MY THOUGHTS

I certainly haven't seen all of these movies and television shows to be able to fully judge what's going on, which is why I don't give predictions for the Golden Globes. However, to chime in on the things I did see that are nominated:

  • I've seen Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody, and I'm cool with either of them winning Best Drama, but I'd prefer Black Panther.
  • Rami Malek was great as Freddie Mercury, so if he wins Best Actor, I'm down.
  • Even though I didn't see it, I don't want A Star is Born to win things. It just feels so pretentious and stupid.
  • "All the Stars" is a good song.
  • I liked Incredibles 2 and I really hope I like Ralph Breaks the Internet and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse when I see them.
  • I've been hearing about this Bodyguard show. I might have to check it out.
  • GLOW got nominated for Best Actress for not Best Musical or Comedy? Booo. I imagine Alison Brie isn't going to win, but at least she got some recognition. I love that show.
  • Donald Glover in Atlanta is great. I don't think he'll win, but it's nice to get a nomination.
  • Darren Criss needs to win for his portrayal of Andrew Cunanan. That dude KILLLLLLED IT.
  • For that matter, give that the best miniseries award. But I'm okay with Cruz and Ramirez not winning for supporting actor and actress.
  • Thandie Newton is so good in Westworld. She won't win, but she's great.

WHO DO YOU THINK WILL WIN?
WHO ARE YOU ROOTING FOR?

Oscars Weekend: Why the Academy Awards Should be Comic-Con for Movies

Posted by Anthony Mango - Monday, December 3, 2018

The Academy Awards have been struggling with trying to appeal to mass audiences, while not losing the so-called "prestige" of still being the go-to measuring stick for film recognition.

Other awards like the Golden Globes get made fun of in comparison to the Academy Awards, but whenever the discussion is focused solely on the Oscars, people have more than enough complaints.

Why is there no Best Stunt Coordination category? Why are motion capture performances not recognized? Why aren't comedies and comic book movies able to get nominated for the more serious awards and have to only rely on things like visual effects?

They even tried to make a separate award this year that would have given recognition to a film for being a pop culture icon in an attempt to split the difference of Best Picture and Most Influential or whatever the hell they were going to call it, but we all saw right through it as a means to avoid nominating something like Black Panther for Best Picture, and once the academy was called out on that, they dropped the idea.

So how do you draw audiences to watch these ceremonies and make it a big deal while giving praise to as many movies as possible, but not diluting it too much or making the show last too many hours?

You make it an event extravaganza, instead of a one-night broadcast.

Just look at the success of things like San Diego Comic Con and apply that to the future of the Academy Awards.

People don't digest media the same ways they used to. The news isn't something we have to tune in to every night at 6 p.m. to understand what happened elsewhere in the world when we can check on our phones 24/7 to get more frequent updates on what is going on.

Twitch hosts Games Done Quick, which is a charity marathon of speed running video games that people can tune in to multiple days in a row. WWE has WrestleMania Weekend that has an entire slew of events like TakeOver and Axxess and the Hall of Fame and WrestleMania itself along with Raw and SmackDown that are all tied together in various ways.

There should be an Oscars Weekend that is similar to a convention of sorts, wherein there is more time to be dedicated to a wider variety of content before there is a "main show" that sticks out as the best of the best.

Obviously, I don't have all of the plans sorted out 100% due to details that I haven't thought of yet, but I think I have a pretty solid idea of a template of how the Academy Awards could be mapped out to take full advantage of this kind of setup:

Lifetime Achievement Night

This would be similar to WWE's Hall of Fame, in certain regards, wherein the whole event is dedicated to recognition of past accomplishments.

This is where the In Memoriam tribute would take place. It's where certain Lifetime Achievement Awards would be given out. It's even a chance to retroactively give awards to films that should have won for years where certain categories didn't exist, like giving a Best Animated Film to several different movies from the past (The Lion King, for instance).

The Acting Block

The voting for this would in part be influenced by the Screen Actors Guild, but not entirely dedicated to just those members being able to vote. The same goes for all other guilds in other categories, by the way. Maybe SAG people have slightly weighted votes or something, I don't know. We'll figure out those details in a committee.

Awards for this block would include the standard leading role ones and supporting roles, but it would also open up the availability for more categories.

