Week in Geek: Scarlett Johansson Suing Disney, 14 South Park Movies and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Thursday, August 5, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Week in Geek was put on hold for a few weeks as I've been dealing with a loss in the family and tons of other scheduling issues. Rather than trying to cram everything in halfheartedly, I've decided to use this as a jumping-off point where Week in Geek might not necessarily be every single week if there isn't anything to talk about. Instead, things may carry over from one week to the next if a story is evolving, or if there just isn't anything else going on that I wanted to voice my opinions about.

As such, let's recap a few weeks of things that I would have been mentioning had I been able to:

Old

I was able to check out M. Night's new film, Old. It wasn't something that I was overwhelmingly excited about on the level of Avengers: Endgame or anything, but it looked interesting and I figured I'd give it a shot after the strength of Split and Glass.

It's fine. The movie's not something I'd recommend to anyone on more than a one-watch basis for something to kill time. It's not particularly ambitious or anything that I'd imagine will stay in my head for much longer, nor would I likely revisit it and rewatch it in the future. However, it did its job. I was entertained and the mystery kept my attention all throughout.

I Believe in Matt Damon

Matt Damon revealed that he had been offered the part of Harvey Dent for The Dark Knight.

I KNEW IT. I had been saying for years that Damon would have been a fantastic choice for Dent and one of my top fan cast picks.

I just wanted to tout that I've been saying that into a void and that it seems I'm not the only one.

Ironheart in Wakanda Forever

Rumors say Riri Williams will make an appearance in the next Black Panther film.

Call me crazy, but I just don't think this is a good idea. Wouldn't her inclusion kind of diminish Shuri's role that she had established? Then again, I'm in the camp of "T'challa should have been recast" so I guess I shouldn't be talking, according to some people who have a different opinion.

In an ideal world, my Black Panther 2 would have been T'challa, Shuri, Okoye, Nakia and M'Baku with Everett Ross as our core protagonist group (M'Baku with a smaller role, most likely, as the leader of the armies) facing off against Namor and a few others. You could put Namora/Namorita in opposition to Shuri, have Attuma or Krang as the secret TRUE bad guy so Namor can turn good (well, antihero).

Then, they could have had a Namor spin-off film that incorporated characters like Walter Newell, Andromeda, Dorma, and either Attuma or Krang is the main villain (whichever you didn't use) along with Orka, Piranha, Tiger Shark...whatever it might be.

I don't think a film surrounding Shuri becoming Black Panther, nor some other guy just filling in the role, while dealing with the death of T'challa, after the first film was all about that in a similar way, that happens to also focus any bit of time on just going "Hey, Ironheart's a show coming up. You might want to check that out, guys!" is the best course of action.

In the past, I've mostly said Marvel can do no wrong. However, these Disney+ shows haven't been exactly their best work in my opinion, nor was Black Widow. I'm starting to think the team has exhausted a lot of their creativity and is coasting a bit.

Werewolf By Night

Another rumor says Werewolf By Night will be a Disney+ series. I hope that's not the case.

Admittedly, I'm not familiar with the character outside of an extremely basic sense. However, it seems like it's just another typical werewolf story. That's been done a million times on a thousand shows and movies. It's not something I want to invest 6+ hours into watching.

Make that a character who pops up on a Midnight Sons show. Make it a show that revolves around a team of characters dealing with the dark and mystical side of things where they can encounter werewolves and the like. Just do Ghost Rider, Daimon Hellstrom, Morbius (would have been better than a solo film, I think), Blade, Man-Thing, Moon Knight and Jericho Drumm (but maybe don't call him Brother Voodoo as that kind of seems a bit dated).

Venom: Let There Be Carnage Trailer

Carnage looks great sometimes and too much like wonky CGI in other shots.

I still think Woody wasn't necessarily the right person for the job. That was fan casting that people had mentioned for so many years, but it doesn't mean he's the best and only person who could have pulled it off.

The first Venom film was fine, but not great. I can't help but to feel this will be similar and that everyone who has high expectations will be let down, particularly when it comes to Carnage. They're not going to make him the brutal serial killer R-rated slaughter machine and you know it, deep down.

New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie

TMNT is a property that I think you can pretty much keep recycling, but the more you do it with "your own spin on it", the less anyone will care.

As a kid, I loved the cartoon and the first two films. As an adult, the first film 100% holds up and is still fantastic, while the second is still pretty great in a lot of ways.

The Megan Fox films...well, they had a few good ideas and more than a few really bad ones. They're what you get when you have too many chefs messing with the soup.

Is it awful to say someone should just commission me to write up a trilogy and I think I'd do a better job? Maybe. It's presumptuous and pretentious and arrogant, but if I didn't believe that, I wouldn't have notes already written up for a trilogy that I'm confident would be great, wouldn't I?

If this Jost production comes to fruition, I'm certainly going to check it out. All the films get a watch by me. The TV shows, not so much. That's too long of a commitment.

South Park's Deal with Paramount +

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have worked out a deal with Paramount+ to do 14 movies (2 per year). That's good news for them and for P+, which needs content. I don't know if this is going to specifically bump up the subscribers, as South Park isn't as big as it once was, but they seem to get a resurgence every few years. Maybe another is right around the corner.

South Park is a show that hasn't gone downhill in the same way The Simpsons or Family Guy did. Parker and Stone have it in them to make some great content in the future and I'll definitely be checking these things out. I just hope that it's more of the Mysterion arc and less of Randy with the weed, as that's not been my favorite material.

Scarlett Johansson Suing Disney

Based on Black Widow not just being released in theaters, Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney for cutting into her profits. Emma Stone may do the same for Cruella.

Frankly, I get it. I support the initiative. If they had it in their contracts that they negotiated a price tag based on being able to earn a percentage of the profits, then Disney made a decision to do something that would cut into that while not cutting out their own profits in the process, that's a duplicitous deal.

HOWEVER, and this is a big however...I don't think they have much ground to stand on. This wasn't done out of nowhere. The pandemic wasn't something they saw coming when they settled on this deal and the past 2 years have been mired with confusing theatrical release structures. Disney's got to look out for its own best interests in a lot of ways and this is a circumstance I can imagine they never would have gone down had COVID-19 not been a thing.

