multiplayer, you shouldn't have to do quicktime events as some forced linear trajectory, there should be a distinct ability to see what's going on in your surroundings rather than to make things dark and dour where you NEED some sort of night vision goggles or "detective mode" stuff to navigate, and you shouldn't focus so much on cut scene cinematics and graphics that you sacrifice the gameplay just for some impressive trailer visuals to sell the game. Also...no DLC that you have to pay for just to make the game worth buying in the first place. Give people a game that they can enjoy and love from the start and that word of mouth can make it a classic, rather than a cash grab capitalizing on the popularity of the character just to make a quick buck.

Also...and it goes without saying this, based on the way No Time to Die is marketing itself as the end of James Bond and the transition to a new 007...if this is your attempt to wrap up the James Bond story and to move on to Nomi, you're going to be screwed.

Another Predator

10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg is going to helm another Predator film. Frankly, I think they've said all they need to say.

I just actually watched Alien and Aliens for the first time this week. Decent films, but overrated in a sense that while they were great for their times, they don't hold up as much anymore to a modern viewer. Predator does the same. But I think there's only been one good Predator film and I doubt this next one will be anything that impressive.

Wonder Girl CW Show

Wonder Girl is getting a CW show. Pass. I haven't watched any of these shows in a long while cause they're all the same and none of them last more than a season before they get too derailed.

Week in Geek #128: Scream 5's Title is Scream and More

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Slow News Week

I'm actually publishing this late because there was NOTHING going on that I felt like talking about.

Sasha Banks on The Mandalorian

Finally got a chance to check out the latest episode of The Mandalorian, which featured WWE's Sasha Banks in a role that was basically 2 lines of dialogue. I'm not at all surprised she was limited in that capacity, but made out to be a bigger deal. That tends to happen a lot.

Cool that they've brought more characters from other media into the live action. I'm a fan of that, even if I'm not big on The Clone Wars series and such.

Scream 5 will be titled Scream

What is up with this trend of naming sequels the first movie? Why do we have three "Halloween" movies, for instance? I get if it's a reboot, but if it's a sequel (like how this is Scream 5) then why are you calling it the same as the first movie?? This is one of the most baffling things that has been a trend in recent cinema that I can't wrap my mind around. Just call it Scream 5 or some kind of subtitle. Also, calling something The ___ isn't a big difference, either, a la The Predator. Take 5 minutes to think of a proper title.

Week in Geek #127: Loki Season 2, RIP Alex Trebeck and More

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Loki Renewed for Season 2

We haven't even seen season 1. Hell, I don't even know WHEN we're going to see it. But if it's that good that they're confident people will want a second season, then that's cool.

RIP Alex Trebeck

TV icon Alex Trebeck, host of Jeopardy, has passed away at age 80 from pancreatic cancer.

Awful news. I was never the biggest Jeopardy fan in the world where I watched it every day/week or anything, but it was one of those cultural institutions like Wheel of Fortune and Price is Right where I don't think there's anyone who dislikes that show. Trebeck was the host for so long that he was almost like a fixture of pop culture and not having him around like that anymore is yet another big loss from 2020.

The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 2

Chapter 10 wasn't as great as the previous episode, but it definitely had its moments. The Child eating the eggs was perpetually cute/funny. I enjoyed seeing Dave Filoni back as the X-Wing pilot giving Mando a break.

Thumbs up for the episode, but it felt a bit rushed. It was almost as if the episode was just getting started 3/4 of the way through and then had to skip to the end super fast.

Week in Geek #126: RIP Sean Connery, Big Brother 22 Finale and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Sunday, November 1, 2020

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Oscar Isaac Cast as Moon Knight

I'm not all too familiar with Moon Knight. I couldn't tell you even all his personas without looking them up. Marc Spector is the only one that comes to mind. But this character has always seemed kind of cool to me and if I were into reading comics, I'm sure I would have done a deep dive at some point. The problem with my connectivity is if someone isn't in film or television or some other media like that, I tend not to know them well enough to know where to start, so I don't get into them. Such is the case with Moon Knight.

So I can't tell you if I think Oscar Isaac will be the best person for the role. What I can say, though, is that Isaac is a great actor and I think he could probably pull off 9 out of 10 roles he's cast in. He's handsome, so he has that down. And if Marvel, who has been so good at casting most people in the MCU, thinks he's the right man for the part, then he's probably the right man for the part. Very cool.

Big Brother All-Stars 2 Finale

My two favorites going into this season were Cody and Enzo, so I'm really happy they ended up in the final two. Cody deserved to win over Enzo, in my mind, but Enzo deserved that second place prize. Big fan of this outcome!

RIP Sean Connery

Sean Connery has passed away at age 90. Over the years, his reputation went downhill due to some controversial opinions (to say the least) and stepping away from Hollywood. But he'll forever be the man who brought James Bond to life, and for that, I think pop culture is forever grateful.

As a near lifelong fan of the series myself, Connery was never my absolute favorite Bond, but the one I would compare everyone else to, since he was the standard.

I want to make some sort of poignant "you only live twice" reference, but it just seems in bad taste. RIP.

The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 1

As underwhelmed as I've been with some of the Star Wars stuff as of late, to downright disappointed to a level where it really dwindled my fandom of the series as a whole, The Mandalorian has been awesome. This first episode was just that - awesome. Taking down a krayt dragon to get its pearl and to set up Boba Fett? So good!!

