Yes, yes. This year's Annabelle was not a masterpiece, but who cares! The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist, set to be released on June 10, 2016, seems to have all the right elements to be as awesome (if not even better) as its 2013 predecessor, which made a whopping $318 million worldwide.

Farmiga and Wilson as the Warrens.
For starters, both the original director, James Wan, and writers, Chad and Carey Hayes, are returning for the sequel, which will focus on another case in Ed and Lorraine Warren's long list of real-life paranormal investigations. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will reprise their roles as the two investigators.

Although the official plot of the script has not been announced yet, here is a short account of the true bone-chilling story that inspired the movie: the Enfield Poltergeist.

It all started on the evening of August 30, 1977, at a council house in Enfield, North London, England. Single mom Peggy Hodgson was trying to put her four children—Margaret, age 13; Janet, 11; Johnny, 10; Billy, 7—to bed when Janet complained about her brother's bed shaking. Peggy did not pay much attention to it, but on the following night Peggy experienced something she could not ignore.

After hearing a crashing sound coming from Janet's room, the single mother rushed in only to find a chest of drawers moving by itself. Suddenly, the chest was propelled toward the door by an invisible force. Scared, Peggy and her children ran to her neighbors' house.

Not knowing what to do, the frightened neighbors called the police. The attending female police constable, Carolyn Heeps, was not able to do much at the scene, since no one was breaking the law. However, she did see "a large armchair moved, unassisted, 4 ft across the floor."

Next, press. Daily Mirror photographer Graham Morris was contacted. He was able to capture some of the supernatural phenomena on camera, but things seemed to be getting worse.

After BBC visited the house to try to record some of the phenomena, the family finally sought help from the Society for Psychical Research (SPR), which sent investigators Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair, a poltergeist expert who subsequently wrote This House Is Haunted, to investigate.

Grosse, when interviewed by Will Storr, recorded the chaos in the house:
As soon as I got there, I realised that the case was real because the family was in a bad state. Everybody was in chaos. [At first] nothing happened for a while, then I experienced Lego pieces [and marbles] flying across the room; The extraordinary thing was, when you picked them up, they were hot.
Levitation Possession Ghost Poltergeist True Horror Exorcist
" I thought I was going to die," Janet Hodgson.
Although many people experienced objects flying, furniture moving, and heard knocking coming from inside the walls, most of the activity seemed to be centered around 11-year-old Janet. The girl would go into violent trances and became certain she was possessed by a ghost named Bill Wilkins.

According to the paranormal investigators' reports, Janet would levitate and speak in an eerie, raspy voice when she was allegedly possessed by Wilkins. In one instance, a invisible force seemed to control a curtain, which tried to strangle her.

To this day, Janet stands by her story: "[The poltergeist] lived off me, off my energy. Call me mad if you like. Those events did happen. The poltergeist was with me and I feel that in a sense he always will be."

For a more on this true ghost story, check out the documentary below, where most (if not all) audio recordings of Janet's trances can be heard.

Cynics believe it was all a big hoax, but no one can deny the Enfield Poltergeist is one fascinating ghost story. It will make an awesome story for the Conjuring 2.

Week in Geek: November 16th, 2014

Posted by Jeff Penner - Sunday, November 16, 2014

Want to know what happened the past few days in nerd culture? WEEK IN GEEK is your quick fix to catch up with the rest of the fanboys out there.

Nerdy current events in geek culture for this week

MOVIES

Suicide Squad Brings A-List Characters.

My take: Joker (Jared Leto, maybe) and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) may appear in the upcoming film, a definite change from the B and C list characters the series depends on. Though they may be part of the story and not the team, it still adds the film into the new DC Cinematic Universe and, thus, Joker and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). A strange way to tease them for an upcoming Batman film, perhaps?

Batman v Superman Films "death of the Waynes" Sequence.

My take: Ugh. We can't get a Star Trek movie without an original cast member involved and we can't get a Batman movie without a "Thomas and Martha Wayne" flashback. I expect there to also be a shot of Krypton exploding and Clark jumping up in bed screaming, covered in super-sweat.

