Legend of Zelda Fan Adds Triforce to His Eye Prosthesis

Posted by Anthony Mango - Thursday, December 19, 2013

ManiacalZManiac from Reddit posted something in the Zelda subreddit that I don't think anyone has ever seen before—pun intended.

ManiacalZManiac Reddit Eyeball Pictures

Yes, that is indeed the Triforce painted onto his prosthetic eye. Because of its positioning, you wouldn't be able to tell by just looking at him, as it's completely hidden:

But lo and behold, there it is.

Legend of Zelda contacts triforce logo eyeball

So for everyone that gets a tattoo of their favorite video game logos or names their children after a character they're fond of, ManiacalZManiac just upped the ante and added a brand new challenger in the fight of Most Dedicated Fan Ever.

Just for the fun of it, let's say you were in this position. What would you get painted on your prosthesis? The James Bond gun barrel? The Batman symbol? A green 1-up mushroom?

nintendo wii u super mario galaxy
This morning, during the final Nintendo Direct presentation for this year, Nintendo announced the first new playable character in the Super Smash Brothers roster for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Princess Rosalina and her little star comrade Luma of Super Mario Galaxy fame enter the battle as a unique tandem.

In a simply stunning showcased trailer, Kirby is seen star-gliding above a galactic Mario Kart track where Mario, Donkey Kong, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser are seen racing below him. Suddenly a beam of light comes from out of nowhere and cuts Kirby off, causing him to crash down to the course below. Kirby then comes face-to-face with Luma as the racers bring their vehicles to a halt. Rosalina then appears, revealing herself as the roster's next competitor.

The trailer showed various cool moves and combinations in which Rosalina can use Luma. She even showcased a few solo moves for herself during the trailer as well. The use of the two of them together is similar to how Olimar fights, using his Pikmin friends as his main—and really, only—forms of attack and defense. This announcement is literally coming just on the heels of her recent inclusion as bonus playable character in the recently released Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U console.

Also—if all that wasn't already enough—immediately after the Smash Brothers trailer wrapped up, a new trailer was shown for the upcoming Mario Kart 8, which also revealed Rosalina to be the newest racer in the lineup for the title. Super Mario Galaxy was one of the, if not the most, beloved series that the previous Wii console had to offer, and as far as I'm concerned it deserves some recognition in a character on the next Smash roster. And who better than Princess Rosalina herself and her little star buddy?

To hear more of my thoughts and opinions on this recent character inclusion, please feel free to watch the following video link below:

Week in Geek: December 18th, 2013

Posted by Jeff Penner - Wednesday, December 18, 2013

Want to know what happened the past few days in nerd culture? WEEK IN GEEK is your quick fix to catch up with the rest of the fanboys out there.

Nerdy current events in geek culture for this week

MOVIES

Paul Rudd is officially Ant-Man.

My take: Yes. Loved the idea of it. Love that it's official. This is going to be one fun movie. It will be a comedy, most likely, and will be criticized for it but if you just relax and enjoy the story and character I think this will be a huge hit.

The Hobbit sequel….

My take: I was hoping to get to see it before releasing this article but it hasn't worked out, so I put it to you to announce your thoughts in the comments below and I'll chime in later this week once I've seen it!

Joaquin Phoenix up for role in Batman/Superman movie.

My take: Mister "no more hollywood" himself in a major blockbuster? I'm confused. Although I've enjoyed almost everything I've seen him in, I'm worried his eccentricities may muck things up behind the scenes.

22 Jumpstreet Red Band Trailer.

My take: Not big news but I wanted to comment that this sequel is already marred with opinions. Many people loathed the comedic take that the first film went with (despite Johnny Depp CLEARLY being cool with it) and I personally really enjoyed it. I saw it twice in the theatre and I never do that with comedies. I hope the haters finally come around and go back and give part one another chance.

TELEVISION

"Twitter" TV series in development.

My take: ……what? A TV series based on the real-life people who run Twitter on a day-to-day basis. "The Social Network" was an interesting "mockumentary" with SOME facts but a whole series will get old fast, especially when people are too busy using the service to bother watching a show about people running it in the background.

"From Dusk Till Dawn" TV series in development.

My take: More vampires with a slightly different backstory to them. Just what television needs! This smells heavily of the Weinsteins going after TV money.

HOLLYWOOD

Shia LaBeouf apologizes for stealing Daniel Clowes' idea.

My take: Nobody, especially someone in "the biz" is so dumb to not give credit where credit is due. Shia will be back peddling for the remainder of his career after this, and deserves the prison he's created for himself.

Watch out for this segment each and every Wednesday. We'll see you next week!

Did we miss something? What are your thoughts on these topics?

Not long after JGL committed to Vertigo's Sandman adaptation, news has broken that other speculated star, Paul Rudd, has, in fact, landed the leading role of Earth's Smallest Avenger in Edgar Wright's Ant Man film.

