CW's The Flash and iZombie Announced with Posters

Posted by Jeff Penner - Saturday, May 10, 2014

In the season of cancellations, it's time for some new series announcements! The Flash and iZombie have each been greenlit for a full first season. The posters and descriptions below give us a great idea of what to expect from these DC Comics properties.

DC Comics tv series The Flash

The Flash is a spinoff from CW's Arrow, a series whose ratings are questionable lately. The two series will run in conjunction and will most likely help support one another. The plan seems to be to build a "Marvel"-like universe, but there is serious doubt that the magic can be duplicated. Here is the official series announcement:
Based upon characters published by DC Comics. Through a freak accident, scientist Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) is given the power of super speed, which transforms him into the Fastest Man Alive.

The DC's speedy superhero series stars Grant Gustin (Glee), Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order), Danielle Panabaker (Shark), Rick Cosnett (The Vampire Diaries), Candice Patton (The Game), Tom Cavanagh (Ed), John Wesley Shipp (The Flash from the '90s), Carlos Valdes, guest star Patrick Sabongui, and recurring star Michelle Harrison (Emily Owens, MD).

Zombie tv series fall 2014 CW

I don't know a whole lot about iZombie, having never read the book, but the series was a popular one. In a decade where zombies rule in all mediums, is CW is hoping to duplicate the success of The Walking Dead? This series poster is sure to draw some attention. The lead character, Gwen, is seen eating what can only be inferred as a chopstick load of human brain. Though just discreet enough to pass as noodles or something, I don't know if the eating of human remains is in the advertising "good books." In any case, here are the official details on the show:
A med student-turned-zombie takes a job in the coroner's office to gain access to the brains she must reluctantly eat to maintain her humanity. But with each brain she consumes, she inherits the corpse's memories. With the help of her medical examiner boss and a police detective, she solves homicide cases in order to quiet the disturbing voices in her head. Based on the characters created by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred, and published by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint.

DC's Vertigo comic adaptation executive produced by Rob Thomas stars David Anders (Once Upon a Time), Robert Buckley (One Tree Hill), Rose McIver (Once Upon a Time), Malcolm Goodwin (Breakout Kings), Alexandra Krosney (Last Man Standing), Nora Dunn (Entourage), and Rahul Kohli.
It's nice to have some comic book properties on tv for our regular fix, will you be checking these shows out weekly or wait until they hit Netflix to binge watch in the future?

Regardless if you are a huge Hunger Games fan or not, we have all at some point wondered how long we would survive the Hunger Games if our name was chosen at the Reaping. While (thankfully) the games are not real and we don't have to fight for our lives in an arena already trying to kill us, we can experience the gist of it in an archery-styled tag game.

Extreme Sports Complex offers Archery Tag
Photo via Indoor Extreme Sports
Offered at the Indoor Extreme Sports complex in Long Island City, New York, Archery Tag has been a fast-growing hit. Adding the rules of dodgeball and replacing the balls with foam-tipped arrows, the 38,000-sqare-foot arena is full of inflated paintball bunkers as two teams go head-to-head. Players can also enjoy an "every man for themselves" match to see who is the last man—or woman—standing.

The complex also offers zombie laser tag, non exploding paintball, and black ops laser tag, integrating archery and laser tag into their weekly Zombiefest events.

While Indoor Extreme Sports is the only Archery Tag center in New York, the company plans on opening a center on Staten Island this summer with a larger outdoor field, The New York Times reported.

Archery has become widely popular with the success of Hunger Games, Avengers, Brave, and Arrow, featuring prominent characters wielding a quiver. This trending new arena match will definitely influence a few enthusiasts to run around shouting, "You have failed this city!" before unleashing a heap of flying arrows in every which direction. (Ok, I know I'm not the only one tempted to do so! Come on!)

If you are looking to brush up on your archery, Ozone Park's Pro Line Archery Lanes offers group and private lessons and open range for all ages for only $13.

Embrace your inner Katniss, Green Arrow, or Hawkeye. Archery Tag is available only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for just $20 per player. The complex is located on 7-11 Van Dam Street, Long Island City, Queens NY. Visit their website for more information.

How long do you think you would survive the Hunger Games? Are you willing to find out? (Lets go!) Let us know in the comment section below!

Same-sex marriage has been at the forefront of many heated debates in recent years, and members of the LGBT community have striven for equality in all forms—and it doesn't stop in the real world.

Miiquality urges for same-sex marriage and gay characters in Nintendo 3DS game

Nintendo recently announced that it will not allow same-sex marriage or the use of gay characters in its popular game, Tomodachi Life, after a glitch in the original Japanese version allowed users to re-gender characters to simulate same-sex relationships. The gaming company quickly patched the bug, sparking a wave of flames.