My guess is the lawsuit gets dropped. Scarlett gets a settlement to compensate her for a decent chunk of money she might have potentially earned. Disney sets the precedent that people shouldn't consider doing this in the future. Upcoming deals have clauses in their contracts that state specifics about these sorts of situations and people are less likely to be willing to get a percentage of the profits until the pandemic settles, which for all we know could take years based on how everyone just keeps being irresponsible.

Week in Geek #160: Big Brother Season 23 First Impressions and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Tuesday, July 13, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Big Brother Season 23 First Impressions

I usually mentally block people off into 5 categories, which would be the following:

A) My favorites = Britini, Frenchie (although this is based on episode 1 and apparently, he's coming out to be kind of a scumbag after that, from what I've seen? If that's the case, you can bet he goes from A to E)

B) The ones I like and might like even more, but might fall down the ladder, too = Azah, Claire, Derek F, Derek X, Tiffany, Xavier

C) No opinion yet = Alyssa, Christian, Kyland, Sarah, Travis, Whitney

D) Not feeling them and I doubt my POV will change = Brent, Hannah

E) I absolutely dislike them = Nobody yet, thankfully...unless the Frenchie stuff is true. I'm judging this entirely based on just the first episode and nothing else as I haven't checked out the live feeds.

My shot in the dark prediction for who will win this season is Claire.

Hopes and Theories for Loki's Season Finale

Here's what I'm hoping to see:

  • A direct reference to Kang the Conqueror being behind things.
  • Loki and Sylvie have a happy ending of some sort.
  • Loki and Sylvie, along with Mobius and Hunter B-15, are now spearheading the TVA with a new directive to solve actual anomalies and not just police whatever bad agenda was behind all this.
  • Some kind of clarification about how the timeline is restored and how the multiverse plays into this, rather than some "IDK! Find out later, maybe!" cop out.
  • I'd love to see an appearance from Thor, but that's not happening.

Here's what I think will happen:

  • The main villain will end up just being another variant of Loki.
  • Everything will be kept ambiguous as to how this factors into the future of the MCU
  • There may be some sort of tease that Classic Loki is still alive.

The Dreamscapes of Justice League: A Motion Comic

Zack Snyder's storyboards for his original sequels to Justice League are being adapted into a motion comic. I'd love to check it out, even though I think the plot for that was all over the place and not necessarily good, as well as I'm not a fan of motion comics. But I love when projects like this are expanded upon, as I see no reason why these things can't exist in some fashion. I'd love to see an animated version of Tim Burton's Superman Lives, for instance, even though that thankfully was never actually made.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Boba Fett's Starship is No Longer the Slave I

Disney isn't calling Boba Fett's iconic starship as "Slave I" anymore. To date, there's no alternative name. It's just "Boba Fett's Starship" on LEGO promotional material.

I understand the decision. While you can make the argument "this doesn't erase slavery" and "the term 'slave' is still valid", I'd present to you "But why would Disney want to open the discussion at all if they can avoid it entirely?"

I think they need to rechristen it during The Book of Boba Fett, though. Something needs to happen where he proclaims that he's the man in power now and he's casting aside his "slave" name, in a sense. I'll go so far as to say it should be rechristened something like King I.

Optimus Primal Voice

Ron Perlman will voice Optimus Primal in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Perfect. Awesome. He's got the voice to play that role 100%.

Megan Fox Wants in on Marvel and DC

Like everyone, if she's the right fit for a part, give her a role! I think she'd work better in Marvel than in DC, since DC feels like it would be a one-off that would cast her more for her name than for her actually being the right choice for that particular part.

Off the top of my head, though, I can't think of any roles she'd be my first choice to cast other than how she would make a fantastic Black Cat if the age difference wasn't there.

The Tomorrow War

Got a chance to check this movie out. It's a perfectly fine watch if you're looking to kill some time. I doubt anyone's going to have it on their "best of 2021" lists in any fashion, but I enjoyed it enough to not want to shut it off at 6am and to get through to the end.

It doesn't do anything great, but it does everything okay.

The Wrecking Crew on She-Hulk

Rumor has it that classic group of villains is FINALLY going to be showing up in She-Hulk. Even though I can't sit here and say they should have been a priority by any means, I'm surprised they haven't been used by now. I just imagined they would have been one of the go-to villain options for something like Luke Cage or some quick throwaway mooks Thor would have fought in #2 or something along those lines.

She-Hulk might be the best overall fit for them, come to think of it. They're important enough that fans of the comics will go "Oh yeah! Cool!" while more casuals will take it just fine. Also, they're vague enough that you can play around with their origins and casting without those more dedicated fans being too upset about changes.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Beast Wars

The next Transformers has been revealed to be titled "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts". I'm not in the slightest bit shocked. After this series has been run through the ringer, this was the absolute easiest and best way for them to do something that would excite the fan base and try to breathe new life into it.

I'd have gone with a different title than Rise of the Beasts, though. That's pretty generic and lame. Hell, they should have just called it "Transformers: Beast Wars"

Smallville Animated Series

Tom Welling has said that they're working on a continuation of the Smallville series in an animated format.

I'm 100% down for this. While Smallville had more than its fair share of problems, there were some things I really enjoyed about it. For the most part, his Clark Kent was something I enjoyed. Michael Rosenbaum was a great Lex Luthor. Erica Durance was a fantastic Lois Lane. Kristin Kreuk completely changed my perception of Lana Lang, too, and I always want that character to be Asian in some fashion nowadays.

The problem was always the CW aspect of it. The budget, the inability to do certain storylines and use certain characters (how do you have a Justice League with "Not Superman", Green Arrow who uses a crossbow, Cyborg in a hoodie, Impulse instead of Flash, and Aquaman? C'mon). Maybe an animated version will allow them to go full-force with it.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Trailer

The last trailer wasn't super duper impressive to me. It was mostly appealing to a pure action audience that would want to see it after Fast 9 or something. This one, while it does still focus on action more than pure plot, did more to get me invested in it.

As I said before, I'm seeing it opening night no matter what, cause it's an MCU film. But now, I'm a little more into it specifically.