Doctor Doom is a Blogger Named "Doom".

My take: Not wanting to judge a film before seeing a single frame of footage, I'm still disappointed to hear any and all tidbits on the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. The supposed "down to earth" version doesn't work with the word "fantastic", or fans expectations. Actor Toby Kebbell recently revealed he will be playing the role of Victor Domashev, who blogs online as "Doom". He is an anti-social computer programmer and, eventually, becomes Dr. Doom. Who knows what this means for the origins of The Fantastic Four themselves.

TELEVISION

Dr Leslie Thompkins Added to "Gotham".

My take: …as a love interest for Jim Gordon. What? She's an obvious character to have on the series, and should have been since episode one. To have her as a love interest is certainly a twist, but an unnecessary one. She will also be a large excuse to have Bruce in the story more, which I'm not a huge fan of (sorry, kid).

The Flash Wins Best Show Thus Far.

My take: About half a dozen episodes in for the somewhat disappointing Gotham, the impressive Constantine and The Flash, the latter wins top honours in my opinion. The episodes are fun and the effects are great to watch, albeit the current "freak of the week" is growing tired.

Katie Cassidy Revealed in Black Canary Costume.

My take: Since I'm only in season 2 and this got spoiled for me, now it's spoiled for you, too! You're welcome!

COMIC BOOKS

Joker Returns in Batman.

My take: His return may feel a long time in the waiting but after getting a year long flashback story, didn't they technically just deal with him a couple weeks ago? In any case, he's back with a new face (as was inevitable) and another sales boost for DC.

Spider-Verse Finally Moving Along.

My take: After trudging through Edge of Spider-Verse, we're finally on our way. I'm curious what makes 616 Peter Parker so special and if it has any connection to 2015's Secret Wars. As long as Spider-Ham survives, I don't care who else they kill.

DC's Convergence Details.

My take: As excited as I want to be for this Crisis On Infinite Earths anniversary story, I can't help but feel underwhelmed. I'm a Pre-New-52 fan and hope some elements return from that era. Many of the teased characters (Donna Troy, Wally West) reek of "cannon fodder", considering DC's attempt at updating their roster.

Watch out for this segment each and every weekend. We'll see you next week!

Press Start: Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack 1 Overview

Posted by Tam To - Saturday, November 15, 2014

Nintendo is still wet behind the ears when it comes to including downloadable content for their big AAA releases. Regardless, you can rest assured that Mario Kart 8's first batch of DLC is extremely well done.

DLC Pack 1 and free wallpaper for Nintendo Mario Kart 8In total, Mario Kart 8 features two DLC packs: the first has just been recently released, while a second will be released in May of 2015. The first pack includes three new drivers, four new vehicles, and two new cups featuring eight new tracks.

Perhaps the most popular feature of this DLC pack is one of the new characters, Link from the Legend of Zelda franchise. This will be Link's first foray into Mario's crazy kart-riding antics, and it's safe to say that he fits in surprisingly well. Hearing Link excitedly yell in pure joy when performing tricks off of ramps or exclaiming cautiously when he's gliding through the air is something that will strike long-time Zelda fans as both jarring and satisfying.

Link is also accompanied by his own vehicle, known as the Master Cycle, which brandishes Hylian shields on either side and a horse motif. Not only that, but Link gets a whole track—no, a whole cup devoted to him in the form of the Triforce Cup. The tracks included in this are Wario's Gold Mine from Mario Kart Wii, Rainbow Road from Super Mario Kart, Ice Ice Outpost, and of course, Hyrule Circuit.

Check out this video to see Link, the Master Cycle, and the Triforce Cup in action:

Just when you think you've had enough DLC from the pack already, there's more! Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach make appearances as well. The following vehicles are also available: the Tanooki Kart, B Dasher, and Blue Falcon (on loan from Captain Falcon of F-Zero fame).