Several online campaigns urged the company to incorporate same-sex marriage  into the game. One such campaign is Miiquality; launched by Tye Marini, a gay 23-year-old Nintendo enthusiast from Arizona.

Marini, who is currently planning his own real-life gay marriage, told the Associated Press, "I want to be able to marry my real-life fiancé's Mii, but I can't do that." As a result, he's missed out on exclusive game content.

Nintendo made the statement that they "never intended to make any form of social commentary with the launch of Tomodachi Life."

The real-life simulation game, available on the Nintendo 3DS, lets Mii avatars act out normal situations—from going to theme parks to getting married—and allows for personalization through adding voices and personalities.

"The relationship options in the game represent a playful alternate world rather than a real-life simulation," Nintendo said in the statement. "We hope that all of our fans will see that Tomodachi Life was intended to be a whimsical and quirky game, and that we were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary."

The ability to be able to express one's identity in a safe and comfortable environment, whether among peers or behind a computer screen, has defined the gay-rights movement, and same-sex marriage is intertwined with that. Several other major companies have allowed users full expression of their self-identity, such as Facebook's gender-neutral profile options. A game that mimics the real world should allow just that.

Controversy over not allowing same-sex marriage in the game can be rooted from the localization of the game itself and the cultural divide it provides -- which is currently only available in Japan where gay marriage is not legal.

Several American-made roleplaying games, such as those in The Sims and The Elder Scrolls series, allow for same-sex marriage. Other games, such as The Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto IV, include gay characters.

If Nintendo allowed same-sex marriage in the game, even if it resulted in a backlash among anti-gay activists, that would only help the game gain more exposure and wouldn't prevent the company from making a sizable profit.

"We have heard and thoughtfully considered all the responses," Nintendo told the Associated Press in light of the #Miiquality campaign.

Nintendo released a formal apology on Friday, saying, "We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life." The company went on to say that while "it is not possible for us to change this game's design," they do pledge that if they create another installment in the series, they will "strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players."

Popular in Japan—having sold 1.83 million copies, according to the Associated Press—Tomodachi Life will be available in North America and Europe on June 6.

What is your take on same-sex marriage in video games? Let us know in the comment section below. Don't forget to tag #Miiquality on Twitter.

Spoilers are abhorrent acts by trolls, misfits, and sociopaths meant to ruin the joy of surprise and intrigue for adult nerds and innocent children alike. The one exception to this definition is comic book films (and other films that revolve around geekdom). Every detail of comic book films are fair game.

Comic book fans are difficult to please. There are several iterations of characters spanning decades of epic tales that no single story can cover. This fact doesn’t stop the criticism from fans that complain about the depiction of a given universe in a comic book film. Perhaps this is the reason that spoilers are considered acceptable for comic book films: by unearthing all of the imperfections, fans can influence studios to avoid the pitfalls of comic book film disasters such as R.I.P.D., Catwoman, Superman IV, Green Lantern, Fantastic Four, and many other atrocious films adaptations. A commendable goal that sometimes pay dividends.

ninja turtles movie michael bay spoilers torrent

Ninja Turtles, the film remake of the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, was widely rumored to feature the reptilian heroes as aliens rather than the original story of a radioactive mutagen creating their humanoid figures. Most pundits believed this direction would have been a horrible mistake which likely led to a change of heart by Bay and Paramount Pictures.

Thanks to the reaction of fans, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are mutants once again (although created by the Shredder; a complaint for a different day)!

Spoilers can serve the purpose of improving films but we must also consider the opposite effect - what if something really amazing was spoiled and the studio was forced to take a different direction because of the leak?

In the case of The Hateful Eight, Quentin Tarantino immediately halted all work on the film after a draft of the entire script was leaked to the public in January 2014. A live reading of the revised script by the intended cast was performed in April 2014 so perhaps Tarantino will continue the project, but this is clearly worst case scenario for a leak gone awry.

spider man amazing poster download torrent watch free online movie
Studios that produce comic book films have gone out of their way to avoid heavy spoilers by doing a lot of the heavy lifting themselves. For example, Columbia Pictures announced plans to produce Amazing Spider Man 3, Amazing Spider Man 4, a Sinister Six spin off, and a Venom-Carnage spin off before Amazing Spider Man 2 was released. These announcements serve the purpose of gauging reaction from key demographics, and minimizing the impact of leaks that are sure to come. This tends to shift the opinions of fans before films are available for public consumption which could drastically affect what stays in the film and what gets cut (*cough* Mary Jane *cough*). It’s a double edged sword that we should keep in mind going forward.