Best Cast / Ensemble would definitely be one, as would Best Vocal Performance (or Best Voice Actor/Actress) for voiceover parts like animated films, as would Best Motion Capture Performance to finally give recognition to the individuals responsible for bringing those elements to the screen (which would be a shared award between the actors doing the mo-cap work and the visual effects artists on the CGI side).

The Writing and Directing Block

Best Director. Best Film Editing. Best Adapted Screenplay. Best Original Screenplay. Those are definitely a thing here.

Maybe you include some other categories, too, like Best Trailer or Marketing Campaign to include that aspect of filmmaking. So on and so forth.

Again, maybe there is a weighted vote with members of the Writers Guild of America and Directors Guild of America, but you allow voting for people who aren't in those organizations, too, of course.

The Genre Block

Here's where things get very interesting. I feel like something that gets lost in the shuffle every year with the Academy Awards is how many films aren't nominated for the more serious categories because they don't fit the standard Oscar-bait checklist of being historical dramas and such.

To counteract that, and to get people who are interested in all sorts of different things, there should be an entire section dedicated to differentiating these genres and giving credit where it is due, because maybe a movie isn't the overall best film of the entire year, but it's the best comedy, and that should get some credit.

The way I see it, you could have these subcategories, but maybe I'd be open to adding more:

  • Best Animated Film
  • Best Comedic Film
  • Best Horror / Thriller Film
  • Best Dramatic Film
  • Best Action / Adventure Film
  • Best Musical Film
  • Best Documentary

If you're wondering why Sci-Fi and Fantasy aren't up there, it's because I look at them as not being qualifiers to split them from another section. For instance, Star Wars is a Sci-Fi Fantasy Action film, so it goes under Action/Adventure. Avengers: Infinity War goes under Action/Adventure. Something like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is clearly Fantasy, but it's more of a Drama, so it goes under Drama. That's where you make the judgment call.

No Romance category. Those are either dramas or comedies. That's why we classify them as "romantic comedies / rom-coms" and such. Westerns are either dramas or action for the most part. Film noir is usually either drama, thriller or action. Crime is either drama or thriller. War films are either drama or action. Disaster films are pretty much action. Mockumentary can be either comedy or documentary.

I think I have everything covered, don't I? The only exception I can see is Best Foreign Language Film, but why are those given a separate award instead of just being factored into the other ones? Movies from all over the world have the potential to win every award. If you want, make that a separate award again, but don't bother having Best Foreign Language Comedy and all the other divisions just for non-American films. This is basically an American institution, after all.

The Technical Block

Here is where you dig deep into the more technical filmmaking side of things. They already have a separate night with the Scientific and Technical Awards, which would basically be the same thing, but with a more magnified scope.

Here is where you acknowledge things like the milestones in the advancement of film that happened that year, such as the creation of new cameras, lighting techniques, and so on.

But it's also where you can dive deeper into the more specific variations of categories.

For instance, I've always been under the impression Sound Editing and Sound Mixing should be merged together to be Best Sound Design. I know that my ignorance in the field contributes to that, and I'm sure there are reasons why they have that separate, but the average person doesn't understand that, so why not have the best of both worlds? In the technical block, you can have Sound Editing and Sound Mixing separate, but when you get down to the Main Show ceremony, that's where you've merged the two together as Best Sound Design.

This is where you do Visual Effects, Cinematography, Editing, Makeup, Hairstyling, Costumes, etc. But everything is also made up of subdivisions within the subdivisions.

For example, Technical Awards: Audio, which covers original song, score, sound editing, sound mixing, etc. Technical Awards: Visual, which covers effects, cinematography, etc. Hell, you can even have Best Titles come back and give credit to the best opening or end credit titles sequences. That's the beauty of splitting things up.

The Main Show

So the way you cap everything off on the final night is to have the Main Show ceremony. This is where all of the previous stuff comes together as one big sendoff that most people will focus on more than anything else, but the hardcore film fanatics will have been paying attention the entire week.

On the Main Show, a section of the broadcast would be dedicated to recapping what had happened previously on the other days. It wouldn't take long, because if people are truly interested, they can check the internet for more information and they should have just watched all of the other footage to begin with (or any of the number of recap shows outlets like Fanboys Anonymous, Screen Junkies, Collider and so on would have provided).

