Top 15 Books for Young Adults/Teens Demographic

Posted by Unknown - Saturday, February 22, 2014

Over the past few years, sales in "teen fiction" have gone through the roof because, let's face it, it's not only teenagers reading it anymore. In fact, children's and young adult books are the fastest-growing publishing categories, with fantasy/science fiction reigning in as the readers' favorite genre.

Check out my list of my favorite young adult/teen novels below (ranked in no particular order):

15) Unearthly, Cynthia Hand

Cynthia Hand's best selling hybrid angel book Unearthly
Published: January 4, 2011
Series: Unearthly

"In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees…

Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy. Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side. As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?"
- Goodreads

Rating: 4/5. Beautifully written, moving, and romantic. Cynthia Hand delves into the world of angels in such vivid detail it genuinely feels like you're there.

14) Before I Fall, Lauren Oliver

Before I Fall Lauren Oliver's best seller
Published: February 14, 2010

"What if you only had one day to live? What would you do? Who would you kiss? And how far would you go to save your own life? Samantha Kingston has it all: the world's hottest boyfriend, a group of amazing best friends, and first pick of everything at Thomas Jefferson High from the best table in the cafeteria to the most wanted parking spot. Friday, February 12th should just be another perfect day, but it turns out to be her last. However, she gets a second chance—well, seven actually—to relive her last day. During one life-changing week, she will learn the secrets behind her death and discover what she is truly losing." -Goodreads

Rating: 4/5. Sad and beautiful, but above all, honest. Lauren Oliver has an incredible gift with words and imagery that is guaranteed to take you on a roller-coaster ride of emotions.

13) Vampire Academy, Richelle Mead

Vampire Academy a best selling vampire novel by Richelle Mead
Published: August 16, 2007
Series: Vampire Academy

"St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger…. Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever." - Goodreads

Rating: 4/5. I know the name may make it sound like just another book about a school of supernatural students, but it genuinely is a good read packed full of strong, engaging characters who are bound to leave an impression; danger; and even a hint of romance. You'll struggle to put this book down.

12) The Maze Runner, James Dashner

The Maze Runner a fast paced adventure book by James Dashner
Published: October 6, 2009
Series: The Maze Runner

"When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he's not alone. When the lift's doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade-a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls. Just like Thomas, the Gladers don't know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they've closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift. Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up-the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers. Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind." - Goodreads

Rating: 4/5. The Maze Runner is sure to have you on the edge of your seat. The plot is fast paced, full of suspense, and absolutely rammed with twists and turns to keep you guessing.

11) Divergent, Veronica Roth

Divergent a dystopian novel that will keep you hooked
Published: April 25th 2011
Series: Divergent

"In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue--Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is--she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, Tris also learns that her secret might help her save the ones she loves…or it might destroy her." - Goodreads

Rating: 4.5/5. There seems to be quite a lot of hype behind this book, so I decided to give it a read to see if it really was all the rage. I was not disappointed. I absolutely loved the concept behind this story; the idea of the factions had me completely engaged. For once this was actually a book where the main character isn't completely wrapped up in some love triangle but instead is battling for what's really important. That being said, there is still your fair share of romance.

10) The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Cassandra Clare

City Of Bones a dark fantasy story by Cassandra Clare
Published: March 27th 2007
Series: The Mortal Instruments

"When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder—much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy? This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know…" - Goodreads

Rating: 4/5. This book completely draws you in right from the very first page. You get sucked into Clary's mysterious world of monsters, and it genuinely makes you feel like you're in an entirely different world.

9) Looking for Alaska, John Green

Looking For Alaska an amazing book by John Green
Published: 2005

"Before. Before. Miles 'Pudge' Halter's whole existence has been one big nonevent, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave the "Great Perhaps" (François Rabelais, poet) even more. Then he heads off to the sometimes crazy, possibly unstable, and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed-up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young, who is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart.

After. Nothing is ever the same." - Goodreads

Rating: 5/5. I absolutely adored this book. It was funny, thought provoking, emotional, and overall wonderfully written. John Green has a unique ability to make you care about his characters, which makes his plot twists even more devastating.

8) Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment, James Patterson

Maximum Ride a thriller series by James Patterson
Published: April 11, 2005
Series: Maximum Ride

"Six unforgettable kids—with no families, no homes—are running for their lives. Max Ride and her best friends have the ability to fly. And that's just the beginning of their amazing powers. But they don't know where they come from, who's hunting them, why they are different from all other humans…and if they're meant to save mankind—or destroy it." - Goodreads

Rating: 4/5. I found the Maximum Ride series extremely thrilling. Max is a strong character who grows up far too quickly due to having to look after everyone. Her and her friends' story is heartbreaking, and you find yourself on the edge of your seat willing for them to succeed. Once you start reading this book, you just can't stop!