Perhaps most shocking is the fact that we no longer seem satisfied to simply experience comic book films. We squeeze out every detail possible before release just to see if what’s on screen matches what we imagine in our heads. What’s wrong with waiting to learn Star Wars: Episode VII will feature former Star Wars cast members near the release date in December 2015? The Star Wars hype train won’t be out of coal by that time, but it will take several more leaks to maintain momentum which will basically tell us the plot of the entire film before we see it in theaters.

I’m not saying it’s wrong but maybe we shouldn’t want spoilers to become the new normal. Part of what makes these movie experiences so great is the unexpected. Movies are sometimes going to be horrible no matter how loud our collective voices are, but there’s no point in spoiling the details of a great film for ourselves. Perhaps the pendulum has swung too far. Now the best way to enjoy a movie intended for fanboys is not to be a fanboy at all.

Is this an overreaction to the inevitable consequences of social media in the news cycle, or a rational response to knowing nearly every detail of a movie before walking in? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Lost Relics of the '90s: Camp Nowhere

Posted by The Dace Man

Watch Camp No Where online free!Hey there Dacitonians, The Dace Man is back to take you down nostalgia Route '90 and give you another Lost Relic from the golden age of entertainment! Last time I re-exposed you to the gem that is Europop by the band Eiffel 65, this time I'm going to jog your memory with a film from 1994. Directed by Jonathan Prince, written by Andrew Kurtzman and Eliot Wald, and starring Christopher Lloyd, Jonathan Jackson, and a very young Jessica Alba in her film debut, Camp Nowhere fed into the fantasy of every child who grew up at this time: a chance to get away for a summer and experience life's firsts, and overall have an epic adventure that would live on for years to tell.

The story follows a young kid nicknamed Mud as his parents decide to kick his butt out of the house for the summer and send him to computer camp. Mud would go on to find that his friends all suffered a similar fate—just to different camps. Enter Christopher Lloyd playing the character of a former drama teacher named Dennis who happens to owe money on a AMC Gremilin he bought. Insert classic '90s children blackmail, and the group is off to a camp to do whatever they want for the summer. After enjoying a summer of freedom, that dreaded Family Day that ultimately happens at all camps comes along, and then they have to spring into action to cover for what they've actually been doing. Sprinkle on some morality lessons because it's a Disney film and of course the send off of the Christopher Lloyd character who learned something, and you have your self a Lost Relic of the '90s!

I absolutely love this film because it allows me, a kid at the time who lived in his own world of creativity and ADD, to submerse myself into the idea of a summer of freedom where anything can happen. Even at the age of 25, I still have high hopes of that memorable summer that we can sing about in the fall just like John Travolta in Grease, but hey a crazy man can dream, right? I leave you with the trailer and most likely the urge to find this on Amazon or Netflix or something…you're welcome. Excuse the quality; after all, it was the '90s.

Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man 1 Review

Posted by Unknown - Thursday, May 8, 2014

The Ultimate Universe has survived another near-death experience, which means it is time for line-wide relaunches. Although I found All-New Ultimates 1 to be generally underwhelming, Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man 1 kick-starts the next chapter of Miles' life and includes two cameos that promise things have only just begun.

Cover for Brian Michael Bendis' Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man One

The issue starts off at a secret S.H.I.E.L.D holding facility that is being shut down due to S.H.I.E.L.D's inability to prevent the Galactus invasion. Closing S.H.I.E.L.D seems to be all the rage in Marvel Universes outside the main line. This particular prison, however, happens to be the home of a vegetable-state Norman Osborn, who is believed dead by the general public. As plans are made for his transfer, we jump to two factory workers who are attacked by a pair of new characters in matching Spider-Man derivative outfits reminiscent of the 616 Stacy Twin costumes. Following their successful heist, we finally find Miles who is trying to explain to his his girlfriend, Kate Bishop, how he knows his father left him without telling her that it was because he found out Miles is Spider-Man.

Miles debates telling Kate Bishop he's Spider-Man in Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man 1
The father subplot is a great example of the Ultimate Universe's potential. Major characters in the 616 and their close supporting cast can't often go through such a major change (see the death of Johnny Storm) in fear of making them unrecognizable to new readers. The Ultimate Universe, however, is one where a very real story can be told about a parent who disowns his/her child, and Bendis pulls it off in a way that avoids melodrama. It's a story that grounds Miles, further challenges him emotionally, and you can tell it counts. Elsewhere, Norman Osborn finally breaks free from his captors while his transport is stuck in traffic. We don't linger on the scene long, but you don't really need much to know this will be a game changer.

