Week in Geek #47: Gotham Series Finale and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, April 27, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Thoughts on Pet Sematary

Got to see the movie the other day and I enjoyed it. I'm not the biggest horror person out there and I hadn't seen the original, but this worked for me. I'd recommend it, overall.

Lucifer Season 4 Trailer

I'm digging it. I love this show and I'm really excited how they're going to be able to play around with more rated R type of material and a tighter story arc.

Gemini Man Trailer

I had not heard anything at all about this movie, and then saw the trailer during Endgame. Great marketing decision, as now that I'm aware it exists, I totally want to see it.

Gotham Series Finale

I stopped watching this show when Mad Hatter popped up, so there's your context of how I view this finale. Batman's my favorite character and this show was just too hokey and too all over the place and didn't do it for me as far as its execution and handling how the ages of characters worked and all.

But I had to watch the finale, of course. Here are my thoughts:

- I'm glad Commissioner Gordon has a mustache. They kind of ruined that, though.
- Barbara Kean is just a regular upstanding citizen I guess? That's weird.
- Riddler is full-on Frank Gorshin, I guess.
- Joker being a vegetable is a nice nod to The Dark Knight Returns.
- Lili Simmons is such perfect casting for Selina. Not only does she look like the older version of the younger actress, she's got the body frame, sex appeal, and everything else I'd want in a Catwoman.
- Penguin is totes Penguin. Awesome.
- That sushi looked good.
- Kind of a lame ending, especially with how Batman looked.

I feel like I dodged a bullet not watching the seasons I skipped out on. I can't help but to feel like if I had, I would have been disappointed with this finale.

BEAT ALL OF THEM. You deserve it. Biggest single day, opening day, weekend, domestic all time, worldwide all time, international all time, PG-13 all time....WIN. THEM. ALL.

Week in Geek #46: Suicide Squad John Cena, Dark Phoenix Trailer and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, April 20, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Details on PlayStation 5

Not a gamer, but this site does delve into gaming here and there (and was originally intended to be a source for gaming as one of the tent poles) so I figured I'd chime in from an outsider's perspective.

It will be backwards compatible with PS4 games, which is great. One of the things that sold me on buying a PS2 at the time was not just the blu-ray player aspect of it, but how it was able to play old PS1 games. I think every console should at least attempt to be able to play older games from previous consoles. Obviously, sometimes, that requires too much manipulation and the specs just don't line up and everything, but at least the previous generation should be a given. Ideally, PS5 would have some kind of system put in place for you to play everything without having to re-buy the games that you already own and such, but hey, at least this is a start and it's something.

It will support 8K resolutions. That's crazy to me, but awesome. Improvements in audio, too.

Obviously, it's improvements all around as far as hardware, meaning stuff like faster load times (relatively speaking...because, of course, if they have faster load times, they'll up the weight of everything that comes out for the system to counteract it and then, it'll catch up) as well as I'm sure all sorts of different things. It all seems good from what I'm hearing, so yay to everyone who will pick one of these up in 2020 or whenever.

Another Avengers: Endgame Trailer

Just go watch this. So many goosebumps.

The Gifted is Cancelled

Didn't even see one episode. I couldn't be bothered, and I'm a big X-Men fan. These random offshoots that were treated like the early 2000s era of comic book material just don't do it for me like they used to. They can do better.

John Cena for Suicide Squad?

Supposedly, he's in talks for a role in the film. What that role could be, I have no idea, even though this is exactly the type of crossover you'd think would be my bread and butter, between Fanboys Anonymous and Smark Out Moment.

Maybe he'll voice King Shark? Rumor has it, Peacemaker, which is a character I have literally no knowledge about.

Final Trailer for Dark Phoenix

Neat visuals, but yeah, I still have no faith in this movie and I'm preparing myself for a total dud.

Week in Geek #45: Rise of Skywalker Teaser, Disney + Details and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, April 13, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Addams Family Animated Film Teaser Trailer

Yeaaaaah.....nooo......I still wretchedly hate the animation style and this didn't make me laugh.

Mark Hamill's Idea for Original Trilogy Reunion

Apparently, Hamill pitched the idea that Leia would go to Starkiller Base after failing to telepathically contact Luke, and two Stormtroopers would approach her. One of them would turn to the other, blast him, pull off his helmet and it would be Luke, who would say "Hi sis, I'm here to rescue you."