Marvel Studios has casted Paul Rudd as Hank Pym/Ant ManRudd's name has been thrown around in conjunction with the film for some time, though, it was never released which iteration Ant Man he would play. Along with today's casting news came the update that he will play Hank Pym in the film, though may not be the only one to dawn the mantle. Early test footage of the film screened earlier this year teased Wright's comedic influence which could make Paul "Slappin' the Base" Rudd an excellent fit for the story style. Still, it remains to be seen if Rudd will eventually stand among Marvel Studios' other heroes in a future Avengers film.

Who is your favorite Ant Man? What do you think of Rudd? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned to fanboysanonymous.com for more casting updates.

Quentin Tarantino fans rejoice! His 1994 cult hit Pulp Fiction has been selected alongside twenty-four other classic films to be permanently archived and protected inside the National Film Archive, part of the United States Library of Congress. This bolsters the NFA's library to include 625 total films that are forever saved for future generations to view.

The National Film Registry stands among the finest summations of more than a century of extraordinary American cinema. This key component of American cultural history, however, is endangered, so we must protect the nation’s matchless film heritage and cinematic creativity. – James H. Billington, Librarian of Congress

Pulp Fiction Christopher Walken Watch Scene
We're gonna put this movie in a place where it can be kept safe.

Also included on this year's list are beloved flicks such as Mary Poppins, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, King of Jazz, Roger & Me, and Gilda. Even in a massive list of twenty-five films, Pulp Fiction shines as the standout for this year's list; it strays outside of one's normal expectations for such an honor, what with such characteristics as over-the-top violence, use of drugs, religious zealotry, and odd storytelling methods.

Then again, maybe this should come as no surprise, considering the massive amount of adoration the movie has gained over the short nineteen years of its existence. Few film-makers have gained such a die-hard following of fanatics as Tarantino, many of whom would name Pulp Fiction as the movie that hooked them. The Library of Congress even credited it for having a major impact on film as an art:

Pulp Fiction Soundtrack Download
Tarantino’s mordantly wicked Möbius strip of a movie influenced a generation of filmmakers and stands as a milestone in the evolution of independent cinema in the United States, making it one of the few films on the National Film Registry as notable for its lasting impact on the film industry as its considerable artistic merits.

Felicitations to Tarantino, Miramax Pictures, and everyone else involved! This is a milestone for film and will hopefully open minds to the possibilities of what can constitute a classic movie.

If you ask me, Hoodratz in Space is an up-and-coming beast in the comic world, or it will be. With such a unique idea and such beautiful art, it simply isn't a failing recipe. I've been liking Hoodratz In Space's art for about six months now on the official Hoodratz In Space Facebook page, and it's fair to say that I think this series will definitely be a juggernaut one day. It won't be too long at all before this comic can be snatched up locally, anywhere.

The Sexy Ladies of Hoodratz In Space Comic Book DownloadDon't believe me? Last year saw the funding of Vear Graphics's first Kickstarter project: a request for a simple eight hundred dollars which was quickly funded—and more!—by soon-to-be Hoodratz In Space fanatics. You can download the comic here: Hoodratz In Space Issue #1.

Hoodratz In Space Issue #1: Who better to save the planet from destruction than a honed and hard group of…female singers? Hoodratz In Space follows this group while an alien race—a people marked by rage and hate, manifested as the Aock Soldiers—set their hearts and minds on the elimination of our people. Considering the danger involved, calling on the Hoodratz is clearly the way to go.

A year later, it was time for round two. Issue #2's Kickstarter manifested recently, asking for a small $200 funding increase over the previous year and for willing project donations. It blew the funding goal out of the water again. My opinion? There will be an Issue #3, and it will be a bad-ass addition to the Hoodratz In Space comic book family. Check out the video for the newly funded project—a much better Kickstarter video than the last, with a ten times better flow—below.

Hoodratz In Space Issue #2 (Per Erik Reeves and Jackie Cannons Kickstarter): The Hoodratz In Space (Starlynn, Cherry, Candy, and Crystal) begin to fight for their race’s survival in the desert plains of Australia and the vast jungles of Africa against an enemy they know nothing about. The four girls are still together, with a few new companions along, as they search planet after planet seeking the source responsible for the attacks.

When it's all said and done, the comics are unique and smart, and the art is amazing. Want to hear more? Scope the video for the first project below, and then make sure you like the Facebook page to get updates. Don't forget to tell me what you think downstairs.

As a music lover and singer, very few experiences can compare to hearing an entire audience singing in unison to a beloved tune. Perhaps this is the reason why I love Kings X.

