All-New Marvel NOW! Moon Knight #6 Review

Posted by Orion Petitclerc - Sunday, August 10, 2014

I already hate writing this review. Not because it's about something I dislike, but because it's about something I like coming to an end. Sort of. Moon Knight #6 marks two conclusions: first, it's the end of the current creative team's run on the book. As I announced back in my review of issue #4, Brian Wood and Greg Smallwood are replacing Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey respectively with Jordie Bellaire remaining as the book's colorist. It's sad to see the change-up after such an astounding run, but, hopefully, the next team can keep the pace the last one set.

Marvel superhero Moon Knight explosion

Second, the book marks the end of an overarching story arc. But wait, you say, wasn't every issue written as one-shot stories? Yes, so we were led to believe, but Ellis pulls a fast one with issue #6 and reveals to us the one unifying thread that he cleverly wove into the first issue: an unassuming beat cop who would go on to become another pitiful rogue in Moon Knight's gallery.

When I first read Moon Knight #1, I surmised that the plot about Marc being inhabited by the spirit of Khonshu was going to be the series' overarching story. Since then, though, Ellis never revisited that point. I assume Wood will be picking up those pieces soon when he begins his run. Instead, Ellis cleverly planted seeds that would finally bloom in his final issue, the roots of which connect almost every issue in between. It was a clever move—one nobody would have seen coming from a mile away.

My favorite part of what is being hailed as the creative team's swan song of the series is Ellis' attentiveness to the hero's history—something that I've praised time and again in almost every review. Until now, only one character from Moon Knight's supporting cast had made an appearance in the new series with next to nothing in terms of explanation as to why Marc's most important confidantes are missing. Ellis finally appeases the long-time Moon Knight fans with special guest appearances by Marc's long-time off-and-on again romantic interest, Marlene Alraune-Fontaine, and old mercenary buddy and mooncopter pilot, Jean-Paul "Frenchie" Duchamp. This also offers explanations as to why Moon Knight has, thus far, led a largely solo operation.

Follow Marc Spector and Frenchie's mercenary days in Moon Knight #1 by Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz available on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited
The reason behind Moon Knight's loneliness plays well into the rise of this issue's new nemesis: the Black Spectre. The name is a familiar one to any seasoned Moon Knight fan who remembers the villain and his alter ego, Carson Knowles. He was once a mayoral aspirant who took a wrong turn and became one of Moon Knight's signature foes. Knowles was killed when Moon Knight pushed him from atop a building before he could activate a swarm of nanites to control a crowd of would-be admirers below at the conclusion of Moon Knight: God and Country in 2008. So who is the new Black Spectre? You'll just have to read the comic to find out!

Shalvey gives it one last and glorious hurrah with this issue, proving once and for all that he and Bellaire are an artistic duo of epic proportions. The scenes leading up to the final battle are swathed in appropriately moody inks and mundane colors, all culminating into a fiery blaze as this creative team goes out with a bang. As an extra special treat, readers are treated to a 4-page preview of issue #7—Wood and Smallwood's debut—which does not disappoint (at least, it doesn't disappoint me).

Read the Black Spectre's origin in the collected Essential Moon Knight Volume 2 available on Amazon

Moon Knight #6 gets 5 stars out of 5 for both the writing and art. Ellis and Shalvey go out guns blazing while Wood and Smallwood sneak in with confidence and promise. I urge anyone who is reading this series not to drop the book after this issue, as I'm sadly seeing many profess to doing after the nearly-perfect first six issues. Let's not kill something good even if it's changing hands; instead, let's celebrate a fresh take with open minds and a fan's appreciation for all things Moon Knight.

The Military Quarter is perhaps the most fun I've had with Naxxramas yet. I mean, Loatheb and the hunter Class Challenge were like popping bubble wrap (an analogy I only managed to triumphantly score yesterday). However, this time around it felt like a pleasant Tetris game. The mechanics of the Hero Power and specific cards on the following three foes were something that really made me review my decks.