I would have fucking loooooooooooooooooooooooved that!! And I agree with Hamill, the place would have erupted.

Hamill continues to prove that he had the right idea of what fans wanted more so than Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams and that team.

Iain Glen Cast as Bruce Wayne for Titans Season 2 + Jason Todd Upgraded to Series Regular

Very cool that we'll get to see not only more Jason Todd, but Bruce Wayne, too.

I'm not super familiar with Glen. I've seen him in Kick-Ass 2 and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (although that one, I can't remember at all). He looks like he's a little older than what I would picture Bruce being, so I hope they fix the hair situation at least. But he looks gruff, so that's good.

Finally Some Tangible News on Disney+ Details

It will be launched November 12, 2019. = No real thoughts.

It will cost $6.99 a month = BIG fan of that. That's how you create competition. You start off cheaper than Netflix, hook people into becoming comfortable, and then you raise the price in maybe 2-3 years to $9.99 and you'll have people seemingly forever. That's going to be half the price of Netflix and people are going to see that and say "Screw Netflix for a while."

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier = They had mentioned this before. I'm down. I really, really, really hope it doesn't mean Steve Rogers is dead. I don't want any of the Avengers to die, but if any of them have to, I'd rather it be Hulk, not Cap or Tony or Thor at least.

WandaVision = Not the biggest fan of the name, but I'd like a series of those two.

Marvel's What If? = Big, big, big fan of this idea. Apparently, the first episode will be "What If Peggy Carter was Captain America?" and that's neat.

Making Frozen 2 = A documentary on, well, making Frozen 2. Not my favorite movie, so I won't bother looking it up, but that's still neat for the people who are fans.

Forky Asks a Question = A short series based on the new Toy Story character. I already like Forky, so yay.

Lamp Life = A short film about Bo Peep. No idea if that's worth getting into, either, but sure.

The World According to Jeff Goldblum = Seriously? Awesome.

And so on and so forth like the Star Wars project The Mandalorian, a new season of Clone Wars, Monsters at Work, a Lady and the Tramp live-action film. Still not sure what "Marvel's 616" and "Marvel's Hero Project" are, but I'm up for more Marvel.

All 30 seasons of The Simpsons will be on Disney+, so if you want to watch some absolutely amazing television, watch the first 10 seasons and that's it.

What's great is that they still have room to grow, too. With all the FOX films and Miramax and everything, they can have so, so, so much.

Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker Teaser

First off, I can't judge the title until I know how this all plays out.

Second, the trailer did nothing for me. The message was "Rey is important and powerful." No shit.

Week in Geek #44: Joker Teaser, Black Widow Cast and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, April 6, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

DC Comics Digital Library Coming to DC Universe

The DC Universe streaming service will be adding the entire digital library of DC comics. This is a big boost to the service, and while it won't be available immediately and will be rolled out over time, it's still something that majorly upgrades the value of the monthly charge, even if you have to wait a year after the issue comes out for it to show up on DC Universe.

Avengers: Endgame Tickets / Trailer

I purchased 16 for myself and my friends, and I had to order them 5 minutes BEFORE they were supposed to go on sale just to be able to get them.

These tickets are being sold for hundreds of bucks because the systems on all the major theater outlets just got wrecked from people trying to buy their seats. My AMC account was acting as if the theater around me didn't exist and that I had no account because it just couldn't make sense of the mad rush.

Regarding the new trailer that was put out, my only response is "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!" I'm so pumped.

Joker Teaser Trailer

Everyone is going nuts over this, but I feel the same as I did before. I hate to be a grouch, but I think this is a mistake, the movie gives me no vibe that it should be about Joker from the DCU, and I feel more like this is a weird college kid's fan film that he thinks is a super deep "fresh take" or "thought experiment" than an actual movie about The Joker.

I hope I'm wrong, and maybe this will be a good movie if I ignore that it's supposed to be about a DC character but I just don't see what the fuss is all about.

David Harbour and Rachel Weisz for Black Widow

The roles they've supposedly signed up for have not been revealed, but it's nice to see that some big guns are coming out for this.

Why, with no hints whatsoever, do I get the feeling Weisz is playing the main villain, Florence Pugh is playing a somewhat "replacement Black Widow" of sorts type of villain (Yelena Belova?) and Harbour will play a mentor that gets killed or something. Just a thought.

