Marvel vs DC Superheroes Clash in WWE Survivor Series Battleworld (Fantasy Fights)

Posted by Anthony Mango - Wednesday, November 29, 2023

What if the characters of Marvel and DC fought in a WWE Survivor Series style pay-per-view?

Welcome to a special FANTASY FIGHTS podcast here on Fanboys Anonymous along with a Fantasy Booking edition of the Smark Out Moment Smack Talk podcast!

As part of THE BLUEPRINT PROJECT—where Anthony Mango seeks to take the entire history of every adaptation of a series and condense it into the gold standard bible version of the story with as many references as possible—one of the biggest adaptations is focused on THE MIGHTY MORPHIN' POWER RANGERS.

This Power Rangers Blueprint is dubbed ABSOLUTE POWER RANGERS: A MIGHTY MORPHIN' EPIC and is a 14 part series (12 feature films and 2 short films) telling the full story of the dawn of time and the backstory of Zordon, Rita and Lord Zedd as well as the fight against evil starring our core team of Tommy the Green Ranger/White Ranger, Jason the Red Ranger, Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Billy the Blue Ranger, Trini the Yellow Ranger and Zack the Black Ranger.

Batman is a franchise that has been around for nearly 100 years. It is almost impossible to watch all the films and every episode of the television series, as well as read all the comics at this point.

But what if someone were to condense all that—combine as many big and little details as possible and form the most cohesive outline of the Bruce Wayne character ever created—all in just 100 stories?

That is the goal of THE BATMAN BLUEPRINT—one of many parts of THE BLUEPRINT PROJECT created by Anthony Mango.

The official name of this Batman series is THE BATMAN: A KNIGHT-TIME STORY which will consist of 10 volumes of story arcs that tell the most comprehensive version of Batman by mixing elements from everything that has come before.

Big stories like A Death in the Family and The Long Halloween are adapted with original stories and new twists. The entire Bat Family is represented, as well as every villain and supporting character imaginable, whether they're crucial to the overall series like Alfred Pennyworth or extremely minor like Nick and Eddie from the beginning of Tim Burton's Batman 89.

This concept is huge, so here is a pitch video to explain what this is all about:

Stay tuned for more information and the initial breakdowns of the first few chapters of THE BATMAN: A KNIGHT-TIME STORY.

Mary Jane Watson is one of the most iconic love interests in the entire superhero genre. She's a core staple of the Spider-Man franchise—arguably the top female lead—and recognizable to even casual fans.

But despite being such an important, influential and noteworthy character, she's struggling to find her place in the modern day version of the Spider-Man mythos, to the point that I have to ask who is she anymore?

What is Mary Jane Watson's character these days?

Who is Mary Jane Watson?? Isn't It Obvious??

At first glance, you might be asking yourself what I'm even asking. Clearly, she's "Peter Parker's girlfriend/wife" and that's her role in the story. Duh.

But the damsel in distress trope has been dying out over the years. Rightfully so, might I add. Fans demand more effort to be put into stories so characters—typically more so women—are not just trophies that have to be saved by the hero and do nothing but get captured, shriek for help and plant a kiss on our protagonist to thank him.

They need to be actual characters with definable traits to make them interesting, much in the same way that the best antagonists are more than just "the villain" of a story, but can be explained in more detail.

Norman Osborn is an emotionally neglectful, sometimes downright physically abusive when not absentee father to Peter Parker's best friend, Harry Osborn. In some ways, Norman is a father figure to Peter and a representation of what Peter could turn into if he allowed his intelligence to get the better of him and corrupt into arrogance. When Norman goes in over his head with pride and ego and obsession, it backfires on him, leading to his transformation into the insane Green Goblin.

That's character. He's not just some guy on a glider chucking bombs that Spider-Man needs to punch. Hence why no one's favorite villain in this series is Jack O'Lantern, who is effectively the same exact gimmick across the board. And this version of Norman has only had some tweaks here and there, but has remained largely the same character since the start.

So explain to me who Mary Jane Watson is these days.

Mary Jane Watson vs. Other Love Interests

Again, yes, she's Peter's love interest. But so are dozens of others. For a dork that gets picked on and has painfully bad relationships, Peter slays. He's tasted the full rainbow and has no shortage of notches on his belt.

Peter Parker's love interests list is so long that Ranker stops at a top 20, not including Indira Daimonji, Lian Tang, Sally Avril, etc.

Most of those are pretty pointless, if we're being honest. There isn't anything about Debra Whitman that stands out as special compared to Gwen Stacy that you couldn't just merge those two characters and be fine with it.

So perhaps an even better comparison than the villain equivalent with Norman Osborn is to judge Mary Jane Watson against another love interest in Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat.

With Felicia, you're getting a vigilante. That offers Peter a reflection point where fans can look at her character in relation to Spider-Man and see why they are together as well as why they have issues. They have a commonality in their masked personas and adventures, but they differ greatly on their morality. She's often a criminal, whereas Peter is by the books good.

Who is Mary Jane in reflection to Peter?

