Week in Geek #41: Marvel What If Series, James Gunn GOTG Vol 3 and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, March 15, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

"What If" Series for Disney +

Supposedly, there will be an animated anthology series based on the "What If" line, discussing and showing events similar to the way the comics have worked.

This is AWESOME! This is exactly the type of content I would love to see them do. Having it be animated makes it significantly easier to create and cut down on the cost and do whatever the hell you want, and incorporate characters from all sorts of spectrums. You can even get the MCU folk to voice their characters if you want.

Major, major thumbs up on this.

Official Aladdin Trailer + Iago Casting

Well goddamn, this trailer did so much more for me than the previous one. I still don't like Jafar's voice, but I feel so much more confident about this movie now than I did before. No matter what, I was going to be seeing it opening night, but now I'm less worried. Awesome.

Also, Alan Tudyk is playing Iago. That's pretty neat.

Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trailer

Childhood me is having a stroke from two of my favorite series at the time crossing over. I'm really hoping they didn't make Dick Grayson younger than Barbara Gordon.

Avengers: Endgame Trailer

Uuuuuuuuugh I want to see this movie so bad. Literally everything that comes out, even the stuff that makes me nervous, just gets me thinking "aaah!!!" in excitement.

#WhateverItTakes

James Gunn WILL Direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

I'm happy about this. I maintain my previous arguments from before. If someone better were to come along, I'd be totally fine for it, but I feel like even though Vol 2 left me underwhelmed, nobody knows where this franchise is going better than Gunn, and he deserved to finish out his trilogy. Were his jokes in the past horrible? Absolutely. But they were attempts at jokes, not actual actions. Had he been convicted of something terrible, I would say cast him aside and never bring up his name again. But he tried to make jokes that didn't land well, YEARS ago, has apologized for them, and we need to be willing and able to forgive people for past indiscretions. Every single person on the planet has at one point in their life (or more) said or done something they regret because they know it was mean or cruel or gross or had questionable morality, and if you think you have a 100% perfect track record, you're fooling yourself. If you really think that nobody should ever be forgiven for anything and everybody has a permanent record that cannot be expunged no matter how light the crime, your opinion doesn't matter to me. Gunn had distasteful jokes. You don't have to laugh at them and you don't have to follow his Twitter account, and even then, it isn't like he continues to do that because this was years ago. Get over it.

Wonder Woman 1984 is a Standalone Non-Sequel

Further proof DC doesn't know what they're doing, they're referring to the Wonder Woman sequel as not a sequel, but more like a James Bond film in that it somehow continues the continuity without continuing the continuity. Mind you, all of the Daniel Craig films have followed the same path, so that negates that argument, but yes, the Bond films are more fluid and the reason behind that is because with each new actor, there's a bit of a reboot. But that isn't the case with this. It's still Gal Gadot and it's still Chris Pine.

They should just be honest and say the truth: "We really wanted to bring Chris Pine back and we felt like we thought it would be interesting to set the film in the 80s, because people love doing that shit nowadays. Just look at the X-Men and all their convoluted mess. But, then we realized that it wouldn't make any sense, so we're just saying 'fuck it' and hoping you all go along for the ride, because we have no actual plans for a shared universe since we fucked it all up a long time ago and can't commit to any sort of strategy that everyone can follow. We'd rather let each individual film be treated like you should totally see the other ones, but we can't be bothered to do our jobs and sort out how to fit everything together, so if there are plot holes and all, can you not point them out? Please? Aren't Chris Pine and Gal Gadot pretty?"

Week in Geek #40: Shortlist for Batman, Idris Elba Deadshot and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, March 9, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

First True Look at Sonic the Hedgehog

Why does this look so freaky? What's up with the eyes? Why do I feel like they're staring into my soul? I don't know what I was expecting, but I don't like this. Maybe this should have just been a more animated CGI type affair.

Shazam Trailer #2

I really hope this is good, cause the humor looks like it's on point. Please don't suck. I've liked everything I've seen so far though, so yaay.