Rock 80s old school Dug Pinnick Jerry Gaskill Ty Tabor religious

I didn't know who they were until 2003 when my husband shared the band with me in a conversation about good music. After seeing this video, being complimented in the ladies' room during our gigs seemed like being praised for a crayon drawing while people like Dug Pinnick embrace fanfare for their oil-based masterpieces.

Kings X were a god-loving band in the beginning. Lead singer Doug "Dug" Pinnick came out of the closet, which resulted in him being banned from his church. The songs now have lyrics like Dear God/Why are your people so fucking mean, and the resulted ambivalence is now presenting itself in the form of Dug's pentagram belt buckle.

Out of the Silent Planet album Goldilox dreads cool controversial trio

hospitalized hernia surgery Dug Pinnick fan funded treatment recovery
Six months ago, Dug underwent a hernia surgery he couldn't afford. Kings X fans rallied to raise $26,000 to pay for his successful treatment. "I hope I can repay you all someday with a huge hug," Pinnick said, "and continue to make the music that makes you think and groove."

The song "Goldilox" is so cherished that it's requested at least three times during the band's downtime. Guitarist Ty Taybor saturates the venue with his opening chords, picking away at the riff that everyone immediately soaks up. This brings a smile to my face.

The opening lyric of "Goldilox" is indelible and resonates with the four-eyed, middle-aged crowd who is now coming to life like an old record feeling the embrace of a needle tip. Dug isn't at the mic; he has no intention to sing. So he lets his admirers' voices take on the first verse. I can't believe/Summer's almost here/I made it through another year/Even if alone.

The band is shrouded with dark lighting and play on as the crowd belts. There's no tears in my eyes/Life is still full of surprise/I'm not looking for a one-night stand.

The audience unites, thumbs tucked defiantly under fists of fandom. Dug's nods are heavy with gratitude. He looks like a stick figure made out of Slim Jims. His frail figure carries the heavy weight of humility. When I saw them play live, Dug's family were proud of him and smiling. Dug is also smiling an "Aw man, you guys" grin. Jerry Gaskill backs up the noise, as drummers do, and his teeth chatter to match the song's meter.

Live show band photo fans metalheads large venue sold out

The fans manage to hold a harmony @4:00 following Ty's epic solo. This band is among a rare breed who do what they do for this brand of solidarity. At one point, Dug cues the audience by stealthily waving a peace sign into a gesture toward his eyes, indicating the next lyrics. I look at you/And I know who you are/You're just a little bit too far/From my own.

When a frontman crosses his hands over his heart and looks at his spectators, it's hard to deny the modesty of an underrated band. (If you want to hear "Goldilox" as it came to be known and loved, listen to it here.

Kings X is humble, talented, and triumphant. And this is why I'm a fangirl. Thoughts?

I love beer. I also love video games. Lucky for me, Bit By Bit Studios has released Fiz: The Brewery Management Game to scratch these itches simultaneously. Best of all, it does so without microtransactions or a frustrating energy system that limits your game time.

Best iphone beer brewing game app

If you’ve played any of Kairosoft’s popular sims, Fiz will feel immediately familiar. You play as an up-and-coming brewmaster, intent on bringing joy to the masses through the power of sweet, sweet beer. As brewmaster, you are responsible for managing and maintaining a well-rounded staff, equipping your brewery with top-notch equipment, and most importantly, brewing the most kickass beer known to man.

Fiz best beer highest quality most expensive
The menus are intimidating to start
In Fiz, you manage your brewery through several (initially imposing) menus. Fortunately, you learn the intricacies of brewing smartphone beer by means of a thorough—but not excessive—tutorial. To craft beer, you arrange ingredients in sequence and then assign required tasks to each of your employees. Each employee has different strengths and weaknesses, and they level up as they gain brewing experience, just like in real life (I imagine).

Once your beer is complete, Fiz encourages you to think as businessperson as well as brewmaster. You can perform market research on local shops and restaurants to learn the tastes and spending habits of each location’s customers as well as the intensity of the competition. While you can try to sell your product blind, you will quickly find your beer expiring on store shelves and your wallet empty.

As word of your mind-numbingly delicious beer spreads, your brewery will receive occasional visitors from potential rivals, customers, and teachers, each bearing an invitation to an Event (read: quest). Events most often require that you brew a batch of a certain quality, quantity, or style, and typically reward you with a sizable cash bonus and new beer recipes. You also have access to a list of Challenges (think achievements), which reward you with coins and serve as a rough guide for what your brewery should be focusing on to progress.

Best brewery equipment Fiz walkthrough let's play

I found Events to be my favorite part of Fiz. Not only do they provide much-needed structure for a largely open-ended game, the satisfying writing complements the brewery sim with a tongue-in-cheek humor that I enjoyed tremendously. The interactions with a rival brewmaster are particularly entertaining.