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Jared Leto Returning as Joker in Zack Snyder's Justice League

He'll be reprising his role in reshoots. This is good. Whatever they have planned will be interesting since this is a "what if" type of scenario.

Maybe Snyder (who has had plenty of error judgment calls in his own right, mind you) will fix the awful tattoos Joker had and pretend like they don't exist while giving Leto some better material to work with. I feel like he had the potential to be a solid portrayal if things had worked out differently.

Early MCU Characters Returning in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier

It was said that some characters from the early films of the MCU will make a comeback, but not which characters, specifically.

My running theory is that this is going to help set up Thunderbolts and we're going to see either Abomination or, more likely, The Leader, as one of those characters. Then again, we saw the "I'm not Tony Stark" scientist come back as one of Mysterio's crew, so you never really know which people are going to play a bigger part, surprisingly. Hell, the guy Bruce Banner gives pizza to ends up becoming Peter Parker's teacher and we've got Mandarin returning as part of Shang-Chi. Maybe this is going to be something completely out of left field.

Tim Burton's The Addams Family

Tim Burton is creating a new live-action television series of The Addams Family. This is like the fifth adaptation of the characters, or something along those lines. As far as I'm concerned, nothing tops the Christina Ricci and Raul Julia films, which I've been meaning to rewatch as I haven't seen them in probably 20 years.

But hey...maybe it will work. It may be on Netflix, so that could open up a better realm of storytelling than if it were on a network that would tinker around too much.

No Time to Die vs Streaming Platforms

Bloomberg says there's a chance No Time to Die is being sold to a streaming service. MGM says that the film is not for sale.

Frankly, I've given up keeping track of movie release dates. I'm really thinking nothing comes out at all until 2022 at this point, even, which is just horrendous. That, or everyone gets further along the "fuck it" scale and decides to just open everything up and the world collapses while we all goof off for what little time we have left.

Week in Geek #124: Marvel Legacy and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Sunday, October 18, 2020

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Marvel Legacy

Older Marvel films that aren't in the MCU are being classified Legacy titles for Disney+.

I like the name. It differentiates enough but lets people know it's not part of the same connectivity.

The Batman Set in 2019

Set photos have dated The Batman to take place in 2019. Now can we finally stop with the nonsense about this being a 90s film?

The Boys Season 2

I finally got around to finishing season 2 of The Boys. Called a lot of the finale ("I bet they're going to kill Ryan's mom so he'll have to deal with that while growing up" and whatnot).

The show's great, so I'm excited for season 3. I'd like to see Ryan somehow find himself as a member of The Boys. Give me more Esposito, as you can never have enough of him. But really, Homelander is where it's at. He's my favorite character, for sure.

Slow News Week

From my perspective, this was a rather uneventful week. Not much to talk about. As always, I'm sure I'm missing tons of things, so if you have anything in mind you want to pick my brain about, drop a comment below and I'll elaborate!

Game Plan: DC Ultimate Alliance Video Game Concept

Posted by Anthony Mango - Wednesday, October 14, 2020

Welcome to the first edition of Fanboys Anonymous GAME PLAN, where we take a film, television show or any kind of inspiration and we try to design a video game concept about it.

For the debut, I wanted to go with something on the simpler side in that we already have a template to work around and just need to adapt it in a different way. I knew just the idea, too.

Even as a casual gamer at best, I really enjoyed the first two Marvel: Ultimate Alliance video games and had always wondered what a DC version of it would be. What characters would you be able to select from? What locations would it span? Which villains would you fight?

Thus, I present to you...

THE DC: ULTIMATE ALLIANCE VIDEO GAME

DC Ultimate Alliance game

WHAT IS THE TITLE?

Obviously, the title of the game would simply be DC: Ultimate Alliance, if we were going with a direct equivalent. However, assuming DC were to make a game that's as close as possible to this, but not be able to get the rights or want to deal with any trademark/copyright issues, let's think of something else.

I'll spoil some of the story here and say that this isn't going to have parallel dimensions in it, so I'm not going with Crisis on Infinite Earths as its name. That's the sequel, much like how Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 was the Civil War story.

There are a few ideas I think could work, but they should all revolve around either DC Universe or Justice League. Here are some suggestions that all sound quite similar, so you get the idea:

  • DC Justice League United
  • DC United: Justice League War
  • DC: Justice League Crusades
  • DC: Justice League Crisis War

My favorite of the bunch is probably DC United: Justice League War. I think you could subtitle the follow-ups as DC United: Crisis on Infinite Earths and such. But this title goes with the theme of this first introduction game and story.

WHAT IS THE STORY?

Simplicity is key. That's why Marvel's first Ultimate Alliance game worked so well. It had tons of characters to pick from, lots of locations, a ridiculous amount of cameos and references, but a simple enough "fight the bad guys who are teaming up against the heroes" plot at its core. Even when it got confusing why Galactus was involved with Loki and Dr. Doom and all, it boiled down to just stopping the villains from taking over the universe.

The same should apply here, and we all know who should be behind this whole thing: The Legion of Doom.

Here's the overall pitch of the story in its raw form, without all the specifics:

The story opens with several cities under attack from a White Martian invasion. We play through the beginning level as different heroes, so we see Superman fighting them off in Metropolis, Batman fighting them in Gotham, etc. As this intro level progresses, Martian Manhunter gets everyone together to stop the invasion and they decide to form the Justice League (and there is a "super friends" joke in there, of course).