7) Blue Bloods, Melissa de la Cruz

Blue Bloods a gripping enchanting vampire tale by Melissa de la Cruz
Published: March 27, 2007
Series: Blue Bloods

"When the Mayflower set sail in 1620, it carried on board the men and women who would shape America: Miles Standish; John Alden; Constance Hopkins. But some among the Pilgrims were not pure of heart; they were not escaping religious persecution. Indeed, they were not even human. They were vampires. The vampires assimilated quickly into the New World. Rising to levels of enormous power, wealth, and influence, they were the celebrated blue bloods of American society. The Blue Bloods vowed that their immortal status would remain a closely guarded secret. And they kept that secret for centuries. But now, in New York City, the secret is seeping out. Schuyler Van Alen is a sophomore at a prestigious private school. She prefers baggy, vintage clothes instead of the Prada and pearls worn by her classmates, and she lives with her reclusive grandmother in a dilapated mansion. Schuyler is a loner…and happy that way. Suddenly, when she turns fifteen, there is a visible mosaic of blue veins on her arm. She starts to crave raw food and she is having flashbacks to ancient times. Then a popular girl from her school is found dead…drained of all her blood. Schuyler doesn't know what to think, but she wants to find out the secrets the Blue Bloods are keeping. But is she herself in danger?" - Goodreads

Rating: 4/5. You're probably thinking that this is just another book about some vampire love triangle, but I genuinely enjoyed the spin Melissa de la Cruz puts on vampires. She packs in many twists and turns that keep you turning the pages and wanting more. Luckily, there are four books in this series!

6) Evermore, Alyson Noel

Evermore an enchanting mystical novel by Alyson Noel
Published: February 2009
Series: The Immortals

"After a horrible accident claims the lives of her family, sixteen-year-old Ever Bloom can see people's auras, hear their thoughts, and know someone's entire life story by touching them. Going out of her way to avoid human contact to suppress her abilities, she has been branded a freak at her new high school—but everything changes when she meets Damen Auguste. Damen is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy. He's the only one who can silence the noise and random energy in her head - wielding a magic so intense, it's as though he can peer straight into her soul. As Ever is drawn deeper into his enticing world of secrets and mystery, she's left with more questions than answers. And she has no idea just who he really is - or what he is. The only thing she knows to be true is that she's falling deeply and helplessly in love with him."
- Goodreads

Rating: 4.5/5. In this book we follow the life of Ever Bloom, a heartbreaking tale full of loss and pain. Her character and story are both so beautifully written that you soon become sucked into her world, which is full of excitement and adventure. A definite must read for lovers of this genre.

5) Beautiful Creatures, Kami Garcia

Beautiful Creatures a magical dark book by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
Published: December 1, 2009
Series: Caster Chronicles

"There were no surprises in Gatlin County. We were pretty much the epicenter of the middle of nowhere. At least, that's what I thought. Turns out, I couldn't have been more wrong. There was a curse. There was a girl. And in the end, there was a grave.

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever. Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them. In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything." - Goodreads

Rating: 4/5. So we all know that the film version of this book was a complete and utter fail. It was boring, lacked interesting characters, and was just generally dull. The book, however, is anything but; the versions of Lena and Ethan are funny and romantic, and their story is full of hope and terror. It seriously draws you in.

4) The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

The Fault In Our Stars a heartbreaking beautiful novel by John Green
Published: January 10, 2012

"Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten."
- Goodreads

Rating: 5/5. I dare you not to cry at this book, I honestly do. This book broke my heart into so many pieces I don't think I'll ever recover. There's not a single part of this book that I did not completely love, I fell in love with Hazel-Grace and Augustus Waters and their hopeful relationship, which made the ending of the book even more soul crushing. If you haven't already read this book, get to it—that's if you don't mind soaking the pages in tears.

3) Hush, Hush, Becca Fitzpatrick

Hush Hush an out of this world tale about angels and romance by Becca Fitzpatrick
Published: October 13, 2009
Series: Hush, Hush

"Romance was not part of Nora Grey's plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgement. But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is and seems to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel. For she is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen—and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost Nora her life."
- Goodreads

Rating: 4/5. Hush, Hush is dark, moving, and deeply romantic. Yes, you've probably read a million books that sound like this one before: brown-haired, brown-eyed nerdy girl meets and falls in love with a beautiful supernatural stranger. Yet this book has many twists and turns that keep you guessing, and I really loved Patch's back story and found it genuinely interesting.