Arrow Ending Next Season

There will be only 10 episodes next season, which will be the final season of the show. Good. The show had some good things going on that I'm very happy they did with the formula, but they quickly ran themselves into the grown with the Olicity stuff and not knowing how to balance their love for wanting the show to be Batman without being Batman. I've now actually gotten to the point where I don't feel like I need to watch the past few episodes of The Flash that I've missed and that was the only CW superhero entity that I was still staying on board with. All the rest lost me a while back.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Ending Next Season Too?

Clark Gregg referred to it as "the seventh and final season" and this makes sense. A shorter episode order, a time change, and the shift over to Disney+ means this show really didn't have much of a chance of having another season after this. Let's hope they go out with a bang and we can stop having things only tangentially be in the MCU.

Idris Elba for Deadshot?

Supposedly, Will Smith isn't coming back to be Deadshot for the next Suicide Squad movie, which both is and isn't a reboot and basically has the same title as the first one, which is beyond stupid, and they want to replace him with Idris Elba.

At this point, fuck it, just do whatever. I don't think Elba is the right man for the job to play Deadshot, but I also think Deadshot has to be in this movie for it to work, but I also think this movie shouldn't even be made, so I'm clearly not getting my way no matter what hahaha.

Short List for Next Batman?

Rumor has it the five actors in the running to be the next Batman are Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Alexander Ludwig and Jack Reynor.

Hoult is a major no to me. He doesn't have the face for it. Sorry pal. I like him as an actor, but this isn't the part for him. He was already Beast and I don't think he should be Batman after that. (I know, I know, Chris Evans and Ryan Reynolds have done two superheroes, but still)

Johnson is a similar case wherein I like him quite a bit, but now, I don't want Kick-Ass and Quicksilver to be Batman. I also think he lacks the psycho edge to him that I want my Batman to have, and I don't think I'd buy Johnson as Bruce Wayne, either. He's a little too goofy.

I know pretty much nothing about O'Connell and Ludwig, but neither look at all like Batman/Wayne to me. Pass.

Reynor is the best choice out of that list of five, but even he is nowhere near who I'd want to see be the next Batman, so I'm hoping this list isn't true.

Update: Apparently, this has been debunked, so yay.

Week in Geek #39: Pokemon Sword & Shield, Rami Malek Bond 25 Villain and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, March 2, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Detective Pikachu Trailer 2

This movie looks so weird and ridiculous and strange and unsettling and I somehow love it. Curious why they blew that Mewtwo is in it in the trailer. Also, I'm going to need a Togepi, Oddish, Stufful and some of the other adorable ones to be in it.

Pokemon Sword and Shield

Great names, particularly for a region based on the United Kingdom. I like that better than Crown and Scepter, which were rumored.

As far as the starter Pokemon go, I don't really love or hate any of them. I keep wanting to refer to Sobble as "Sadpole" and I'm really hoping Scorbunny (which is a super dumb and lazy name) isn't yet another Fire/Fighting as there have been far too many of those.

More info on Generation 8 to come will be on future Week in Geek editions, and possibly even a special if I ever finish my "how I'd redo Generation I" article that I planned on doing but it became way way way too big, with me redoing the entire Pokedex and such. Look forward to that at some point.

No Will Smith/Deadshot for Suicide Squad 2

So first off, why is this being called "The Suicide Squad"? Second, no Deadshot? That sucks. Deadshot was one of the few things they got right in that movie and he's the best person for being that level-headed leader of the team.

This just stinks more and more as the project and the whole DC film thing goes on. Nothing ever seems like good news.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Renewed for Season 7

Woooooooooooo! I love this show and I'm so glad it was given a second chance instead of dying out in the Fox purge.

Rami Malek for Bond 25 Villain

Depending on the character, I could be totally in for this. Rumors are that he's blind, which is an interesting choice, but goes along with Bond villains having some kind of physical deformity or something, right? Now that Malek won Best Actor, I'm sure his price has gone up.