Your answer can't be "the hot girl that Peter normally wouldn't be able to get" because that could apply to virtually any of them. Mary Jane is confident and sexy, but so is Felicia Hardy. Both are drawn with a big chest and perfect bodies and so on and so forth. They all are. But their attitudes are very much both the "spunky one" to counteract Peter, making that part redundant, along with how Mary Jane is "the cheerleader from school" at times, but so are many other characters like Liz Allan and Sally Avril.

To be fair, from someone's perspective who hasn't read all these comics, it isn't just Mary Jane who suffers from this copy/paste problem. Not only do we not need 15 different Green Goblin knockoffs, we also don't need Carlie Cooper as the love interest whose father is a cop when we have Gwen Stacy whose father is Captain George Stacy, for instance.

Back to Black Cat, take Catwoman into consideration. Selina Kyle's relationship with Bruce Wayne and the whole vigilante/Batman idea is the same situation, which makes a character like Vicki Vale stand out as an entirely different love interest for Bruce. Vale is a reporter who could expose Bruce's secret identity.

Hence why we have Betty Brant for Spider-Man. She's the Vicki Vale, in some ways. Not exactly, obviously, but there are some parallels. As well as the whole Gwen Stacy having a cop for a father idea.

So if she can't just be the hot girl or the sexy and confident knockout to prove he hit the jackpot when he could just as easily get with Felicia Hardy or many others...who is Mary Jane?

Mary Jane isn't the smart and nerdy girl who Peter sees himself in, like Indira, Debra, sometimes Gwen, etc. Does that make her the dumb one to offset how intelligent he is? Yikes!

If you're judging a book by its cover and saying "but she's the redhead", then that's sad—and even that isn't always true, sadly.

How the Superhero Genre Adapts Over Time

As these superhero stories last decades, aspects of their stories need to change as time goes on.

Sometimes, the entire character is given a full reboot to be something different, like how Jaime Reyes is a much more different Blue Beetle than Ted Kord. Other times, like the Dan Garrett transition to Ted Kord, or with all the Green Lanterns or most of the Flash characters, they have a new person behind the mask, but many of the core elements remain the same.

Superman used to not be able to fly, but that eventually became the most iconic part about him. Batman used to use guns until it was the central character trait that he not only didn't use them, but also didn't kill at all.

In the same way that you don't see Clark Kent change his clothes in a phone booth since they don't exist anymore, and Superman isn't "more powerful than a locomotive" now that trains aren't as prominent, Peter Parker has gone through similar changes.

Modern day Spider-Man doesn't function 100% the same as what it used to be, outside of the origin story of getting bitten by a spider that has something weird about it (frequently not radioactive anymore; sometimes the origin of the lab can be Oscorp or another place), failing to stop Uncle Ben's killer (sometimes after a wrestling match, sometimes other details), and taking on the motto that "with great power comes great responsibility."

But look at J. Jonah Jameson and how much he's changed since even the Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire movies!!

Technology has completely altered the way that character functions in just the span of 10 years, even, as no emphasis was put on this for the Andrew Garfield series, since many elements had already become outdated.

Nobody reads newspapers anymore, and Peter cannot be a photographer who sells pictures of himself to Jameson because everyone has cell phones and reads their news digitally. Hence why Jameson is now an Alex Jones type who is more likely to pop up on a YouTube channel ranting about Spider-Man—the fundamental aspect of his character that has maintained over time—than to be Peter's boss.

I think the franchise still hasn't quite settled on what Peter's alternative job is. They seem keen on making him a professor and/or scientist, but that doesn't work for the younger teenager. Sometimes, he could be a lab assistant, I guess, yet if he's doing that job, you'd wonder how they could maintain the money struggle aspect of the character that has been one of his major problems.

Going back to Mary Jane, she was brought onto the scene as a gag. Aunt May wanted to set him up with her, and he kept dodging that, until it turned out she was actually this smoking hot sassy girl. Jackpot indeed, especially if you found the goody two-shoes Gwen to be boring, right?

In the Maguire films, wherein Gwen isn't a factor until appearing pretty much in name only in the awful third film, Mary Jane is upgraded to the literal "girl next door" trope that Peter's been in love with since they were kids, but was always out of his reach, as she's the hot popular girl and he's the shy nerd.

That makes sense and is a massive step forward, but it has a limited shelf-life. That's why her character is only ever still an object of affection to be obtained. That carries over into the second film, because she has no character beyond that. If she's not "the one Peter is going after", who is she? The model who can't act? That's an unnecessary side plot we don't care about any more than if we found out Wonder Woman's love interest Steve Trevor has a fantasy football team.

Everything needs to be in service of the driving the main character's story along.

This is why Lois Lane is such an important part of the Superman story. She's feisty while Clark isn't. Clark is more of the book smart nerd who can be naive, while Lois struggles with spelling, but is incredibly street smart and intuitive. Lois is more of a cynic, while Clark is more hopeful. He's otherworldly and she grounds him. Plus, she's got the whole reporter/superhero dynamic, too, giving her two functions inside the story for both Clark and Kal-El.

Where Does That Leave Mary Jane Watson in the 2020s?

Lois Lane is a good way to transition to modern day Mary Jane, as it seems this is what their inspiration was for the most recent video game series and some of the Ultimate series.