Although I wouldn’t exactly call Fiz educational, it is clear that a great deal of knowledge and love for the brewing practice went into this game. Each of the ingredients and recipes contains a description of its real-world uses and characteristics. If you spend a few hours with Fiz, you won’t know how to make a beer from scratch, but you might know the difference between a pale ale and an IPA.

If you love beer or management sims, you can pick up Fiz for $1.99 on:

iOS - App Store
Android - Google Play

**Full disclosure: Fiz was developed by a friend of mine, and I wrote this article to help promote it. As always, my opinions are mine and mine alone and are expressed truthfully here. **

I tend to prefer bitter beers such as IPAs, but my favorite has always been Guinness. Let me know some of your favorites in the comments below.

The snap clip is slid into the center loop of fabric, but it isn’t glued in, so you can switch it to face left or right, replace it with a hair tie, or find other ways to wear it. Ancient Game Stones from the Bronze Age Found in Siirt, Turkey

Posted by Anonymous - Tuesday, December 17, 2013

After several days of excavation, between August 14 and 15, 2013, archaeologists discovered gaming stones in the burial site at Başur Höyük. This site, left behind from the Bronze Age, is located in the Southeastern province of Turkey known as Siirt. Lorenzi explains in Discovery News that archaeologists have been excavating nine different graves. In one of them they discovered 49 sculpted stones of various kinds. The groups of stones found have different shapes from each other, and they are painted in different colors such as green, red, blue, black, and white.

Oldest board game in history discovered in Siirt

According to archaeologist Haluk SaÄźlamtimur, from Ege University, in Izmir, Turkey, some of the stones "Depict pigs, dogs and pyramids, others feature round and bullet shapes. We also found dice as well as three circular tokens made of white shell and topped with a black round stone." SaÄźlamtimur also explained that pieces similar to these stones were found in locations in nearby Syria and Iraq. One piece in particular was the oldest board game, the royal game of Ur.

Based on an article in the Smithsonian magazine, What is even more interesting is that the royal game of Ur was found in the area known as the Fertile Crescent, at what used to be called Mesopotamia. In another article written by Viegas of Discovery News, it was found that these board games have been around since 3500 BCE. Even though the royal game of Ur is said to be 4,800 years old, another board game that was found was the Egyptian game of senet, which is said to be 11,000 years old!

The Royal Game of Ur Board Game
It's no surprise that such advanced, elaborately made game pieces would be found in the area where the first agricultural societies were formed.  Even during that time, so long ago, playing games was a symbol of status in society; only the elite would be able to play games, according to an article in Discovery News: "Many of the first board games appear to have been diplomatic gifts to signify status," co-author Mark Hall told Discovery News. “We have early examples of quite splendid playing pieces belonging to elite, privileged people."

Archaeologist SaÄźlamtimur explained at his conference that the pieces found at the BaĹźur HöyĂĽk grave were found in clusters. The pieces first found  in Syria and Iraq, on the other hand, were found separately, so archaeologists had not thought them to be part of a game at first. Now, because the new pieces found are the same and have been found in clusters, they can now be verified as belonging to the same game, states Lorenzi. Alongside this, the pieces have been classified to come in groups of four and eight, which could mean that "According to distribution, shape and numbers of the stone pieces, it appears that the game is based on the number 4," according to SaÄźlamtimur.
Nine Burial Sites where Game Tokens were found

Furthermore, the Archaeology News Network describes that around 2550–2400 BC, during the First Dynasty of Ur, the boards used to play the games were actually for the "game of twenty squares," which could be similar to backgammon. The pieces were associated with the game because they were found in the tombs lined up in a straight row according to shape and color: "The set consisted of seven shell roundels inlaid with of five lapis lazuli dots and seven roundels of black shale inlaid with five dots of white shell."

More detail of the game pieces, the board game, and the area in which they were discovered are written in the Archaeology News Network. This is a great place to catch up on the ancient history of Mesopotamia and see some interesting games!

Goyer and Gordon-Levitt to take Veritgo's "Sandman" to the Big Screen

Posted by Unknown - Monday, December 16, 2013

It's been a month full of announcements from both the Vertigo and David Goyer camps. Following the announcement of a pilot order for Ennis' Preacher and Goyer rumored to be writing low budget scripts for B-list DC heroes, DC made headlines once again with the announcement that Goyer will be adapting Neil Gaiman's legendary work Sandman with ex-Robin (of sorts) Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached to both direct and star.

David Goyer has been set to adapt Neil Gaiman's Sandman for theaters with Joseph-Gordon Levitt attached
While the classic Gaiman story seems an obvious choice for the live action treatment in the era of adaptations and franchise searching, it's interesting to see so much action from DC in regards to their more obscure IP. While Sandman is certainly a comic industry classic, the eternally pale dream lord Morpheus grows even paler when compared to the status of heroes like The Flash and Wonder Woman. Still, its nice to see Vertigo attempting to build on the foundation The Walking Dead and the Marvel Studios' films have built.