Kumail Nanjiani Cast in The Eternals

Supposedly, he's one of the leads. I'll admit, I know nothing about The Eternals to speculate on any character he may play. However, he doesn't strike me as some kind of ripped superhero leading man Chris Evans/Hemsworth/Pratt type guy, so I'm curious and just have to shrug until I know more.

Suicide Squad Casting News

So now, Idris Elba isn't Deadshot, because Deadshot isn't in the movie at all. Now, that sucks.

Joel Kinnaman is returning as Rick Flag (meh), Viola Davis is back as Amanda Waller (yay) and you mean to tell me this is a reboot?

I'm assuming King Shark is just the replacement of Killer Croc.

6 FLICKS PICKS

Which films make the cut?

6. Fast Color — Super powers? Sure, why not?

5. Under the Silver Lake — I actually remember seeing a preview for this and thinking that it was something interesting, so let's go with that.

4. Pet Sematary — You really think I'm going to pick something like Teen Spirit?

3. Hellboy — I wasn't super amazingly wowed by the original two Hellboy movies, but hey, I watched them both and this is another superhero flick, so by default it takes precedence over the other picks.

2. Shazam! — While I think DC has so many problems going on and I've never loved the Captain Marvel Shazam character, this does look fun. I already have my ticket.

1. Avengers: Endgame — Dude. Duuuude. Duuuuuuuuude. This is my #1 most anticipated movie not only of this month, not only of this year, but in many ways of the past however many years it's been since the first Avengers. LET'S F'N GO!!!!

Justice League vs. the Fatal Five is the latest in the line of animated DC direct-to-video films. Is it worth the watch or it is something that should be skipped?

HD Justice League vs. the Fatal Five photos screen shots poster

Justice League vs. the Fatal Five
Directed by Sam Liu
Written by Alan Burnett, Eric Carrasco, James Krieg and Jim Shooter

STARRING:
Diane Guerrero (Jessica Cruz / Green Lantern), Elyes Gabel (Thomas Kallor / Starboy), Kevin Conroy (Bruce Wayne / Batman), George Newbern (Clark Kent / Kal-El / Superman), Susan Eisenberg (Diana Prince / Wonder Woman), Kevin Michael Richardson (Mr. Terrific), Daniela Bobadilla (Miss Martian), Tara Strong (Saturn Girl), Noel Fisher (Brainiac 5), Matthew Yang King (The Persuader), Tom Kenny (Bloodsport), Sumalee Montano (Emerald Empress), Philip Anthony-Rodriguez (Mano) and Peter Jessop (Tharok)

WARNING - SPOILERS BELOW

Here are some specific thoughts that ran through my mind during the course of the film as a stream of consciousness:

  • Very first immediate thought = this seems cheesy and I hope I'm wrong about that.
  • Oh hey, Justice League theme!
  • You don't mess with the Batmans.
  • Oh damn, this went from cheesy to dark now that some dude is flat out executing people gun to head.
  • I really wish there was a way to combine Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, Alan Scott, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz all into one single Green Lantern, that would be so much better than dividing the interesting characteristics.
  • Way to fuck up, Miss Martian. But good joke about Robin.
  • You'd think a seasoned Superman like this one would know better than to cause so much collateral damage by punching people through buildings like this.
  • Yoooooooooooooo Harvey Dent!!!!! I wasn't expecting that. Very cool.
  • I have no attachment or much knowledge of the Fatal Five, so these villains aren't doing anything for me yet and I'm 24 minutes in. Never been a fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes, either, for that matter.
  • I do like the animation on Starboy, though.
  • Mr. Terrific is actually getting a chance to do something? Sweet.
  • So let's just pretend like Jessica can out of nowhere learn how to use her ring to a great extent AND get over her paranoia just because "now's the time you have to deal with it" as if that really works. Lazy.
  • Goddamn can EVERYBODY fly?
  • With these bombs going off, now would be a good time for The Flash to be able to save everybody, right? Where's Wally?
  • You're just gonna kill Kilowog?! Poozers.
  • One of the tropes I'm not fond of with films like this is that they always have to nerf the rest of the heroes in order to highlight the one they're focusing on. In this case, Superman and Wonder Woman aren't able to do much because Jessica and Starboy have to save the day. I get it, in terms of the story, but it's predictable and flat.
  • Shouldn't Clark be supercharged after flying into the sun like that?
  • "I didn't say how I voted." - LOL Batman. Such a dick.
  • Well that was an abrupt ending.