MJ was positioned as the one who works for the Daily Bugle, not Peter. Now, she's an investigative journalist, who is filling the Lois role of looking into things behind the scenes to further the plot along.

Gone are the "super hot confident model/actress" traits, because those are surface-level and have nothing to do with being an investigative journalist reporter type.

Outside of not just being named Lois Lane, this version of MJ might as well be an entirely different character—not that we need any more, especially since this also could have more easily just been Betty Brant if that were the case.

They seem bent on the journalist character, as that's carried over even into the Ultimate Spider-Man show, where it seems (I haven't watched it all) that she's not even really a factor, just like how they avoided MJ in The Amazing Spider-Man in favor of Gwen (minus some deleted scene content), and it seems as though Spectacular Spider-Man just has her as another hot popular cheerleader side character and nothing more, correct?

But let's talk about the MCU version and how awful that character is.

First off, she's not even Mary Jane Watson. She's Michelle Jones, referred to at the end of the first film as MJ, and then once more retroactively given the surname Jones-Watson to be MJ-Watson.

Mary Jane is one of the most iconic redhead characters out there, alongside others like Black Widow, The Little Mermaid Ariel, Daphne Blake from Scooby-Doo, Poison Ivy, Jessica Rabbit and April O'Neil.

Naturally, they got rid of that, along with the name.

As far as her character is concerned, she's a cynical joyless pseudo-friend (basically acquaintance at best) in the background of Homecoming while Peter is interested in Liz Toomes (who is one of many "not really the character Liz Allan, but whatever, we messed up a bunch of these; just look at Betty and Flash and...)

At no point in the first film does Peter have any real flirtation with Michelle, who I've long maintained should have been Michele Gonzales instead, to keep that up.

Suddenly, in the second film, he's head over heels for her. Why? No reason. He just is. There isn't anything explaining what it is about her that he likes. He's just madly in love. Okay. Whatever.

That carries over into the third film and that's about it.

But for argument's sake, let's say the franchise wanted to take aspects of this version of the character and incorporate that into the overall Mary Jane Watson concept. That would mean she would be, at best, a very smart (Gwen/Debra/Indira/etc) classmate (too many to name) who has a darker personality  compared to Peter (Felicia) and....that's it.

"You're a deeply mistrusting person, and I respect that."

As far as a reinvention, this doesn't really check off many boxes necessary to stand the test of time.

So Who SHOULD Mary Jane Watson Be?

As far as I'm concerned, taking Superman as the template, we need to sort out Peter Parker's love life with the pros and cons—or, the reflections that are positive versus the reflections that are too negative for him to end up with that person.

Felicia Hardy has the darker reflection gimmick down. She's also more of the sex appeal and is the object of pure lust in many ways. She's the thrill and the vigilante with the passion and burns red hot, but the flame dies quickly. Take that "hot girl" angle away from Mary Jane Watson.

Betty Brant has the coworker at the Daily Bugle thing down. She's a receptionist, but making her a reporter isn't a stretch. There's your Vicki Vale and Lois Lane tropes. Take that away from Mary Jane.

Gwen is the "girl next door" in the sense of being the "good girl" heart rather than the literal next door neighbor, but might as well be if you're merging the characters together. She also happens to have a cop father, and can often be written as Peter's intellectual equal. Take those away from Mary Jane.

You're left with a few character tropes that can merge a lot of characters into just a few roles:

  1. The hot popular girl who Peter fawns over, but she doesn't look at him that way because he's a shy nerd. = Liz Allan, Sally Avril, etc
  2. The temptation vigilante bad girl that Peter can't help but to be into, but he knows it won't work out in the end = Felicia Hardy
  3. The coworker, classmate, or roommate who is a byproduct of just being around them = Michele Gonzales, Betty Brant, many schoolmates and such
  4. The good girl, girl-next-door who is emotionally supportive = Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane sometimes, etc
  5. The intellectual equal = Gwen at times, Debra, Indira, Lian Tang, etc
  6. The unfortunate daughter of a cop which offsets Peter as a vigilante = Gwen, Carlie (this trope would also apply if Jameson ever had a daughter Peter was involved in)

I feel like the only way to have your cake and eat it, too, with how this franchise is trying to make Mary Jane fill the Lois Lane role is to lean less into the investigative journalism side and make her the photographer who works at The Daily Bugle. That goes with the modeling and actress thing, too. But then, you almost have to make her someone who is chasing Spider-Man for clout, rather than someone Peter's lusting over.

Maybe that's the evolution of the character, making her less of Peter Parker's ultimate endgame girl he ends up with, and more of another failed romance like Felicia Hardy.

And that brings me to a revelation that I didn't have until recently. All these years, I've remained staunch that MJ is Peter's true love, but I'm realizing that's just a bias I have because I grew up with the animated series and the Maguire films.

In reality, I think I've come full circle to thinking Gwen Stacy is Peter's true love.

She just works better as a more fully-fleshed out character with more avenues, being the intellectual equal and supportive girl next door with a cop father which makes sense why she'd be more willing to put up with his heroism, because she understands what it's like, having had a father who fought crime.