Also, was that Fin Fang Foom? Also also, was that Abomination?!

Loki Episode 3

Are they officially going with a merge between Enchantress/Sylvie Lushton and "Variant Loki"? If so, I'm 100% down for it. However, if their flirtation keeps going, it's going to lend itself to lots of discussion about whether or not a parallel reality version of yourself is technically masturbation or not haha.

I dig the show quite a bit. I do admit I felt a little empty at the end of this one, wishing there was more of a resolution for this particular story (obviously not the full show yet). But they got me interested in how they're going to get out of this. My guess is Mobius will have tracked them down and deciphered they're in this apocalypse and will interfere, since he knows it's not going to change anything.

Olivia Wilde's Spider-Woman Film

In one of those "secrets that everyone knew, so why did they even bother trying to act like it wasn't the reality of the situation", Olivia Wilde's Spider-Man offshoot film is going to focus on Jessica Drew, Spider-Woman.

Duh.

Now can we just probably not do this, along with all the other movies Sony wants to do? Then, can we let the people over at the proper MCU use these down the line before you ruin them?

Week in Geek #157: Heroes Don't Go Down? and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, June 18, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Kraven vs Chameleon

That Kraven film that I think is a bad idea? Well, rumor has it, there's another bad idea going on for the villain, which would be Chameleon.

Just because they're related doesn't mean they should fight each other.

Kraven is best as a hunter of Spider-Man and Chameleon is best as someone who is framing someone like Spider-Man. This definitely shouldn't be some "Kraven gets framed and now the hunter has become the hunted" thing.

Batman Never Goes Down

...on Catwoman, apparently.

A scene in the upcoming season of the Harley Quinn cartoon was going to show Batman "going down on Catwoman" that was nixed because DC said "Heroes don't do that."

"We sell consumer toys for heroes. It's hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone."

I'd love to see what the context of this was, cause it seems kind of ridiculous that such a fuss was made about this on a show that is silly as hell.

Titans Season 3 Teaser

Joker is going to kill Jason Todd and we're going to get Red Hood?! Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude!

Loki Theories

After having watched episode 2, I'm thinking a few things about the trajectory of this series:

  • Lady Loki is an amalgamation of that character and Enchantress.
  • The TVA will undoubtedly be villains, but I don't think Mobius is one of the problems. I'm expecting Renslayer to be the other true main villain. She's either acting on behalf of corrupt Timekeepers or they don't even exist (at least anymore) and she's just pretending that they are so she can have her control with some ominous beings above her that people fear.
  • I had thought Loki was going to willingly reset the timeline and fix the error from stealing the Tesseract. Now, I think they're going to keep him as part of the TVA and it will be something where he's going to keep doing this job, having found his calling (and glorious purpose).
  • Even though we should see Kang, I don't think we will.

Week in Geek #156: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Skaar in She-Hulk, and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, June 12, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Masters of the Universe Trailer

I'm not a fan of the series, but Kevin Smith's animated show set to come out on Netflix actually looks like it might be kind of worth watching! I might have to check it out.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

That is the title of the sequel film. Not knowing what the plot is, I think it just sounds like it makes sense, so I'm down for it. Of course, I don't think there's really a lot of momentum for this film to begin with and I wouldn't mind efforts being focused on something else, but the first one was fine, so I'll check it out.

Ben Mendelsohn and Forest Whitaker Returning for Andor

Rumor has it we'll see Orson Krennic and Saw Gerrera returning in the Andor prequel show.

Frankly, I don't think the former's true, but the latter is. A quick appearance from Whitaker wouldn't be too difficult, but I don't know how you'd get Krennic showing up in a story about Andor when their paths don't theoretically cross until the events of Rogue One.

Disney+ Plans for Free Access to Black Widow

As the world opens back up again (whether or not that's a good idea), Black Widow is releasing in theaters, but you can pay $30 for the Premier Access on Disney+. But when is it coming to the regular Disney+ for just the standard subscription cost?

Apparently, October 6th. Basically, you're going to have to wait 3 months. All things considered, that's not bad. We used to have to wait a lot longer to get DVDs and if you're interested in seeing the movie, you'll go see it in the first 2 weeks.

Skaar

Rumor has it Skaar—the son of Hulk—is going to appear in some fashion in She-Hulk.

I don't buy it. I think this is the type of thing that gets put out there because there's a relation to the character and it creates some buzz.

What I would believe is that Amadeus Cho could appear, as Dr. Helen Cho was in Age of Ultron and we haven't seen her since then. I'd also buy into some totally random supporting characters that even I know nothing about, like Marlo Chandler, Kate Waynesboro and others maybe being in there. Frankly, I'm surprised Rick Jones hasn't been in the MCU yet, too.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Lucifer Season 5 Part B

DAN. That made me sad. I see why they went in that direction, but it definitely got me in the gut that he was killed off. I commend them for doing it, though. He did start off the show as a corrupt cop and it's interesting to put him in a scenario where he has to go to Hell because of not getting over that.

This certainly felt like the end of the series, as it was intended to be. It seems like one more episode or two would be all that they needed to wrap things up: put Dan in Heaven, come to terms with Lucifer being the new God, possibly make Charlie an angel after all, clarify Chloe's true purpose and maybe wrap it up with God saying this was all his plan. Oh, and Lopez needs to find out and serve some kind of bigger picture role, too.

At this point, what is there left to do with Linda or Maze, for instance? I'm curious what the next season will be about for them.

I loved a lot of this season. God's appearances were fantastic. I loved seeing characters mature and actually advance, rather than circle back to previous tropes just to prolong things like a lot of other television shows do.

The show does sort of feel like it's done mostly everything it can do, so I'm okay with it ending in the next season, even though my brain tells me "more of a good thing is what you want." But hey, we didn't need that last extra season of Scrubs, right?

A Quiet Place Part II & Spin-off

Having seen Part 2 the other day, I enjoyed it. It's basically a somewhat lesser version of the previous film, but close to the same level of quality. If you liked the first one, I recommend it.

Apparently, there's a spin-off in development that won't be a direct sequel, but just something else in the same world space. Possibly a prequel. Maybe something that runs alongside or takes place after, but just doesn't focus on the family.