Like most of these, if you look at this as a 3-episode block of Justice League Unlimited, then sure, it's fine. But if you look at it as an actual movie, it's underwhelming. As a fan of DC, I'm inclined to want to watch damn near everything, so if you're in the same boat as I am, go ahead and give it a shot for a quick watch some afternoon or something. In the grand scheme of things, though, if you're hoping for anything particularly engaging, this isn't going to suffice, as the villains are super bland, the story is pretty generic and there isn't much substance to it. It's just fine.

See It or Skip It = Skip It!

The New X-Men Logo

Ehh...it's okay, but it's lacking something. It seems more like a logo of something else trying to go with the whole modern minimalist thing than a dynamic superhero logo. They could have done better.

Thoughts on the movie "Us"

Totally forgot to add this into my breakdown for last week, but I saw Us the night it came out and I thought it was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it, and I'm not a horror fan. My girlfriend liked it a lot, too, so it has our stamps of approval and I recommend checking it out.

Zack Snyder Explains His Plans for Justice League and More

So at a Q&A, Snyder basically broke down a lot of his plans for what Batman v Superman was leading to, and now I'm even more convinced that this whole thing was doomed from the start. I reiterate that I like about 75% of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, and the 25% I don't like are things I don't just dislike, I vehemently HAAATE, and it seems like what would have happened in the future is some stuff I wouldn't have been a fan of.

For instance, the Anti-Life Equation would have been used to turn Superman evil, and the whole Knightmare sequence basically would have played out as Injustice in a sense (Lois being killed, Superman going evil) mixed with Avengers: Endgame of using The Flash to go back in time to stop it all from happening.

But it bugs me to hear things like how Snyder wasn't working much with David Ayer and wanted to keep his film as separate from Suicide Squad as possible. You can't do that in a shared universe, and that mentality is exactly why these films are failing.

Star Wars Leaked Movie Poster

So we see about as much of The Knights of Ren as we did before they just abandoned them, and some other characters we know nothing about. Neat? Pass.

Angelina Jolie Cast in The Eternals

I know damn near nothing about The Eternals, but I trust the MCU and if they were able to get a big name like Jolie to sign on, then by all means, go ahead.

Pennyworth Teaser

I still don't think this show should be made. Alfred's backstory is something best left for a one-shot comic, a special episode of a TV series (one episode) or just bits and pieces of information mentioned here and there throughout other stories, not something that can make a great television show on its own.

You know they're going to do nonsense like have Martha in a love triangle with Alfred and Thomas just to be all "ooooh I wonder how their relationship can sustain this" type drama and it's just ridiculous.

Charlie's Angels Moves Release Date

The reboot for Charlies Angels is shifting its release date to get out of the way of Terminator: Dark Fate.

Smart move. Even though the Terminator franchise is not the MCU in terms of public opinion and support right now, it doesn't serve any use to have two movies go head to head if they can get a better spot with less competition.

Jai Courtney Returning as Captain Boomerang in The Suicide Squad

Typical DC where this movie has the same title (minus "The") as the previous one, is considered a reboot, but has two returning cast members. It makes no sense.

But whatever. Courtney's version of Boomerang was super flawed and I hope they change him around and don't make him have a fetish for plush toys.

First Look at Brec Bassinger as Stargirl

Well...she looks like Stargirl. That's a good thing. I think it's a mistake to do a series based on her, but whatever, we'll just have to see how it pans out.

Week in Geek #42: Toy Story 4 and Stranger Things Trailers and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, March 23, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

The Batman May Be Set in the 1990s

Uuuuuuuuuggggh stop it with these stupid gimmicks!!! The X-Men films didn't need to be doing this whole decade-specific things, Captain Marvel certainly didn't need to be set in the 90s, Wonder Woman doesn't need to be in the 80s and The Batman certainly shouldn't be trying to aim for some 90s nostalgia. I love the 90s. I grew up in that decade. But let's keep the nostalgia stuff to things that actually dictate it and stop with the "wouldn't it be interesting if X superhero film was set in X decade? That's all we have to offer to this project" nonsense.