2) The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games a futuristic dark novel by Suzanne Collins
Published: September 14, 2008
Series: The Hunger Games

"In a dark vision of the near future, a terrifying reality TV show is taking place. Twelve boys and twelve girls are forced to appear in a live event called the Hunger Games. There is only one rule: kill or be killed. When sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen steps forward to take her sister's place in the games, she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature." - Goodreads

Rating: 5/5. If you haven't heard about The Hunger Games yet, then you've probably been living in a cave. It stormed into the cinemas last year and captured everyone's attention instantly. If you loved the film, I can guarantee that you'll love the books ten times more. As you will all know, films tend to skip massive parts of plot to try and cram it into a two-hour cinema slot, and The Hunger Games is no exception. Katniss' story is even more gripping and hopeful on paper. Once I started reading this book I just wanted more and more and more!

1) Shiver, Maggie Striefvater

Shiver a romantic delightful tale about werewolves and love by Maggie Striefvater
Published: August 1, 2009
Series: The Wolves of Mercy Falls

"For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human…until the cold makes him shift back again. Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever." - Goodreads

Rating: 5/5. Everything about this book was beautiful, from the way their world was described to every single character in the book. Sam and Grace's relationship draws you in, and you find yourself rooting for them to be together by any means possible. Even the secondary characters grip you. Many people have slated this book and said it bared a huge similarity to Stephanie Meyer's Twilight, but I genuinely failed to see any similarities. Yes there's the obvious girl with the ordinary life meets an attractive, exciting stranger plot, but that's it. If you love this book, don't forget to look out for the standalone follow-up novel Sinner following Cole and Isabel's story.

Saturday, February 22, in Liverpool, England, local fans of AMC's The Walking Dead were in for a real treat as The Governor himself, actor David Morrisey, dropped into Forbidden Planet to sign books for a charity fundraising event!

"Well, that went swimmingly..."
Actor, director, producer, and screenwriter Morrissey is a native of our northwestern city, born, raised and finding his dramatic roots in Liverpool. To be a Walking Dead fan from Liverpool is a huge reason to be proud of Morrissey, so fans were keen to make the Guv feel at home.

One such fellow Scouser was local doorman Delroy Naif, who had to attend Forbidden Planet alone, although his girlfriend had been looking forward to meeting her idol. So Del paid to meet Woodbury's finest one-eyed psycho in honor of his lady and found Morrissey to be what we call an absolute legend.

Governor David Morrissey with fan Delroy Naif.
Morrissey was more than obliging to engage in conversation with Del, just as he did with the excited little boy before him, and not because Del's a doorman and knows how to manhandle people. He also took a photo with Del to take home to his lady and engaged in conversation about what exactly brought him back home.

Proving that the man behind the now-deceased Governor, the best thing to happen to The Walking Dead since sliced walkers (nudge-nudge wink-wink), is as far removed from the tyrant as you could imagine, Morrissey is back home on a fundraising mission to provide a minibus for the Friends of the Observatory School, a project dedicated to raising funds for activities to broaden the horizons of children with special needs such as disabilities, social adversities, and emotional and behavioral problems.

Hey guys, whatcha doin' today? Nice Saturday so far, right? I don't suppose you heard that Ragnarok is coming? In Nordic, that's also known as the "Twilight of the Gods," aka the end of everything. Yep, that's today, Saturday 22nd of February!

Thor Allfather of Asgard Odin during the apocalypse in Marvel's Fear Itself

The Allfather only knows why we haven't heard anything up until now. Maybe because we're too busy here in the United Kingdom stirring up a frenzy of news about the weather, the Olympics in Sochi, and football's latest, but according to some, the Viking calendar warns us that today is when the world shall end. Ye Gods!

Legend has it that when there are three freezing winters, with no summers in between, the world will turn its toes up. Down in York, England, the annual Viking Festival has just reached its finale at the Jorvik Viking Centre, where director Danielle Daglan claims that the god Heimdallr (yes, that particular guardian of the Bifrost), blew the Gjallerhorn last year, signalling the onset of Ragnarok.

Heimdall as portrayed by Idris Elba in Thor movies protects Asgard in Marvel's Siege

All gods, including the Allfather Odin, Thor, Loki and Freja, the goddess of love, will go to war. After the battle, the world will "sink beneath the waves," and none shall survive but for two humans. Those two, Liv and Livtrasir (Life and Lust) will come up from the underworld to repopulate Earth. Sounds exhausting.

So, fans of Marvel's Thor, and the rest of those familiar with such world-ending tales as Fear Itself, what do you make of this surprise party? I mean, if this was signaled last year, that actually means that the Viking calendar wasn't so different from the Mayan calendar. Two "end of the world" predictions from two entirely different races is a little disconcerting.