JGL direct and star Neil Gaiman's Sandman concept art test screening David Goyer ScriptThe real shock in the announcement is the attachment of Gordon-Levitt, who wouldn't be a particularly obvious choice for the lanky, somber, wild haired Morpheus. Still, it should come as less of a surprise when you look at both his past and future track record. He's no stranger to high-concept films, performing in both Inception and Looper,  and has already made his foray into the superhero genre in The Dark Knight Rises, with his second comic book film A Dame to Kill For due in August. While he bears little resemblance to the Dream Lord outright, I think this, far more so than for Ben Affleck as Batman, is a case of "Ledger Syndrome" where the unassuming certainly holds promise for surprise.

Few other details about the Sandman adaptation are currently available. What do you think of the news? Are you a Gordon-Levitt fan? Let us know in the comments section below and stay tuned with Fanboys Anonymous to see who else will join Gordon-Levitt in Goyer's adaptation of Sandman.

So, what's all the fuss about Bitcoin these days? Well, to put it into layman's terms, Robert McNally—an iOS developer at parking payment startup QuickPay—explains that Bitcoin is a type of money, or "unit of account," used to make transactions online.

Programmer Robert McNally Put Together An Awesome Presentation On What Bitcoin Really Is.
Bitcoins were first developed in 2009 by a Japanese person using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoins are considered to be digital currency that are an "open-source peer-to-peer payment network." In order for transactions to be done, bitcoins need to pass through certain cryptography. For this reason, they are also known to be cryptocurrency ( Wikipedia).

The production of bitcoins occurs through a process called "bitcoin mining." Mining bitcoins does not necessarily require any knowledge of computer languages, because there are several websites available that provide guides on how to mine them.

Bitcoin from Wikimedia.
For example, one website, Start Bitcoin, provides a step-by-step "Beginner's Guide to Mining Bitcoins." After obtaining a bitcoin wallet, the user is given information about bitcoins as well as a walk-through of how to obtain and use them. Another website, Bitcoin, also explains in more detail how to begin using bitcoins.

Thus almost anyone with connection to the Internet can begin using bitcoins and even mining some! (Don't confuse this with Minecraft!) The process of mining can be complex for those not experienced in the field of computer hardware, but the websites mentioned above will at least introduce you to the process of mining.

There are approximately five types of machines used to mine bitcoins. Below are some images from Wikipedia:

Avalon ASIC-based mining machine GPU-based mining rig Butterfly Labs 65nm ASIC Single SC mining machine

ASICMINER USB mining device Lancelot FPGA-based mining board

Without going into more technical detail, the final question to ask is: how much is a bitcoin? Well, this is quite difficult to say, because bitcoins do not have a specific exchange rate. Because they are an open-source currency, they are not managed by a government and this makes them unaffected by inflation rates and whatnot. (Which is one of their primary advantages!) Thanks to some websites that offer currency conversion, however, calculating the currency values of bitcoins is becoming easier.

There are several sources that provide conversions of bitcoins. The three I found to be reliable were the following. The first source Preev claims that—as of December 12, 2013—one bitcoin (BTC) was equal to $863.40 USD, which is changing even as this is being written. The second source, XE, states that one bitcoin (XBT) was equal to $870.766 USD. This site also declares that:
Our currency rankings show that the most popular Bitcoin exchange rate is the USD to XBT rate. There is no official ISO currency code or Bitcoins, although XBT is commonly used. The currency symbol is XBT.
The third and final source (which I found to be the most reliable) is MTGOX. This site provides all of the changing values of the bitcoin as per each currency. On December 12, 2013, MTGOX shows that the lowest value for one Bitcoin (BTC) was equal to $856.12 USD, whereas the highest value was $912.25 USD.

After its first development in 2009, Bitcoins have experienced several highs and lows. According to McNally, the number of bitcoins more than tripled within the past three years. When they came out in 2010, the number of coins was 3 million, and by 2013, the number of coins reached a startling 10.5 million!

Number of Bitcoins over time line graph chart
Based on McNally's linear graph, "Number of Bitcoins Over Time" (shown on the right), the number of Bitcoins is expected to double by the year 2025 (about 12 years from now). This linear graph is actually based on the number of gold stocks throughout the millenia, but the same pattern is applicable to Bitcoins.