Toy Story 4 Trailer

I like Forky, but I'm really curious how they're mashing so many of these stories into one. It almost seems like they had 3 or 4 ideas that weren't good enough on their own and threw them into the same movie. I hope that isn't the case. I want this to be as good as the first three. What's up with Bo Peep being so different, too?

Bill and Ted Face the Music

The title totally works, and The synopsis sounds as silly as it should (Bill and Ted are now family men and have yet to write the song that will save the world, and the universe starts to goes to hell so they look for inspiration.)

Stranger Things Season 3 Trailer

Big fan of the first two seasons, so I'm definitely pumped for this. I'm really hoping we get some natural progression with all the characters from the past season, rather than skipping too much from season 2 with the time jump. They do all look so much older, it's crazy. Fuuuuck walking down a hallway and seeing that spider monster thing. And we can all agree Cary Elwes is going to be a villain and die, right?

Possible Avengers: Endgame Runtime

Rumor has it the movie is going to be 3 hours and 3 minutes. If so, awesome!!! I want them to take as much time as they can. Give me everything. Give me a 12 hour movie and I'll sit happily in the theater and geek out.

Week in Geek #41: Marvel What If Series, James Gunn GOTG Vol 3 and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, March 15, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

"What If" Series for Disney +

Supposedly, there will be an animated anthology series based on the "What If" line, discussing and showing events similar to the way the comics have worked.

This is AWESOME! This is exactly the type of content I would love to see them do. Having it be animated makes it significantly easier to create and cut down on the cost and do whatever the hell you want, and incorporate characters from all sorts of spectrums. You can even get the MCU folk to voice their characters if you want.

Major, major thumbs up on this.

Official Aladdin Trailer + Iago Casting

Well goddamn, this trailer did so much more for me than the previous one. I still don't like Jafar's voice, but I feel so much more confident about this movie now than I did before. No matter what, I was going to be seeing it opening night, but now I'm less worried. Awesome.

Also, Alan Tudyk is playing Iago. That's pretty neat.

Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trailer

Childhood me is having a stroke from two of my favorite series at the time crossing over. I'm really hoping they didn't make Dick Grayson younger than Barbara Gordon.

Avengers: Endgame Trailer

Uuuuuuuuugh I want to see this movie so bad. Literally everything that comes out, even the stuff that makes me nervous, just gets me thinking "aaah!!!" in excitement.

#WhateverItTakes

James Gunn WILL Direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

I'm happy about this. I maintain my previous arguments from before. If someone better were to come along, I'd be totally fine for it, but I feel like even though Vol 2 left me underwhelmed, nobody knows where this franchise is going better than Gunn, and he deserved to finish out his trilogy. Were his jokes in the past horrible? Absolutely. But they were attempts at jokes, not actual actions. Had he been convicted of something terrible, I would say cast him aside and never bring up his name again. But he tried to make jokes that didn't land well, YEARS ago, has apologized for them, and we need to be willing and able to forgive people for past indiscretions. Every single person on the planet has at one point in their life (or more) said or done something they regret because they know it was mean or cruel or gross or had questionable morality, and if you think you have a 100% perfect track record, you're fooling yourself. If you really think that nobody should ever be forgiven for anything and everybody has a permanent record that cannot be expunged no matter how light the crime, your opinion doesn't matter to me. Gunn had distasteful jokes. You don't have to laugh at them and you don't have to follow his Twitter account, and even then, it isn't like he continues to do that because this was years ago. Get over it.

Wonder Woman 1984 is a Standalone Non-Sequel

Further proof DC doesn't know what they're doing, they're referring to the Wonder Woman sequel as not a sequel, but more like a James Bond film in that it somehow continues the continuity without continuing the continuity. Mind you, all of the Daniel Craig films have followed the same path, so that negates that argument, but yes, the Bond films are more fluid and the reason behind that is because with each new actor, there's a bit of a reboot. But that isn't the case with this. It's still Gal Gadot and it's still Chris Pine.

They should just be honest and say the truth: "We really wanted to bring Chris Pine back and we felt like we thought it would be interesting to set the film in the 80s, because people love doing that shit nowadays. Just look at the X-Men and all their convoluted mess. But, then we realized that it wouldn't make any sense, so we're just saying 'fuck it' and hoping you all go along for the ride, because we have no actual plans for a shared universe since we fucked it all up a long time ago and can't commit to any sort of strategy that everyone can follow. We'd rather let each individual film be treated like you should totally see the other ones, but we can't be bothered to do our jobs and sort out how to fit everything together, so if there are plot holes and all, can you not point them out? Please? Aren't Chris Pine and Gal Gadot pretty?"