Joining the Triforce Cup is another new cup: the Egg Cup. This includes Yoshi Circuit from Mario Kart: Double Dash, Excitebike Arena (paying homage to the old NES classic), Dragon Driftway, and Mute City from the F-Zero franchise. Check out the videos below to see those in action!

Have you gotten the chance to try out this DLC pack for Mario Kart 8 yet? What are your thoughts on it? Let us know in the comments!

Mario Kart 8 is available exclusively for the Wii U. DLC Pack 1 is available now, while DLC Pack 2 will be available in May of 2015, both priced at $7.99. Pre-purchasing both packs in a bundle for $11.99 will allow players access to new Yoshi and Shy Guy alternate character colors.

Press Start films weekly and can be followed on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Going forward, yours truly will play a game here and there usually for about 10 to 20 minutes because, frankly, anything longer and you all would lose interest. Hear my commentary as I take on some of the classics and some of the new-age stuff I don't quite understand!

In this installment, my nephew John teams up and loses track of time with fellow Dace Man Show co-host Gibby. This time we play Playstation 3's Twisted Metal and the second level in the Sweet Tooth Campaign. See how delusional and deranged we get while playing for over an hour and with my nephew, who is clearly better than us, in part two.

Wytches invade a young girls body
Wytches 2 cover
by Jock and Hollingsworth
Wytches is a provocative story that entices readers deeper into the narrative with subplots that play on basic human instincts.

Issue #2 of this Image publication picks up after the cliffhanger Scott Snyder left us with in the opening events. Sailor has been left traumatized by recent events at school, her mother Lucy is left wheelchair bound as the result of an accident, and her father Charlie is trying to bring a sense of normality back to his family.

It is this final thread, family, or more specifically parenthood, that provides the real sense of horror in Wytches. Charlie's sense of paranoia about how to look after his daughter when he can't really help the emotional and mental strain she is under, only helps to underpin the suspense that is building around the actual material appearance of the Wytches themselves. It is the hopelessness held back only by the parental drive to protect your children, and the prospect of not being able to or failing somehow in this endeavor, that strikes a cord on a very different level for Wytches.

Overtly, Wytches is about the supernatural existence of an ancient and evil group of creatures who haunt their victims. In issue #2 it is too soon to tell what the central characters are building into, but as Snyder builds to the conclusion of the first arc of this series, it would appear that we see some gripping art and story developments.

A chair lift metaphor for frustrating problems
Wytches strikes a realism
 that lifts the suspense.
As this is a new, creator-owned story we don't have to be concerned with plot holes, and the nature of the story content allows us to believe in a possibility of unnatural elements. This brings to the fore a sense of enjoyment; it is very easy to get lost in the pages of Wytches #2. Only as the last page turns do you realize that the end of the issue is come too soon.

The momentum driving the pace in this issue of Wytches is provided by the various subplots from the main characters in the Rooks family. They we more unified in issue #1, but as their lives take on day-to-day activities such as work and school, the options for Snyder to explore what makes each of them tick is maximized. To this end, he doesn't disappoint; I was left with as many questions by the concluding panels as I was from issue #1.

The art by Jock and Matt Hollingsworth is both mesmerizing and psychedelic. For any comic book series, the art needs to instantly appeal to a new reader' it's what they see first, what draws them in enough to want to spend their hard-earned cash. Goal achieved with Wytches.

Jock and Snyder have a well-established collaboration with their work at DC, and it shows in issue #2. There is a predominance of close-up shots focusing on character reactions and emotions that works in well with the suspense of the story. Jock also controls the pace well,  using a consistent number of panels per page on average. We do not have quick or slow portions of the issue but are carried through by the drawn images content rather than numbers.

Sailor is attacked by the Wytches
Sailor is attacked and left scared by
the Wytches.
Shadows and shading are not an artistic aspect that needs to be brought out from Jock in Wytches #2. A tin inking from Jock, coupled with the colors from Hollingsworth, makes this unnecessary. The colors are simply fantastic in this series. They are as much an important element of Wytches as the story and drawing.