I've liked the previous two, so I'll be interested in seeing any other ones in the future so long as they have a good enough pitch and seem decent. They won me over and it'll be easier to keep me coming back. Kind of like The Purge from #2 onward.

I wouldn't mind if that was the end of it, though. I don't think I need to see the true end of the invasion, but I'd also be interested to see a story where they've wiped out most of the aliens and they're rebuilding.

Week in Geek #154: Eternals Teaser, Kraven the Hunter Casting and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Thursday, May 27, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Eternals Teaser

Well. That wasn't much. After all this time, all they bothered to release was basically a series of still images with nothing to really sink your teeth into? This felt more like a motion graphic you'd put up on Twitter rather than a true look at the film to convince anyone to see the movie. And look, I know that the MCU is just a brand in and of itself at this point that sells people on seeing the film based entirely on seeing the word Marvel. I'm obviously going to see this opening night. But since I have no fandom for the Eternals characters and most people are in the same boat I'm in, where we don't know these people, I think you need to sell audiences on more than "it's another MCU film"—especially if the jokes aren't all that funny and the visuals aren't anything we haven't seen before.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Cast as Kraven the Hunter

ATJ is a great actor. Everything I've seen him in, he's done a fantastic job, for the most part. But I don't picture him as Kraven whatsoever. Nor do I think doing a Kraven solo film is a good idea. I still maintain the better scenario would have been Kraven as the main villain of the third Spider-Man film, hunting down fugitive Peter Parker, who could team up with Daredevil and Black Panther (as Kraven could have ties to Wakanda). This just seems like a bad idea all around and I've been hating Sony's methodology of "we have characters, so let's just do tons of movies based on them". Nobody wanted to see a Jackpot film, for instance. Kraven isn't a solo movie guy, in my mind.

Sin

Rumor has it, the villain of Captain America 4 will be Red Skull's daughter, Sin.

I don't buy it. They just had both the Flag-Smashers and the Power Broker as female-led villains in the TV series and I can't imagine Sam having an all-out fist fight with another young red head girl as the follow-up. Hence why I think switching Morgenthau was a bad idea, or at least, they shouldn't have gone with "young redhead girl" as the archetype to change to.

Serpent Society/Squad could be a thing, maybe with Cutthroat and such. Blackwing, maybe, if they want to ignore Agent Carter. The Corporation? Doctor Faustus? Grand Director?

Stowaway

For a random viewing, I watched the film Stowaway on Netflix. Not bad, but I wouldn't recommend it for anything other than a quick watch that you don't need to be super invested in. 3/5 type film.

Week in Geek #153: Injustice Gods Among Us Film, Amazon Buying MGM and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Thursday, May 20, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Amazon Buying MGM

It's supposedly becoming more and more likely Amazon will be the ones to buy MGM and acquire the rights to the James Bond franchise as well as Rocky, RoboCop and some other IPs.

I was thinking Paramount would be the ones to win the bid, but Amazon surely has the money to spend $9 billion on this to bulk out Amazon Prime's list.

Ultimately, what I want is for these IPs to go to a good home that will support their best growth (rather than a studio that would get in the way and ruin the franchises) and for this streaming bubble to pop in a way that is beneficial to the subscribers and people can stop needing to sub to a million things. We need there to not be a monopoly, because competition breeds benefits for the consumers, but we also need to stop having a million of these where almost none of them are worth the monthly price.

Of course, there's this whole thing with AT&T and WarnerMedia and Discovery+ that is going to factor into the streaming wars, too, but I can't even wrap my mind around what's going on with that, to be honest. That whole situation is very clunky and confusing to me, for whatever reason. But if Amazon buys MGM, they might not be in the market to purchase WB assets, so we might see something like Comcast pick that up instead and the merger of the streaming wars could be hitting a big tipping point.

Snake Eyes Trailer

This is the most basic stuff imaginable. It very easily could have been a fan trailer. I might watch the film regardless, but the trailer did NOTHING to make me hyped.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Animated Film in the Works

At this point, you can't deny that Injustice: Gods Among Us hasn't been one of the most influential things in modern DC. I'm not even as huge of a fan of it as most people, but I'm still excited about the prospect of watching this story unfold in an animated film. Very cool!

Give me Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill and the regular folk for this, by the way.

New Animated Superman and Batman Shows Coming to HBO Max

Jack Quaid (from The Boys) is going to be a young Clark Kent in an upcoming Superman animated series, and J.J. Abram, Matt Reeves and Bruce Timm are helming a Batman animated series (Batman: Caped Crusader), both coming to HBO Max.

Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic No Longer in Development

The spin-off from The Mandalorian that was originally going to focus on Cara Dune has seemingly been shelved and is no longer in development. I'd imagine this is because, you know, the main character isn't going to be in the mix anymore. There were rumors they could replace her with Hera from Rebels, which would have been very cool. I've still maintained the idea that if you have no issues with the character of Cara Dune, but the actress, then you should just recast her. It's not as though that's never happened in the history of films and television shows. Frankly, I think it should/could happen more often than it does. Don Cheadle worked better than Terrence Howard for War Machine, right? We've had multiple James Bond actors. I doubt Cara Dune is above recasting.

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Venom: Let There Be Carnage Trailer

Oh. Oh no. Oh this doesn't look like it's going to be better than the last film. In fact, it's looking like it might end up being somehow worse. This doesn't feel right. Carnage doesn't even look impressive, nor does Woody seem like he's got the type of character down that I've always envisioned in Cletus Kasady.

I have a bad feeling about this.

Legend of the Hidden Temple

LOTHT is returning, and it's going to be for adults? Yo! I used to love this show. I even have a Silver Snakes shirt from when I had set up a partnership to tie into New York Comic Con. This is awesome news!

Now give us Nick Arcade with Xavier Woods hosting the show, too. And GUTS should return.

Shang-Chi and Free Guy Sticking to Theaters

Both films are going to remain theater-only showings with a 45-day window, shortening their time before coming to streaming services, but not releasing on the same day. No Disney+ Premier service plans for these two, at least.

I'm all up for these companies experimenting. They need to. Without testing out several different methods, there's no way to know where the future is heading and how to best navigate those waters.