Week in Geek #40: Shortlist for Batman, Idris Elba Deadshot and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, March 9, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

First True Look at Sonic the Hedgehog

Why does this look so freaky? What's up with the eyes? Why do I feel like they're staring into my soul? I don't know what I was expecting, but I don't like this. Maybe this should have just been a more animated CGI type affair.

Shazam Trailer #2

I really hope this is good, cause the humor looks like it's on point. Please don't suck. I've liked everything I've seen so far though, so yaay.

Arrow Ending Next Season

There will be only 10 episodes next season, which will be the final season of the show. Good. The show had some good things going on that I'm very happy they did with the formula, but they quickly ran themselves into the grown with the Olicity stuff and not knowing how to balance their love for wanting the show to be Batman without being Batman. I've now actually gotten to the point where I don't feel like I need to watch the past few episodes of The Flash that I've missed and that was the only CW superhero entity that I was still staying on board with. All the rest lost me a while back.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Ending Next Season Too?

Clark Gregg referred to it as "the seventh and final season" and this makes sense. A shorter episode order, a time change, and the shift over to Disney+ means this show really didn't have much of a chance of having another season after this. Let's hope they go out with a bang and we can stop having things only tangentially be in the MCU.

Idris Elba for Deadshot?

Supposedly, Will Smith isn't coming back to be Deadshot for the next Suicide Squad movie, which both is and isn't a reboot and basically has the same title as the first one, which is beyond stupid, and they want to replace him with Idris Elba.

At this point, fuck it, just do whatever. I don't think Elba is the right man for the job to play Deadshot, but I also think Deadshot has to be in this movie for it to work, but I also think this movie shouldn't even be made, so I'm clearly not getting my way no matter what hahaha.

Short List for Next Batman?

Rumor has it the five actors in the running to be the next Batman are Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Alexander Ludwig and Jack Reynor.

Hoult is a major no to me. He doesn't have the face for it. Sorry pal. I like him as an actor, but this isn't the part for him. He was already Beast and I don't think he should be Batman after that. (I know, I know, Chris Evans and Ryan Reynolds have done two superheroes, but still)

Johnson is a similar case wherein I like him quite a bit, but now, I don't want Kick-Ass and Quicksilver to be Batman. I also think he lacks the psycho edge to him that I want my Batman to have, and I don't think I'd buy Johnson as Bruce Wayne, either. He's a little too goofy.

I know pretty much nothing about O'Connell and Ludwig, but neither look at all like Batman/Wayne to me. Pass.

Reynor is the best choice out of that list of five, but even he is nowhere near who I'd want to see be the next Batman, so I'm hoping this list isn't true.

Update: Apparently, this has been debunked, so yay.

Week in Geek #39: Pokemon Sword & Shield, Rami Malek Bond 25 Villain and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, March 2, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Detective Pikachu Trailer 2

This movie looks so weird and ridiculous and strange and unsettling and I somehow love it. Curious why they blew that Mewtwo is in it in the trailer. Also, I'm going to need a Togepi, Oddish, Stufful and some of the other adorable ones to be in it.

Pokemon Sword and Shield

Great names, particularly for a region based on the United Kingdom. I like that better than Crown and Scepter, which were rumored.

As far as the starter Pokemon go, I don't really love or hate any of them. I keep wanting to refer to Sobble as "Sadpole" and I'm really hoping Scorbunny (which is a super dumb and lazy name) isn't yet another Fire/Fighting as there have been far too many of those.

More info on Generation 8 to come will be on future Week in Geek editions, and possibly even a special if I ever finish my "how I'd redo Generation I" article that I planned on doing but it became way way way too big, with me redoing the entire Pokedex and such. Look forward to that at some point.

No Will Smith/Deadshot for Suicide Squad 2

So first off, why is this being called "The Suicide Squad"? Second, no Deadshot? That sucks. Deadshot was one of the few things they got right in that movie and he's the best person for being that level-headed leader of the team.