Also, take a look at the events of the past few years: summers full of terrible freak weather, flooding worldwide, civil war, mass protesting. Right now, a great deal of England's countryside and many towns are submerged in freezing cold waters after being battered by a solid month of heavily destructive storms.

At least it's not all bad…

"I get around-round-get-around-I-get-around..."
Don't forget that the United States is riding the icy tail of a polar vortex. Even if you don't believe in all this, the timing is still good enough to send a chill down your spine. It would be cool to see the residents of Asgard burning down the house, though, right?

Going toe-to-toe with the likes of David Letterman, Fallon has some tough shoes to fill. I for one have always been a fan of Fallon, stemming from his Saturday Night Live days. He brings a younger and fresher talk show to an hour that was dominated by older gentlemen such as Leno and Letterman. Now with the 11:30 block dominated by the likes of Kimmel (ABC), Fallon (NBC), Colbert (Comedy Central), and Conan (TBS), it's only a matter of time before we see CBS contemplating the renewal of Mr. Letterman's contract. Despite the group he is now competing against for ratings, however, Fallon still had to make an impact for his first week as host. The question is, did he hold up his end?

Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon pose for a selfie.Debuting with a heartfelt and emotional monologue of being awestruck that he had made it to The Tonight Show, he followed that with an awesome gag of winning the bet for $100 that he'd one day be the host. Out walked Robert De niro, Lady Gaga, Seth Rogen, Mariah Carey, and many other stars who each paid the $100 to Jimmy for making it. This was all rounded off by Colbert dumping a bucket of pennies on him and screaming, "Welcome to 11:30 bitch!" The beginning gave me chills and definitely set the tone for how the show was going to run from here on out. Jimmy, still bringing the sketch humor that worked so well for him on Late Night, rolled into a skit with himself and first guest of the show Will Smith dancing to "The Evolution of Hip Hop." Following that hilarious parody he took the audience and musical guests U2 to the roof and had them perform their latest hit as the sun set. All in all, I'd say Fallon struck gold with his first show. I was not personally a fan of Leno, so it was refreshing to see Fallon take the reigns and score such a big win.

He went on to fill the week with celebrity guests such as Jerry Seinfeld, Kristen Wiig, Bradley Cooper, Will Ferrell, Michelle Obama, and good friend Justin Timberlake. He played some games, performed some skits, and even revived some of his older material from Late Night such as "Hashtag" with Jonah Hill replacing Justin Timberlake. He also had musical guests Lady Gaga, Tim McGraw, Arcade Fire, and double-duty-pulling Justin Timberlake. All in all I would say Fallon had a pretty awesome week, taking the hosting duty from former late-night talk show giant Leno and knocking it out of the park with a week full of surprises and statement making. Personally, Fallon has hooked me, and I look forward to future episodes. With the show now filming in New York, who knows—perhaps The Dace Man may make an appearance! Only thing left to ask is, how will Late Night do under the guidance of Seth Myers? We'll certainly find out next week.

Zombie survivalists and enthusiasts! For those of you who haven't quite caught the news, we are due for another great year of zombie bites and scratches, straight from the mind of bestselling author Max Brooks. He and artist Raulo Caceres have come together to create a zombie baby that's an amalgamation of zombie and vampire fiction. This new sub-genre's name? Zombies vs. vampires!

This proliferation of sub-genres might seem unnecessary, but with such an awesome and—to quote avatarpress.com—"Violently original graphic novel" containing another frightful fan favorite monster and the art of Raulo Caceres, I'm not holding my breath until it comes out in hopes that it will be good. That's because I expect it to be better than good. Free Extinction Parade Comic DownloadsExtinction Parade has collected the first five comics along with a gargantuan, intense zombies vs. vampires cover gallery.

Just by reading the description you can see what I'm talking about. In this comic novel, both zombies and vampires plague humanity, but they can only do so for so long before it becomes apparent to the vampires that both groups' existence is driving the human population into the pit—literally. Like any nation of people... or undead people (whatever), once it becomes evident that their food source is in danger, it's time to go to war.

Free Extinction Parade AccessoriesTo my mind, the best part of the whole theme is the ratio of vampires to zombies. The zombie plague has spread far and wide, as plagues do, until much of the human race has been consumed by it, and their numbers are overwhelming. That ratio alone has caused me to wonder: What exactly happens when a vampire is bitten by a zombie? Is a new species created, or is there no blood coursing and therefore no issue? I don't have the slightest idea, but it certainly opens up possibilities. The series promises that it "further examines Brooks' fascination with the lethal races of the undead and brings his unique voice to comics at a time when horror fiction is at an all-time high in popularity."

Extinction Parade will release the trade paperback very soon, but until then, it can be pre-ordered at your local comic shop and on Amazon or BN.com.