Later, Miles goes to Ganke's house to do homework and discuss telling Kate he's Spider-Man. Ganke immediately shoots down the idea, but Miles, much like Peter before him, doesn't want to lie to his girlfriend. The scene is reminiscent of Peter's early days but manages to capture the same endearing charm of a young person trying to be a hero without feeling derivative. Miles soon heads to meet Mary Jane, who supports his telling Kate but only if he feels she's really a relationship that will last. It's a tough situation to put a kid of barely 14 in after his father and mother, two people who should have been major players in his life, left or died. Things don't slow down from there, however, as Miles returns home to find Peter Parker standing in his house to finish the issue.

That's right, Peter Parker and The Green Goblin are both back in one issue. It's a lot to process, and although Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man 1 was a fun read, it left a lot to be considered. It validates my assumptions that it was Peter at the end of Ultimate Spider-Man 200, although the vernacular of the Peter we see here indicates he isn't the same Peter who occupied the series before Miles. Ultimate Spider-Man did have an excellent clone saga that could provide an extra Peter Parker, although my money is on an Ultimate Superior Spider-Man since that title had to end early to fulfill obligations to Sony in time for its movie. It shouldn't be ruled out, however, that those obligations may be enough to fully bring Peter back despite the generally universal praise of Miles.

What did you think of Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man 1? Are you happy to see Peter and Norman back, or does this simply scream editorial edict to you? Let us know in the comments section below and check back in next month for more Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man.

Week in Geek: May 7, 2014

Posted by Jeff Penner - Wednesday, May 7, 2014

Want to know what happened the past few days in nerd culture? WEEK IN GEEK is your quick fix to catch up with the rest of the Fanboys out there.

Nerdy current events in geek culture for this week

MOVIES

The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

My take: Sorry, I was a little late in seeing it, and short of wading through yet another review, I'll give the Cole's Notes version. For the most part, all other reviews are speaking true: the greatest praise of the film is that "it's better than the first one." I think the Spidey suit design is awesome, very basic, just like in the books. I loved seeing it in action. However, the plot has a billion holes that put almost everything in the series into question. For a quick example (not a huge spoiler), if everything centers around genetic manipulation for superpowers, why are all the potential villain's abilities purely through technological items? Does The Rhino have rhino DNA? I sincerely doubt it.

Star Wars: Storyboards.

My take: Any art geek worth his salt should be crapping his pants right now. The Star Wars Storyboards: the Original Trilogy is the release of 1,200 storyboards from those films. We all know the movies so well that going over these sketches will be like entering a wonderland of imagination that ultimately made those films a reality.

The Power Rangers Are Back.

My take: I'm not as big a fan as Chris but I understand this has made some certain people in the world giggle with joy. All I know is that I thought the pink ranger was cute when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure I was right. If this movie does well in the North American market, expect to see A) more Godzilla and B) an Ultraman Movie at least be talked about in Hollywood.

The Hobbit Title Announced.

My take: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies just makes me think "Man, I hope so." I would love to see some action from this series that has almost put me to sleep twice. Peter Jackson's reputation is sadly tarnished a little by expanding this story into three films. This could have easily been a 4-hour movie that made over a billion dollars and everyone would have been happy.

TELEVISION

Gotham TV Series Trailer.

My take: I'm not a fan of the idea of this show. Although I don't consider myself a devout "purist," I still see myself scoffing "What? How's that supposed to work?" every time something happens that throws canon out the window. I was originally quite interested in seeing the story of a young Jim Gordon, but I'm not so interested in seeing a brooding 10-year-old Bruce Wayne in the mix. Time will tell and, overall, the trailer was kind of good (aside from the overused, dramatic BRARRRRMMMMMMM noise).

Star Wars Rebels Trailer.

My take: As mentioned, the familiar ships, closed-quarter action, and fun just might be returning to Star Wars for the first time in a while. I completely skipped The Clone Wars but will definitely be checking out Rebels.

Star Wars' Working Title.

My take: Let's just remember "Blue Harvest," people. This is early, and the names might come flying at us like crazy until the official one is announced. The only reason for anything right now will be to get press, therefore, I shouldn't pander to them and should stop typing immediately!

COMIC BOOKS

Original Sin Takes Off.

My take: All murder mysteries will start slow and hopefully end with a bang. I'm personally putting a lot of expectations on this story because I gave up on Marvel events after the ill-conceived Fear Itself wasted months of my time and money. This story has great potential, bringing up dirt from everyone's past that is sure to put them all at odds. This could be an end point of Marvel's "Heroic Age."

Star-Lord / Rocket Raccoon & Groot Books.