Dark Phoenix Trailer

So Jean Grey kills Mystique? Out of all the people to kill, I'm glad it's her, and it makes sense. Still, this movie looks like shit and I really just wish it wouldn't have been made.

Ghostbusters Casting News

Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things and It has been cast, as well as Carrie Coon, who will play his single mother. Not too sure how to feel about that yet, but I like Wolfhard. The issue I have is that I want to make sure they address Oscar in this movie. I want him to be Peter and Dana's kid, and obviously, he'd be 30 now, not a teenager, so that's throwing me off.

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, March 1, 2019

Welcome to another edition of 6 Flicks Picks, wherein I list all of the upcoming films that are scheduled to be released in the United States for the month which is about to begin and break down which ones I'll be watching in theaters, which ones I'll wait to rent at home, and which ones I'll be skipping out on entirely. If I am missing some of the limited releases or the dates conflict in some fashion, please let me know in the comments below and any adjustments and corrections will be made!

6 FLICKS PICKS

Which films make the cut?

6. Finding Steve McQueen — I haven't seen the trailer, but the premise alone is more interesting already than most of the other options.

5. Greta — You see, kids, never help someone out.

4. Hotel Mumbai — Generally speaking, give me a drama about something like this over any of the typical "harrowing story of 18th century candlemakers in Belgium" thing.

3. Captive State — Yooooo I don't really know what to think of this yet, but it looks interesting as hell.

2. Us — Get Out was good. This looks trippy. I'm sold.

1. Captain Marvel — Duh. It's the MCU. This series literally takes priority over everything nowadays.

Week in Geek #38: Lightsaber Dueling, Captain Marvel's Rotten Tomatoes and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, February 23, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Netflix Cancels Jessica Jones and Punisher Series

Is literally anybody surprised about this whatsoever? As soon as Daredevil was cut, this was obvious.

Trolls Target Captain Marvel on Rotten Tomatoes

Waaaaah I have a problem with something someone said and I'm going to try to sabotage everything surrounding it because that'll make me feel better. Stupid. Look, I'm a white male and I'm someone who finds a lot of things nowadays to be annoying when it comes to pointing at me as being a problem when I've done nothing wrong, so I get when people are peeved about hearing more about that. However, what the fuck does that have to do with this movie? Brie Larson throwing out the idea that most of the press junkets feature white males is not an attack on white males, nor does it mean the movie she's in sucks.

Granted, if in the film, a major plot point is "all white males suck" or something, then sure, by all means, trash the movie. If the movie itself is terrible, it will get the Rotten Tomatoes score it deserves. But until that is the case, don't crap on a movie for a reason other than the movie's credentials and the process in making that movie—none of which seems to be the case when it comes to this.

France Makes Lightsaber Dueling a Sport

Hey, at least this isn't as bad as the people claiming Jedi as their religion, right? Lightsabers are cool and I'd rather watch this type of a duel than fencing.

Better Than Flashpoint

People are making buzz over Zack Snyder saying his plans for the DC films were "better" than Flashpoint. Why? Of course he would say that! Do you think he would say "Nah, Flashpoint's so much cooler than what I had in mind. My ideas would have sucked." or something like that? Come on now, people.

This very well could have been true, but it's just his perspective of the story he wanted to tell. he wanted to tell it because he liked it, so of course he's fond of his idea. It could have been awesome, or it could have been terrible. Someone out there thought Fant4stic was a good plan. Remember that.

Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart Guinness World Record

Jackman and Stewart have been awarded records for the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest portrayal of a live action superhero for, obviously, their roles as Wolverine and Professor X.

That's awesome! They both killed the parts over and over and over again and I doubt we're going to find anyone better.

So I watched Gotham...

...just to see the Ace Chemicals thing. I haven't seen the show in a few seasons, as it's just awful. Clearly, things haven't changed. However, I do think the idea of Joker trying to kill a father/mother figure to replace Joe Chill is a neat concept.