Hollingsworth takes an unconventional approach to color and pulls it off with dramatic results. On each page Jock's art is brought to life with an appropriateness of color that helps it fit the context of the story. Overlaid on this is a splatter of hues and colors that add weight to each page, like the sun, emerging from behind a cloud, that is glaringly beautiful. Hollingsworth is also assigning specific colors to each character's situation. Blues and purples mark the main plot of the story, and reds shout from the Wytches. However, depending on the location or time of day, the colors change to suit the situation.

Wytches brings together an artistic team that has a sense of cohesion and drama and ultimately provides us with a great comic. This is a highly recommended read, and I can't wait for the next installment. Monthly is simply too long between issues. While I cant get enough of this series, we want to hear your thoughts, so make sure to leave us a comment below.

Nightcrawlers adventures restart in issue 8
Nightcrawler 8 cover by Nauck and Rosenberg
"Its strange. Even after the death of a dear friend, how quickly things get back to normal."

Nightcrawler's opening narrative thoughts summarizes exactly where we are heading next.

Another X-Man has fallen, but life at the Jean Grey School has to resume for those left behind. Nightcrawler #8 picks up after the previous issue, which focused on remembering Wolverine, but with some time now past, the story picks back up for Nightcrawler.

It's great to see that Chris Claremont's story is going places. He is leading into a nice adventure story in the next issue. There is a lot of action taking placing, although some aspects of this issue push against the believability of the plot.

Claremont is bringing a sense of cohesion to a the narrative by bringing together the Crimson Pirates from earlier issues and an old nemesis, the Shadow King. With the elevation of villain, the stakes feel a little higher for the X-Men, and it is nice to feel a little suspense in this fun story.

X-Men and the Jean Grey School
Nightcrawler's world returns to
some sense of normality...
It seems to me from the collaboration of artists on Nightcrawler that this is aimed at a younger audience. The plot is straightforward, which supports such a target market, but I'm not sure about romantically linking Bloody Bess with Nightcrawler, especially after the more recent leading ladies we have seen in either his series or Amazing X-Men; it seems tenuous to have another female compatriot in this manner so soon. Much like Amazing X-Men, we may not be dealing with a series too concerned with continuity but rather focused instead on the fun adventure to be had, which makes complete sense for a comic aimed at readers who don't need to be bogged down with decades of lore to understand.

Todd Nauck picks up the pace of the art to match the adventure of the story. The art feels invigorated this issue. We certainly still get the distinct style Nauck has delivered since the beginning of this series, but it feels more mature at this point.

A clear standout feature of Nauck's artistic ability is the change from overtly conventional panel arrangements to some that are less so. For example, the use of panel boarders, which are made up of psychic energy from the Shadow King, is a good way to break up the flow of the panel on shift focus. Panels angling upward on a diagonal not only disorientated the art, which matches the story element of Nightcrawler traveling to a desert, but also grabs the attention of the reader, refocusing us on the page.

Nightcrawlers training is suddenly interrupted
Nauck and Rosenberg use
'psychic' panels boarders.
While we continuously feel the essence of fun in Nauck's art throughout this issue and the series as a whole, we have an equal sense of playfulness from the colors of Rachelle Rosenberg. The combination of these talents provides Nightcrawler #8 with an inviting cover. The titular character is front and center, sword drawn in a daring and swashbuckling manner. Flanked by characters who have been central to the stories in the series so far, the cover seems to state "This is where we are now and what we have been through, now let's have some fun."

Rosenberg's colors are consistently bright and chirpy. They suit the style, tone, and intended audience of the series. I suspect also, though without confirmation, that Rosenberg's influence on some of the other artistic results of the final comic, such as the distinct psychic panels layout described above, works in tandem with Nauck.

Nightcrawler #8 is a good return to action for this series. It has a dynamic pace and straightforward plot, which makes for some fun, light entertainment. We are provided a setup that will lead into showdown with a well-known villain, and when the odds seem insurmountable, it suits Nightcrawler's style the most. While I had fun reading this, we want to hear what you think. Make sure you leave a comment below, or head over to our Facebook page and message me there.