Categories on the Main Show would be a funnel of everything in that something like Best Actor/Actress and Best Supporting Actor/Actress would consist of every possible option, just like it currently does and how I merge things on the Fanboys Film Awards. You can get nominated for any genre film in any circumstance.

Best Picture would be the 5-10 films that THE ENTIRETY of the voting community agreed upon are the 5-10 best overall films of the year. I don't know how exactly you do that voting process, but maybe it's a system based on each individual person picking 10 movies in a weighted format and then adding that all together through some statistical math formula that balances things out. That's up to other people to figure out the technicalities of what works best.

The Main Show is where the red carpet happens. It's very similar to what we have now, but maybe streamlined a bit more, because you've already given credit to a lot of other things, and people don't have to have speeches that last forever, because they've already had their platform to speak and give thanks on previous days.

Categories would include:

Best Picture

- This would be the film that combines all aspects to make the overall best product. It has the right balance of directing, editing, screenplay, acting, etc.

Best Director

- This would be awarded to the person who did the best job bringing a film to life, but maybe it fell short a bit on the story aspect or something.

Best Screenplay/Story

- This merges adapted and original, because we have a distinction of that separately. It is the film that has the best overall story, but maybe fell short on the acting or directing or visual side of things.

Best Actor

Best Actress

Best Supporting Actor

Best Supporting Actress

- No changes to these four categories. They're still the biggest draws in a lot of ways.

Best Visuals

- This merges visual effects, production design, cinematography, etc

Best Character Design

- This is makeup, hairstyling and costume design.

Best Music (or Best Original Song + Best Score)

- An argument can be made to merge these two or keep them separate. I'm open to both ideas.

Best Sound Design

Best Documentary

- This includes both feature length and shorts.

Best Animated Film

- This includes both feature length and shorts.

Most Popular Film

- Yes, create that award, and make it so the voting is open to the public to give them a voice.

Extra Amenities

Keep in mind that if this is a multi-day event, you can incorporate other elements to the mix other than just the awards being given out.

You can host film screenings of the movies that are being nominated on a round the clock basis for people to check out. You can have panels like comic con. Autograph sessions can take place. The red carpet can be a whole show in its own just for the people who want to focus on fashion in some way.

The possibilities are endless for extra things you can do on the side and how this could expand.

That's a Wrap

There you have it. That's my plan. Treat it like a convention for movie lovers, similar to how comic conventions are dedicated to people who follow the geek culture spectrum like superheroes and such, and how there are video game conventions for gamers, music festivals and so on.

If it works this well, you can even branch off the concept into the Emmy Awards and do something similar for television!!

This way, it becomes a true event that lasts more than just one night where people can avoid watching the show and then finding out the results on their morning Facebook feed and the people who are truly entertained by film can lavish in it for a weekend, while even more awards are given out to rain praise on the people who did a damn good job that year.

I think this is the true future of the Academy Awards and the only way it will survive the changes in mainstream media and the entertainment industry that are currently unfolding.

Tell me what you think of this idea in the comments below, and if you're an executive working for The Academy and you love this idea, we need to talk, so send me a message.

6 FLICKS PICKS

Which films make the cut?

6. The Silence / Under the Silver Lake — There isn't a trailer for The Silence yet, so I can't quite judge if that's the thing that I would pick over Under the Silver Lake, but it's definitely between those two.

5. Vice — Not a fan of George Bush or Dick Cheney, but the trailer had me laughing.

4. Bumblebee — I've learned my lesson that I'm not paying to watch these movies anymore. But, with the three free movies per week from AMC A-List, maybe, maybe I'd watch it.

3. The Mule — The song used in this trailer alone is a good enough reason to see this movie.

2. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse — It's Spider-Man. Of course I'm seeing this.

1. Aquaman — It's a DC film. I already bought my tickets, even though it's Aquaman.

Week in Geek #26: Daredevil Cancelled, Tom Hanks is Geppetto and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, November 30, 2018

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Young Justice: Outsiders Trailer

Pumped. Is that Damian?

Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures

Shorts. Of course. Does Disney have a bad marketing strategy with this stuff or what? Why do they feel like kids can't follow things that aren't shorts all that much? And all this filler is lame, instead of exciting, particularly when your trailer shows things we've already seen.

Want to get me excited? Undo The Last Jedi, or at least show me something that Luke does after ROTJ that is cool (even though it doesn't matter at all because TFA and TLJ ruin everything).