Mehh....Aladdin looks like Aladdin. Jasmine looks like Jasmine. They've got the monkey and the tiger. The magic carpet is there. WTF is up with Jafar sounding like his balls haven't dropped yet? Genie is just "blue Will Smith" so that's a bit weird and will take some time to adjust to. Really, I'm seeing this movie no matter what, but this didn't wow me as much as I was hoping it would.

Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Animated Movie in the Works

This is crazy, but since I'm a fan of both, I'm totally up for checking it out. Darren Criss is Raphael? He strikes me more as a Donatello. Very curious. Very confused. Very intrigued. Cool.

Frozen 2 Trailer

Music. Scenery. Gusto. I totally checked out of this. Give me an indication of the story itself and not just some "isn't Frozen great?" type thing. I thought Frozen was just okay.

The Reach Spinoff Movie

I forgot to mention this last week, but a report is going around that there will be a spinoff film from Aquaman that will be a horror movie revolving around The Reach. Horrible idea. They're just monsters that look like humanoid piranhas. It wouldn't serve any function, really, because the cast of characters to follow would be pointless. DC needs to stop having people make pitches that lead nowhere.

Academy Awards Cutting Categories from Live Broadcast

Apparently, Film Editing, Cinematography, Live Action Short and Makeup and Hairstyling won't be airing on the TV broadcast for the Oscars, because they want to cut down on the time. Here's a thought: how about you cut down on all the frivolous bullshit instead? How about doing my suggestion about making it a weekend affair?

DC Super Hero Girls Trailer

...not for me.

Week in Geek #36: Terminator Dark Fate and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Sunday, February 10, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Justice League vs. The Fatal Five Trailer

Loving the animation, I absolutely love the voice actors of course (Kevin Conroy and Tim Daly / George Newbern are my ideal Batman and Superman in my mind) and although this trailer doesn't give me much to go on, I'm still excited. Is this technically in continuity with the end of Justice League Unlimited??

Star Wars: Episode IX - Balance of the Force

Supposedly, that's the title. If so, I like it. I used that in a fan fiction thing I had written before. Hopefully, it's also a nod to how they need to find the right balance to fix this franchise that they've greatly hindered...

Also, this rumor that there is a threat from outside the universe is what 7-8-9 should have been, not this random shit about setting up that the heroes from the original trilogy are failures and it's up to Rey and only Rey to save the galaxy. This should have been that over the course of the 30 years from Return of the Jedi, Luke has spent that time learning more and trying to build up a new class of Jedi, while the Republic is still forming, and they've been dealing with the political spectrum and cleaning up the galaxy, which left them vulnerable to attack from the outside now that there isn't a massive empire to combat them.

Terminator: Dark Fate

That's the working title, and I sincerely hope they change it. That's just not great. Depending on what the story is (which I would really hope is "John Connor struggles with the start of the war" to a certain extent, cause it seems like they're ignoring John so far and that's making me nervous) I'd like a title to be more poignant and not so much the "edgy cool marketing" type. Maybe give me something like Terminator: No Fate even.

Week in Geek #35: No More Batfleck, Birds of Prey Teaser and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, February 2, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Black Panther Returning to Theaters for Black History Month

From February 1-7, Black Panther is going to come back to 250 AMC theaters for seemingly two reasons: Black History Month and to give it an extra boost for the Academy Awards.

VERY smart move. Also, tickets are going to be free? That's a great way to get people to really give your movie lots of positive buzz. Kudos, team. Great movie, too, as I've said time and time again.

Black Panther Wins at Screen Actors Guild Awards

The film took the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award and Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture. Nice!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 6 Teaser

So....huh? I'm assuming this is an alternate dimension type deal or something, as they can't do time travel again without it just being stupid.

To be honest, I wish they would go back to the previous formula of just having more scaled down things to deal with. Season 1 and parts of season 2 were my favorites overall.

Birds of Prey Teaser

This did absolutely nothing to quell my fears about this movie. In fact, it really proved that I have every reason to be fearful, because it's stupid. It's a meaningless set of images that show a Black Mask without a black mask, a drugged out looking Black Canary, a Cassie Cain that doesn't strike me at all as that character in the slightest bit, and it's trying to be cutesy.