Blizzard Hearthstone Heroes of Warcraft Curse of Naxxramas expansion military quarter

This time, there wasn't a single enemy I managed to beat on my first try. Instructor Razuvious was a cool fight - his Massive Runeblade (haha, no pun intended) is quite something: a 5/2 weapon. Ok, not that terrible—only it deals twice as much damage to the player hero than to minions. I had to modify my warrior deck with some Acidic Swamp Oozes and Bloodsail Corsairs after my first defeat, but it wasn't too difficult afterwards. Blizzard kinda hands this one to you as you get a free Mind Control Crystal in your hand, which steals his two 0/7 taunts for you right on the opening turn (even on heroic!). Regardless, having such comfort is quite pleasing. Kinda like stacking blocks on level 1 in Tetris and allowing that one long block through the corner hole. Ahhh.

Blizzard Hearthstone Heroes of Warcraft Curse of Naxxramas expansion military quarter Baron Rivendare
That was a close call. Like, really close!

The next challenge was quite something, and I had to cook up a few variations of a Paladin deck to take advantage of the tricky Spectrals you're 'rewarded' with after killing certain minions. Gothik the Harvester will unload tons of Unrelenting Trainees, Warriors, and Riders, whose death-rattles release spectral versions of themselves to your side and deal 1 damage to your hero at the beginning of your turn. Clearly, some Blessing of Kings and Blessing of Mights are in order, since these 'gifted' minions are 0/2, 0/4, and 0/6 respectively. Buff them up and attack other minions with them to speed up their demise.

Blizzard Hearthstone Heroes of Warcraft Curse of Naxxramas expansion military quarter Razuvious
Needless to say, those Acidic Swamp
Oozes made an appearance.
The last boss in the Military Quarter is Baron Rivendare, who was actually easy. The Baron acts as the hero, while three 1/7 minions with the ability to render the enemy hero invincible stand ground: Lady Blaumeux, Sir Zeliek, and Thane Korth'azz. Together, they form Voltron! Well, OK, just The Four Horsemen. Unlike the Metallica song, this quartet is quite mellow (yes, even in Heroic) since it's a gimmick-y deck. By silencing the minions, you render Baron Rivendare vulnerable and can charge against him. Another cool trick is to execute them with the warrior spell. Have no fear for minions against this foe: the Baron only has spells. The trick is that his Runeblade, normally a 1/3, becomes 3/3 when the Horsemen are dead. Also, he has a +1/1 for minions and weapon spell, which isn't fun if you allow things to escalate. With a modified warrior deck, it was an easy game. Silencing the Horsemen is the way to go unless you rush the Baron after they're gone.

Blizzard Hearthstone Heroes of Warcraft Curse of Naxxramas expansion military quarter class challengesThe Class Challenges this time are shaman and warlock. Nothing much to report, other than I lost my first Class Challenge game against Gothik.

Oops.

Well, shaman was never my forte, but still, something must be said for the awesome card that you're rewarded from the challenge: Reincarnate, which is perfect for triggering death-rattles.

Next was the warlock challenge. It was somewhat uneventful. The only advice: don't use Jaraxxus— Baron Rivendare has Sacrifical Pact cards, and can nail you from there. Instead, let Jaraxxus be placed on the field with one of your Voidcaller death-rattles.

Ah, Heroic. Where would the world (of Warcraft) be without Heroic? Since my last beatings in the Plague Quarter, I chose to go backwards and started with the last boss first, just for kicks. Baron Rivendare is not much even in Heroic: his Runeblade is now 2/3, and when the Horsemen are dead, becomes 6/3 (this is why it's important to silence them rather than straight kill). The Horsemen merely gained one attack and thus 2/7. Rivendare himself is only up to 14 health, so after about two tries, I nailed it, but not before painfully learning that the Paladin's Equality is useless. Thanks Kel'thuzad.

Blizzard Hearthstone Heroes of Warcraft Curse of Naxxramas expansion military quarter Heroic Gothik defeated fatigue
Perhaps the best way to
vanquish Heroic Gothik.
Heroic Razuvious was a little tougher. His Massive Runeblade is now a 'humble' 10/2, which still deals twice as much damage to the player hero. Acidic Swamp Ooze x 2, Bloodsail Corsair x 2, Harrison Jones x 1 plus a few taunts. Doesn't hurt to be cautious.

Gothik was a whole other level. His Hero Power now cost 1 mana (naturally making it compulsory), and drew 2 cards… and added a mana to his tray. So by turn 5, he was placing minions like crazy. I had to do some snooping on Hearthpwn to find a proper deck, and modified it until I managed to defeat him after around 7 tries. Not as tough as Maexxna, Loatheb, or Heigen, but right up there on the challenge notch.