Sir Patrick Stewart Wrongly Outed as Gay After Ellen Page LGBT Speech

Posted by Fellonius Munch - Friday, February 21, 2014

Probably because it was a slow week for news other than the weather, Sir Patrick Stewart was incorrectly outed as gay by British newspaper The Guardian after he congratulated Ellen Page on her speech at the LGBT human rights convention last weekend!

Classical actor Sir Patrick Stewart outed for congratulating Ellen Page's LGBT speech
Sir Patrick Stewart comes out... of the bath!
The legendary actor of theater, television, and film, who became a domestic name in the late '80s with Star Trek: The Next Generation, was glad to take to Twitter to explain himself:

Star Trek and X-Men star Sir Patrick Stewart outed as gay by The Guardian newspaper
And they prove their masculinity with drunken one-armed pushups.
Sir Patrick Stewart's fantastic reaction toward The Guardian's random assumption continued with him stating that it was a nice change from people assuming he was dead, AGAIN! After all, I suppose it's an easy mistake to make when investigative journalism comes down to pulling an educated guess out of your arse.

Stewart is a strong advocate for human rights, aside from being the coolest knight in the kingdom. The fact that he's been outed as gay because he hangs out with fellow actors—such as his best friend, the sometimes Liberace-level gay Sir Ian McKellen (the coolest knight in gaydom?)—and believes in equality for LGBT people doesn't mean that he married his wife last September for shits and giggles.

His final tweet on the matter put the icing on the cake...
The Guardian later corrected their mistake but did not confirm whether they were indeed mistaking Stewart with McKellen, who is openly gay, or just blindly fumbling for skeletons around their own closet.

Muppet sandwich action with Stewart & McKellen (sounds like a TV special).
Sound off, Fanboys! Not that we needed to clarify Sir Patrick Stewart's awesomeness anymore, but what do you make of this "mistake?" Comments below and thanks again for reading.

"Ever had an obsession?" film director Damian S. Simankowicz asks. "Something you started for fun, but then it became more and more interesting to you? You'd wake up and think about it. When you slept, you dreamt about it. And then maybe it started talking to you…"

Damian states, for the record, that he's perfectly sane. At least he thinks. But there's this cybernetic girl that won't leave him alone, not until he can at least get her a blaster and a starfighter. Yeah well, get in line, lady. Me and a few generations of '80s kids, Star Wars fans, and Star Trek fans (to name a few) were here first, so it looks like the writer and artist of brand-new indie digital comic Sage: Escape is stuck with you!

Film and music video director Damian Simankowicz writes and illustrates sci-fi indie digital comic

Sage: Escape, at least its debut issue, is quite easy to describe, but that doesn't make it any less imaginative than any die-hard sci-fi fan could ever expect. The year is 3042, and as Friendly Corp commits genocide (aggressively taking back real estate from its own clients), sending out their assassins "The Salesmen" to do their wetwork, one of their new experiments has gone missing.

Cybernetically enhanced futuristic comic character of Sage: Escape reminiscent of Aeon Flux
Sage, a cybernetically enhanced young woman, is loose on the streets of the famous floating Cray City, a satellite orbiting Mars that is owned by a wealthy family, much like a future Illuminati. Suffering partial amnesia where her AI programming isn't thinking for her, Sage only knows that she must uncover the truth behind the mass slaughters. Tearing her way through Cray City, avoiding the automated police drones and criminal aliens and cyborgs, her adventure really begins when she is forced into a battle of wits with bounty hunter Raamon, who is being paid to take her back to the corporation.

Damian brings not only his own knowledge of cinematic code and convention from the film industry he has been a part of for so long, but also a huge love of the sci-fi genre and all the sub-genres that lie in its looming shadow.

Starting up Sage: Escape, he not only wrote it but also illustrated it himself, like a man possessed. Upon originally reviewing the first issue that he sent me, I was a total bastard and pointed out some inconsistencies, mostly regarding the artwork. Less than a day later, I got another email from him. Damian humbly stated that my observation confirmed his belief, and then offered me a thoroughly improved version of the issue that he'd immediately gone to work on after reading me. Here is a man who the big comic brands should be talking to. Damian S. Simankowicz is indeed a creative workhorse.

Sage: Escape already circulating at comic conventions
And let's face it, if Darth Maul's a fan, who will argue?
Damian's love of sci-fi is clear. Here is a universe that is completely original, yet familiar by reference. There's a bit of Star Wars and Star Trek, Robocop and Total Recall. The human cultures of the future take today's society and politics into consideration while flipping the coin on what life in the next millenia could be.

On one hand, the corporations of the future, weaponizing people with cybernetics, have automated the police state with drones. This has rendered human law—as it is today—redundant in the eyes of big business. With today's sociopolitical and liberal movements fighting the likes of Wall Street and riots spreading worldwide in the face of unpunished corporate crime, this could become reality.