Zombieland: Double Tap

Not sure I dig the title, but it's not something bothersome. Rosario Dawson will be in it, though, which is a plus.

Ben Affleck Exits The Batman

Seems we have another story about Affleck no longer being Batman. At this point, fuck it. DC's movies are so haphazard and crazy that I'm not investing anything in them, in particular. If they aren't going to crossover with each other anymore, then go ahead and cast a new Batman. Just make good movies and maybe you can revisit the Justice League in the future when you have an actual game plan, instead of throwing things out there and hoping some of it sticks.

DC Super Pets

Yeah....this isn't one of those good ideas. A whole movie revolving around Krypto and all? Stupid. That's an animated kids flick project, not an actual movie.

Batman Beyond Film....J/K

Rumors went around that there would be a Batman Beyond film in the works. Now, those are said to be not true.

6 FLICKS PICKS

Which films make the cut?

6. The Prodigy — Nope, but given the options...

5. Cold Pursuit — Again, nope, but at least there might be a joke or two in the movie that I laugh at.

4. Fighting with My Family — Uuuuugggh I have to see this crap in order to have the proper context to cover it for Smark Out Moment. Damn it. I didn't even really love Paige as a performer, let alone think this movie looks decent.

3. Alita: Battle Angel — I'm not familiar with the source material and I don't think I'd like this all that much beyond just "meh" but it's more up my alley than most films this month.

2. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World — The previous two movies were good. Might as well round out the trilogy.

1. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part — Batman was better than the first movie, but yeah, this is the only one I know for sure I'll see in theaters.

Week in Geek #34: Ghostbusters 3, Young Justice Outsiders Part 1 Finale and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, January 26, 2019

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

New Ghostbusters Movie

Oh look, they finally want to do the thing that they should have done YEARS ago, when they could have had all four Ghostbusters (if not five, with Moranis) in the movie, but decided to dawdle, wait until Ramis died, then do that stupid all women version. Now, they can't get it to be as good as it could have been.

What I'm hoping is they do what needs to be done. They need to say that Egon is gone and they lost their top scientist and they need a new one, which can be one of the four or five new Ghostbusters, and that "smart one" needs to be either a woman and/or a minority to help it not be another scenario where it was just a bunch of white guys and Winston was on the sidelines.

Then, they need to make Oscar the protagonist and have them confirm that he's the son of Peter. Sigourney Weaver needs to appear alongside Bill Murray. He should have a love interest in the film who either is the scientist that I mentioned above, or some new character (I'd love for it to be Peck's daughter played by Emma Stone and I'd love for her to have an interest in the occult based on her father's dealing with the Ghostbusters in the past). I'd love for the team to be Oscar (make him the asshole like Peter), Winston's son (make him the heart like Winston, copy/paste but it works, or make him the tough one, like a former military guy who kicks their asses into gear and makes a team out of them who can actually do the job), the smart one (male/female, doesn't matter, but the new Egon; dorky, ideally female) and ideally the Peck witchcraft daughter who is rebellious and fun in her own way and all.

We'll see.

Unsolved Mysteries is Returning

I trust the people from Stranger Things, and the concept is simple enough that it's hard to mess up. Neat.

Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid

I'm not a gamer, but it really seems like games nowadays fall into two categories: they're either cheap and easy multiplayer fighting or shooting games with little to no story (and even then, it's a shell just to explain why people are fighting) or they're some mobile puzzle thing.

If I had any modern consoles or a PC that I dedicated to gaming, I'd love to play a Power Rangers game that was a real game with a story and all. I have no interest, personally, in something that's just "pick your character and fight another character and then fight another and then another" and if I do, I'd play Street Fighter or something else like that, you know?

The New Mutants Getting Delayed Again?

Rumors suggesting they'll push it back to November, if not just release it on Hulu, instead.

YES, put it on Hulu. Don't put this in theaters. It's not going to do well. It's only going to hurt the franchise's potential by putting a bad taste in people's mouths.