I'm still not feeling comfortable enough to go to theaters. I don't know if I'll be willing to do that by the time these come out. However, my need to see these MCU films before getting stuff spoiled may be the biggest factor in making me just go "screw it, I'll risk it" haha

Disney+ Hits a Wall

After a massive start and an amazing subscriber rate that shattered expectations, the bloom is off the rose.

Q2 reports are 103.6 million subscribers, which is 7 million short of their goal. Also, the average revenue per user is $3.99, down from $5.63.

Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner

The Green Lantern series coming to HBO Max has cast Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner, describing him as "a hulking mass of masculinity and, as rendered in the comics, an embodiment of 1980s hyper-patriotism, and yet, Guy is somehow likable."

That sounds like they get the character. I don't know Wittrock, so I don't know about his acting capabilities. However, he looks like he could be a solid pick based on just his appearance.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Updates

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever = Good title. I still have NO idea what the hell they're going to do with this plot without, you know, T'challa...the Black Panther.

The Marvels = Uh.....I don't like it.

Some of the footage was neat. The hype trailer in general just saying "movies are coming back, dude" was nice in general, since I miss movies.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Officially No Longer MCU Canon

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Runaways and all those shows that were "part of the MCU" a few years ago are definitely no longer considered canon. They've been moved to the Legacy subcategory on Disney+, meaning Marvel is treating them as being just as extraneous as Ben Affleck's Daredevil film, the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man films, every version of Fantastic 4 we've seen on film, and so on.

This is a good thing, though. The shows weren't really meshing well with the MCU as it was. You can still enjoy them and try to force the head canon, but you're not beholden to them. That means if they want to bring the Inhumans into the MCU, they can do that without having to keep up the continuity of the terrible show.

Like established before, we can get a Daredevil played by Charlie Cox, but it can just be a "new" Daredevil that hasn't gone through the same stuff as the previous one. Just like J. Jonah Jameson being played by J.K. Simmons again doesn't mean it has to be the same guy from Maguire's films and the worlds merging together.

There were some good things in AOS. There were also a lot of bad things. For instance, I like their design for the Darkhold much better, but I didn't like Ghost Rider. I really liked Fitz-Simmons, Mack, and Melina May. Grant was cool, but once he became a literal octopus alien, nah. I'd like to see Mockingbird brought back, and Madame Hydra, and so on.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Deathstroke's Kills in The Batman

Apparently, had the original Batman film with Deathstroke happened, Slade Wilson would have killed some "regular characters" off. No confirmation, but it seems like it would have been at least Commissioner Gordon, if not also Alfred and maybe others.

While there were some amazing things with Zack Snyder's universe, there were a lot of horrendous mistakes, too. This would have been one of them. I have no idea what this fascination was to kill off Dick Grayson instead of Jason Todd, have Jimmy Olsen be replaced by another character fulfilling even less of a purpose and then being killed off like nothing, etc.

Sometimes, it feels like Snyder's decisions were made purely on "shaking things up" rather than the best narrative. It also felt like he and many others want to always skip to the end of a lot of things and never want to go down the journey. That's why we see Batman go from starting off his career to retiring all the time.

The Flash Logo

Generic. Bland. Meh. It's fine.

Vin Diesel for Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots

We knew it was a matter of time before this was adapted into a movie, and I'm not opposed to it. It's going to be ridiculous, as it should be.

Vin Diesel will supposedly be the main human character who befriends a robot, along with his son. Sounds like the most generic way to approach it, but I'm genuinely curious what they try to do with it.

Son of Sun and Knight of Night

Chris Terrio tossed out those titles as potential other options for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

It's a little too poetic for my tastes (says the guy who thinks Quantum of Solace is one of the best James Bond titles) but I dig it. I think as a movie, it doesn't work, but as a story, it's great.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Trailer

FINALLY got a look at this film...and...meh. The action looks like it will probably be cool, but I definitely need more substance than just that, and the characters are nothing for me at the moment.

Why do I get the feeling Awkwafina's character is going to annoy me, rather than be someone I find charming?

I'm sure it'll be better than I'm feeling right now. Well, I'm not SURE, but I'm fairly confident. After all, I've been wrong in the past, thinking Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man would be awful. But I've also been wrong on the other side, thinking WandaVision would be better than what it boiled down to.

I'll see it as soon as it comes out, for sure. I'll probably enjoy it quite a bit. But for right now, I'm not feeling amped.

How I Met Your Father

Hilary Duff is going to star in a rehash of How I Met Your Mother.

Didn't they already do this? Wasn't there a spin-off that failed miserably?

I'm not a fan of even trying this. You know why? Because I absolutely ADORED the original show. Up until the final few moments of the last episode, it was one of my favorite television shows of all time. That finale really docked it a ton of points, but I still think it's 99.9% wonderful. And it served its purpose.

You can't just do the same idea and think it's going to capture the same magic. What made the show was that it was slightly different from what we had seen before and the cast had amazing synergy. Just throwing Duff in there, replacing Mother with Father and calling it a day is nothing.

Pass.

Disney and Sony Reach a Deal for Spider-Man to Come to Disney+

One more step. I love this. Can Disney just buy out Sony already?

M.O.D.O.K. Trailer

Nope. I didn't laugh or even chuckle at any of it. I hate the animation style. This is a solid thumbs down for me.

Russell Crowe is Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder

You know what? Not only can I see it, I think it might be perfect!

93rd Academy Awards

Rather than doing the normal breakdown of the Oscars that I usually put a lot of time and effort into, this discussion is something we've done on the Patreon as a Bonus Feature podcast. Subscribe to that tier and check out what myself and Rob have to say about this year's list!

The Future of Week in Geek

I wanted to make the #150 edition of Week in Geek a special one, but I couldn't think of any topics worthwhile of elaborating on to make it something awesome. This, along with how many weeks have no more than a few topics worth mentioning, has me thinking that I might be changing Week in Geek in some fashion going forward. Maybe it would be better if it's released as a monthly thing, breaking down the particular weeks and having more content per post? Maybe it needs to end entirely? What do you think? Give me your thoughts on what you'd like to see with this and I'll heavily factor in whatever input you have!