Cut to one year later, or a time skip somewhere along those lines. We have a group of our "core founding members" who had formed the Justice League: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter. They discuss how the White Martian invasion got not only them to form their own super group, but that other unions have been forming. There are bigger factions as well as smaller cells of villains who are now teaming together and such. It's not just the Bat Family anymore, as there is an Injustice League of some villain, they know the government has Project Cadmus and Checkmate as well as so-called Suicide Squad (officially Task Force X), Lex Luthor has created Infinity Inc to form the "Everyman Project", Bruce Wayne's public response is OMAC and Brother Eye spearheaded by Maxwell Lord, etc. They've even been hearing rumblings about a so-called Legion of Doom super group they need to be prepared for.

The Justice League has been doing recruitment procedures over time and has expanded its roster to dozens of different subgroups. For example, Dick Grayson is the leader of the Young Justice group called Teen Titans, because he's not only the most trained and best for the job, but he's able to connect with the youth and maintain their innocence.

Ultimately, what this boils down to is that Lex Luthor is working in coalition with Brainiac, Vandal Savage, Ra's al Ghul and several others as an Illuminati-like group called The Light to create the Legion of Doom and connect all their resources so they can take down the Justice League and control the universe. Darkseid is probably not in this group as he's far too dangerous. But we get a general game out of missions where your team has to investigate different attacks on locations, stolen artifacts/weapons, stop military takeovers, etc, just like Ultimate Alliance, with The Light being extinguished (at least for now) and the universe being saved.

LOCATIONS

Throughout the game, different levels take place on different cities, worlds and major DC landmarks, including, but not limited to:

Hero Bases of Operations:

  • Watchtower satellite
  • Hall of Justice
  • Happy Harbor and Mount Justice / Secret Sanctuary
  • Titans Tower
  • Bat Cave
  • Fortress of Solitude
  • Flash Museum
  • Oa / Mogo
  • The Quiver (I hate the Arrowcave name)
  • Tower of Fate

Other Locations:

  • Belle Reve
  • Blackhawk Island
  • Midway City
  • Central City / Keystone City - Iron Heights
  • Gotham City = the city itself, Ace/Axis Chemicals, Amusement Mile, Arkham Asylum, Blackgate
  • Nanda Parbat
  • Metropolis = Daily Planet, Stryker's Island, Suicide Slum
  • Warworld
  • Hall of Doom
  • Star City
  • Coast City
  • Peña Duro in Santa Prisca
  • Slabside Island
  • Apokolips
  • Blüdhaven
  • Amnesty Bay / Atlantis
  • Fawcett City
  • Hub City
  • Ivy Town
  • Gorilla City
  • Smallville
  • Kasnia
  • Qurac
  • Corto Maltese
  • Kahndaq
  • Markovia
  • Rheelasia
  • Themyscira
  • Source Wall
  • Kandor
  • Qward
  • Rock of Eternity
  • Phantom Zone
  • Speed Force dimension

You get the picture.

WEAPONS / ARTIFACTS

Some of the weapons or artifacts that are being stolen throughout the game so the Legion of Doom and other sects can amass power are things like the following:

  • Book of Destiny
  • Helmet of Nabu
  • Kryptonite
  • Miraclo
  • Mother Boxes
  • Phantom Zone Projector
  • Spear of Destiny

Transportation between levels for the Justice League is done through Zeta Beam or Boom Tube technology.

VILLAINS

You need to have enemies to fight. Not only would there be generic criminals, robots and so forth, there would also be named characters spread out, just like there is in MUA.

Groups:

  • Brainiac robots (my preference is that Brainiac is the Brain Interactive Construct version, not the green alien)
  • Checkmate
  • Court of Owls
  • Darkseid's forces including parademons, Granny Goodness with the Female Furies, Kalibak, Steppenwolf, etc. Desaad would be in it, but you wouldn't fight him, necessarily.
  • Fatal Five
  • Fearsome Five
  • Flash's Rogues Gallery
  • Gorilla Grodd and his forces
  • H.I.V.E.
  • Injustice League
  • Intergang with Bruno Mannheim, Morgan Edge, Whisper A'Daire, etc
  • Joker will have a whole circus of clowns and subordinate types like Rag Doll and Professor Pyg's Dollotrons and such
  • League of Assassins (I prefer the League of Shadows name, personally)
  • Legion of Doom
  • Leviathan (maybe)
  • Lexcorp robots and Infinity Inc
  • Manchester Black and The Elite
  • Manhunters
  • Nuclear Family (maybe)
  • OMAC and Brother Eye under Maxwell Lord's control
  • Roulette's underground fighting group
  • Royal Flush Gang
  • Task Force X / Suicide Squad
  • The Ultimen (manufactured superheroes from Cadmus)
  • White Martians
  • Yellow Lantern Corps (as well as possibly the Red Lanterns and so on, but maybe there isn't enough room for them in this game)

Boss Fights:

  • AMAZO
  • Bane
  • Bizarro or Cyborg Superman (no need to have both as a boss fight)
  • Black Adam
  • Black Manta with Ocean Master
  • Black Racer
  • Brainiac
  • Brother Eye
  • Deathstroke
  • Doomsday
  • Eclipso
  • General Zod
  • Gorilla Grodd
  • Joker with Harley Quinn
  • Lex Luthor in his kryptonite suit
  • Libra
  • Lobo
  • Mister Mxyzptlk
  • Mongul
  • Nekron and Black Hand
  • Ra's al Ghul and the League of Assassins
  • Reverse Flash / Zoom
  • Sinestro
  • Some kind of mystical threat (Morgaine le Fey, Mordru, Klarion, Enchantress, etc)
  • Starro
  • Trigon
  • Vandal Savage

Other Random Villains (not the big boss of a level, but still could be solo or working together):

  • Atomic Skull
  • Black Beetle
  • Black Spider
  • Blockbuster
  • Brain and Monsier Mallah
  • Captain Boomerang
  • Captain Cold
  • Cheetah
  • Chemo
  • Cheshire
  • Circe
  • Clayface
  • Clock King
  • Cluemaster
  • Copperhead
  • Count Vertigo
  • Deadshot
  • Despero
  • Despero
  • Doctor Light
  • Doctor Polaris
  • Doctor Sivana
  • Electrocutioner
  • Evil Star
  • Felix Faust
  • Firefly and Firebug
  • Gentleman Ghost
  • Giganta
  • Goldface
  • Killer Croc
  • Killer Frost
  • Killer Moth
  • King Shark
  • Livewire
  • Mad Hatter
  • Major Force (partnered with General Wade Eiling)
  • Metallo
  • Mirror Master
  • Mr. Freeze
  • Onomatopoeia (how fun would this be in the game?)
  • Parasite
  • Poison Ivy
  • Prometheus
  • Psimon
  • Riddler
  • Scarecrow maybe teaming with Doctor Destiny
  • Shade
  • Silver Banshee
  • Solomon Grundy
  • Sportsmaster
  • T.O. Morrow
  • Tattooed Man
  • Terror Twins
  • The Key
  • Toyman
  • Trigger Twins
  • Turtle (a super easy fight)
  • Ultra-Humanite and Titano the Super Ape
  • Weather Wizard

You'd think that would cover everyone, since this list is huge, but I'm still leaving out TONS of people.

PLAYABLE CHARACTERS

In an ideal world, we have TONS of characters to pick from, but not everyone can be chosen. You'll find plenty of names in the next section as cameos instead. Still, I wanted to incorporate as many as I could consider reasonable.

To help keep things organized, I've grouped characters into some different factions. Obviously, Batman belongs in the Bat Family, but since he's a core hero, you want to put him in there above everything else. Keep that in mind and don't think that I'm ignoring their ties to all the different units.

Also, naturally, every character would have a few alternate skins you could download. Superman would have the Electric Superman form, the black suit with the mullet, etc.

Characters in italics are ones that could potentially be cut if there were too many to pick from. Every character not in italics would HAVE to be in the game as far as I'm concerned.

Founding Core:

  • Superman
  • Batman
  • Wonder Woman
  • The Flash (Barry Allen)
  • Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
  • Aquaman
  • Martian Manhunter

Batman Family:

  • Nightwing (blue is default; alt costumes are red version, the feathery blue and yellow outfit and a Robin suit)
  • Robin (Tim Drake - I'd prefer Damian, but I want DC to let Tim become Flamebird. I don't like the Red Robin name. So let's keep Damian out of this game for now)
  • Batgirl (Barbara Gordon)
  • Red Hood
  • Catwoman
  • Huntress
  • Batwoman / Orphan / Spoiler (I like Stephanie and Cassandra, but they're not necessities. To be honest, I don't like Batwoman at all and think she's a pointlessly derivative lame character).

Justice League's Other Members:

  • Black Canary
  • Booster Gold
  • Captain Atom
  • Firestorm
  • Green Arrow
  • Hawkwoman / Hawkgirl
  • Hawkman
  • Plastic Man / Elongated Man
  • Shazam aka Captain Marvel
  • Vixen
  • Zatanna

Green Lantern Corps:

  • Guy Gardner
  • Jessica Cruz
  • John Stewart
  • Kyle Rayner
  • Simon Baz
  • Note: They probably would act all the same and just be different skins of the Hal Jordan character with some slightly different constructs, so it likely wouldn't be too hard to incorporate all of them. Alan Scott is saved for the sequel game.

Outsiders:

  • Black Lightning
  • Katana
  • Metamorpho

Superman Family:

  • Steel
  • Superboy (black shirt and jeans is default, 90s look is an alt skin)
  • Supergirl (Power Girl is an alt skin)

Teen Titans:

  • Artemis / Tigress
  • Arsenal (Red Arrow works, but Speedy is a dumb name)
  • Aqualad / Tempest
  • Beast Boy
  • Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes)
  • Cyborg
  • Kid Flash (Wally West) or Impulse (Bart Allen) or my preference, having it be Impulse as a name and design but the Wally West character under the mask - could just be alt skins of Barry, though
  • Miss Martian (could just be an alt skin of J'onn)
  • Raven
  • Starfire
  • Wonder Girl (could just be alt skins for Diana that are Donna Troy and Cassie Sandsmark)

I say that's a pretty healthy crop of characters to pick from. The likelihood all of these would be available would be slim, so some would probably have to be cut from the lineup.