Otherwise, what role does Mary Jane serve but to be the backup option after Gwen dies who is just another supportive girlfriend and physical object of his affection who can't contribute to the story without being a Lois Lane ripoff, in need of rescuing from peril, and/or just arguing with Peter to create unnecessary tension and proving they aren't actually a good couple?

Or, you can just judge a book by its cover and say Mary Jane Watson is the redhead who dates Spider-Man and this long-winded wall of text that I wrote up at 4am is just a fan geeking out too much over the specifics and I should go to bed, right?

Week in Geek: Scarlett Johansson Suing Disney, 14 South Park Movies and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Thursday, August 5, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Week in Geek was put on hold for a few weeks as I've been dealing with a loss in the family and tons of other scheduling issues. Rather than trying to cram everything in halfheartedly, I've decided to use this as a jumping-off point where Week in Geek might not necessarily be every single week if there isn't anything to talk about. Instead, things may carry over from one week to the next if a story is evolving, or if there just isn't anything else going on that I wanted to voice my opinions about.

As such, let's recap a few weeks of things that I would have been mentioning had I been able to:

Old

I was able to check out M. Night's new film, Old. It wasn't something that I was overwhelmingly excited about on the level of Avengers: Endgame or anything, but it looked interesting and I figured I'd give it a shot after the strength of Split and Glass.

It's fine. The movie's not something I'd recommend to anyone on more than a one-watch basis for something to kill time. It's not particularly ambitious or anything that I'd imagine will stay in my head for much longer, nor would I likely revisit it and rewatch it in the future. However, it did its job. I was entertained and the mystery kept my attention all throughout.

I Believe in Matt Damon

Matt Damon revealed that he had been offered the part of Harvey Dent for The Dark Knight.

I KNEW IT. I had been saying for years that Damon would have been a fantastic choice for Dent and one of my top fan cast picks.

I just wanted to tout that I've been saying that into a void and that it seems I'm not the only one.

Ironheart in Wakanda Forever

Rumors say Riri Williams will make an appearance in the next Black Panther film.

Call me crazy, but I just don't think this is a good idea. Wouldn't her inclusion kind of diminish Shuri's role that she had established? Then again, I'm in the camp of "T'challa should have been recast" so I guess I shouldn't be talking, according to some people who have a different opinion.

In an ideal world, my Black Panther 2 would have been T'challa, Shuri, Okoye, Nakia and M'Baku with Everett Ross as our core protagonist group (M'Baku with a smaller role, most likely, as the leader of the armies) facing off against Namor and a few others. You could put Namora/Namorita in opposition to Shuri, have Attuma or Krang as the secret TRUE bad guy so Namor can turn good (well, antihero).

Then, they could have had a Namor spin-off film that incorporated characters like Walter Newell, Andromeda, Dorma, and either Attuma or Krang is the main villain (whichever you didn't use) along with Orka, Piranha, Tiger Shark...whatever it might be.

I don't think a film surrounding Shuri becoming Black Panther, nor some other guy just filling in the role, while dealing with the death of T'challa, after the first film was all about that in a similar way, that happens to also focus any bit of time on just going "Hey, Ironheart's a show coming up. You might want to check that out, guys!" is the best course of action.

In the past, I've mostly said Marvel can do no wrong. However, these Disney+ shows haven't been exactly their best work in my opinion, nor was Black Widow. I'm starting to think the team has exhausted a lot of their creativity and is coasting a bit.

Werewolf By Night

Another rumor says Werewolf By Night will be a Disney+ series. I hope that's not the case.

Admittedly, I'm not familiar with the character outside of an extremely basic sense. However, it seems like it's just another typical werewolf story. That's been done a million times on a thousand shows and movies. It's not something I want to invest 6+ hours into watching.

Make that a character who pops up on a Midnight Sons show. Make it a show that revolves around a team of characters dealing with the dark and mystical side of things where they can encounter werewolves and the like. Just do Ghost Rider, Daimon Hellstrom, Morbius (would have been better than a solo film, I think), Blade, Man-Thing, Moon Knight and Jericho Drumm (but maybe don't call him Brother Voodoo as that kind of seems a bit dated).

Venom: Let There Be Carnage Trailer

Carnage looks great sometimes and too much like wonky CGI in other shots.

I still think Woody wasn't necessarily the right person for the job. That was fan casting that people had mentioned for so many years, but it doesn't mean he's the best and only person who could have pulled it off.

The first Venom film was fine, but not great. I can't help but to feel this will be similar and that everyone who has high expectations will be let down, particularly when it comes to Carnage. They're not going to make him the brutal serial killer R-rated slaughter machine and you know it, deep down.

New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie

TMNT is a property that I think you can pretty much keep recycling, but the more you do it with "your own spin on it", the less anyone will care.

As a kid, I loved the cartoon and the first two films. As an adult, the first film 100% holds up and is still fantastic, while the second is still pretty great in a lot of ways.

The Megan Fox films...well, they had a few good ideas and more than a few really bad ones. They're what you get when you have too many chefs messing with the soup.

Is it awful to say someone should just commission me to write up a trilogy and I think I'd do a better job? Maybe. It's presumptuous and pretentious and arrogant, but if I didn't believe that, I wouldn't have notes already written up for a trilogy that I'm confident would be great, wouldn't I?