You can view the decks I used to defeat each of them above.
Blizzard Hearthstone Heroes of Warcraft Curse of Naxxramas expansion military quarter Baron Rivendare Heroic no Equality paladin
Oh, that's just cheap, Kel'thuzad.

For some reason, the Military Quarter was the most entertaining. Maybe it was the change of pace from one enemy to the next with completely different strategies, or maybe I like the evil undertone this particular wing had over the past couple.

How did you guys cope with the Heroic enemies this time around? Are you warrior buffs like me, or did you play out a different strategy? Comment and stay tuned for the Construct Quarter!

Interview with Lydia's Leighton Antelman

Posted by Unknown - Friday, August 8, 2014

Last year, I set out in search of inspiration. I needed something, anything to help me overcome this huge case of writer's block. I was sick of listening to music that felt, for lack of a better word, industrialized. Everything on my playlist sounded the same—all engineered in the same pretty package.

After a random search online, I came across "Back to Bed," a song off of Lydia's latest album entitled Devil. It was love at first note; each song has its own style with soulful lyrics and influential music. It's safe to say that my writer's block became non-existent after that album.

Indie rock band Lydia consists of members Leighton Antelman, Matt Keller, and Justin Camacho. Though the members have been shaken up a bit over the years, the band has actually been around since 2003. Each one of their releases is uniquely diverse. Which I love because it shows that the group can explore their creativity without complying to certain molds. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing their front man, Antelman, with some pretty off-the-wall Fangirl questions as well as finding out what the band has planned for the upcoming year.

Fanboys Anonymous: You're going to be on tour in the UK later this year. Excited? In the movie, The World's End, the characters go on this pub crawl called "The Golden Mile." Any plans on creating your own golden mile while visiting?

Antelman: Sure, I'd love to. I've never seen that movie but how can you go wrong with a pub crawl?

FA: Would you rather have a wand or light saber?

Antelman: Never was much of a Star Wars fan and haven't seen any of the Harry Potter movies. I guess I'm a horrible person.
(No, not horrible, but the Trekkies may be looking to recruit you now.)

FA: It's been over a year since Devil came out, and I heard you were working on a new album. What can fans expect? Anything different—a new sound perhaps?

Antelman: Si, we are in fact writing a new album at the moment. To be honest, I'm not sure what to expect. Turns out better that way. You shouldn't go in trying to write a certain sound or song.

FA: Do you consider yourself a Fanboy of anything?

Antelman: I'm a pretty big fan of Black Jack + Whiskey.

FA: What is the most interesting thing you have learned while touring other countries?

Antelman: Australians are nuts! In a good way.

FA: Do you have any other projects outside of Lydia right now?

Antelman: I am releasing my second album with the project I sing on called The Cinema this summer. We have been working on it for almost 2 years now off-and-on, and I'm really excited to finally get it out.

FA: What is your favorite TV show of all time?

Antelman: I think it's got to either be Breaking Bad or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

FA: Do you play any video games? If so, what are you playing right now?

Antelman: I've just recently got into playing online with a a friend of mine on the other side of the US. You can go through levels and blow shit up with someone 3,000 miles away, it's remarkable. I've never been much of a gamer but it's quite fun. We been playing Army of Two as of late.

FA: If you could sum up your entire music career with just one song, what song would you pick?

Antelman: I'm not sure if you mean a song of my own or just a song in general…but let's go with in general. I'd say off the top my head "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John.

FA: On a perfect day, you would like to be found…

Antelman: Being happy somewhere. The method doesn't matter.

I was super excited to get to ask him my questions, and I can't wait until their new album! I hope you all will check out Lydia's music, and if you are in the United Kingdom be sure to check out a show. Be looking out for my next interview with a cast member Studio C. Please take a moment to share your thoughts with Fanboys Anonymous in the comments section. What do you think of their music?

Let's all understand that this is merely a rumor at this point and, for my money, a somewhat sketchy one at that. Andrew Garfield has reportedly signed on to play everyone's favorite Wall Crawler up until 2020 for a total of four more films. We know there is a Spider-Man film scheduled for 2018, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, and it's still listed as starring Andrew Garfield in the title role. It will be directed by Marc Webb, the hack who directed the last two, but it's now reported that there will be a Spidey film in 2015 as well.