If people are interested in seeing this, they'll venture to Hulu to see it. If not, they'll not bother with it. But if you put it out in theaters, more people will see it by nature and if it sucks that bad, you'll just be setting them up to not trust more X-Men films in the future.

Young Justice: Outsider Mid-Season Break

The first half of this season of Young Justice has finished airing.

Let me reiterate something I've said many times in the past, that I love how adult this show is and how they treat the Justice League like a military unit, because eventually, that's how the team would operate. Expansion of members, utilizing people for their strengths, etc. I love that so much.

These last bunch of episodes were totally crazy, like the Doom Patrol Go thing and all the use of random characters like Metamorpho and Harper Row. I loved it. Court of Owls, even? Awesome.

The nominees for the 91st Academy Awards have been announced, so it's time for us to talk about some of the surprises, snubs and our predictions of which movies will take home an Oscar in 2019.

2019 Academy Awards snubs 91st Oscars predictions

A FEW NOTES BEFORE WE START:

Every year, I feel the need to point out when the list of movies feels largely unappealing to me and this time around, the same thing has happened. Something like The Favourite just does not come off as interesting to me and I don't think I could justify sitting down and watching that unless it does win a ton of awards.

As such, my opinion is going to be heavily skewed by face value interpretations, my attempts to predict how other people will view things through politics and typical b.s. like that, and what other analysts are saying, for the vast majority of the categories below.

Yaaaay for not having more interesting topics to cover as nowadays, every movie that's worth something at the Oscars has to be a historical drama or about some kind of marginalized group seeking their place in the world. Yawn.

I'm sure most of these movies won't ever be brought up in a conversation beyond Academy Awards season unless you're a film snob and you think you're holier than thou because you don't like "mainstream" things and you want to prove to your friends how educated and cultured you are because you can get on a soapbox and rant about If Beale Street Could Talk or Isle of Dogs instead of being a more likable person at a party.

CHECKLIST OF MOVIES BELOW:

* = I've seen the film
(#) = number of total nominations

+ giving myself a bonus point for having seen Bao (1)

THOUGHTS AND PREDICTIONS:

Now, onto my predictions, which I'll be updating as time goes on and I potentially watch any of these movies.

BEST PICTURE

THOUGHTS: Logic would dictate if The Favorite has the most nominations and is covered all over the place, it's probably going to win, right? However, Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book took home the Golden Globes. While it's not a guarantee or anything, I feel there's a strong chance Roma gets Best Foreign Language Film and NOT this because people won't want to vote for it twice and it'll have more competition and some people won't want to vote for a Netflix movie. I don't think Rhapsody has it. I think enough people are probably sick of the Lady Gaga stuff and A Star is Born fluff and no Best Director nomination hurts that. All in all, as much as I think it would be super rad if Black Panther were to win, I'm leaning toward Green Book to take it home.

PREDICTION: Green Book

BEST ACTOR

THOUGHTS: Something just feels right to me about Rami Malek winning. Maybe it's because he's playing a character who isn't a stereotypical "straight and white" guy and that can give him an edge. Maybe it's just because he won the Golden Globe. If not him, Viggo Mortensen feels like #2 to me.

PREDICTION: Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody

BEST ACTRESS

THOUGHTS: Do they give it to Lady Gaga for the sake of giving it to Lady Gaga, or does she need another 99 people out of 100 in a room to give her the win? Glenn Close beat her out. Maybe she does again? The same for Olivia Colman? Or is Colman more of someone who lots of people put on their list, but would be their #2 or #3?

PREDICTION: Glenn Close for The Wife

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

THOUGHTS: I have no idea.

PREDICTION: Mahershala Ali for Green Book

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

THOUGHTS: Absolutely no idea. Amy Adams seems like a throwaway nomination for the sake of liking her? Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz cancel each other out? Then, it's either Regina King or Marina de Tavira and fuck it, let's just guess.

PREDICTION: Regina King for If Beale Street Could Talk

BEST DIRECTOR

THOUGHTS: Total shot in the dark, they can give this to Roma to avoid giving it Best Picture, as this and Foreign Language Film is like a twofer in replacement for the big category.

