Week in Geek #153: Injustice Gods Among Us Film, Amazon Buying MGM and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Thursday, May 20, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Amazon Buying MGM

It's supposedly becoming more and more likely Amazon will be the ones to buy MGM and acquire the rights to the James Bond franchise as well as Rocky, RoboCop and some other IPs.

I was thinking Paramount would be the ones to win the bid, but Amazon surely has the money to spend $9 billion on this to bulk out Amazon Prime's list.

Ultimately, what I want is for these IPs to go to a good home that will support their best growth (rather than a studio that would get in the way and ruin the franchises) and for this streaming bubble to pop in a way that is beneficial to the subscribers and people can stop needing to sub to a million things. We need there to not be a monopoly, because competition breeds benefits for the consumers, but we also need to stop having a million of these where almost none of them are worth the monthly price.

Of course, there's this whole thing with AT&T and WarnerMedia and Discovery+ that is going to factor into the streaming wars, too, but I can't even wrap my mind around what's going on with that, to be honest. That whole situation is very clunky and confusing to me, for whatever reason. But if Amazon buys MGM, they might not be in the market to purchase WB assets, so we might see something like Comcast pick that up instead and the merger of the streaming wars could be hitting a big tipping point.

Snake Eyes Trailer

This is the most basic stuff imaginable. It very easily could have been a fan trailer. I might watch the film regardless, but the trailer did NOTHING to make me hyped.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Animated Film in the Works

At this point, you can't deny that Injustice: Gods Among Us hasn't been one of the most influential things in modern DC. I'm not even as huge of a fan of it as most people, but I'm still excited about the prospect of watching this story unfold in an animated film. Very cool!

Give me Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill and the regular folk for this, by the way.

New Animated Superman and Batman Shows Coming to HBO Max

Jack Quaid (from The Boys) is going to be a young Clark Kent in an upcoming Superman animated series, and J.J. Abram, Matt Reeves and Bruce Timm are helming a Batman animated series (Batman: Caped Crusader), both coming to HBO Max.

Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic No Longer in Development

The spin-off from The Mandalorian that was originally going to focus on Cara Dune has seemingly been shelved and is no longer in development. I'd imagine this is because, you know, the main character isn't going to be in the mix anymore. There were rumors they could replace her with Hera from Rebels, which would have been very cool. I've still maintained the idea that if you have no issues with the character of Cara Dune, but the actress, then you should just recast her. It's not as though that's never happened in the history of films and television shows. Frankly, I think it should/could happen more often than it does. Don Cheadle worked better than Terrence Howard for War Machine, right? We've had multiple James Bond actors. I doubt Cara Dune is above recasting.

LICENCE TO KILL:

STARRING:
Timothy Dalton (James Bond), Carey Lowell (Pam Bouvier), Robert Davi (Franz Sanchez), Talisa Soto (Lupe Lamora), Anthony Zerbe (Milton Krest), Benicio Del Toro (Dario), David Hedison (Felix Leiter), Frank McRae (Sharkey), Desmond Llewelyn (Q), Everett McGill (Killifer), Anthony Starke (Truman-Lodge), Pedro Armendáriz Jr. (President Hector Lopez), Caroline Bliss (Miss Moneypenny), Priscilla Barnes (Della Churchill), Don Stroud (Heller), Robert Brown (M) and Wayne Newton (Professor Joe Butcher)

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Venom: Let There Be Carnage Trailer

Oh. Oh no. Oh this doesn't look like it's going to be better than the last film. In fact, it's looking like it might end up being somehow worse. This doesn't feel right. Carnage doesn't even look impressive, nor does Woody seem like he's got the type of character down that I've always envisioned in Cletus Kasady.

I have a bad feeling about this.

Legend of the Hidden Temple

LOTHT is returning, and it's going to be for adults? Yo! I used to love this show. I even have a Silver Snakes shirt from when I had set up a partnership to tie into New York Comic Con. This is awesome news!

Now give us Nick Arcade with Xavier Woods hosting the show, too. And GUTS should return.

Shang-Chi and Free Guy Sticking to Theaters

Both films are going to remain theater-only showings with a 45-day window, shortening their time before coming to streaming services, but not releasing on the same day. No Disney+ Premier service plans for these two, at least.

I'm all up for these companies experimenting. They need to. Without testing out several different methods, there's no way to know where the future is heading and how to best navigate those waters.

I'm still not feeling comfortable enough to go to theaters. I don't know if I'll be willing to do that by the time these come out. However, my need to see these MCU films before getting stuff spoiled may be the biggest factor in making me just go "screw it, I'll risk it" haha

Disney+ Hits a Wall

After a massive start and an amazing subscriber rate that shattered expectations, the bloom is off the rose.

Q2 reports are 103.6 million subscribers, which is 7 million short of their goal. Also, the average revenue per user is $3.99, down from $5.63.

THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS:

Timothy Dalton (James Bond), Maryam d'Abo (Kara Milovy), Jeroen Krabbé (General Georgi Koskov), Joe Don Baker (Brad Whitaker), John Rhys-Davies (General Leonid Pushkin), Andreas Wisniewski (Necros), Thomas Wheatley (Saunders), Art Malik (Kamran Shah), Desmond Llewelyn (Q), Caroline Bliss (Miss Moneypenny), John Terry (Felix Leiter), Geoffrey Keen (Minister of Defence Sir Frederick Gray), Walter Gotell (General Gogol) and Robert Brown (M)

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner

The Green Lantern series coming to HBO Max has cast Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner, describing him as "a hulking mass of masculinity and, as rendered in the comics, an embodiment of 1980s hyper-patriotism, and yet, Guy is somehow likable."