J. Jonah Jameson Spider-Man Sam RaimiWhoa. This is also after Sony stated they will have a spin-off film featuring a female villain sometime in 2017. This comes after the switch of having ASM3 in 2016 replaced by the Sinister Six film. Good grief. Sony is as bad as DC! They need to get their act together before this franchise runs off the rails completely. It's getting convoluted and messy. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see Toby Maguire's name bandied about. Maybe he wants back in in the role. Garfield is also reported to be in on a profit sharing deal with the studio.

The Daily Star is claiming Columbia Pictures is saying now that Garfield is set to reprise his role in this 2015 film. What is this? Could it be a cameo in some other spin off Spider-Man film? No one knows at this point. If there are four more films total, then they are going the Avengers' film route yet again by tying up their star for a bigger contract over multiple films outside the main series. Each main member of the Avengers' team signed nine picture deals. Of course, that happened right at the beginning since Marvel knows what they are doing and had a solid long term plan. Sony seems to be making it up as they go. Take all this with the proverbial grain of salt considering the source.

Is this is a good thing or bad thing for the franchise? Do we want more Garfield or another reboot? Sound off below.

Adam Levine Maroon 5 band poster
Maroon 5 is one of my favorite bands of the last decade. They combine pop rock with a nice dance flavor inspired by some of my other favorite artists from previous decades, including Prince. This combination of smooth tunes, a fun, fast push, and a strong amount of energy makes Maroon 5 a well rounded band. The guys seem great, too. I've watched them in interviews and have been surprised how funny and down-to-earth Adam Levine seemed. People might think he's arrogant, but he doesn't act that way in interviews. That makes me like them even more.

Well, great news for us fans, because their new Album, entitled simply V, is coming out this month! That's right! On August 29th, we'll be able to get our grubby little hands on this sucker and enjoy some new tunes. They have already released a couple of singles from it and, thus far, I like what I hear. You can pick up Maps and It Was Always You when you pre-order the album or listen to them on YouTube to check them out first, if you so desire. They sound great, there's a nice energy to them.

Maroon 5 album V
As a long time fan, it sounds to me like they are hearkening back a bit towards previous albums with this album's sound. It seems closer to  Hands All Over. I liked Overexposed, it has some great songs on it like Payphone, One More Night and Love Somebody, but I agree with some critics that say they went a little too far into poppy disco. Nothing wrong with that, but from what the band says about V, they are heading back to their basics leaning more towards Songs About Jane. This new one will be darker. Bands change and grow and swing back and forth from one sound to the next and it will be interesting to see how this one turns out.

So any fans out there? Anyone excited or pessimistic about new music from Maroon 5? Has the band peaked already? Sound off below.

While Twitch is finding themselves under the microscope lately with a potential buy-out from Google and a dubious new copyright claim process, it's a welcome time to hear about something unique coming from the service to remind us why the streaming site exists: to watch people play games. Funny enough, this reminder came from something very not-human.

Introducing Grayson Hopper. A beta fish belonging to a student of the University of Chicago. This fish is currently playing Pokémon Red and is live-streaming it for everyone to see! Sections of the tank have been designated as button inputs allowing Grayson to control his on screen character.

Fish playing Pokemon wins battle full fight
While you think this may be a completely fruitless effort, the owner states that in the 160+ hours played, he's managed to capture his first pokémon! A charmander named AAAABBK. Together they managed to defeat their rival's squirtle!

You can watch the steam running live at twitch.tv/fishplayspokemon. So far over 1.5 million people have tuned in with about 20,000 viewing at the time of this writing. The chat room ends up being just as entertaining as the fish.

Breaking news: He just saved the game! Glad I was present for this update.

Say good-bye to the rest of the day you had scheduled. How long will you be watching Grayson? Tell us in the comments below.

Sony is under fire after a class-action lawsuit has been filed against the company alleging gamers were misled by Sony's claims that the Play Station 4 game, Killzone: Shadow Fall, featured native 1080p graphics in multiplayer mode.

Sony is being sued for misleading consumers of 1080p graphics in PS4 game

The lawsuit, filed on August 5th by Douglas Ladore in the U.S. District Court in California, seeks $5 million for false advertisement and negligent misrepresentation. He claims gamers complained that the game's graphics were "blurry to the point of distraction." Ladore's lawsuit is seeking to prevent Sony from continuing to misrepresent Killzone's 1080p specifications and performance capabilities, as well as damages for consumers that were deceived by purchasing the game under false pretenses.