My take: Marvel's confidence in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie is growing. To put a random movie like this out is risky enough, but to have Peter Quill have his own book for the first time in decades? Then give Rocket Raccoon and Groot a book that is, essentially, a sci-fi sitcom? I give them credit for going ahead and hope these books take off, I love the characters (and Scottie Young!).

DC Launches Future's End.

My take: I rag on DC a lot, and this series is a great example of why. After launching The New 52 just a few years ago under the guise of bringing in new readers, why would DC introduce a story that thrives on questions and confusion? The elements already thrown into this book only raise the eyebrows of longtime readers who see possible connections based on decades of familiarity with these characters. DC should listen to their fans, who are still unsure of exactly who's who now, and focus on telling modern stories without multiple universes and time travel. These stories serve only to introduce alternate versions of characters their readers don't even know. If they end up liking Superman of Earth-14 better than your own Earth-1 (our) Superman, you're in trouble.

GAMES

Titanfall a Huge Sales Giant.

My take: Physical copies only hit almost a million sold in just three weeks. Of an Xbox One game. This shows one of two things: A) Xbox One is really popular and is the next big thing or B) Xbox One owners have seriously been waiting for an actually good game to play. Even though Gears of War was a hit, and Xbox's key game, the console didn't rely on its sales. Xbox One is hit-or-miss in popularity and long-term game sales will ultimately tell us how well they're really doing.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Trailer.

My take: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare features Kevin Spacey not just as a voice actor, but also his likeness. That's a new twist for actors doing voice work. This also heightens Spacey's "cool" factor and will probably bump Netflix's House of Cards ratings up a little. It's all connected whether you think so or not, people. The game is likely going to be huge, with reality bending to ultimate levels as players get advanced abilities for the first time in this game series. I haven't bought a Call of Duty for years but will probably check this one out.

CELEBRITIES:

Bill Gates Set to Be a Trillionaire. My take: Based on investment and income projections, Bill is set to be the world's first trillionaire. Generally, I'd be so jealous as to never applaud anyone so wealthy. However, if you follow Bill Gates' money history, the guy gives so much money to so many worthy causes, his growing wealth only helps us all. There a lot of rich a-holes out there; Bill may not the coolest cat out there but he's one of the best.

Watch out for this segment each and every Wednesday. We'll see you next week!

Did we miss something? What are your thoughts on these topics? Leave us a comment below!

Not that it's anything new, but there's a lawsuit happening in "Rocktown" and it's coming from Glenn Danzig, the former Misfits frontman against the band's very own bassist, Jerry Only (real name Gerrard Caiafa).

Misfits Hot Topic Glenn Danzig Jerry Only Gerrard Caiafa lawsuit

Danzig's case is that a 1994 contract gave control of the Misfits brand and merchandising rights to members of the band equally. Since the 2000s, however, the Misfits trademark and logos were registered without the singer's knowledge by Caiafa, and deals were made more recently with Hot Topic, but Danzig hasn't seen a single cent.

Misfits Hot Topic Glenn Danzig Jerry Only Gerrard Caiafa lawsuit
Selling out never looked so good
Misfits Hot Topic Glenn Danzig Jerry Only Gerrard Caiafa lawsuit Fugly Boots
Nope. Not cool.

Danzig further attacks Caiafa by saying that the bassist conned merchants and other business partners into believing he (Caiafa) was the sole proprietor of the brand and even threatened them if they were to do business with Danzig. Due to this, Danzig has not been able to license anything Misfits related, causing him at least $75,000 in damages plus interests.

Whether Danzig scorns any particular item of merchandise or not remains to be seen, as well as where all the junk in Hot Topic will end up. Granted, some of it is of dubious taste, but I wouldn't mind my band's logo on a bikini top - or bottom. Preferably both.

Deadpool Movie News, Spoilers and Casting
Hey there Internet readers! Chris Dace back with some comic book news. Remember eons ago, more like 5 months 3 days, I wrote here on Fanboys Anonymous that my good pal Wade Wilson was tying the knot in April 2014? If you don't remember, check out the article Deadpool's Gettin' Married in Deadpool #27 Comic here on Fanboys Anonymous. Smile and look at the camera, even though this is a blog! Anywho cheap plugs and page hits aside, it's May and the wild, fourth-wall-breaking son of a gun is hitched! Be advised: There are spoilers if you're behind the times and can't read the issues when they debut!

Now just who was the lucky lass to tie down the hunk of really burnt and beaten meat known as Deadpool? Was it the fierce pilot with marvelous powers, Ms. Marver…err…I mean Captain Marvel? If it was Ms. Marvel, Wade would be married to a stretchy 16-year-old girl from New Jersey. Can you say hashtag creepy? Was it the green 'roided-up she beast, She-Hulk? How 'bout the promiscuous gotta-steal-Peter-Parker-from-Mary-Jane, Black Cat? The answer to all of them is no, even though they are extremely green with envy, one more literal than the others.