On the other hand, the story is centered around the plight of Natura, an Australian city massacred by Friendly Corp, where Sage is originally from. The Crays, the most wealthy human family in the universe, are descended from African-Americans. It all makes me think Farscape meets The Fifth Element. It's a world "shared" by self-appointed royalty, cyborgs, aliens, farmers, and miners. I like this dynamic!

Sage: Escape's half cyborg character stalked by death
Like the solo outings of many of our favorite comic book characters, this first issue reads Sage's mind and states the obvious, mostly, through an inner monologue. I get the sense it's not just Sage thinking to herself, either. She's mostly cybernetic and searching to reconnect with her stolen humanity. Even part of her mind is cybernetic, and the way she reads on the page, it really is as though her programming is doing the thinking for her. She constantly calculates her next move, like an assassin does.

Aside from the artwork, which can only improve as Damian has already shown, I thought the dialogue between characters started out a little empty. Sage: Escape's debut focuses more on telling a straight story rather than endearing us to any characters. Take into consideration the fact that we've yet to become accustomed to any "Sageisms"; she's new, and like any other writer, Damian will learn over time. This is a colorful world full of characters who have yet to find their way, and I think Damian has a fight to make something special here. Sage: Escape definitely has the potential!

Q&A with Damian S. Simankowicz

Fanboys Anonymous exclusively interviews comic creator and film director Damian S. Simankowicz

1. Where did Sage (the character and the story) come from? You mentioned to me recently that there's quite a close bond between you and this unique character that's been "waiting to be brought to life?"

She’s been around for years. Whenever another project would get stuck, I’d write Sage plots instead. When I’d come home after a big night out and still be wired, I’d turn up the stereo and draw segments of her universe. An early story had a male warrior (Nihil) in the lead role, but a teenage girl worked better. I took some visual traits from a coworker buddy, and hey presto! Sage just arrived. Her peers have been around for while too. For example, the villain Groth (see Mars Gambit 2 &3), I’ve been drawing him since I was in high school—and that was a long time ago!

2. Have you always been a comic fan? How long for, and what are your favorite characters and story arcs?

Yeah, I always loved comics. My dad would buy every Batman and Superman issue, plus all the DC crossovers. As I grew up I got into Death’s Head 2, Ghost Rider, Morbius, Blaze, Nightstalkers, and Lobo. And then Dark Horse rocked my world with the Aliens series. Their first The Thing mini series is also incredible. But my all-time favorite characters and story arcs come from Simon Furman’s rendition of The Transformers. I followed him from the UK series, onto the American title, and now I’m reading the Regeneration One continuation of that story. All time favorite character? Optimus Prime. Favourite story arc? Optimus becoming the new Prime in the original War Within.

3. You've come into the world of comics from the film industry. Is this something you've planned to do for a long time or is it a case of jumping in at the deep end as a fresh approach to your artistic tendencies?

Honestly, I never had the nerve to do a full comic by myself. It’s kinda intimidating. But one day I realized Sage’s universe was created, and the characters were off and running. But they only lived in an over full folder on my shelf. So I thought, why not see what the public thinks? So I made a first issue print, and some friends helped me launch it at a few pop culture expos. And guess what? The public bought the comic. And liked it. And asked, “So what happens next?” and “When’s the next issue out?” Then suddenly I had the nerve. And I knew it was time. I was going to let the Sage: Escape characters and universe out of the folder and put it into an ongoing series. And I was going to do everything in my power to tell the story authentically and honestly. Well, lucky for me, those close friends who helped me launch the original print also stuck around for the ongoing series (‘cause I don’t know the first thing about making websites).

4. Considering the qualities you took into film and the skills and knowledge you learned from that, what do you feel you've most brought into comics with Sage: Escape? Which of your qualities as a director did you feel really helped you to get into the creative process here?

You know I hadn’t thought about it until you mentioned it, but you’re right. I storyboard Sage: Escape like it’s a film shoot. I draw all the shots (panels) on paper and arrange them in an editing pattern. In fact, I figure out the line of direction as if the panels were to be filmed. I even approximate different lens focal lengths in the artwork, even though there’s no camera. It’s the same creative process. As for qualities? The ability to stay focused and work hard.

5. I noticed quite a few cinematic conventions and stylistic references to classic and modern sci-fi in Sage: Escape that made it easy to familiarize myself with this future you've created. I felt that you'd drawn a little from the likes of Fifth Element, Star Wars, the original Aeon Flux cartoons, even a bit of Robocop and Nemesis. What are your favorite sci-fi movies?

