Week in Geek #37: Academy Awards Tries to Cut Categories, Trailers and More

Posted by Anthony Mango Saturday, February 16, 2019
Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Aladdin Teaser

Mehh....Aladdin looks like Aladdin. Jasmine looks like Jasmine. They've got the monkey and the tiger. The magic carpet is there. WTF is up with Jafar sounding like his balls haven't dropped yet? Genie is just "blue Will Smith" so that's a bit weird and will take some time to adjust to. Really, I'm seeing this movie no matter what, but this didn't wow me as much as I was hoping it would.

Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Animated Movie in the Works

This is crazy, but since I'm a fan of both, I'm totally up for checking it out. Darren Criss is Raphael? He strikes me more as a Donatello. Very curious. Very confused. Very intrigued. Cool.

Frozen 2 Trailer

Music. Scenery. Gusto. I totally checked out of this. Give me an indication of the story itself and not just some "isn't Frozen great?" type thing. I thought Frozen was just okay.

The Reach Spinoff Movie

I forgot to mention this last week, but a report is going around that there will be a spinoff film from Aquaman that will be a horror movie revolving around The Reach. Horrible idea. They're just monsters that look like humanoid piranhas. It wouldn't serve any function, really, because the cast of characters to follow would be pointless. DC needs to stop having people make pitches that lead nowhere.

Academy Awards Cutting Categories from Live Broadcast

Apparently, Film Editing, Cinematography, Live Action Short and Makeup and Hairstyling won't be airing on the TV broadcast for the Oscars, because they want to cut down on the time. Here's a thought: how about you cut down on all the frivolous bullshit instead? How about doing my suggestion about making it a weekend affair?

DC Super Hero Girls Trailer

...not for me.