This just stinks more and more as the project and the whole DC film thing goes on. Nothing ever seems like good news.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Renewed for Season 7

Woooooooooooo! I love this show and I'm so glad it was given a second chance instead of dying out in the Fox purge.

Rami Malek for Bond 25 Villain

Depending on the character, I could be totally in for this. Rumors are that he's blind, which is an interesting choice, but goes along with Bond villains having some kind of physical deformity or something, right? Now that Malek won Best Actor, I'm sure his price has gone up.

Dark Phoenix Trailer

So Jean Grey kills Mystique? Out of all the people to kill, I'm glad it's her, and it makes sense. Still, this movie looks like shit and I really just wish it wouldn't have been made.

Ghostbusters Casting News

Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things and It has been cast, as well as Carrie Coon, who will play his single mother. Not too sure how to feel about that yet, but I like Wolfhard. The issue I have is that I want to make sure they address Oscar in this movie. I want him to be Peter and Dana's kid, and obviously, he'd be 30 now, not a teenager, so that's throwing me off.

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, March 1, 2019

Welcome to another edition of 6 Flicks Picks, wherein I list all of the upcoming films that are scheduled to be released in the United States for the month which is about to begin and break down which ones I'll be watching in theaters, which ones I'll wait to rent at home, and which ones I'll be skipping out on entirely. If I am missing some of the limited releases or the dates conflict in some fashion, please let me know in the comments below and any adjustments and corrections will be made!

6 FLICKS PICKS

Which films make the cut?

6. Finding Steve McQueen — I haven't seen the trailer, but the premise alone is more interesting already than most of the other options.

5. Greta — You see, kids, never help someone out.

4. Hotel Mumbai — Generally speaking, give me a drama about something like this over any of the typical "harrowing story of 18th century candlemakers in Belgium" thing.

3. Captive State — Yooooo I don't really know what to think of this yet, but it looks interesting as hell.

2. Us — Get Out was good. This looks trippy. I'm sold.

1. Captain Marvel — Duh. It's the MCU. This series literally takes priority over everything nowadays.

Week in Geek #38: Lightsaber Dueling, Captain Marvel's Rotten Tomatoes and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, February 23, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Netflix Cancels Jessica Jones and Punisher Series

Is literally anybody surprised about this whatsoever? As soon as Daredevil was cut, this was obvious.

Trolls Target Captain Marvel on Rotten Tomatoes

Waaaaah I have a problem with something someone said and I'm going to try to sabotage everything surrounding it because that'll make me feel better. Stupid. Look, I'm a white male and I'm someone who finds a lot of things nowadays to be annoying when it comes to pointing at me as being a problem when I've done nothing wrong, so I get when people are peeved about hearing more about that. However, what the fuck does that have to do with this movie? Brie Larson throwing out the idea that most of the press junkets feature white males is not an attack on white males, nor does it mean the movie she's in sucks.

Granted, if in the film, a major plot point is "all white males suck" or something, then sure, by all means, trash the movie. If the movie itself is terrible, it will get the Rotten Tomatoes score it deserves. But until that is the case, don't crap on a movie for a reason other than the movie's credentials and the process in making that movie—none of which seems to be the case when it comes to this.

France Makes Lightsaber Dueling a Sport

Hey, at least this isn't as bad as the people claiming Jedi as their religion, right? Lightsabers are cool and I'd rather watch this type of a duel than fencing.

Better Than Flashpoint

People are making buzz over Zack Snyder saying his plans for the DC films were "better" than Flashpoint. Why? Of course he would say that! Do you think he would say "Nah, Flashpoint's so much cooler than what I had in mind. My ideas would have sucked." or something like that? Come on now, people.

This very well could have been true, but it's just his perspective of the story he wanted to tell. he wanted to tell it because he liked it, so of course he's fond of his idea. It could have been awesome, or it could have been terrible. Someone out there thought Fant4stic was a good plan. Remember that.

Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart Guinness World Record

Jackman and Stewart have been awarded records for the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest portrayal of a live action superhero for, obviously, their roles as Wolverine and Professor X.

That's awesome! They both killed the parts over and over and over again and I doubt we're going to find anyone better.

So I watched Gotham...

...just to see the Ace Chemicals thing. I haven't seen the show in a few seasons, as it's just awful. Clearly, things haven't changed. However, I do think the idea of Joker trying to kill a father/mother figure to replace Joe Chill is a neat concept.