That bring us to the ultimate question: who did marry Wade, and was it all an elaborate scheme for more comic sales? The answer is yes, it was an elaborate scheme for more comic sales. The other answer to the Mrs. Wilson question is…drum roll…Shiklah, Queen of the Undead! Deadpool finally made it with Death. Well played Marvel, well played.

The Women of Marvel pictures and videos

On top of our favorite Merc with a Mouth tying the knot, Marvel also went and broke a Guinness World Record. With 232 Marvel characters gracing the cover of Deadpool #27, Guinness determined that of the 232, 224 were easily identifiable by the public, thus warranting the title of Most Comic Book Characters on the Cover of a Single Issue. Well congrats Wade and Marvel on these historic achievements! I'm gonna go get a chimichanga.

Team Rocket Giovanni Viridian City comic Pokémon noir TumblrArtist Ray Bruwelheide is the man behind the very interesting comic strip Viridian City, which depicts the world of Pokémon in stark contrast to what the series usually represents. Rather than appealing to the child in all of us, it is a much more adult, gritty, dark interpretation that evokes themes from crime dramas and horror/thriller mysteries with a noir feel.

When I came across this I thought it was particularly interesting, so I reached out to Ray to get some more information about where this idea came from.

Q: How did you originally get into Pokémon?

A: The same way everyone around my age did, I think. I was in 4th or 5th grade when it first came out, and I had a subscription to Nintendo Power at the time, so I was basically the perfect target demographic for it. Plus, all of my friends played it as well so it was inescapable.

Q: Everyone has a favorite Pokémon, so which one is yours?

A: I'm most familiar with generation 1, so the first that comes to mind is Kabutops, because an ancient crustacean horse-shoe crab Pokémon with blade arms is about as cool as it gets. I'm also partial to Blitzle and Crustle.

Q: What was your motivation for starting the Viridian City comic?

A: When I started it, I had a lot of free time and a well-paying job, so I wanted to make something that represented what I was thinking about at the time, and that ended up being a stylized, adult take on something that was really important to me as a kid.

Q: What did you draw from for inspiration? Was this interpretation based on anything in particular?

A: Well there's the obvious answer of "Pokémon and film noir," but more specifically I was looking at a lot of work by J.C. Leyendecker who was an amazing illustrator from that period (and later became Norman Rockwell's mentor) as well as plenty of Bioshock and the 2001 animated Metropolis.

Q: What are your thoughts on the reception it has received so far?

A: Mixed, honestly. I obviously love the positive reception it has received and all the great feedback, but the cynical part of me also realizes that on the Internet, it's easy to have formulaic success by combining two things people like or have nostalgia about. Most nerdy blogs these days are pretty full of posts like "My Little Game of Thrones Ponies" or "Breaking Bad Adventure Time" and it just seems so predictable.

Q: What are your plans for the future of Viridian City? Are you going to continue making up new strips?

A: Yeah, but slowly. The pages currently up were created in 3 batches with plenty of time between. I shot myself in the foot a bit by setting the level of detail so high. The pages look good in the end but require a lot of time.

Q: What other projects do you have under your name and coming up in the future that you want to let others know about?

A: I've got a game in the works that won't be seeing the light of day for a while, but new info on that and on future Viridian City stuff will show up first on my personal art tumblr

What do you think of Viridian City?

The argument about artificial intelligence (AI) has been heated since before Stephen King crapped Christine. Interestingly enough, intelligent minds say it has more validity than most people give credit for. AI could literally change the lives of every person on the planet, not only because they would have plenty more time to shape their figures into figures similar to the people on Wall-E, but because it would literally change everything we know and think about the world around us.

If robots can do all the work, the inevitability of socialism would undoubtedly drop. The wool over our eyes would be pulled back. No person would have the heap of excuses for not accomplishing anything any longer. After all, and some minds were intelligent enough to figure this out before, eventually no person would have to work, and there would be no reason to make them do so. That's socialism, unless we don't plan on feeding the people when we have no reason to refuse. Business? What business? I have no need for money, because I'm taken care of by robots of human invention. Socialism. Sorry to break it to you, but it's not as evil as we all thought, especially when everyone is cared for like a rich baby.

Stephen Hawking - The Man That Took On Einstein - A.I.
The space race would be the joke of the last era if we had AI. It would be the Earth space project, and we would be star trekking in no time. After all, Jesus said, "It is less likely for a rich man to make it to Heaven, than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle." The problem? What would this AI think about us? Are we worth keeping around? What sort of conscience would it have?