Stated in the suit,

2. According to Sony, Killzone was a graphically striking game set in a dystopian future that took full advantage of the PS4's advanced processing power. Sony claimed that the PS4 was so powerful that its featured Killzone video game could display "1080p multiplayer graphics, a crowning achievement in the video game industry."
3. However, after the game's release, gamers quickly noticed and complained that Killzone's multiplayer graphics were blurry to the point of distraction. The cause of this burliness went unknown until a well-respected video game website reported that Killzone's multiplayer did not actually provide 1080p graphics as advertised.

The lawsuit went on to argue that,

Sony is sued for false advertisement in PS4 game

Sony released a statement saying that Killzone's multi-player display wasn't intended to be in 1080p. Instead they opted to use a shortcut that would provide "subjectively similar" results.

Killzone: Shadow Fall was released last November, but controversy didn't begin until Digital Foundry reported that the game's multiplayer mode runs at 960x1080 at 50 frames-per-secondinstead of the intended 1920x1080 at 60 frames.

Guerrilla Games, the developer behind the Killzone games stated that they used a technique called "temporal reprojection," which combines pixels and motion vectors from lower-resolution frames to give a similar 1080p image.

Killzone producer, Poria Torkan, wrote on the official Killzone website to explain how temporal reprojection works:

In both [single player] and [multiplayer], Killzone: Shadow Fall outputs a full, unscaled 1080p image at up the 60 [frames per second]. Native is often used to indicate images that are not scaled; it is native by that definition.
In multiplayer mode, however, we use a technique called "temporal reprojection," which combines pixels and motion vectors from multiple lower-resolution frame to reconstruct a full 1080p image. If native means that every part of the pipeline is 1080p, then this technique is not native.
Temporal reprojection is a technique that tracts the position of pixels over time and predicts where they will be in future. These "history pixels" are combined with freshly rendered pixels to form a higher-resolution new frame. This is what Killzone: Shadow Fall uses in multiplayer.
On occasion the prediction fails and locally pixels become blurry, or thin vertical lines appear. However, most of the time the prediction works well and the image is identical to a normal 1080p image.

However, the lawsuit alleges that "temporal reprojection" is not the native 1080p that was advertised in the game. Sony marketed through videos, social media, and on its retail packaging that Killzone would offer 1080p graphics. "Unfortunately, Sony's marketing and on-box representations turned out to be nothing more than fiction," the lawsuit said.

Microsoft has been Sony's main competitor for over a decade. With Killzone: Shadow Fall being a PS4-exclusive game, Sony amped up its marketing strategy to showcase the console's technical capabilities as a main selling point. The suit claimed the game's success was "imperative to Sony and the ultimate success of the PS4," citing a "console war" between Sony and Microsoft that relied on screen resolution as a leading indicator of the console's performance and next-generation experience.

The full lawsuit can be read below.

Late last month, Sony finally settled a 2011 lawsuit over a Playstation Network hack that left the service down for three weeks, causing users' personal information to be vulnerable to theft.

Do you think Sony should be held accountable for their false advertisement? Let us know in the comments below!

"Man, time travel gives me a headache" - Robert Drake (Iceman).

It seems that for the X-Men, if they cant get 'round it, can't go over, can't get under it, then just grin and bear it.

Well, it just keeps coming back for more. In issue 29 of All New X-Men, the future Brotherhood of Mutants has finally come back to finish what they started in the Battle of the Atom.

This has been teased and planned out for a while now and it seems nice to finally be getting back on track with this lingering story line.

The plot details nicely round out the key players from the future mutants and helps satisfy some questions left over from last years big X- event. However, I do feel stuck in a loop with young Xavier's never ending message to the future system.

It is also nice to see the character development of Warren (Angel) and Laura (X-23) by the issues end. This is quite intriguing. So to see them in next issue, along with the cover tease for issue 30, does expand the horizons again for the large ensemble that the writer, Brian Bendis, has to play with.

When you take into account the recent comments Bendis has made about the continued progress for stories in the X- universe through next year, it is evident that we can expect to see a lot more development for both characters and stories from this side of Marvel.