SUPPORTING NON-PLAYABLE CHARACTERS

It's impossible to be able to play as every character out there. The game designers couldn't possibly make enough variations for it to be worthwhile, it's too much programming work and it wouldn't be worth it for the smaller characters.

However, that doesn't mean they can't still pop up as NPCs, right? Marvel Ultimate Alliance had cameo characters in supporting roles as people to talk to on missions, interactions at the base of operations and so on. That's what we're doing here.

  • ARGUS
  • Adam Strange
  • Alfred Pennyworth and Lucius Fox
  • Animal Man
  • Commissioner Gordon, Harvey Bullock and Renee Montoya
  • Dan Turpin and Maggie Sawyer
  • Doom Patrol
  • Dr. Fate (just too powerful)
  • Etrigan
  • Fire and Ice
  • Green Lantern Corps = Extra members of the GLC including the Guardians
  • Hawk and Dove = Hank Hall and probably Dawn Granger (I prefer that group with Don having died already)
  • Justice League Dark = Constantine, Deadman, Swamp Thing, etc
  • Legion of Super-Heroes
  • Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen
  • Marvel Family = Mary Marvel and such
  • Mera
  • Mr. Terrific
  • New Gods = Big Barda, Forager, Highfather, Lightray, Orion, Mister Miracle
  • Red Tornado Family = Red Tornado, Red Inferno, Red Torpedo and Red Volcano
  • S.T.A.R. Labs (Emil Hamilton and such)
  • Spectre
  • Stargirl and S.T.R.I.P.E.
  • Ted Kord
  • The Atom (too hard to figure out how to incorporate his powers as a playable method)
  • The Metal Men
  • The Question
  • Waverider (only to set up the sequel game as a post-credit tease)
  • Wildcat (trainer for the tutorial)

WHAT IS DC ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 2?

Just for the sake of explaining the thing I teased multiple times, here's a short explanation of the sequel game.

At the very end in a post-credit sequence, Waverider would show up and there would be all sorts of signs pointing toward a multiversal problem with different parallel earths crossing over.

Hypertime would be involved in this. That means we can incorporate some characters we didn't touch on in game #1, such as the Crime Syndicate/Justice Lords, the Anti-Monitor, Gog, Krona, Imperiex, Chronos, Solaris the Tyrant Sun, Superboy Prime with Alexander Luthor, Hal Jordan doing the whole Parallax and Spectre thing, and even Watchmen and Authority, maybe.

The game could include going to different alternate dimensions as well as the past and the future. You could see Jonah Hex in the past during a wild west level. You could team up with the Justice Society of America's Alan Scott and Jay Garrick.

At the end, the Anti-Monitor would be stopped and it would set up a third game, but I'm not sure what would be the best story for that one. After all, the first game isn't even real, let alone the second!

What do you think? What would your pitch be for a DC Ultimate Alliance game?

Week in Geek #123: GLOW Cancelled, Doctor Strange in Spider-Man 3 and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Sunday, October 11, 2020

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

No Final Season of GLOW

This sucks. Netflix decided to go back on its renewal of a final season of GLOW and it won't be producing the fourth season. The show's just done, with no resolution. That's the worst way to go. In particular, it's a shame that we already know that was supposed to be the end, because that means there's no potential in another service picking it up. No other place would want to pay for ONE season of a show. Even if that were true, it would've been Netflix, so this is just doomed. Very, very disappointing.

Sister Act 3

There's going to be a Sister Act 3. That's awesome (in theory). The first is a classic that I really need to revisit, as I loved it as a kid. The second was...well...

But maybe the third would be great like the first one was, as far as I can remember.

Sarah Shahi as Isis in Black Adam

Supposedly, Sarah Shahi has been cast as Adrianna Tomaz, aka Isis, in the Black Adam film.

I'm not super duper familiar with Isis enough to be able to tell you any of her character traits or anything. However, I do know Sarah Shahi is a great actress who is gorgeous and I could totally see her pulling off the visual look of this character as well as holding her weight on the acting side.

In that regard, I'm totally down for this.

Doctor Strange in Spider-Man 3

More news about the idea that Spider-Verse is coming for the third Spider-Man film, as now, Benedict Cumberbatch is going to be in the film as Doctor Strange.

How are they going to have a film that is both about parallel dimensions and different versions of Peter Parker fighting villains like Electro from other universes, while also dealing with the plot of Peter on the run with people thinking he killed Quentin Beck?

Perhaps they've abandoned that story. Maybe, instead of telling the tale of how he deals with the repercussions of people knowing his secret identity and all, Peter spends the first few minutes of the film on the run and comes in contact with Doctor Strange. Then, he gets him to cast a spell where everyone forgets all this information, but in the process, it opens up the portals to the other dimensions.

That way, you don't have Mephisto taking away Mary Jane Watson's marriage to Peter, since we don't have MJ in the MCU (yes, I said it, we don't have MJ. Michelle Jones doesn't count as she's nothing at all like the character and has a different name).

I'd like a reference to how J. Jonah Jameson wanted to name Doctor Octopus Doctor Strange, but said the name was taken.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THESE TOPICS?

What is the Hypernym for Movies, Film and TV Shows? One Word to Rule Them All?

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, October 9, 2020

Why is it that we can refer to baseball, basketball, football, etc as "sports" and other types of hypernyms, but there's not one word that we can use that collectively means "television shows and movies"?

Every single suggestion I've ever heard doesn't actually apply.