Perhaps it's time for a rewind, because I sense you are laughing. The Independent ran an op-ed Sunday containing some of the concerns of famed physicist Stephen Hawking, one of few brave enough to take on Einstein. Stephen Hawking's concerns over the future advancements in AI probably came as a surprise to most, as the common consensus is that nonliving material cannot manifest a soul and cannot thereby be animated in the sense that a living being can be. "Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history," Hawking wrote. "Unfortunately, it might also be the last."

Hawking outlined the progress in robotics to date—robotically-driven vehicles, digital personal assistance, all the information we could ever need at our fingertips almost anywhere. People don't even need to pick up maps anymore. We are currently in the beginning stages of building our own science fiction setting. Hawking's issue? Is the Earth rapidly becoming the sort of sci-fi blockbuster we want to take part in, i.e., Human victims similar to those in The Matrix?

Will we soon be living sci-fi? In other words, will sci-fi be known as science fact? There is no shortage of financing for AI start-ups. The ever-crushing titan that is Google is at the helm and with such competition, other companies will not be short with ideas to squeeze in next to the beast. It's a fact that has Hawking saying,"All of us should ask ourselves what we can do now to improve the chances of reaping the benefits and avoiding the risks."

Regarding the common consensus of people concerning robots and conscience: coursing through the human body is a combination of earthly metals, soil nutrients, and a powerhouse that turns mass into fuel. It's no less likely for a man-made earthly contraption to be intelligent and capable of independent thinking than for an environmentally manufactured biological contraption. Perhaps we should be asking this: is Hawking correct? We all know it is in our nature to rush to the next level. We are still the tots outside who pick up something icky and stick it in our mouths. Too bad our mommies aren't trying to stop us. Tell me what you think downstairs.

This November, Pokémon fans are going back to Hoenn with Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. The Pokémon Company marks these releases as a fresh take on the story, told in Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire, that will give fans a new world to explore.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire official covers nintendo

The originals were released in 2002 in Japan and 2003 everywhere else and quickly climbed the charts to become the top game of the year. The titles still hold the record for number-one Game Boy Advance game of all time.

pokemon hoenn region ruby sapphire nintendo game boyIn the originals, the story follows the basic Pokémon blueprint. You take on the role of a trainer and work your way up through gyms to battle and beat the Pokémon Champion. It was the first title of the series to include the player’s dad, making him the gym leader in a nearby town. A subplot was also present consisting of either Team Magma or Team Aqua, two criminal organizations that wish to use legendary Pokémon to alter the climate.

In recent years, Pokémon has stepped up their game. Last year’s release of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y broke records as the fastest selling 3DS games. The games included customization, mini-games, and many other features fans had patiently been waiting for. Which brings up the question: What new features will be present in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire?

The last remakes released by Nintendo were Heart Gold and Soul Silver that came out in 2010 for the DS. The project showed that the company was capable of staying true to the originals while bringing them into the current generation of gaming that could appeal to fans new and old, leaving Ruby and Sapphire fanatics feeling hopeful.

Mighty Morphin Power Ranger Movie Spoilers and Casting Rumors
Hey, hey, hey Dacetacular nation! Chris Dace back with some breaking news revolving around Saban Brands and Lionsgate Films. If you're like me, 20 years ago you were rolling around the house, battling the imaginary Putties and protecting Angel Grove from the evil Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd. Well, now that I'm 25 years old, I still do the same thing—but now Lionsgate and Saban have agreed to bring the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to the big screen one more time! In what is being hinted at as a reenvisioning of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers we were first introduced to in the early 1990s, Lionsgate has taken on this fanboy mission to give us the product we deserve. The CEO of Lionsgate films was quoted as follows about the partnership with Sabin.
"We're thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximize the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognized franchise. The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever. We have the ideal partner and the perfect brand with which to create a motion picture event that will resonate with moviegoers around the world for years to come."
Sabin would go on to release his own comment about bringing the beloved franchise to the studio.
"Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level. They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we're confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own."
I for one am super stoked at this huge announcement today! Its been nearly 20 some years since my mommy took me to the theater to see the Rangers take on Ivan Ooze, and I look forward to sitting in a theater in the next couple years as a grown-ass adult cheering on the Rangers!

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Ancient Fear Title Rumor Thoughts

Posted by Anthony Mango - Tuesday, May 6, 2014

Now that we know several of the cast members of the upcoming Star Wars film, the next piece of the puzzle had to be either the title or the names of the characters that those actors would portray. For people like myself who are waiting on some kind of confirmation that Domhnall Gleeson is Ben Skywalker, we'll have to wait a little bit longer.