Week in Geek #149: Mini-Pufts, Deadpool Animated Series and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Monday, April 12, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Ghostbusters Clip

A clip was released for the new Ghostbusters movie (that we should've already seen by now if the pandemic wouldn't have botched that) which shows mini Stay Puft marshmallow men.

I want them. They're adorable. It's also good to see that there seems to be a true reverence for the original film going on, rather than someone trying to shake up the formula for the sake of "Wouldn't it be interesting if I put my own spin on it?"

Deadpool R-Rated Animated Series

Remember how there was supposed to be an animated Deadpool show helmed by Donald Glover and then, it disappeared? It seems that might be back in the mix, but possibly now with Ryan Reynolds spearheading it.

I would have loved to see Donald Glover's take, but I'm also down for more Reynolds.

Lucy Liu for Shazam

Lucy Liu has been cast as Kalypso in the sequel to Shazam.

I'm not at all familiar with the character, so I can't weigh in on whether or not I think that's a great casting choice. It seems she'll be the sister of Helen Mirren's Hespera, but that doesn't do much to inform me on anything beyond that text.

Liu's a good actress, though. I guess we'll see what the direction of this story is before we can judge whether she's being wasted here or not.

Cobb Vanth and Others for The Book of Boba Fett

Slow news week, so I'll end things off with this. It's being reported that we can expect Cobb Vanth, Migs Mayfield, Greef Karga and Din Djarin to all appear in the Book of Boba Fett series.

This was expected, for the most part—at least, by me. I assumed there would be some of the characters to lead in to this while introducing new characters (who will inevitably show up on The Mandalorian and elsewhere, down the line, too).

This is all happening at the same time in the same universe, so why wouldn't they interact? Smart move.

Week in Geek #148: Adios New Gods and Trench, Hello Earth 2 Batman and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, April 3, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

New Gods and The Trench Shelved

Based on DC's track record and the fact that New Gods and The Trench were spin-offs, I knew there was no chance they were actually going to get made. Lo and behold, I was right.

Sadly, I would have been interested in seeing them. I don't think The Trench makes for a film unless you just want to do a generic monster film that happens to be called a DC property of sorts, but maybe James Wan had a pretty cool idea I'm unaware of. New Gods is something I think works better in theory than in execution, but Ava DuVernay might have done a great job with that, too.

Add it to the list of something like 30 films that have been announced, only to be taken off the schedule. Warner Bros has to stop tossing things out there and then backing down. Make a plan and stick to it where adjustments are the exception, not the rule.

The Batman = Earth 2

More hints that the Snyderverse is coming back is that Warner Bros have said Robert Pattinson's version is definitively on "Earth 2" (which doesn't make a lot of sense, considering Earth 2 is supposed to be a separate thing, but whatever, Marvel keeps having multiple 616 universes, so...)

This means it's a distinct continuity away from everything else, similar to how Joker isn't tied in with the others.

I'm 100% down for this. Warner Bros have shown that they can't pull off the MCU method of having everything planned out and connected, for whatever reason (lack of planning, foresight, etc) so if that's the case, just do separate stories and tie them in together if you can, when you can, but don't put embargos on characters anymore like you used to. Let's have multiple Batman versions at the same time and if audiences are confused, they can Google it and figure it out. It's not THAT complicated.

Olga Kurylenko in Black Widow

Only just now, it's coming out that Olga Kurylenko has a part in Black Widow. Rumor has it, she's playing Natasha's mother. Frankly, I can't see the resemblance, but if that's the case, I'm cool with it regardless. Kurylenko strikes me as someone who would be better off playing a different part in a different movie, though, and this might end up being a bit of a waste when she could do more of an action role.

Space Jam 2 Trailer

Well that...wasn't good. Then again, I wasn't expecting much more. It's not like the original is actually a great film. Take off the nostalgia goggles. It was fun when we were kids, but it's not actually "good" by any means. Hopefully, kids enjoy this. That's what is most important.

Week in Geek #147: The Suicide Squad Trailer, 007 in Doctor Fate and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, March 26, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Black Widow Release Date Update, Again

Black Widow has been once again pushed back. Instead of May 7, it's July 9. However, it seems like this time, they're going to stick to it, after well over a year of delays.

That's because it's going to be released with the Disney+ Premier Access at the same time, like what happened with Mulan. It seems as though Disney finally said "enough is enough, we have to get this movie out in some fashion" but still felt like they wanted to wait a few more months to maximize in-theater revenue.

With WandaVision being a disappointment overall for me, and the fact that so much time has gone by, I've honestly lost a lot of interest in Black Widow. I hope they blow me away.

Echo Spin-off

While everything is being held off and delayed further and further, we're still getting news about things to come. One of those is a spin-off of the Hawkeye show, which we have no idea when we'll see. This will revolve around Echo.

I'm not familiar enough with Echo to get excited about a show dedicated to the character. Frankly, I think it's probably an instance of stretching things a little too thin. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

How Much Slow Mo?

IGN calculated that around 10% of Zack Snyder's Justice League is in slow motion. 24 minutes and 7 seconds of slow motion footage for a 4-hour movie. That's pretty crazy, and I do think that some of those shots didn't need to be slow motion, as it wasn't essential or artistic enough from my perspective to make it a necessity.

Still, great film. That's just one of the nitpicks.

Ron Livingston Replaces Billy Crudup

Since Billy Crudup is out of The Flash as Henry Allen, he's been replaced by Ron Livingston.

While I like Livingston, I don't see this being quite as good. Crudup looked far more like he could be Ezra Miller's father. I have no problem with Livingston being able to pull off the role if I can get past that, though.

Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren has been cast as one of the villains in the Shazam sequel. I know nothing about Hespera, but I do know Mirren is great. Going with a new villain isn't normally something I'm super fond of, considering how many characters the comics can pull from. I still think Black Adam shouldn't be a solo film, for instance. Speaking of that, though...

Pierce Brosnan Cast as Doctor Fate in Black Adam

I never would have seen this coming if you gave me a thousand guesses. I like the idea of Brosnan being involved, though. He's not only my second-favorite James Bond, he's also someone I think shoudl have had a bigger career than what he did. There are probably a lot of people who could play Kent Nelson well, but I'm even more curious about this now that he's been cast, rather than if someone else would have.