In summary, speaking as of today, the rocky situation of Bitcoins has been finalized by the Chinese. Right now, China has stopped the transaction of Bitcoins in some businesses. Seth Fiegerman of mashable.com announced in his article "Bitcoin Prices Plunge After China Cracks Down on Currency" that:

The price of bitcoin surged to $1,000 last month, but it dipped far below that mark just as quickly. Baidu, China's largest search engine, announced this week that it would no longer accept the digital currency as a form of payment, triggering a steep drop in the price of bitcoin. The announcement, which was posted on the Baidu website, followed a decision from China's central bank to prohibit financial institutions in the country from processing or insuring bitcoin transactions.
From these facts we can conclude that the situation with Bitcoin is a bit shaky. When it seems that it may not be doing so well right now, at some point, the situation of Bitcoin might become more positive. It's hard to say whether the situation of Bitcoins will be able to return to its previous condition after a big market such as China has made it stumble. So be aware when you mine your Bitcoins!

Venom and the Sinister Six Spin-Off Films Officially Announced

Posted by Orion Petitclerc - Sunday, December 15, 2013

A few days ago, vigilant Easter Egg hunters unearthed a hidden URL in a single frame from the recent Amazing Spider-Man 2 film trailer that led to a curious website called Electro Arrives. The site features an HD photo still of Harry Osborne (Dane DeHaan) hunched over an Oscorp holographic display with a curious countdown timer. The scene presents a treasure trove of Easter Eggs, but none more thrilling than another hidden URL linking an official press release document from Sony Pictures Entertainment announcing Venom and Sinister Six spin-off films. (For those interested, you can find the link by clicking the area around the top half of the holographic panel titled "Special Projects." The pulsating circle next to the area begins to spin when you hit the sweet spot.)

Watch Spider-Man 3 on Netflix and Amazon Prime

The release includes a list of five writers and three producers attached to an Amazing Spider-Man "franchise brain trust" that will produce an unknown number of spinoff films, linking them all under a shared cinematic universe Avengers-style. The Venom film had been stuck in preproduction limbo since the theatrical release of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, the final film in the defunct Raimi trilogy. Included in the list is Avi Arad, the Raimi trilogy veteran producer and all-around Spider-Man film go-to guy. Further details on the two announced spinoffs have yet to be revealed, but the release notes that the Sinister Six film will focus on the villains.

If you've been following my articles, then I probably don't need to express my sheer excitement over the Venom movie news—nor my undivided focus on the topic (sorry, Sinister Six). I couldn't fall asleep for an hour last night when I heard the news. I was nearly bouncing off the walls! Yet along with the excitement comes the utter dread, too. We Venomaniacs were scorned with Spider-Man 3's depiction of the Lethal Protector. For a while, I feared DeHaan/Osborne would follow his cartoon counterpart from Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man and don the alien costume, due to a series of tweeted photos from Marc Webb's Twitter account.

Buy Venom and Spider-Man statues, busts, and toys on Amazon and eBay
This is precisely how most Venomaniacs want the Venom film to look like.
Now that the recent Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer practically confirms Harry becoming the Green Goblin, another candidate fills his place to disrupt the natural (comic book continuity) order of Venom hosts. Since his debut back in 2011, Eugene "Flash" Thompson, a.k.a. Agent Venom—the Secret Avenger, Thunderbolt, and newest Guardian of the Galaxy—has risen in popularity enough to threaten Eddie Brock's, the first Venom's, rightful place in the limelight. Eddie has long suffered manhandling and abuse in comics and outright omission from the aforementioned cartoon series. If his mistreatment in Spider-Man 3 placed him in the no-fly list for his solo film debut, the Venom spin-off will turn out to be a bittersweet deal for loyal Brock fans such as myself. Considering Arad's comment a year ago about the Venom film being an Eddie Brock story, however, I can only hope that comment still holds ground.

Read issues of Ultimate Spider-Man on Comixology or the Marvel Comics AppKnowing that the Venom film will tie into the Amazing Spider-Man films, the big question remains: what will be the alien costume's origin? The new Spider-Man franchise is borrowing a lot of influence from Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley's famed Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series in regard to Peter Parker's secret history being connected to his powers, the overarching antagonistic presence of Oscorp throughout the franchise, and several of the characters'—both villainous and the supporting cast—designs. Perhaps the Venom symbiote will receive a Ultimate-esque film treatment as well: in Ultimate Spider-Man, the suit wasn't extraterrestrial, but artificial. The Venom suit was developed by Peter and Eddie's fathers before they died as a cure for cancer, but it ended up developing some major flaws. As much as many fans pine about Ultimate Venom, I would love to see him adapted into film to keep up with the ongoing theme of Oscorp experimentation gone horribly wrong.

I have a lot of high hopes for the Venom film. I really wish we get the movie and character we deserve, especially the Venom design we deserve (that is, one that's closer to Venom's classic design in the comics, either influenced by Todd McFarlane or Bagley). One of the most exciting prospects aside from the film itself is its commercialization, i.e. the comics, toys, video games, and merch. Oh, the merch; the merry, merry merch! HUNGERRR…FEEEEEEEED! Ahem, sorry about that.