Hungry Hal: Mobile Game Review

Posted by Kym Pressley - Wednesday, November 12, 2014

Mobile game Hungry Hal brain eating zombieShuffle forward and consume the brains of the masses in Hungry Hal, a comedic side-scrolling endless runner. Dodge explosions, missiles, and bear traps as you collect bones to purchase power ups and compete for highest score. While there are more than a few endless runners out there, Hungry Hal sticks out because of the comedic elements, theme, and the differences in game play.

In Hungry Hal, there are three lanes laden with traps that you run down horizontally. Hitting these traps slows you for a few seconds and lowers your hunger meter. Obviously, when your hunger meter empties, you're dead—for real this time. To replenish it, you chase down people trying to escape the zombie apocalypse and feast upon their grey matter.

Attacking a person takes their brain as they let out a funny death cry. As you advance further in the level, the people will launch into a dead sprint to get away, letting out another funny sound. More obstacles get in the way of your feast the further you go, making the game more difficult but giving a rewarding feeling as you climb the leader boards. The game's only substantial set back is the one shared by most endless runners; once the competitive aspect fades, the game becomes repetitive. However, until it does, it's a fun and engaging way to pass the time.

Overall, I give Hungry Hal a 4/5. It sticks well to its theme of a zombie apocalypse, manages to make it funny, and has simple controls with increasingly challenging game play. I recommend giving it a try and let me know what you think about it.

Bye Bella! The NSFW Lesbians "Vampyres" are Coming Back

Posted by Unknown - Tuesday, November 11, 2014

vampires art poster sexy blood horror lust sexLong before vampires sparkled and had awkward relationships with expressionless teenage girls, they were interesting villains who acted as walking metaphors for society's darkest desires and sexuality.

Aside from the ones inspired by the rat-like appearance of Nosferatu (hello, The Strain), many of these bloodsuckers are attractive and extremely seductive, making it hard for their victims to not want to trade bodily fluids, mostly blood, with them.

After a year in production, Victor Matellano's Vampyres, a remake of Jose Larraz's 1974 erotic-horror cult classic, is finally done. The story, written by Larraz himself, focuses on a "lesbian vampire couple [who] waylay and abduct various passer-byes, both male and female, to hold them captive at their rural manor in the English countryside in order to kill and feed on them to satisfy their insatiable thirst for blood."

In other words, there is plenty of sex and bloodbaths.

Check out the trailer, which should be noted is definitely not safe for work!

The film stars Marta Flich and Almudena Léon as the vampires and various Eurohorror celebrities such as Conrado San Martín (The Awful Dr. Orloff), May Heatherly (Pieces), Fele Martínez (Tesis), Antonio Mayans (Oasis of the Zombies), Lone Fleming (Tombs of the Blind Dead), and genre veteran Caroline Munro (1980's Maniac, Spy Who Loved Me).

Special effects makeup artist Colin Arthur, responsible not only for the effects in the original film but also for the ones in Conan and The Never Ending Story, was in charge of the bloodbaths and gore.

Paget Brewster & Keith David Head to Yahoo's Community Season 6

Posted by The Dace Man - Monday, November 10, 2014

"Six seasons and a movie" seemed like a farfetched idea if you base it on Community's luck with NBC, but thankfully, Yahoo! took a gamble and signed them on for that sixth season as part of the Yahoo! Screens lineup.

Unfortunately, due to the constant uncertainty of a renewal, many of the beloved Greendale Community College students won't be showing up because the stars playing those roles sought work elsewhere. Last season, the show lost Troy Barnes (Donald Glover) and Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase), and it was recently announced that Shirley Bennett will be missing this season because Yvette Nicole Brown will be taking care of a family emergency. The gang has effectively been cut in half, and we can't expect Professor Ian Duncan or Buzz Hickey to be returning on a regular basis, either. Needless to say, this hopeful sixth season got the wind knocked out of it quickly. Luckily, the Dacetacular one has some good news for Community fans.