If this Jost production comes to fruition, I'm certainly going to check it out. All the films get a watch by me. The TV shows, not so much. That's too long of a commitment.

South Park's Deal with Paramount +

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have worked out a deal with Paramount+ to do 14 movies (2 per year). That's good news for them and for P+, which needs content. I don't know if this is going to specifically bump up the subscribers, as South Park isn't as big as it once was, but they seem to get a resurgence every few years. Maybe another is right around the corner.

South Park is a show that hasn't gone downhill in the same way The Simpsons or Family Guy did. Parker and Stone have it in them to make some great content in the future and I'll definitely be checking these things out. I just hope that it's more of the Mysterion arc and less of Randy with the weed, as that's not been my favorite material.

Scarlett Johansson Suing Disney

Based on Black Widow not just being released in theaters, Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney for cutting into her profits. Emma Stone may do the same for Cruella.

Frankly, I get it. I support the initiative. If they had it in their contracts that they negotiated a price tag based on being able to earn a percentage of the profits, then Disney made a decision to do something that would cut into that while not cutting out their own profits in the process, that's a duplicitous deal.

HOWEVER, and this is a big however...I don't think they have much ground to stand on. This wasn't done out of nowhere. The pandemic wasn't something they saw coming when they settled on this deal and the past 2 years have been mired with confusing theatrical release structures. Disney's got to look out for its own best interests in a lot of ways and this is a circumstance I can imagine they never would have gone down had COVID-19 not been a thing.

My guess is the lawsuit gets dropped. Scarlett gets a settlement to compensate her for a decent chunk of money she might have potentially earned. Disney sets the precedent that people shouldn't consider doing this in the future. Upcoming deals have clauses in their contracts that state specifics about these sorts of situations and people are less likely to be willing to get a percentage of the profits until the pandemic settles, which for all we know could take years based on how everyone just keeps being irresponsible.

Week in Geek #160: Big Brother Season 23 First Impressions and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Tuesday, July 13, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Big Brother Season 23 First Impressions

I usually mentally block people off into 5 categories, which would be the following:

A) My favorites = Britini, Frenchie (although this is based on episode 1 and apparently, he's coming out to be kind of a scumbag after that, from what I've seen? If that's the case, you can bet he goes from A to E)

B) The ones I like and might like even more, but might fall down the ladder, too = Azah, Claire, Derek F, Derek X, Tiffany, Xavier

C) No opinion yet = Alyssa, Christian, Kyland, Sarah, Travis, Whitney

D) Not feeling them and I doubt my POV will change = Brent, Hannah

E) I absolutely dislike them = Nobody yet, thankfully...unless the Frenchie stuff is true. I'm judging this entirely based on just the first episode and nothing else as I haven't checked out the live feeds.

My shot in the dark prediction for who will win this season is Claire.

Hopes and Theories for Loki's Season Finale

Here's what I'm hoping to see:

  • A direct reference to Kang the Conqueror being behind things.
  • Loki and Sylvie have a happy ending of some sort.
  • Loki and Sylvie, along with Mobius and Hunter B-15, are now spearheading the TVA with a new directive to solve actual anomalies and not just police whatever bad agenda was behind all this.
  • Some kind of clarification about how the timeline is restored and how the multiverse plays into this, rather than some "IDK! Find out later, maybe!" cop out.
  • I'd love to see an appearance from Thor, but that's not happening.

Here's what I think will happen:

  • The main villain will end up just being another variant of Loki.
  • Everything will be kept ambiguous as to how this factors into the future of the MCU
  • There may be some sort of tease that Classic Loki is still alive.

The Dreamscapes of Justice League: A Motion Comic

Zack Snyder's storyboards for his original sequels to Justice League are being adapted into a motion comic. I'd love to check it out, even though I think the plot for that was all over the place and not necessarily good, as well as I'm not a fan of motion comics. But I love when projects like this are expanded upon, as I see no reason why these things can't exist in some fashion. I'd love to see an animated version of Tim Burton's Superman Lives, for instance, even though that thankfully was never actually made.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Boba Fett's Starship is No Longer the Slave I

Disney isn't calling Boba Fett's iconic starship as "Slave I" anymore. To date, there's no alternative name. It's just "Boba Fett's Starship" on LEGO promotional material.

I understand the decision. While you can make the argument "this doesn't erase slavery" and "the term 'slave' is still valid", I'd present to you "But why would Disney want to open the discussion at all if they can avoid it entirely?"

I think they need to rechristen it during The Book of Boba Fett, though. Something needs to happen where he proclaims that he's the man in power now and he's casting aside his "slave" name, in a sense. I'll go so far as to say it should be rechristened something like King I.

Optimus Primal Voice

Ron Perlman will voice Optimus Primal in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Perfect. Awesome. He's got the voice to play that role 100%.

Megan Fox Wants in on Marvel and DC

Like everyone, if she's the right fit for a part, give her a role! I think she'd work better in Marvel than in DC, since DC feels like it would be a one-off that would cast her more for her name than for her actually being the right choice for that particular part.