Gaming Companies Contest YouTube Copyright Crackdown

Posted by Fellonius Munch - Saturday, December 14, 2013

There has been much outrage this week as video-sharing giant YouTube began a massive copyright crackdown on independent video producers who upload gaming walkthroughs and reviews, claiming in users' accounts that copyright notices have been issued by game producers.

Google and Youtube crackdown on video gamer uploads for copyright infringement

Sending out thousands of copyright infringement notices via their automated tracking system, Content ID, YouTube has targeted not only lone gamers who simply want to share their gaming experiences with the world, but also the YouTube channels of entertainment and culture websites such as yours truly, Fanboys Anonymous.

We had our YouTube Channel shut down recently for other reasons, and despite contesting the decision to have the channel and all previous existing video material removed, Google showed terrible customer service and a complete lack of professionalism (i.e. paying zero attention to the fact that we really had contested the decision, even when they were approached by the Better Business Bureau and told exactly why they were going against their own policies).

We suspect that there's going to be much of the same behavior on their part in the months to come. When asked about the controversial move, a spokesperson for Google told the press, "As ever, channel owners can easily dispute Content ID claims if they believe those claims are invalid!" Translated: "Moan and bitch all you like. We can't copyright moaning and bitching, and we couldn't care less!"

There's no denying that copyright infringement is unlawful, but copyright law is such a confused mess in some instances that it should—in most cases—be impossible for sharing a preview or review of an existing product to be seen as anything other than free advertising. In today's economic climate—in which the media industry rules the roost—all publicity is good publicity. Is Google dense enough to argue that the media industry makes what it does without its worldwide audiences' reviews/opinions trending on social media?

It's becoming more and more blatant since the days of social movements, such as Occupy Wall Street, that most, if not all, related laws are created with loopholes to serve the government and the corporation while putting the powerless individual in the frame as the real criminal.

Meanwhile, the film industry seems to only take the piracy of new products seriously as it hampers the maximization of profit where it matters the most: making an instant fortune at the box office and during initial DVD releases. After that, those products become disposable, selling half a year later in a supermarket for a fraction of their original DVD prices. It's an understandable concern, but this is not the case here. In video gaming, the interactive experience itself is the product. The visual content may be a form of intellectual property, but its job is to sell the game. That all-important interactive experience can't be stolen over YouTube, and yet the visual content and media text—story, plot, content, music—is nothing but advertising when separated from it.

I was taught, when studying media, that you can use up to 10% of a media product—whether it be literature, music, film, or game footage—before it could be seen as stealing a producer's intellectual property. However, the law states that there is no percentage and that a court of law treats each case of copyright infringement individually depending on the severity of the case.

This is partly because media can be shared for educational and journalistic purposes, and you don't specifically need a press pass to be a journalist; you just need the footage and a platform for your voice. This really got my blood boiling, despite the fact that I'm not a gamer by lifestyle! My reasons?

1.) Free Advertising & Publicity 'R' Us

Google and YouTube now claim to be against free publicity. When you monetize your videos, you barely make a fraction of what the advertisers and the product's companies make from commercializing your videos. On television, a 30-second commercial spot in the US costs anywhere between $206k and $705k. YouTube grants the media industry a virtually free platform on which to advertise, and that platform is its users.

How much do you make from the advertising space on your channel? If YouTube and Google advertisers don't want to play by the rules that television and film plays by, then why should the burden rest with us? They seem to be under the impression that the industries don't want to know how they can improve their products; they just want the money, no questions asked.

2.) Piracy, if that's what you want to call it, is not a one-way street

It's a hand-in-hand relationship! While YouTube is cracking down on gamers, there's no news of its cracking down on the social media companies that do make profits, and there's no regulatory establishment cracking down on YouTube for using its monetization feature to screw users. Do the advertisers pay royalties? No, and then apparently it's their profits we're hurting, even though we don't get paid and aren't even purposefully competing with them.

Those who upload "Let's Play" videos, "Walkthrough" videos, and the like are the bad guys because they (we) want to bring you the news. Then you want to share these videos with your friends, because if neither of you were sure you wanted to buy that certain game after you saw the Machinima review, you can get a much better idea after you do some research on YouTube. If a "Let's Play" or "Walkthrough" review trends, we've just done the gaming industry a massive favor!

Advertisers make billions exploiting video uploaders on Youtube
"What's yours is mine, not vice versa!"
The internet is a special place for all of us. It's essentially the final frontier for those who don't have spaceship pilot licenses and a few acres of moon. Anyone with the slightest bit of common sense can build themselves up from nothing, and it can cost nothing, too.