Trailer for The Suicide Squad

A trailer for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad has finally been released. I was still hoping there would be some cooler heads prevailing who would change the name of this film at the last minute to something other than the same exact title from before, but with "The" in front of it. Even "Suicide Squad 2" or "Some Kind of Suicide Squad" or "Suicide Squad: Task Force X" or "Suicide Squad: Back in Action" or anything would have been better than "The Suicide Squad".

Anyway. Let's talk about the trailer. We already knew the cast looked amazing. It's also been clear from the start that Gunn is exactly the type of guy who could pull off something with the right level of quirkiness without being obnoxious and annoying like what happened with Birds of Prey. I still don't know if I'd go into this film expecting it to be good so much as fun but holy shit, we have King Shark and Starro. That's worth something. And how long before "Hand?" is a meme?

Week in Geek #146: Academy Awards 2021 Nominees, NoobMaster69 and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Sunday, March 21, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Academy Awards Nominees

Like 10 movies came out in 2020. Nobody saw any of them. Unfortunately, the options are to either go with another Oscars ceremony with "whatever" or to just not do it, and too much money is at stake to be lost by not having a ceremony at all.

For over 15 years, I've always done predictions for the Academy Awards, watched the show and tried to see as many of the films as I could.

That's not happening this year after seeing the list of nominees. In my mind, this year doesn't even really count.

Also, it's interesting that despite having almost literally no competition whatsoever, Tenet still couldn't get even nominated as Best Picture. I guess the academy had the same feelings I did.

RIP Yaphet Kotto

Actor Yaphet Kotto, best known in many circles for his roles in Alien and Live and Let Die, has passed away at age 81.

There's a weird bit of synchronicity going on with the A Review to a Kill series wherein the starting week, Tanya Roberts passed away. The week we recorded Moonraker, Nikki van der Zyl passed away. And now, the week Live and Let Die is released (we record them in advance), Yaphet Kotto is gone.

He's great as Kananga and one of the standouts of Alien, too. I think he was criminally underutilized in the industry and had he come around in the current era, he would have made an amazing MCU villain of some kind, too.

NoobMaster69

Aaron from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Apple Store employee played by D.C. Pierson, has been revealed as NoobMaster69 from Avengers: Endgame, in an Xbox commercial.

This is the kind of stuff I love that the MCU does. Sometimes, it's a bit hard to believe, such as the Peter Parker Iron Man 2 bit, but the fact that they don't forget about these things and repeatedly go back to enrich the other films makes it so good.

I think at this point, you can't even argue that this is the best overall series of all time with the highest success record both financially and critically. They're just in an entirely different league.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier First Impressions

I'll probably record a podcast on the Bonus Features of the Patreon diving into this. Stay tuned!

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Deadpool Taking Over Stan Lee's Cameos

There's a rumor going around that Ryan Reynolds is going to replace Stan Lee as the perpetual cameos in the MCU films going forward, reprising his role as Deadpool here and there.

If that's true...which I take with a big grain of salt...then I absolutely, absolutely love that idea. I think that's a magnificent way to take things into a new generation, break the fourth wall, pay tribute to Stan Lee and work some humor into all the films.

I really hope this is true, and I really hope the very first one of these is Deadpool calling out that he's the new Stan Lee in honor of him.

Avatar Beats Avengers: Endgame

Due to its re-releases, Avatar is now back above Avengers: Endgame for the highest-grossing film of all time.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Release Endgame some more, then. Let it reclaim its proper title!

That's pretty cheap to be released over and over again in order to rack up the dollars. Avatar doesn't deserve it.

Kiersey Clemons Back as Iris West / Billy Crudup Out

Kiersen Clemons was cast as Iris West for Justice League, with the assumption she'd be in The Flash. Since that film has taken forever to get off the ground, she eventually had to drop out. Now, it seems she's back, which is great. I thought she had potential to be a great Iris West.

Unfortunately, the same set of circumstances has led to Billy Crudup dropping out, so he'll be recast as Barry's father. I'm disappointed about that, for sure. I thought they had some pretty great casting with that idea and I'm hoping the scheduling conflicts get resolved.

Week in Geek #144: TI Gone from Ant-Man 3, Movie Release Date Changes and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, March 6, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

San Diego Comic-Con

Due to COVID still being a raging problem, SDCC is going to be a virtual event again this year, taking place July 23-25.

Look. That sucks. But it's not only the safest thing to do, it's also the most cost-efficient. Less and less big companies were doing things at SDCC and these events are becoming more about just autograph signings, merch stands and a hub for people to cosplay. While that's great for people who want to go specifically for those reasons (and doing a virtual thing is, of course, bad for those people/vendors), these types of shows are sadly dying out. It's not as feasible anymore to rent out such a huge space unless you're going to make your money back and with COVID being the way it is, that's just not possible, so why risk everyone's health in the process, too?

T.I. Gone from Ant-Man 3

The Hollywood Reporter claims Marvel's cutting dies with T.I. and not having him return for Ant-Man 3 due to apparently 11 alleged victims claiming sexual abuse and other things.

The allegations are another discussion, but in the context of the film itself (since this is a site about movies and such, rather than legal issues), I don't think this is a big deal. Sure, I'd always rather keep as many characters as possible, but I honestly couldn't even tell you his character's name. Luis is the real standout in that group with David Dastmalchian's character (can't tell you his name, either) as the #2. I don't think anyone will really feel like T.I.'s absence from the film will hinder it much.

Hera Syndulla for Rangers of the New Republic

Since Cara Dune isn't going to be a thing anymore (because instead of just recasting the part and keeping the plans, they're just going to kill off Gina Carano's character...shame to sacrifice the story for that), that rules out the potential main character of the Rangers of the New Republic series.

But if one rumor is true, it seems like they might replace her with Hera Syndulla. If that's the case, talk about an upgrade!