PREDICTION: Alfonso Cuarón for Roma

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

THOUGHTS: I literally have no idea right now.

PREDICTION: The Favourite

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

THOUGHTS: I literally have no idea right now.

PREDICTION: BlacKkKlansman

BEST FILM EDITING

THOUGHTS: Until I see more, I'm not going to have a clue what the editing style is like, but I'll just take a shot in the dark at the moment.

PREDICTION: Vice

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

THOUGHTS: Very surprised Aquaman isn't on this list, as I thought it should have been a potential winner. Bumblebee...meh, we've seen it before five times. A bunch of others, whatever. To me, this is a race between Infinity War, Ready Player One and Mary Poppins Returns. It depends on if they want to go with spectacle, sheer amount, or nostalgia.

PREDICTION: Avengers: Infinity War

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

THOUGHTS: No idea.

PREDICTION: Roma

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

THOUGHTS: Oooo this is tough. They love their period pieces and The Favourite can certainly win that. But does that mean they go with that, or do they opt to go for the whole African culture angle with Black Panther instead?

PREDICTION: Black Panther

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

THOUGHTS: Again, period piece stuff with fancy dresses seems to be the bread and butter of this category, but Black Panther had tons of tribal material and could definitely snatch this away. I'm going to hedge my bets.

PREDICTION: Black Panther

BEST MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING

THOUGHTS: Look at Christian Bale.

PREDICTION: Vice

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

THOUGHTS: Having not seen the other movies yet, I have to lean toward Black Panther because I liked some of the songs used in that.

PREDICTION: Ludwig Göransson for Black Panther

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

THOUGHTS: If not just to get Lady Gaga to perform...

PREDICTION: "Shallow" from A Star is Born

BEST SOUND EDITING

THOUGHTS: Four out of five films are nominated for both Editing and Mixing. This makes me think A Quiet Place could win this for standing out as special, but if not, and it goes to the other four, that makes sense due to being nominated so much.

PREDICTION: A Quiet Place

BEST SOUND MIXING

THOUGHTS: Basically, the same applicable thing as what I said for Editing, but swap A Quiet Place for A Star is Born. However, I'm going to hedge my bets again and not go with that switch, by picking one of the four other movies.

PREDICTION: First Man

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

THOUGHTS: Lots of people loved Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in ways that I don't even think are all that super duper amazing, but I did enjoy it, too. Let's go with that momentum. It's not going to be Incredibles 2 and I don't think it'll be Ralph Breaks the Internet, so I think the other two (Isle of Dogs and Mirai) are from people who think on a different spectrum for animation and we'll see Spider-Man take the cake in a more popular vote.

PREDICTION: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

THE REST OF THE CATEGORIES

Including:
Best Animated Short Film
Best Documentary Feature
Best Documentary Short Subject
Best Foreign Language Film
Best Live Action Short Film

THOUGHTS: No nomination for Won't You Be My Neighbor? in documentary feature? Bao better win animated short. I'm assuming Roma wins Best Foreign Language Film for sure. Largely, though, I know nothing about these categories and I never do, so if I do any predictions, they're just shots in the dark and you don't want to hear my pointless ramblings about things I'm not in the slightest bit knowledgable about. I have no idea which movies should have been nominated but weren't, which films should not have been nominated but were, or anything else like that. Essentially, I could put all of them up on a dart board and whatever I hit, those are my picks, and I'd probably do just as well as if I tried to guess blindly on my own merits. If you know anything about any of those films, feel free to enlighten me in the comments section so I can try to check them out if I can get access to any of them before the ceremony takes place.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

This year is very unpredictable, which is a good thing, as it means it isn't likely that one movie will sweep and just destroy everything. That could happen, of course, but I don't think it will. The downside to that, though, is that this can go down as a year that people don't remember being a strong one for movies, as I don't think we'll be hearing too many people bringing up Roma and The Favourite and A Star is Born and Green Book and whatnot in many regular conversations about film.