The Ten Rings in Marvel Comics

The MCU villainous organization is now part of the comics canon. Very cool! Just don't make the same mistake with The Mandarin that the films did.

Chris Evans "Not Done" with Captain America?

The Russo Brothers have said he's not finished, but haven't indicated what that means. I'm really, really hoping that Avengers 4 ends with literally all of the heroes alive again except for maybe Loki, if you count him, and I'm okay with Heimdall going away for good (so long as Sif is still there), but I want Tony Stark and Steve Rogers to be the new heads of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Avengers in a sense. Give me Rogers as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Stark as the head of the Avengers and they're off-screen during future events, so to speak.

Daredevil Cancelled

No season 4 for Daredevil, which sucks. The third season was probably my favorite of any of the seasons in the Netflix group of shows and I was really looking forward to seeing Bullseye in true form, more of D'Onofrio as Kingpin and so on. They keep saying these characters will live on elsewhere, but if they keep cancelling shows, how will that be? Are they going to announce some Heroes for Hire offshoot series that is more of an anthology where you can spend less time on each character or something? Are they just going to Disney+? Bummer...

Blue Beetle Film in Development

Yeah, sure. I'll believe it when I see it. It's not a bad idea, but how about you get your shit together and do a Batman film and all the other movies you've been saying you're going to do before you start adding more onto the plate that keeps getting washed clean?

Tom Hanks = Geppetto in Live Action Pinocchio

I can totally see it. Awesome. Pinocchio was never my favorite, but Hanks is great.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THESE TOPICS?

Week in Geek #25: The Lion King Trailer, Birds of Prey Title and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, November 24, 2018

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Boba Fett = Luke's Mom?

Apparently, Mark Hamill once pitched the idea that Boba Fett should be Luke's mom and a double agent working for the rebels. You know, it sounds crazy, but it wouldn't have been the absolute worst idea, like what some of the things have happened in The Last Jedi. I prefer clone Stormtrooper guy and Padme being who they are, but hey, Hamill's at least brainstorming, right?

Deadpool 2 = Best Picture?

So 21st Century Fox is pushing Deadpool 2 in a For Your Consideration campaign for a bunch of Oscars, including Best Picture. Really? C'mon guys. Don't waste your money on that. You know that's impossible. Go for the technical things, sure, but you're not getting nominated for Original Screenplay and such.

Groot and Rocket Raccoon Series to Disney Play?

Gimme. I thought they would ruin the MCU and then I saw GOTG and of course, changed my mind. I'm pretty much up for any spinoff series they want to show at this point. Hell, I'd watch a show about the sandwich shop owner from Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

That's the title? This movie is sounding worse and worse every day. It's not cute or quirky. It's just dumb.

The Lion King Trailer

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude. The Lion King is one of my three favorite Disney films (the other two being Aladdin and Toy Story) and this looks amazing. The visual effects are astounding. I still wish Jeremy Irons were Scar, but we'll see how things turn out. At least they have Mufasa down. Now give me the Hans Zimmer score on top of it (particularly This Land) and I'm going to be so sold on this being my favorite movie of that year.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

RIP Stan Lee

Sadly, the inevitable came as at the age of 95, Stan Lee has passed away. Of course, it goes without being said that this man is a legend in a caliber few ever are able to achieve. He's the top of the food chain in a very select group of individuals like Jack Kirby, Bill Finger and so on who are responsible for crafting the modern mythology of pop culture. He's reach through these stories and characters is undeniable and cannot be overstated when you look at the impact even one particular character like Spider-Man has had through so many lives, let alone the pantheon as a whole. He was charitable, personable, and by all accounts, a truly fantastic human in so many ways. Imagination itself was boosted by his presence and takes a major hit in his absence. Excelsior.

Toy Story 4 Teaser

There isn't much to go on here, so I'm stuck with the same thing I've been thinking from the start: all three movies have been great, so I have no reason to doubt they'll pull this off, but you never quite know if someone is going back to the well too many times or not. This story of a non-toy becoming a toy and struggling with the idea of wanting to be a spork seems hilarious to me, and I'm seeing this movie no matter what anyway, so yeah, thumbs up.

Detective Pikachu Trailer

What the hell? This has no right to look like it could actually be good. This premise is ridiculous and somehow, it looks decent?!??! What world are we living in???

Wait...is that it?