Zack Snyder's Justice League Chapters

There will be six chapters for the film, which are:

  1. Don't Count on it, Batman
  2. The Age of Heroes
  3. Beloved Mother, Beloved Son
  4. Change Machine
  5. All the King's Horses
  6. Something Darker

Neat. I like it. I'm really loving the idea that this will feel like more of an event than just a recut.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is Totally Going to Move Dates

The next Fast and Furious movie changed its date to the same day as Venom 2, which hasn't released a trailer yet. I think the next stage of this is pretty obvious. Venom will be announced to move to another date further down the line, likely closer to October. It'll want to stay away from battling a box office juggernaut during a pandemic time frame where theaters might still just not be open at all.

And so, everything else gets pushed even further back to 2022...2023...2024....

At least A Quiet Place Part II moved up from September to Memorial Day. That's something. I just want to watch these movies and I get that everyone is hoping theaters will open up the way they were before and billions of dollars will just flood in, but I don't think that's happening for another whole year, if not just because people like myself will still be cautious even if the option is there.

Lola Bunny

Lola Bunny has been redesigned for Space Jam: A New Legacy, and people on both sides of chiming in about this make no sense to me.

If you're wickedly upset...why are you so into a cartoon bunny needing to be super sexualized? You're weird.

But if you're so upset that Lola Bunny was drawn like that, to the point that you felt like you needed to undo that, you're also weird and you need to get your priorities in line if that's a big deal that you think you're fixing the world by changing.

It's a cartoon rabbit, people. There's a pandemic going on. Jeez.

Week in Geek #143: No Way Home for Spider-Man and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, February 27, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Mena Massoud for Ezra Bridger?

Rumor has it, and I like that rumor. He looks the part to me and I thought he was good enough in Aladdin. I could totally buy it.

Jennifer Lawrence as Sue Storm?

This...not as much. Lawrence doesn't strike me as the type of person who would want to sign on to be a tentpole character for the franchise in the way they need. The Fantastic 4, particularly without Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, AND Black Panther, are going to need to hold down the fort for a good portion of the MCU going forward. I want people who are invested in being in the franchise for a long time, like some of the others that have come our way in this series.

Also, there's nothing that strikes me that she's the right person for the part. There are hundreds of women, blonde or not (hair dye exists, but people forget about that when they're fan casting) who could do the part service just as well, if not better, and likely for a cheaper cost, too.

To me, you run the risk of having Lawrence decide she's over it, take lots of money to do the part, and everyone just looks at her as Jennifer Lawrence rather than Sue Storm.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Why did they need to make all these films follow the "home" name? Homecoming made sense. Far from Home...unnecessary. No Way Home, we'll see if it's a stretch or if it is worth it. But I'm confused as hell about this movie. How are they cramming in "Peter on the run" and the multiverse?

Bad Batch and Loki Release Dates

The Bad Batch is premiering on May the 4th, which is a perfect date for that.

Loki pops up June 11th. Very excited to see what they do with that show.

Anime Terminator Netflix Series

Does it have to be anime, though? I do think animated and/or a television series is a good direction to take this franchise (provided the plot isn't as dumb as T3 onward have been) but anime? I'm just not a fan of that media.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Zack Snyder's Justice League Official Trailer

In some ways, this feels like such a drastically different movie, which is insane. How could something as simple as setting up a Justice League film go so awry? Marvel did it before them, even, to show them the blueprint, and DC/Warner couldn't pull it off! It's nuts!

I'm very, very curious to see this. I'll binge the whole 4 hours like it's nothing (unless it's a terrible film, naturally). More than likely, what I'm going to do when this is out is watch the whole thing and then do a Reviewpoint and then possibly even a FanTracks to go along with it. Definitely very excited to see this "what if" scenario play out.

Transformers: Beast Alliance

Seems like they're finally going to the Beast Wars well for the Transformers movies. Frankly, I'm surprised it took this long.

Unpopular opinion, but I don't think Bumblebee was all that great or impressive. I think it's literally the same film as the first movie but with less charm and taking less risks, just repackaged with a female lead with the "Wouldn't it be cool if this was in the 80s!?!?!!" element (which I'm so tired of as just an arbitrary selling point rather than an actual purpose of storytelling).

They would probably be better off just setting it in modern times, rather than in the 90s.

Tim Burton - Wednesday Addams

Tim Burton's making a live-action spin-off series on Netflix about Wednesday Addams that reads to me as 50% great idea and 50% CW drivel meant to be nothing but a means to market to the goth Hot Topic "edgy girl" audience.

She'll be at school, dealing with psychic powers and mysteries and monsters. So basically Buffy, Sabrina and The Craft all wrapped in one.

Look. That might sound harsh, particularly because I could totally see myself pitching this exact same thing. This screams to me a pitch I would suggest if I were working as a producer or something. In fact, I'll have a whole segment on here, eventually, revolving around how I think you can make television shows based on characters in this sort of fashion.

I just feel like they're going to need to sell me really hard with that first trailer or else I'll end up looking at it the way I looked at the first episode of Ratched: "Wow. This blows and I'm not watching any more of it and you just sullied the good name of the original."

Nintendo Direct

I looked through the announcements of the Nintendo Direct and there wasn't a single damn thing I found interesting except for how Smash seems to LOOOOOOOOOOVE these animated sword-wielding characters. Why are there like 50 of them in the game and characters I've never heard of, but they still don't have Toad, Dixie Kong/Funky Kong/Cranky Kong, Dr. Robotnik/Knuckles/Tails, Zero from Mega Man X, Bomberman, some more Street Fighter characters (Chun Li? Guile?), etc?

I get that they would have issues with some characters that are on the PlayStation side of things. I wouldn't expect Crash Bandicoot or Spyro or whatever (but they'd naturally be main characters people would love to see). But I see no reason why there are all these anime characters and not something like the little dudes from Bubble Bobble.

Cruella Trailer

Maleficent has some pros and cons. This feels like another attempt at that. But it doesn't at all give me the dalmatians vibe like this sets that up. Maybe that's a good thing. I really don't know what to make of it, but I'll check it out.

Mortal Kombat Trailer

.....admittedly....this looks like they did the best possible job they could have. Right?

My only question is why there's no Johnny Cage. Maybe this Cole character actually uses that stage name or something and they're just keeping that reveal.