A comic is much more than just story, but the combination of words and pictures. So, what about the art for All New X-Men?

As evident from the images in this article, the art continues to show great pencil work from Stuart Immonen. The consistency and clean lines he brings to this series helps make it a main stay for the X-Universe books. The collaboration Immonen has with Bendis continues to support the story continuity as well.

Marta Gracia's color hues bring drama to any battle.
However, I find the real sticking point with the art in this series is the combination of inker, art and colors. Wade von Grawbadger and Marte Gracia both bring excellent elements to All New X-Men in their own rights. The inking by von Grawbadger beautifully enhances the art of Immonen and Gracia's colors continue to be some of the best at Marvel. In issue 29, Gracia provides weight, character, and mood to the final story by using blues, purples and reds to subtly pull the direction of the page or panel. By using colors from similar positions in the spectrum, Gracia helps mold the speed of the story while still maintaining important visual triggers for the reader to react to with the appropriate emotion.

All in all, All New X-Men 29 continues a strong run of art and story. This series is a consistent best seller for Marvel and the artists on point strut their stuff throughout. Long may it continue and the nasty rumors of X-Men cancellations finally be put to rest.

While I may a bit behind on reviewing this issue (I live on the other side of the world and it gets mailed from New York) with All New X-Men #30 out next week, let me know what you think.

Do you like the way the story is going? Does it need a pick me up?

With X-Men editor Mike Marts and Brian Bendis now beginning to talk up future X-Men related events, what do you hope could be in store for us?

The Monster Squad Remake Film is Dead!

Posted by Unknown - Thursday, August 7, 2014

monster squad remake 80s films nostalgia
The 80s was the best decade ever for pop culture media. The fact that we've had a bunch of remakes from some of the best films of the decade occur recently is proof of its enduring popularity. The latest one that was set to be unleashed upon the 21st Century is The Monster Squad. When I first heard about this I was excited because it is one of my favorite comedy horror films of all time.

The problem is, this intended remake is now dead and buried, much like the Frankenstein's Monster that starred in the original. Platinum Dunes' producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller recently announced they are no longer working on remaking The Monster Squad for a new generation. Bummer. Yet this same company is planning another entry in The Friday the 13th series. I like that franchise but the remake from '09 was crap.

So why the change in plans? I have no idea. Form and Fuller didn't say. I'm disappointed in this news because I love The Monster Squad so much. It's a fun, light hearted homage to the classic monsters of Universal's run during the 30s, 40s, and 50s. It was a smart film too, combining the comedy and horror well while updating the classic stories for an 80s audience. I love the interactions with the characters. The cop father and his partner were great together, they had a smooth chemistry and the overall simplicity of the story was well done; a bunch of kids have to band together to stop monsters invading their town. That's it. It was pitched as Ghostbusters meets The Goonies and fits that well.

What made it so fun for me as a kid was the idea that these kids, who created their club of monster fighters, were just like me. I imagined myself in their place, battling with Dracula and kicking Wolfman in the nards. They were also smart enough to place Frankenstein in the role of a tragic hero, since that was present in the original novel, and he becomes a very sympathetic character in this film. This is a fine movie and could have been a great remake.

Wolfman vs Dracula vs Mummy vs Black Lagoon Creature

I suppose maybe Platinum Dunes believes today's world is not the right environment for this kind of story anymore because it's not dark and gritty enough. The Monster Squad did not do well at the box office upon release, but like many cult films, it found a home on cable outlets and home video, building an audience of fans all over the world. Maybe once Universal's plans to reboot their stable of monsters come into being this remake will come back into focus.

So was anyone looking forward to this? Was anyone even aware of the possibility of a Monster Squad remake? Sound off below.

Nerdy current events in geek culture for this week

MOVIES

DC Has 10 Movie Release Dates.

My take: This is hot off the press today, so I don't have a lot of details. DC seems to be calling everyone's bluff and now has movie release dates booked through 2020. Launching into a series of films was something Marvel was able to do only after the huge success of Iron Man, and DC hasn't had that yet. Man of Steel was met with a lukewarm reaction and only the hype of its so-called sequel is driving their plans forward. If this movie doesn't turn things around, DC/WB will be stuck with a movie franchise in need of another reboot before it's even truly begun. Speaking of which....

Sony Announces Female Superhero Movies.