I’m passionate about most of the major sci-fi franchises that everyone else is into these days. But here some of my favourite late night go-to sci-fi flicks: Nemesis (the Olivier Gruner one), 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars ROTS. And even though it’s not cinema, Patrick Troughton's Dr. Who episodes.

6. You also earlier mentioned that a lot of your friends read comics digitally these days. Was that the basis for your choice to go digital?

Yes, so many people read comics on tablets. It’s just the easiest way to get a new title out there. Having said that, I’d like to get Sage: Escape into print one day; most people I know collect graphic novels.

7. In comparison to the filmmaking process, what has been the most enjoyable aspect of producing your debut comic?

The most enjoyable aspect of producing this comic is working with my friends. I get to create with people that watch the same shows I do, collect toys, and enjoy going on terrifying rides at theme parks. The Sage team is…a little different.

8. Your team has worked independently here, and on a limited budget. For the Fanboys out there looking to follow in your footsteps, what are the most important things you've learned through this experience so far?

When I wrote and drew the first Sage: Escape ashcan, I was working six days a week. I worked on Sage late at night and on Sundays. I took the next year off and self funded to get the Mars Gambit mini series and Sage: Escape website going. We now have some financial backing, which enables me to continue working full time on the series. The rest of the team have full-time professions and give up their weeknights and some weekend time to make everything happen. Creating a series from the ground up takes a considerable amount of will power and proactivity. There are no short cuts. If you decide to give it your all, these are the most important things I’ve learned so far: work with people who have expertise and integrity. Seek out their opinions. Treat them well. Keep improving.

9. Will you be looking for artists in future and who would your dream artist be?

I would say no, but that would be a lie, because I’m working with an artist right now on another one of my titles. Thing is, this artist and I are into all the same films and have a lifelong obsession with the genre of that series. Also, the public likes his art, and that counts. So, I’m not looking for new artists, but you never know. As for a dream artist, I’m very interested in the work of Stewart McKenny. People know him from Clone Wars Adventures and DC Super Friends. But he also does magnificent portraits. I have one of his 8th Doctor prints in my office, signed by Paul McGann. So I’d be curious to see where that collaboration would go.

10. Any chance Sage might end up on the big screen some day?

(Laughs) I might just focus on establishing the story canon at this point. I’m halfway through the art of the follow-up miniseries, and it’s full steam ahead!

Damian, thank you for joining us, and we wish you all the best!

Marvel NOW! Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1: Cosmic Avengers Review

Posted by Orion Petitclerc - Thursday, February 20, 2014

Salutations, men and women of the geek-o-sphere! Welcome to an article by yours truly that's—what?!—NOT about Venom or Moon Knight! Yes, it's true: I'm here to talk about something outside of the ordinary, for once! (Actually, not really. I've done this once or twice or thrice before, so….) With the impending debut of a rather indie Marvel superhero film you might not have heard about called Guardians of the Galaxy (yeah, you know, that little can-do sci-fi epic you might have seen the trailer for on Jimmy Kimmel Live!), I'm going to get you guys prepped with everything you need to know about this ragtag team of misfits in outer space. What authority do I have to commit such a feat? Well, I just recently read and caught up on the current Marvel NOW! Guardians of the Galaxy comic book series written by Brian Michael Bendis, so I think a review should do the trick.

Watch the first trailer to the Guardians of the Galaxy directed by James Gunn on Fanboys Anonymous

Buy Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1 on the Marvel Comics appThe Guardians of the Galaxy is actually an older Marvel concept only recently earning increased popularity from its cult standing. The original team roster isn't as well-known among the masses as the current film-bound roster, but for now I'm going to only address the current team…because it's the only one I know. (Also because Agent Venom will be joining the team in April.) I became interested in Guardians of the Galaxy when the film was announced and when news of Angela's membership broke last year during Marvel's "Age of Ultron" cross-title event, but I didn't have any interest in committing myself and my hard-earned cash to another comic book series without Venom or Moon Knight.

It was announced a few months ago that, as part of the All-New Marvel NOW! initiative, a few printed Marvel books would include a digital collection redemption code, including Guardians of the Galaxy #11.NOW. I decided to take the opportunity to catch up on the book, considering it's only 11 issues in, just in time for when Agent Venom blasts off into outer space. The book came with a code for the free digital version of Volume 1: "Cosmic Avengers," which includes issues #0.1–3, and Guardians of the Galaxy Infinite Comic #1–4. I essentially got nine comics for the price of one. It's a sweet deal and, after having read through volumes 1 and 2, is totally worth picking up to get ready for the film, if not just for how awesome this series is.