Off the top of my head, though, I can't think of any roles she'd be my first choice to cast other than how she would make a fantastic Black Cat if the age difference wasn't there.

The Tomorrow War

Got a chance to check this movie out. It's a perfectly fine watch if you're looking to kill some time. I doubt anyone's going to have it on their "best of 2021" lists in any fashion, but I enjoyed it enough to not want to shut it off at 6am and to get through to the end.

It doesn't do anything great, but it does everything okay.

The Wrecking Crew on She-Hulk

Rumor has it that classic group of villains is FINALLY going to be showing up in She-Hulk. Even though I can't sit here and say they should have been a priority by any means, I'm surprised they haven't been used by now. I just imagined they would have been one of the go-to villain options for something like Luke Cage or some quick throwaway mooks Thor would have fought in #2 or something along those lines.

She-Hulk might be the best overall fit for them, come to think of it. They're important enough that fans of the comics will go "Oh yeah! Cool!" while more casuals will take it just fine. Also, they're vague enough that you can play around with their origins and casting without those more dedicated fans being too upset about changes.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Beast Wars

The next Transformers has been revealed to be titled "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts". I'm not in the slightest bit shocked. After this series has been run through the ringer, this was the absolute easiest and best way for them to do something that would excite the fan base and try to breathe new life into it.

I'd have gone with a different title than Rise of the Beasts, though. That's pretty generic and lame. Hell, they should have just called it "Transformers: Beast Wars"

Smallville Animated Series

Tom Welling has said that they're working on a continuation of the Smallville series in an animated format.

I'm 100% down for this. While Smallville had more than its fair share of problems, there were some things I really enjoyed about it. For the most part, his Clark Kent was something I enjoyed. Michael Rosenbaum was a great Lex Luthor. Erica Durance was a fantastic Lois Lane. Kristin Kreuk completely changed my perception of Lana Lang, too, and I always want that character to be Asian in some fashion nowadays.

The problem was always the CW aspect of it. The budget, the inability to do certain storylines and use certain characters (how do you have a Justice League with "Not Superman", Green Arrow who uses a crossbow, Cyborg in a hoodie, Impulse instead of Flash, and Aquaman? C'mon). Maybe an animated version will allow them to go full-force with it.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Trailer

The last trailer wasn't super duper impressive to me. It was mostly appealing to a pure action audience that would want to see it after Fast 9 or something. This one, while it does still focus on action more than pure plot, did more to get me invested in it.

As I said before, I'm seeing it opening night no matter what, cause it's an MCU film. But now, I'm a little more into it specifically.

Also, was that Fin Fang Foom? Also also, was that Abomination?!

Loki Episode 3

Are they officially going with a merge between Enchantress/Sylvie Lushton and "Variant Loki"? If so, I'm 100% down for it. However, if their flirtation keeps going, it's going to lend itself to lots of discussion about whether or not a parallel reality version of yourself is technically masturbation or not haha.

I dig the show quite a bit. I do admit I felt a little empty at the end of this one, wishing there was more of a resolution for this particular story (obviously not the full show yet). But they got me interested in how they're going to get out of this. My guess is Mobius will have tracked them down and deciphered they're in this apocalypse and will interfere, since he knows it's not going to change anything.

Olivia Wilde's Spider-Woman Film

In one of those "secrets that everyone knew, so why did they even bother trying to act like it wasn't the reality of the situation", Olivia Wilde's Spider-Man offshoot film is going to focus on Jessica Drew, Spider-Woman.

Duh.

Now can we just probably not do this, along with all the other movies Sony wants to do? Then, can we let the people over at the proper MCU use these down the line before you ruin them?

Week in Geek #157: Heroes Don't Go Down? and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, June 18, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Kraven vs Chameleon

That Kraven film that I think is a bad idea? Well, rumor has it, there's another bad idea going on for the villain, which would be Chameleon.

Just because they're related doesn't mean they should fight each other.

Kraven is best as a hunter of Spider-Man and Chameleon is best as someone who is framing someone like Spider-Man. This definitely shouldn't be some "Kraven gets framed and now the hunter has become the hunted" thing.

Batman Never Goes Down

...on Catwoman, apparently.

A scene in the upcoming season of the Harley Quinn cartoon was going to show Batman "going down on Catwoman" that was nixed because DC said "Heroes don't do that."

"We sell consumer toys for heroes. It's hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone."

I'd love to see what the context of this was, cause it seems kind of ridiculous that such a fuss was made about this on a show that is silly as hell.

Titans Season 3 Teaser

Joker is going to kill Jason Todd and we're going to get Red Hood?! Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude!

Loki Theories

After having watched episode 2, I'm thinking a few things about the trajectory of this series:

  • Lady Loki is an amalgamation of that character and Enchantress.
  • The TVA will undoubtedly be villains, but I don't think Mobius is one of the problems. I'm expecting Renslayer to be the other true main villain. She's either acting on behalf of corrupt Timekeepers or they don't even exist (at least anymore) and she's just pretending that they are so she can have her control with some ominous beings above her that people fear.
  • I had thought Loki was going to willingly reset the timeline and fix the error from stealing the Tesseract. Now, I think they're going to keep him as part of the TVA and it will be something where he's going to keep doing this job, having found his calling (and glorious purpose).
  • Even though we should see Kang, I don't think we will.