Internet space is apparently infinite, so no matter what you do you're always going to have competition—just as if you owned a coffee shop on the corner of a busy street. The moneymakers don't like competition; that's why your community cafĂ© will never be seen next to Starbucks. They're protected by the people who make money from them for advertising them. They're just one big, happy, slack-ass corporate party free of regulation and taking billions back every year in corporate tax rebates. It is, after all, they who regulate you and me, if nobody else!

I have huge respect for the several game-producing companies who heard their names mentioned in the press and came forward to call Google and YouTube big fat liars, and ultimately defended all gamers and free/independent journalists.

Capcom, one such company that came forward, publicly stated that they weren't behind YouTube's campaign against the gamers and didn't want them to be caught up in the mess. After all, it's not just about free press. If this gets blown out of proportion—if the booming gamer/game producer relationship is soured—the damage could realistically cost the industry much more than the courts claim piracy does. That, in turn, will hurt Google, and that, in turn, will give them the false impression that you and I were to blame all along, thus granting the corporation greater power to take matters into their own hands.

The biggest public statement came from game producer Deep Silver (Saints Row, Dead Island, and Metro: Last Light), who had this to say:
We have been working with YouTube to resolve various issues that have plagued the YouTube gaming community this week, as soon as we learned about what was going on.

1. A channel named "4GamerMovie" has been claiming reviews, Let's Plays, and Walkthrough videos for our games, including Metro: Last Light. We raised this issue with YouTube late last evening (CET) and from the reports we've gotten in the past hours, it seems that claims by this channel have been lifted. If this is not the case, please dispute the claim and link us your video in question via Twitter to @deepsilver.

2. Claims on titles like Saints Row IV, Dead Island Riptide, and Metro: Last Light have also been made by two companies involved with music: IDOL and Shock Entertainment Pty. Some claims are even about visual content. At the time of writing, this has not been resolved yet. However, we have made YouTube aware of this issue and the two companies in question do not seem to be restricting their wave of copyright claims to just Deep Silver titles. We hope that this situation will also be resolved quickly for all involved.

3. If you have received any claims by THQ for videos containing footage of Deep Silver titles, please dispute this claim and send us a tweet to @deepsilver including a link to the video in question. We can help with that.

Deep Silver has no intention of preventing players, who like to create gaming content on YouTube using our games, from doing so. Nor do we seek to block any videos of the kind. This includes Let's Play, Walkthrough, Review, or other edited or commentated videos that are monetized by a player.

Whether your opinion of our games is positive or negative in your YouTube video, it is not our right as a games publisher to infringe on your basic right to voice your opinion freely using a public platform.

We will be monitoring the changes on YouTube and any other online medium that lets our fans share their common passion for games, and react and adapt to facilitate our communities wherever they are.

You will not be alone in this, whatever changes may come. Within the games industry, including at our competitors, there are many who share this vision. Adapting to change may sometimes take time, so we hope that the gaming community will be patient with not just us, but others as well, as we collectively strive to resolve any issues that arise.
It's clear, though, that this is a war that's just been waiting to happen. Google cannot afford to be made a show of, after all. What would happen to its shiny (greasy, slippery) reputation?

I'm not so sure the gamers are itching to know how it will continue, or where and how it will likely end. Hopefully the game producers won't feel the need to change their perspective and bite the hand that feeds, because this really does have the potential to get ugly for everyone involved.

My own personal statement to Google and YouTube, if they weren't so big on ignoring the public, would be, "We're not hurting your business and you know it. As your audience and content providers—from the schoolkids and the pranksters to the lifers of free entertainment, news, and journalism—we make you. We fill your pockets, and most of that revenue still comes from exploiting your users."

Thanks to all of the gray spots and blurred lines in the media industry, the internet can so often seem like the wild west when it comes to business ethics and practices. The tycoons thrive on a lack of ethics when it's convenient to them, and preach the law when they seek to bend it to their will. The rest of us following the tail-end of the gold rush apparently have to accept that we're not allowed to take the competition into our hands like they do. There's your reason why the law of the internet has remained quite unclear this long, isn't it?

I say that the people affected by this wave of attacks from the Content ID killjoy robot (I imagine it as a bit like Ultron on a worldwide campaign to cleanse humanity) are not criminals. If Google would like to disagree, it's because they're criminal, but on a massive scale: the evil mastermind, or the supplier that controls the pusher!

Google used automated software on Youtube to hand out thousands of copyright notices
Avengers: Age of Content ID???
These videos keep a lot of bored people occupied. They also interest a lot more gamers in buying games, and so all it really is at the end of the argument is free press. You should be allowed to earn what you're worth for the revenue you make for the industries. Maybe that's why Google is on a mission to cut us out before the law becomes so involved that it damages them more than us.

On that note, should it really be up to Google and YouTube to regulate content on behalf of those businesses that haven't raised these copyright infringement concerns?

Sound off, Fanboys and Fangirls. Where do you stand in all of this? Comment below and thanks for reading.