However, there may be some news about the former of those two mysteries. Ain't It Cool News is reporting that the working title for Episode 7 is THE ANCIENT FEAR and that it is referring to Max Von Sydow's character, who is a villain "who makes Pazuzu look like a pussy."

There are several things of interest about this news, if it indeed turns out to be true.

First, it would confirm what pretty much everyone speculated about from the beginning—that Max Von Sydow is playing an important villain. Just looking at the guy would make that obvious, but then again, you can never be sure about these things.

Second, it would follow in the footsteps of the regular formatting for titles in the franchise. The third film's titles have reflected each other, with Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi. The second films refer to an action of war from a faction. What does the empire do? They strike back. Who attacks? The clones do. The first film has a recognizable pattern as well, with three words that speak of a particular person. A New Hope and The Phantom Menace and The Ancient Fear of Max Von Sydow. Makes sense, right?

That being said, I hope this is not the title and we get something else. I don't like the idea that Max Von Sydow is a villain who has existed beforehand, as that kind of undercuts the importance of Darth Sidious being the end-all-be-all of evil. Then again, maybe he's not supposed to be. I'm open to being convinced otherwise. On top of this, I feel like the title is too bland. It reminds me of the laundry list of title suggestions that I've been reading for years from fans that are really weak. There may be better ones out there, but I've been throwing a particular name out for a while that I like: "A Rising Force." To me, The Ancient Fear plays itself to the common folk too much and dumbs itself down just to make it easier for people to know what's going on.

But hey, at least it's no "Divisions of the Quagmire"...

What do you think of this rumored title?

Watch Gotham TV Series Trailers #1 & #2 First Look

Posted by Anonymous - Monday, May 5, 2014

Gotham logo for Batman TV Show on FoxFox has released the first official trailer for the upcoming Gotham television show—a prequel series building up to the Batman mythos that we all know and love.

It will be centered around rookie cop James Gordon (Ben Mackenzie) long before he is able to rise to the rank of commissioner.

Other cast members include Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, Jada Pinkett Smith as underworld criminal boss Fish Mooney, David Mazouz as a young Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin, Camren Bicondova as the future Catwoman Selina Kyle, Eric Richards as Barbara Kean, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, and Zabryna Guevara as Captain Essen.

There have been rumors of an older Bruce Wayne being cast, so does that mean we will eventually see The Batman himself on this show?

Check out the trailer below and tell us what you think about it in the comments!

Update: An extended second trailer has been uploaded below:

Indie supporters: I recently took up my most difficult reading task to date. There have been many a book to touch these hands—some I liked, and some I did not. A recent read left me feeling clueless some of the time, though, and I'm not certain it was warranted. In fact, I'm still not exactly certain I followed the book's narrative all that well.

Tales From the Emerald Wind: The Green Shadows Trilogy by Saifulnizam Shukor was a long and arduous excavation for me. Actually, what I gathered from it was a unique combination of two themes: a fantasy religion about prophecies, gatekeepers, and bards mixed with a hard science fiction opera. From what I was able to gather, as the forces of evil have nurtured a prophecy and built themselves to rise against all that is positive in the world and subscribe to annihilation, two young boys are recruited to be the new heroes of all civilizations in the deep of space. It all takes place in a futuristic and technologically advanced universe, save for the planet the boys are from. The closest comparison I can make to explain the religious science fiction aspect is The Chronicles of Riddick, but a backwards version.

Science Fiction Art by Saifulnizam Shukor

Free Inner Pages Art Sneak PeekIt took me a good two weeks to gain a pretty decent understanding of the story. It's sad for me because I suspect if I were able to read it in its original language—author is Malaysian—it might have been much easier. Editing, however, was its main downfall. I've seen better dialogue in books, I've also seen much worse in the way of stories. The part that tears me apart with this one is that the story, as I understood it overall, was quite good. It had definite potential.

Free Tales From the Emerald Wind Art PrintsAs a personal note to the author, I'd like to point out that I'm currently a failing author myself. I submitted my book about two years ago to a publisher when I couldn't afford editing and they wrote me a nasty letter back saying they would never waste their time reading a book that contained a typo in the first chapter. I had read and reread my own book about six times. When you've read something that many times, the words run together and the mistakes get harder to find. I think it's a shame the way companies handle hopeful authors. I read Saifulnizam's book to the best of my ability and I'm sorry to give such a negative review because, I suspect, if I had an easier time with it, I would have given a better review. I loved the story for what it was. Don't give up writing. Tell me what you think downstairs.