My take: Over at Marvel, they're getting a lot of heat for taking so long to feature Black Widow in her own film. With excuse after excuse, Sony is jumping on the bandwagon of public shaming. They technically have access to other Spider-related characters, such as Spider-Woman and The Black Cat, and have announced their intentions to give them their own movies. This is bad news for fans of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise as their plans continue to zig-zag on just which direction to go. That being said, I'm far more excited for female-lead films than I am for The Sinister Six and Venom.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a Hit.

My take: Most of us saw this coming a mile away. Without the same story restrictions as other Marvel films, this was destined to be a fun movie. It has passed $100million and has an approximate 44% female fanbase.

The Fantastic Four is in Pre-Production.

My take: Sony is already planning a sequel to this upcoming reboot and I couldn't be less excited. As these movies continue to be made by studios that aren't Marvel, we're losing out on some great stories and character interaction. Although I'm curious to see what they've done, these movies will always feel limited when compared to the full world that Marvel is creating.

TELEVISION

The Office Movie.

My take: Ricky Gervais will be doing a movie follow-up to the original UK series set 15 years after the final, special episode. The fans of the UK and US versions are split, but I certainly appreciate the UK series, both for it being the original series, and also for knowing when to quit.

Scream TV?

My take: I wasn't aware this film franchise was coming to MTV as a series, but I'm sure not interested. I liked the first film and hated every sequel they offered. Is this series going to be tongue-in-cheek comedy or is MTV looking for its own True Detective?

Young Justice / Teen Titans Go! Crossover?

My take: With DC constantly playing with alternate universe ideas with their huge push on the multiverse, I guess it should come as no surprise when it creeps into animation. I'm not sure exactly how they're going to pull off a believable mix of the drama-focused teens with the comedy-focused teens but it will certainly get my eyeballs.

VIDEO GAMES

Destiny Limited Edition Pre-Order Sold Out.

My take: Copies are showing up on Ebay for up to $1000, and this game had better deliver on the hype. After the huge sales numbers for recent games like Titanfall and Grand Theft Auto V, I think video game release days will soon make movie premieres seem like childish events. I think this game looks way too much like Mass Effect, so it had better have some pretty unique weapons, gameplay, and backstory to impress this old curmudgeon.

Grand Theft Auto V Sales Continue.

My take: Speaking of which, this game just passed 34 million copies and it hasn't even come out on PC, PS4 or Xbox One yet. It came out last September and keeps on selling. The sales numbers, if you do the math, surpass those of the biggest movie blockbusters: Easily in the billion dollar zone after less than a year. As awesome as the recent rash of superhero movies has been, someone (possibly DC) is going to take over this industry soon in that market. If Marvel owns the theatres, DC should look at owning the console wars.

CELEBRITIES

In a campaign I can really get behind, visit the petition page to have Weird Al Yankovic headline the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show. His recent album Mandatory Fun hit #1 on Billboard and he deserves this time in the spotlight. He's gained popularity in recent years, and you may not realize he's been doing this since the early '80s. I have several of his original cassette tapes, because yes, I'm that old.

Batman Superman and Wonder Woman DC Trinity
The latest on what could either be a total mess or a revelation in the genre of superhero films is that Batman's sidekick, Robin, will be featured in the film. Ugh. Really? Let's review the total number of DC characters they are shoving in here, shall we? We have the two mentioned in the title itself, Batman and Superman. That alone annoys me as this was initially supposed to be a sequel to Man of Steel, but that's the least of this film's problems.

In addition to the two biggest DC characters, we also have Wonder Woman, Cyborg, a rumored Aquaman, and now (maybe) Robin. Plus, we have two actors, Callan Mulvey and Scoot McNairy, in unspecified roles. Rumor has it that this guy, Scoot (what the hell kind of name is that anyway?), could possibly play Joker. Wow. I don't even know where to start with this. Obviously, if they are basing this film partly on The Dark Knight Returns, then the Joker makes sense. Isn't this too soon?

How many characters are too many? And why call it Dawn of Justice when it is looking more and more like a full fledged Justice League film? DC attempting to catch up with Marvel and the massive success of their Avengers film is somewhat pathetic. It's like they are late to a birthday party, but forgot to bring a present. "Oh, what? Sorry. Let me go grab something real quick. Sorry!" It's too late DC. Marvel is so far ahead that it might be impossible to catch them.

sexy comic book movie actors ben affleck and henry cavill shirtless picsIt looks like DC is throwing everything they possibly can at the problem and hoping it works. This latest rumor about Robin is intriguing based on the information garnered thus far.