Week in Geek #156: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Skaar in She-Hulk, and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, June 12, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Masters of the Universe Trailer

I'm not a fan of the series, but Kevin Smith's animated show set to come out on Netflix actually looks like it might be kind of worth watching! I might have to check it out.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

That is the title of the sequel film. Not knowing what the plot is, I think it just sounds like it makes sense, so I'm down for it. Of course, I don't think there's really a lot of momentum for this film to begin with and I wouldn't mind efforts being focused on something else, but the first one was fine, so I'll check it out.

Ben Mendelsohn and Forest Whitaker Returning for Andor

Rumor has it we'll see Orson Krennic and Saw Gerrera returning in the Andor prequel show.

Frankly, I don't think the former's true, but the latter is. A quick appearance from Whitaker wouldn't be too difficult, but I don't know how you'd get Krennic showing up in a story about Andor when their paths don't theoretically cross until the events of Rogue One.

Disney+ Plans for Free Access to Black Widow

As the world opens back up again (whether or not that's a good idea), Black Widow is releasing in theaters, but you can pay $30 for the Premier Access on Disney+. But when is it coming to the regular Disney+ for just the standard subscription cost?

Apparently, October 6th. Basically, you're going to have to wait 3 months. All things considered, that's not bad. We used to have to wait a lot longer to get DVDs and if you're interested in seeing the movie, you'll go see it in the first 2 weeks.

Skaar

Rumor has it Skaar—the son of Hulk—is going to appear in some fashion in She-Hulk.

I don't buy it. I think this is the type of thing that gets put out there because there's a relation to the character and it creates some buzz.

What I would believe is that Amadeus Cho could appear, as Dr. Helen Cho was in Age of Ultron and we haven't seen her since then. I'd also buy into some totally random supporting characters that even I know nothing about, like Marlo Chandler, Kate Waynesboro and others maybe being in there. Frankly, I'm surprised Rick Jones hasn't been in the MCU yet, too.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Lucifer Season 5 Part B

DAN. That made me sad. I see why they went in that direction, but it definitely got me in the gut that he was killed off. I commend them for doing it, though. He did start off the show as a corrupt cop and it's interesting to put him in a scenario where he has to go to Hell because of not getting over that.

This certainly felt like the end of the series, as it was intended to be. It seems like one more episode or two would be all that they needed to wrap things up: put Dan in Heaven, come to terms with Lucifer being the new God, possibly make Charlie an angel after all, clarify Chloe's true purpose and maybe wrap it up with God saying this was all his plan. Oh, and Lopez needs to find out and serve some kind of bigger picture role, too.

At this point, what is there left to do with Linda or Maze, for instance? I'm curious what the next season will be about for them.

I loved a lot of this season. God's appearances were fantastic. I loved seeing characters mature and actually advance, rather than circle back to previous tropes just to prolong things like a lot of other television shows do.

The show does sort of feel like it's done mostly everything it can do, so I'm okay with it ending in the next season, even though my brain tells me "more of a good thing is what you want." But hey, we didn't need that last extra season of Scrubs, right?

A Quiet Place Part II & Spin-off

Having seen Part 2 the other day, I enjoyed it. It's basically a somewhat lesser version of the previous film, but close to the same level of quality. If you liked the first one, I recommend it.

Apparently, there's a spin-off in development that won't be a direct sequel, but just something else in the same world space. Possibly a prequel. Maybe something that runs alongside or takes place after, but just doesn't focus on the family.

I've liked the previous two, so I'll be interested in seeing any other ones in the future so long as they have a good enough pitch and seem decent. They won me over and it'll be easier to keep me coming back. Kind of like The Purge from #2 onward.

I wouldn't mind if that was the end of it, though. I don't think I need to see the true end of the invasion, but I'd also be interested to see a story where they've wiped out most of the aliens and they're rebuilding.

Week in Geek #154: Eternals Teaser, Kraven the Hunter Casting and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Thursday, May 27, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Eternals Teaser

Well. That wasn't much. After all this time, all they bothered to release was basically a series of still images with nothing to really sink your teeth into? This felt more like a motion graphic you'd put up on Twitter rather than a true look at the film to convince anyone to see the movie. And look, I know that the MCU is just a brand in and of itself at this point that sells people on seeing the film based entirely on seeing the word Marvel. I'm obviously going to see this opening night. But since I have no fandom for the Eternals characters and most people are in the same boat I'm in, where we don't know these people, I think you need to sell audiences on more than "it's another MCU film"—especially if the jokes aren't all that funny and the visuals aren't anything we haven't seen before.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Cast as Kraven the Hunter

ATJ is a great actor. Everything I've seen him in, he's done a fantastic job, for the most part. But I don't picture him as Kraven whatsoever. Nor do I think doing a Kraven solo film is a good idea. I still maintain the better scenario would have been Kraven as the main villain of the third Spider-Man film, hunting down fugitive Peter Parker, who could team up with Daredevil and Black Panther (as Kraven could have ties to Wakanda). This just seems like a bad idea all around and I've been hating Sony's methodology of "we have characters, so let's just do tons of movies based on them". Nobody wanted to see a Jackpot film, for instance. Kraven isn't a solo movie guy, in my mind.