Media = Too broad. Newspapers are media. Weather broadcasts are media. Twitter is media.

Cinema = That implies just movies/films and not television, as it revolves around going to a theater. But this might be the best thing, as we might just shift away from thinking there's a difference between seeing a movie in a theater and watching it at home, as well as watching a TV show at home or at a theater. The more we have films making their debuts at home on streaming services, the more "cinema" will be accepted, I think—especially if the lines blur more between a television series and a multi-part movie.

Film = Things are digital nowadays. Plus, that implies more so just movies and not TV. Also, you can film things that aren't movies or television shows.

Shows = A broadway play is a show, isn't it? Plus, nobody says "shows" and means "movies".

Motion Pictures = Everyone will just think that means movies. Also, the recordings you make of your kid's recital are motion pictures, but not movies or television shows.

Programs = What do you call a pamphlet that they give you at an event? What do you call when you set something up to record or to perform an action? You program your TV tor DVR a show. No real distinctive tie to movies, either.

Screen = That's just what you view these things on. Also, what type of screen? My cell phone is a screen and I can be on a phone call. That's not this. Neither are video games on your TV screen or monitor. Video games aren't part of this word we're going for at all.

Entertainment = What do you call all the other forms of entertainment, like music?

We need to create a word that means strictly "films, movies or whatever you call motion pictures that are of the cinematic nature along those lines, as well as television shows, made for TV movies, etc."

If it weren't for video games, I would say we should just merge screen and entertainment together to be screentertainment (but that's also a mouthful) because you ultimately do have to watch either of these things on some sort of screen.

In my mind, "movies" is more general than "films" and "television" is becoming outdated, too, as more and more people are watching TV shows on their phones or computers instead of specifically on their television sets. Thus, we need a word that means "a motion picture that is created for the purpose of storytelling as entertainment, with a writer and a story, that you experience by watching on some sort of screen, but isn't a video game."

Cinema should be the root of it. Ultimately, these are plays that are put on a screen instead of a live performance. But But maybe there should be an acronym, kind of like TV, DVD, etc.

These aren't the catchiest terms, but all I can think of right now are the following suggestions:

  • Cinemedia / Cinemadia = Cinema Media
    • ie, "Superhero movies and television shows are my favorite types of cinemedia."
  • VEC = Visual Entertainment Cinema
    • ie, "What times of VECs do you like to watch?"
  • MoPEM / MoPEC = Motion Picture Entertainment Media / Cinema
    • ie, "I'm really into MOPEM. I usually watch a couple MOPEMs each day."

Could someone else think of something better? Sure. But it's been decades and we still don't have a word for this, so someone has to step in and suggest it.

I want to know your ideas. What word should we invent to be a catch-all for movies and television shows? Drop your comments below!

When it comes to comics and the superhero genre, death is referred to as a "revolving door" where no one really stays dead.

Naturally, there are exceptions. For the most part, Uncle Ben is never brought back, nor are Thomas and Martha Wayne. At least, not in a real way. It's always a dream, some other dimension, an Elseworlds story or something along those lines.

That goes for most other big changes to characters. It's rare to have Dick Grayson transition from Robin to Nightwing, Bucky to come back to life as Winter Soldier and so on, and people actually accept it. More often than not, if you try to replace Peter Parker with Ben Reilly, it just doesn't work, which is why no one ever thought Doctor Octopus was stuck in Peter's body forever.

In regards to The Joker—one of the most maniacal, horrific characters in all of fiction, let alone narrowing it down to just DC—people always ask "Why doesn't someone just kill him?"

Of course why not? The guy murders TONS of people every time he does anything. But DC will never kill him off, nor would he ever say dead for good. Every time he seems to have met his end, it's always some ruse where they never find his body and he's escaped so he can pull more hijinks down the line.

But what if DC decided to have a definitive end to Joker by actually cutting the cord? Whether it actually stuck forever or was just as temporary as Jean Grey's or Superman's death, or even the longer ones, it's interesting to think about. That's why people gravitate to stories like Injustice with Superman killing Joker for having manipulated him into killing Lois Lane and their child.

So let's dive into this thought experiment. Theoretically, if Joker were to be put down for good, who should do it? Which character has the right to be the one to do the deed? Who gets the honor and bears the burden of killing Joker once and for all?

What if Joker died? Who should pull the trigger?

Batman = No

We have to start examining things with Batman, naturally. He's the main character, after all, who has the deepest ties to Joker.

Their rivalry is epic. It's not just some decades-long multimedia war, but something that is complex. Some people interpret their battles as two diametrically opposed polar opposites. They're two sides of the same coin where one is crazy and bright and cheerful and evil, while the other is also crazy, but dark, brooding and heroic.

Some people interpret their story as struggling lovers. Others consider it an ethics discussion. It's all over the place, but there are usually common themes.

Joker is obsessed with Batman. It might not be as reciprocated, but Bruce definitely has a certain respect and fear for Joker above all other villains. Even Bane doesn't elicit the same response, and he's done some awful things to the family.

But it's Joker who pushes Batman to break his no-killing rule and nearly succeeds on a regular basis. So is that how this ends? Does Bruce finally snap, kill Joker and be done with it?