That sounds like they get the character. I don't know Wittrock, so I don't know about his acting capabilities. However, he looks like he could be a solid pick based on just his appearance.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Updates

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever = Good title. I still have NO idea what the hell they're going to do with this plot without, you know, T'challa...the Black Panther.

The Marvels = Uh.....I don't like it.

Some of the footage was neat. The hype trailer in general just saying "movies are coming back, dude" was nice in general, since I miss movies.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Officially No Longer MCU Canon

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Runaways and all those shows that were "part of the MCU" a few years ago are definitely no longer considered canon. They've been moved to the Legacy subcategory on Disney+, meaning Marvel is treating them as being just as extraneous as Ben Affleck's Daredevil film, the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man films, every version of Fantastic 4 we've seen on film, and so on.

This is a good thing, though. The shows weren't really meshing well with the MCU as it was. You can still enjoy them and try to force the head canon, but you're not beholden to them. That means if they want to bring the Inhumans into the MCU, they can do that without having to keep up the continuity of the terrible show.

Like established before, we can get a Daredevil played by Charlie Cox, but it can just be a "new" Daredevil that hasn't gone through the same stuff as the previous one. Just like J. Jonah Jameson being played by J.K. Simmons again doesn't mean it has to be the same guy from Maguire's films and the worlds merging together.

There were some good things in AOS. There were also a lot of bad things. For instance, I like their design for the Darkhold much better, but I didn't like Ghost Rider. I really liked Fitz-Simmons, Mack, and Melina May. Grant was cool, but once he became a literal octopus alien, nah. I'd like to see Mockingbird brought back, and Madame Hydra, and so on.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Deathstroke's Kills in The Batman

Apparently, had the original Batman film with Deathstroke happened, Slade Wilson would have killed some "regular characters" off. No confirmation, but it seems like it would have been at least Commissioner Gordon, if not also Alfred and maybe others.

While there were some amazing things with Zack Snyder's universe, there were a lot of horrendous mistakes, too. This would have been one of them. I have no idea what this fascination was to kill off Dick Grayson instead of Jason Todd, have Jimmy Olsen be replaced by another character fulfilling even less of a purpose and then being killed off like nothing, etc.

Sometimes, it feels like Snyder's decisions were made purely on "shaking things up" rather than the best narrative. It also felt like he and many others want to always skip to the end of a lot of things and never want to go down the journey. That's why we see Batman go from starting off his career to retiring all the time.

The Flash Logo

Generic. Bland. Meh. It's fine.

Vin Diesel for Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots

We knew it was a matter of time before this was adapted into a movie, and I'm not opposed to it. It's going to be ridiculous, as it should be.

Vin Diesel will supposedly be the main human character who befriends a robot, along with his son. Sounds like the most generic way to approach it, but I'm genuinely curious what they try to do with it.

Son of Sun and Knight of Night

Chris Terrio tossed out those titles as potential other options for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

It's a little too poetic for my tastes (says the guy who thinks Quantum of Solace is one of the best James Bond titles) but I dig it. I think as a movie, it doesn't work, but as a story, it's great.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Trailer

FINALLY got a look at this film...and...meh. The action looks like it will probably be cool, but I definitely need more substance than just that, and the characters are nothing for me at the moment.

Why do I get the feeling Awkwafina's character is going to annoy me, rather than be someone I find charming?

I'm sure it'll be better than I'm feeling right now. Well, I'm not SURE, but I'm fairly confident. After all, I've been wrong in the past, thinking Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man would be awful. But I've also been wrong on the other side, thinking WandaVision would be better than what it boiled down to.

I'll see it as soon as it comes out, for sure. I'll probably enjoy it quite a bit. But for right now, I'm not feeling amped.

How I Met Your Father

Hilary Duff is going to star in a rehash of How I Met Your Mother.

Didn't they already do this? Wasn't there a spin-off that failed miserably?

I'm not a fan of even trying this. You know why? Because I absolutely ADORED the original show. Up until the final few moments of the last episode, it was one of my favorite television shows of all time. That finale really docked it a ton of points, but I still think it's 99.9% wonderful. And it served its purpose.

You can't just do the same idea and think it's going to capture the same magic. What made the show was that it was slightly different from what we had seen before and the cast had amazing synergy. Just throwing Duff in there, replacing Mother with Father and calling it a day is nothing.

Pass.

Disney and Sony Reach a Deal for Spider-Man to Come to Disney+

One more step. I love this. Can Disney just buy out Sony already?

M.O.D.O.K. Trailer

Nope. I didn't laugh or even chuckle at any of it. I hate the animation style. This is a solid thumbs down for me.

Russell Crowe is Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder

You know what? Not only can I see it, I think it might be perfect!

93rd Academy Awards

Rather than doing the normal breakdown of the Oscars that I usually put a lot of time and effort into, this discussion is something we've done on the Patreon as a Bonus Feature podcast. Subscribe to that tier and check out what myself and Rob have to say about this year's list!

The Future of Week in Geek

I wanted to make the #150 edition of Week in Geek a special one, but I couldn't think of any topics worthwhile of elaborating on to make it something awesome. This, along with how many weeks have no more than a few topics worth mentioning, has me thinking that I might be changing Week in Geek in some fashion going forward. Maybe it would be better if it's released as a monthly thing, breaking down the particular weeks and having more content per post? Maybe it needs to end entirely? What do you think? Give me your thoughts on what you'd like to see with this and I'll heavily factor in whatever input you have!