Sin

Rumor has it, the villain of Captain America 4 will be Red Skull's daughter, Sin.

I don't buy it. They just had both the Flag-Smashers and the Power Broker as female-led villains in the TV series and I can't imagine Sam having an all-out fist fight with another young red head girl as the follow-up. Hence why I think switching Morgenthau was a bad idea, or at least, they shouldn't have gone with "young redhead girl" as the archetype to change to.

Serpent Society/Squad could be a thing, maybe with Cutthroat and such. Blackwing, maybe, if they want to ignore Agent Carter. The Corporation? Doctor Faustus? Grand Director?

Stowaway

For a random viewing, I watched the film Stowaway on Netflix. Not bad, but I wouldn't recommend it for anything other than a quick watch that you don't need to be super invested in. 3/5 type film.

Week in Geek #153: Injustice Gods Among Us Film, Amazon Buying MGM and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Thursday, May 20, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Amazon Buying MGM

It's supposedly becoming more and more likely Amazon will be the ones to buy MGM and acquire the rights to the James Bond franchise as well as Rocky, RoboCop and some other IPs.

I was thinking Paramount would be the ones to win the bid, but Amazon surely has the money to spend $9 billion on this to bulk out Amazon Prime's list.

Ultimately, what I want is for these IPs to go to a good home that will support their best growth (rather than a studio that would get in the way and ruin the franchises) and for this streaming bubble to pop in a way that is beneficial to the subscribers and people can stop needing to sub to a million things. We need there to not be a monopoly, because competition breeds benefits for the consumers, but we also need to stop having a million of these where almost none of them are worth the monthly price.

Of course, there's this whole thing with AT&T and WarnerMedia and Discovery+ that is going to factor into the streaming wars, too, but I can't even wrap my mind around what's going on with that, to be honest. That whole situation is very clunky and confusing to me, for whatever reason. But if Amazon buys MGM, they might not be in the market to purchase WB assets, so we might see something like Comcast pick that up instead and the merger of the streaming wars could be hitting a big tipping point.

Snake Eyes Trailer

This is the most basic stuff imaginable. It very easily could have been a fan trailer. I might watch the film regardless, but the trailer did NOTHING to make me hyped.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Animated Film in the Works

At this point, you can't deny that Injustice: Gods Among Us hasn't been one of the most influential things in modern DC. I'm not even as huge of a fan of it as most people, but I'm still excited about the prospect of watching this story unfold in an animated film. Very cool!

Give me Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill and the regular folk for this, by the way.

New Animated Superman and Batman Shows Coming to HBO Max

Jack Quaid (from The Boys) is going to be a young Clark Kent in an upcoming Superman animated series, and J.J. Abram, Matt Reeves and Bruce Timm are helming a Batman animated series (Batman: Caped Crusader), both coming to HBO Max.

Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic No Longer in Development

The spin-off from The Mandalorian that was originally going to focus on Cara Dune has seemingly been shelved and is no longer in development. I'd imagine this is because, you know, the main character isn't going to be in the mix anymore. There were rumors they could replace her with Hera from Rebels, which would have been very cool. I've still maintained the idea that if you have no issues with the character of Cara Dune, but the actress, then you should just recast her. It's not as though that's never happened in the history of films and television shows. Frankly, I think it should/could happen more often than it does. Don Cheadle worked better than Terrence Howard for War Machine, right? We've had multiple James Bond actors. I doubt Cara Dune is above recasting.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Venom: Let There Be Carnage Trailer

Oh. Oh no. Oh this doesn't look like it's going to be better than the last film. In fact, it's looking like it might end up being somehow worse. This doesn't feel right. Carnage doesn't even look impressive, nor does Woody seem like he's got the type of character down that I've always envisioned in Cletus Kasady.

I have a bad feeling about this.

Legend of the Hidden Temple

LOTHT is returning, and it's going to be for adults? Yo! I used to love this show. I even have a Silver Snakes shirt from when I had set up a partnership to tie into New York Comic Con. This is awesome news!

Now give us Nick Arcade with Xavier Woods hosting the show, too. And GUTS should return.

Shang-Chi and Free Guy Sticking to Theaters

Both films are going to remain theater-only showings with a 45-day window, shortening their time before coming to streaming services, but not releasing on the same day. No Disney+ Premier service plans for these two, at least.

I'm all up for these companies experimenting. They need to. Without testing out several different methods, there's no way to know where the future is heading and how to best navigate those waters.

I'm still not feeling comfortable enough to go to theaters. I don't know if I'll be willing to do that by the time these come out. However, my need to see these MCU films before getting stuff spoiled may be the biggest factor in making me just go "screw it, I'll risk it" haha

Disney+ Hits a Wall

After a massive start and an amazing subscriber rate that shattered expectations, the bloom is off the rose.

Q2 reports are 103.6 million subscribers, which is 7 million short of their goal. Also, the average revenue per user is $3.99, down from $5.63.