I think the only way you justify that is if you want your story to be a tragedy in a "no turning back from this, ever" type of scenario. Once Batman kills someone, that's it. He can no longer not be a killer. Joker would be the one to be the most justified in murdering (outside of someone like Darkseid, but aliens don't really count based on parademons and such). If you want the story of Bruce Wayne to end with his incorruptible moral compass being corrupted to prove that no one is immune to the horrors of the world, then pull an Alan Moore and tell us why you think there's no hope for humankind and be all depressed.

I'm not that type. I hate people in a lot of ways and I think there are some absolutely disgusting, atrocious humans on this planet that shouldn't be here, but I don't think every story needs to be doom and gloom.

I prefer my Batman to be the type of person who gets up whenever he's knocked down. Give me the "No matter what, I'm still not going to let you win" type of Batman. He should figure out another way to beat Joker and stop him from hurting anyone else other than to just become a killer like the other criminals.

Jason Todd = Maybe...but No

It's hard to find an argument for why Jason Todd shouldn't be the one to kill Joker. After all, Joker killed him, so fair's fair, right? Joker beat him with a crowbar and blew him up, which scarred him forever. Even after being resurrected, Jason's adopted the Red Hood moniker as a twisted bit of devotion toward this, which shows he isn't moving past it.

Recently, in the story of the three Jokers, Jason got a measure of revenge by killing one of them, hoping it was the one who killed him. After all these years, he deserved to do that, and I'm glad they had him pull the trigger, even if I'm 100% convinced there aren't actually three Jokers and whatnot, so it won't be a true act of vengeance.

But here's where I argue Jason shouldn't be the one to officially kill the real Joker. What does that accomplish? He kills the guy who killed him. Okay. He doesn't actually get to go back in time and stop all that from happening. Those scars are still there. Jason's already crossed the line of being a murderer, so it's not likely he can be redeemed in a way where he's totally pure or anything, but there comes a time where all that killing doesn't amount to anything on its own. Hell, he can continue to kill other crooks even after Joker's death and it doesn't mean anything for his own journey, positive or negative.

The real way to get past it is getting past it. Jason certainly shouldn't forgive Joker by any means, of course. That's not the same as moving on. But he should come to terms with what happened and turn that into more of a positive in some fashion, rather than just getting blunt revenge eye-for-an-eye style.

I'd rather see Jason's conclusion via Joker being that he stops being Red Hood and illustrates that he's more than just "the Robin that was killed by Joker" by becoming his own hero a la Dick Grayson becoming Nightwing. What name should that be? No idea. Jason was Wingman at one point, but I find that name pretty damn lame. But that's a discussion for another article. The point remains that if Jason moves on from calling himself Red Hood to calling himself something more aligned with the rest of the family—even if he's still a killer, which is okay to be the most brutal that does the things Bruce and others refuse to do—that's the real win over Joker, rather than just killing him.

Barbara Gordon = No

Babs is even weaker of an argument, in my mind, than Jason. She comes from a similar background as far as why, but has even less grounds.

Barbara was shot and paralyzed by Joker. That's horrendous. She's overcome it and is back to being Batgirl, but being wheelchair-bound and becoming Oracle is tied to her character forever, to the point that most stories, if they're able to go down that road, does a retelling of Killing Joke.

Naturally, Barbara has every right to kill Joker for that. But I don't think she's the type to get her revenge in that fashion.

I've never interpreted Barbara as having more of a vicious side to her than Jason, do you? And since Jason was actually killed by Joker, instead of just paralyzed, he has more of a willingness to pull the trigger and more of a reason to.

Barbara is harder to corrupt. She shouldn't throw that all away just to kill Joker. That's evidenced by the recent comics, too, with her condemning Jason's actions and considering him a criminal they need to bring in just like everyone else.

Good for you, Babs. Don't go down that road. Her revenge on Joker isn't something I've been able to wrap my mind around. It's not good enough to simply walk again. He'd just scoff at that like "I guess I didn't do a good enough job" and move on with his day. I think she'd have to outsmart him in some fashion that really stings...but that's another story for another article.

Harley Quinn = Yes?

If one woman is getting revenge on Joker, justifiably, it's Harley Quinn. This girl's been put through the ringer and I think it's actually difficult to think of an argument for why she shouldn't be the one to kill him.

Think about it. Even if her life was messed up before she met Joker (which in some tellings, it isn't), he wrapped her around his finger, had her lose her job, lose her sanity, sometimes bleach her skin, turned her into a killer and he's constantly abusive in every way possible.

Joker offers NOTHING good for Harley, but she keeps going back to him. She's a textbook example of so many real life cases, just turned up to 11. It's sad and it's not the type of thing any couple should be like "wow, I wish we were like Joker and Harley". No you don't! Just because you liked Sleepy Hollow and A Nightmare Before Christmas and you vibe more with skeletons at Halloween than snowmen in December doesn't mean you should ever want someone physically, emotionally and mentally abusive in your life like Joker.

This guy is scum. Pure evil. At best, he loves Harley because she cared and he's treating her terribly to where he doesn't deserve her. He may love her because he's turned her into something that fits his mold, instead of loving who she is. But most likely, he doesn't love her at all. Punchline will find that out.

Harley's character has broken off from Joker many times over the years. Sometimes, she goes off with Poison Ivy. Sometimes, she's part of the Suicide Squad. She's never quite heroic, as that would make her lose her edge, and her popularity is intrinsically tied to the idea that she's the spunky, wacky, psycho edgy hot chick that will cut someone who gives her a side eye. She's no Superman and if she were, the girls at Hot Topic wouldn't dig her as much and get tattoos of her and cosplay as the character.