Joining the already enlisted students and faculty at Greendale will be Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds) and Keith David (Enlisted). Brewster will play Francesca "Frankie" Dart, an advisor brought in to help Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) and the faculty spruce up the school. David will play Elroy Patashnik, a retired scientist looking to reinvent himself. Fans of the show should recognize Keith David for appearing on episode 14 of season 3, "Pillows and Blankets" as the narrator of the documentary, as well as having been a principal member of the cast of the show The Cape, which has frequently been referenced on Community over the years.

Community season six new cast

The sixth season of Community is set to air exclusively on Yahoo! in early 2015.

In a recent interview to promote the Blu-ray release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, actor Toby Kebbell revealed a couple of important details about his portrayal of classic Marvel villain Doctor Doom in the upcoming The Fantastic Four film.

Fantastic 4 Victor Domashev Toby Kebbell Doctor Doom

As if there weren't enough changes already being made, with Sue Storm being adopted, Johnny Storm being black, and their powers not deriving from a cosmic storm, it appears as though Doctor Doom will be going through some alterations as well.

First up: He is no longer Victor von Doom, nor is he the Ultimate Fantastic 4 variation of Victor Van Damme, but Victor Domashev.

Remember that longstanding rivalry between Doom (excuse me, Domashev) and Reed Richards, where they've been competitive for a long time and near equals in all forms of scientific discovery? Well, this time around, Victor is "a very antisocial programmer" who uses the alias Doom on blogs.

While I'm not too fond of the programmer idea, I do like the name Victor Domashev. Victor von Doom was always too cheesy for me and Victor Van Damme just always reminded me of Jean-Claude Van Damme. Considering Doctor Doom's Latverian lineage, a surname like Domashev sounds foreign enough for me.

What do you think of these changes? Is this a step in the right direction for this film or just another flaw that proves that it is a disaster waiting to happen?

Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Check out the interview below:

The Fantastic Four will be released in theaters August 7, 2015.

Directed by: Josh Trank.
Written by: Simon Kinberg (screenplay), Jeremy Slater (story and screenplay), Josh Trank (story), T.S. Nowlin (revisions), Jack Kirby (characters) and Stan Lee (characters).
Starring: Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Toby Kebbell, Jamie Bell, Michael B. Jordan, and Tim Blake Nelson.

Thor Annual #1 CM PunkThe long-awaited news that the entire world has been waiting for: CM Punk has made his return. Not to a WWE ring, however, but to the pages of Marvel comics.

What's up, Dacetacular nation? That's right, the Dacetacular one here bringing you the latest news involving Marvel Comics and, in this odd instance, World Wrestling Entertainment.

If you're a huge wrestling fan like I am, you were pretty bummed out after last year's Royal Rumble when CM Punk effectively took his ball and went home. To this day Punk has never returned or mentioned anything about WWE. If you think about it, the only news or appearances we would see of CM Punk were comic related.

So it's no surprise CM Punk will be taking a crack at penning a comic himself. It was announced today that he would be joining the Marvel team to work on Thor Annual #1. Punk had this to say about his inclusion into the iconic comic distributor:

"The only thing (Jason Aaron) said to me was, 'I need a story about young Thor. Tell me what you think,'" Punk told Marvel about how he developed his story. "And the first idea that popped into my mind was the first thing I pitched to him, and he said he loved it, so we’re running with it. The idea was, let’s do a story about young Thor as kind of a brash, bratty teenager who’s like, 'I’m totally worthy of this hammer. My dad’s full of [expletive]. I don’t know why I’m not "worthy" of the hammer. Look at all this cool stuff I did.' And it’s more or less like a drinking story. He’s gonna be sitting around with a few choice characters from the Marvel Universe, and they’re all gonna be drinking, and Thor’s gonna basically be complaining about essentially why his dad won’t give him the keys to the car."
So what do you think about the wrestler turned writer? Here's to me hoping the best in the world stays true to that tag line. Good luck CM Punk.