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILER BELOW IN RED

It is speculated that The Joker has killed Robin at this point, creating a broken down, gritty and despondent Batman. Supposedly, there is a shot of Robin's tattered cloak, so the assumption is that Batman has already lost a Boy Wonder from his team by the start of the film. Could that be Jason Todd, as what happens in the hcomics? If so, perhaps Dick Grayson appears in the film as Nightwing later on.

There is also a rumor that Affleck has significant gray hair to make him look more mature than his 42 years. I'm fine with that. In fact, it's what needs to happen if they are taking a page from The Dark Knight Returns. However, I still think Ben Affleck is too handsome for that interpretation, so they'll have to dirty him up some more. I also think there are too damn many characters in this film. "But it's only a cameo, Will! Settle down." So what? What's the point of a cameo if the character doesn't have a reason for being in the film and doesn't do anything significant? It only clutters the film up.

Will Zack Snyder make it work? Will Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice be a total cluster fuck or will all the pieces fit where they need to? Sound off below.

Watching movies is a favorite past time of mine, go figure. I've seen tens of thousands, own around 1,500 DVDs, 250+ Blu-ray discs and also subscribe to Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, and Netflix. So suffice it to say I have access to a ton of media. Out of all these, which film is my most watched and why? It's This is Spinal Tap, the most watchable film ever. I've seen it at least 75 times.

sexy rock and roll artists this is spinal tap film
Why does it have so much replayability? Part of it is the length; it clocks in around 82 minutes. Another part of it is the music. Think about how many times you've listened to your favorite song compared to how many times you have seen your favorite film. If you are like me, the gap is extreme. Songs are way shorter, get better when you don't listen to them for a while, and are hopefully invigorating while you listen.

Spinal Tap is no different. The humor the songs invoke also adds to the replay value, and, in fact, the whole damn movie is hilarious. I would say most of my most-watched films all have humorous elements involved. With This Is Spinal Tap, there are funny bits galore. This is similar to A Christmas Story, another film that never gets old. There are so many great little scenes (and with Christmas Story, subplots) that ring true on a comedic level, it's fun to relive them over and over; there are also great quotes:
spinal tap film goes to eleven, starring christopher guest
  • The Stonehenge scene. "These go to eleven."
  • Nigel's freak out with the food backstage. "None more black."
  • The band getting lost on the way to the stage (and this has happened to many real life bands). "... from Spinal Tap, currently residing in the 'Where are they now?' file... (and this happens on a local radio station where they are in town laying a gig that very night!).
  • Their drummer always meeting a violent end.
  • Derek Smalls getting trapped in the egg shell thing.
  • "This is called Lick my Love Pump."
  • No one showing up for their album signing.
  • The aluminum foil covered cucumber.

It goes on and on, and like A Christmas Story, many of these scenes and their subtleties reward a viewer when watching multiple times.

Another thing that makes it so great is the fact so many real-life bands were stunned the first time they watched the film. George Lynch, a member of rock band Dokken, is said to have exclaimed, "That's us! How did they make a movie about us?" Steven Tyler of Aerosmith is said to have found nothing funny about it because it hit so close to home for the legendary rocker.

For me, it's funny of course, but it also has a great, heartfelt story underneath it all, one about friendship and a love for music and the hardships of creativity. Nigel and David's relationship is so fantastic and really tugs at the heart strings. They started the band together, have been best mates for decades, and knew each other too well. When Nigel storms off the stage, smashing his guitar in frustration, you understand the reasons why, but it's painful to see them split up.

When they meet once again backstage before their final show of the tour, after the remaining band members have decided to call it quits, the look in David's eyes when he looks at Nigel is so powerful. Michael McKean does an amazing job of acting with this eyes, and what you see there—hurt from Nigel's betrayal, despair because of the state of the band, and perhaps guilt over his girlfriend's antics that caused the rift in the first place—is so powerful it cannot be ignored.

This is Spinal Tap is my 11th favorite film and it will always be my 11th favorite film. I also own all their real albums and listen to them. Am I obsessed? Are their other Tap heads out there? Sound off below.