Recently, even more than ever, Harley's also taken on a responsibility of becoming a women's empowerment vessel. She's kind of a "hear me roar" character, lately, taking on the whole support of representing all women who are fighting back from their abusive husbands/boyfriends/etc and kicking ass no matter who they offend (as if that's offensive to stand up for yourself and get out of a bad spot).

Isn't the ultimate win that she'd kill Joker? She's a murderer, so she's not breaking her code and losing anything. This would be the only way she'd never go back to him (even if she might regret it and miss him later, which would be a backtrack for her independence), but she'd at least have made that decision to try to do that knowing she could never go back.

I think there's a very, very strong case that if Joker were to die, Harley has to be the one to do it.

Jim Gordon = No

It's funny that Commissioner Gordon is always one to remind Batman not to cross the line by killing anyone, yet he's a cop. Cops do shoot and kill people if need be—sometimes, not even if it's necessary, unfortunately.

I always find it interesting when people have no issue having Gordon shoot some thug in a story, only to then say no one should kill Two-Face or Zsasz or someone. We know it's because they're actual characters, but it just makes no sense.

Logically, Gordon and any other cop should have shot Joker the first time he was doing any of his awful things and that would be the end of it. That's what would happen in real life. Magnify that by an exponential amount when you remember that Joker's paralyzed his daughter and shot/killed Sarah Essen. Any father and husband would be justified in killing Joker for retaliation.

But isn't that blah? The person to kill Joker is Gordon? It just doesn't fit in my mind.

Lock-Up, Azrael, or Another Punisher-Style Vigilante = No

This is quick. Should some random vigilante or person who is more willing to kill in general just take out Joker, like Punisher would?

No. That would be lame. If Azrael was the one to kill Joker, people would feel like it was wasted.

One of His Goons = No

Working for Penguin must be okay. He seems level-headed and you can even get a job as a server for the Iceberg Lounge. Being under the employ of Riddler is probably annoying as he tasks you to set up elaborate traps and continually talks about how he's smarter than you, but I'd imagine you could manage. Ra's al Ghul followers are supremely dedicated to his cause and would gladly give their lives for the league.

If you find yourself working for Joker, though? Forget about it. That guy can decide any random moment to carve your face off just for a laugh. He perpetually kills his allies to prove a point and you can never, ever be safe around him. Even if you stop working for him, he could just kill you because you know too much.

Maybe someone decides that at some moment when Joker has his back turned, they'll just shoot him. That's it. One shot to the head, he's dead, and now they don't have to worry about any of his insanity.

Perhaps this is even a plot to overthrow him and become the next big bad in Gotham. It likely wouldn't work, as Batman has more trouble with Joker than anyone else, so some random dude with a pistol wouldn't be as big of a threat, but that's beside the point.

That's also why I don't think this would be a good story to tell. There's one interesting element to it, which is the parallel that Thomas and Martha were gunned down by "some punk with a gun" and Joker, for all his theatrics, could fall victim to the same thing. But once you establish this new character as an imposing force for being "the one who killed Joker" and he's taken down by Batman, what else does that character have to offer?

A Civilian = Maybe?

Imagine after all the crazy antics and the grandiose displays of murder, the off-the-wall crimes that are so lavish and over-the-top that they require giant responses to them and go down in history as legends, where every single thing is building up to some great crescendo...if Joker just gets killed by some dude.

Not even a criminal. Not a rival psycho. Not a cop. Not Batman. A nobody.

Joker's killed hundreds. He's ruined families. There should be no end to the amount of people who would gleefully attack him if they saw him in public, hoping to murder him and make sure he doesn't do that to anyone else. Some people would be doing that in a joint murder/suicide fashion, while others would consider it a public service.

It would be kind of fitting if Joker's great work of art wasn't finished because "some punk with a gun" got him, similar to how Joe Chill killed Thomas and Martha. I like the idea a lot and the only argument I can think of that goes against it is that you can't track that person anymore, similar to the goon idea. Once they kill Joker and deal with the immediate repercussions of that, their story is done.

Joker Kills Himself = Yes?

In The Dark Knight Returns, Joker meets his end by snapping his own neck. Joker could always die as a result of his own plans backfiring, too. I think it's a strong, strong discussion to have that this could be the way he goes. That way, no one gets their hands dirty, but everyone can say they have their moments where they wish they could have killed Joker, even if they don't know if they would have done it if they did have the opportunity.

In a way, Joker wins and loses in this scenario. He loses his life, naturally, but he wins by not giving anyone the satisfaction. Maybe that's worth a laugh.

THE FINAL VERDICT

It's down to suicide, Harley Quinn, or a random civilian in my mind. I lean more toward the first two. If I had to make a pick based on this discussion, though, I think I'd go Harley Quinn for an active killer of someone else pulling the trigger, but I'd give a slight edge to suicide (planned or not) with Joker being responsible for his own death.

However, I'll tease something that I'll get into somewhere else in the future: the way Joker dies in my version of the story is none of these options. What am I talking about? What Batman story? Here's hoping I get to tell The Batman Blueprint at some point and you'll have to find out more about that some other time.

Who do you think should be the one to put down Joker for good if DC ever killed off the character?