Follow Peter Quill's rise to fame in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1: Legacy by Dan Abnett

This particular series isn't the first for the current group, but the great part about volume 1 is that you don't need to spend extra time or money playing catch-up. The book starts off with the half-human Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord (as played by Chris Pratt in the film), retelling his origin story to Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, who's fitting to join the team. The origin story also serves another purpose besides helping new readers into the mythos: it sets up the entire purpose of the team in this book. Star-Lord's father, J'son (alternatively, Jason), the King of Spartax and an alien, abandoned his mother when she was pregnant with Peter, leaving behind a world of trouble for the young heir to an intergalactic throne and for his home world, Earth. Ideally, Star-Lord and his Guardians of the Galaxy are out to protect Earth from any extraterrestrial trouble his father may have caused.

With that touching story, Iron Man is convinced and joins the team alongside Star-Lord; Gamora, the daughter of Thanos (that purple alien dude at the end of The Avengers) and the most dangerous woman in the universe (played by Zoe Saldana); Drax the Destroyer (played by David Bautista); Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper); and Groot, a sentient tree alien who knows how to say only "I am Groot" in English (voiced by Vin Diesel; think Treebeard, the Ent from Lord of the Rings).

Let's Play Mass Effect cheat codes and walkthrough
The actual story begins with J'son informing his estranged son that he and a council of the galactic empires decreed Earth off-limits to extraterrestrial interaction. They did so in an attempt to allow humanity a chance to build itself up to a position in which it could be honorably welcomed to the galactic civilization. Unfortunately for the Guardians, a situation arises during which a Badoon invasion force attacks Earth, forcing them to protect the planet on Earth soil and in Earth airspace. Obviously, the whole ordeal feels like a set-up when the Guardians are arrested by the Spartax empire for violation of the decree, and they end up fighting their way to freedom.

After the four main story books, we get four of Marvel's special "Infinite Comics"—digital comic books with special panel transition effects—featuring character study stories for Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, and Groot, respectively. Of those four, my favorite was Groot's story, which followed a special day in the life of an alien farming family jaded and angered by the troubles intergalactic wars brought to them, particularly when a space battle in low orbit rains debris down onto their farmland. It's a more grounded story from the grandiose space adventures of the main book, and I love the frustrations and the social interactions of the family beneath grand-scale conflict that's just way over their heads.

Follow Iron Man's adventures in space in Guardians of the Galaxy Volumes 1 and 2
The parts I like most about this volume are the characterizations, and I think that's where Bendis really shines, next to universe-building. Star-Lord reminds me a lot of Han Solo from Star Wars; he's a scruffy-lookin' nerf herder with a no-shits-given attitude and a swagger about him that could—and most of the time does—get him arrested or into a brawl. Gamora is a bad-ass, Amazonian-like warrior princess who despises and constantly tries to distance herself from her heritage and could probably hold her own against the Hulk. Rocket Raccoon and Groot really are the essence of a buddy-cop team and are a comedic relief in the way of R2-D2 and C3P0, but with more violence and less dopiness. Drax is probably the only anchor pulling the entire team down for me, as he seems pretty two-dimensional as a brooding brute who's the second powerhouse after Gamora but still suffers too many blows and gets the wind knocked out of him often. It's Iron Man's characterization, though, that really shines for me. For a guest star, he'd probably steal the show if he were ever featured in the team's film roster and played by Robert Downey Jr. This Tony, though, is a kid in a scientific and technological candy store: you could really feel his wonder and awe and sheer excitement in his space adventures, even when he's bereft of his armor and armed only with a blaster rifle.

Experience Marvel's Infinite Comics on your tablet, smart phone, and desktop with Comixology and the Marvel Comics app
The art really helps in selling this volume, too, between the Mass Effect-esque designs by Steve McNiven and the stylized work of Mike Oeming, which reminds me somewhat of something from BPRD and Declan Shalvey. The art never really suffers and helps the writers along with the storytelling process fluently. I was entertained and hooked from start to finish, and that's not an easy feat for a non-superhero book. Yes, Guardians of the Galaxy is not a Marvel superhero comic book; it does feature Iron Man and makes reference to the Avengers and some U.K.-based superheroes, but at its core, Guardians of the Galaxy is a sci-fi adventure, and it's super enjoyable.

I give Guardians of the Galaxy, volume 1: "Cosmic Avengers" 4.5 stars out of 5 for excellent writing and characterization (excluding Drax, who needs more work) and 5 stars out of 5 for the great artwork. This is definitely a must-read if you're interested in the Guardians outside of their upcoming film.

Are you ecstatic for the Guardians of the Galaxy film after seeing the trailer? If you read the book, what were your thoughts? Who's your favorite Guardian? Let me know in the comments section, and stay tuned for future Guardians of the Galaxy reviews by yours truly here, on Fanboys Anonymous!