I could have sworn there was at least something else I would have found interesting to talk about this week. Weird...

Week in Geek #23: The Purge Season 1, Bohemian Rhapsody Review and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, November 10, 2018

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Doom Patrol on Titans

Yeah...uh....I've never been familiar with Doom Patrol, as that's not a comic that I ever bothered to read. So I didn't know what I was getting into, but let's talk about this. Why is Titans launching a pilot of this show, basically, when Titans itself hasn't even gotten started, really? And if this was supposed to get me psyched to see that show, it failed. I didn't dig the characters they introduced.

But hey, at least Beast Boy got to shine a bit in this episode more than he has so far. That was a step in the right direction. He's just going to leave all of his shit, though?

The Purge Season 1 Thoughts

Season 1 of The Purge television series ended this week and I have to say, overall, I liked it, even if not all of it landed the way it was supposed to.

Pete the Cop is the best. Penny was annoying and I wanted her to die, so her whole redemption thing was totally lost on me as I felt she didn't earn it. The married couple was annoying because I felt like I was supposed to side with Jenna, but she was a miserable contradictory bitch the whole time (whereas Lila and Rick had some problems, but weren't as bad). Joe was a good character. I feel bad as hell for Jane.

I hope they do another season, but that the only people who they follow are Pete the Cop and MAYBE Miguel. I don't need any more Penny.

Very good idea to have a cult that wants to sacrifice themselves and a few other stories that were playing out, but I feel like some of them didn't need to be as long as they were, and like most shows, you probably could have cut out an entire episode or two (or even 3 in some cases) worth of material and had a tighter story. I didn't need all those arguments of Rick and Jenna to get the gist of what was going on, but hey, The Purge has worked much better as a concept than I ever thought it would and I'm down for more.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Saw the movie last night and I liked it. I'm someone who has literally ZERO investment in bands and musicians, and I couldn't care less about Freddie Mercury in particular as an artist even though I like some Queen songs, so I didn't know much of his story before going in, but I enjoyed it quite a bit and I would recommend it.

That's it?

Yeah....I haven't been noticing much else going on this week, but I did have a limited scope as I was busy. If you want me to chime in on something, drop a comment below and fill me in.

Week in Geek #22: Avatar Sequel Titles, Simpsons Dropping Apu and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, November 3, 2018

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

The Simpsons Will Drop Apu

Apparently, having an accent is offensive now. Absolutely ridiculous. The first 10 seasons of The Simpsons as a whole are my favorite television series ever, and the show has been varying degrees of awful ever since, but stuff like this is one more nail in the coffin. I hate how everyone is offended about everything nowadays. Should they just get rid of Flanders because someone's going to complain that he's "pushing religion" to viewers? Should they get rid of Homer because he's offensive to fat people? Should they get rid of Chief Wiggum because he's not providing a great example for the best and brightest of the police force? Give me a goddamn break.

Birds of Prey to Get a Different Title? / Be Rated R

Sure. Cause it's not like it's Birds of Prey or anything, right? Then again, you are missing Batgirl, so...

And for the record, aiming for Rated R doesn't mean it'll be good by default. It just means you're focused on trying to be edgy, probably, and how the marketing side LOOKS to people. Maybe focus on making a good movie first and then see if it lands as R or PG-13.

Falcon & Winter Soldier Team-Up Series for Disney Play

I'm down. Hopefully, this doesn't mean Cap dies, though.

Rehire James Gunn Billboard

Over $4,000 have been spent so far in a digital billboard with this message. I don't disagree with it. I think Gunn's "jokes" were horrible, but I think they were supposed to be jokes, and at the end of the day, having poor taste in humor a few times in the past and trying to move past it shouldn't kill your career forever.

Vision in Scarlet Witch Show

The report claims Vision will be in the Disney Play series for Scarlet Witch. Of course, it's a rumor, but it's something that's wildly believable because of how much it makes sense. They set up the idea of a backup copy of Vision with Shuri and I'm sure that wasn't just a red herring for the hell of it. They can make him the white version of Vision and explore the relationship between the two in this series and where they go post-Avengers 4. Totally down for it.

Jesse Martin Takes Medical Leave of Absence from The Flash

This makes sense. Every episode, he was sitting down or leaning against a wall.

Legends of Tomorrow

I just want to say that I watched the first two episodes of this season and I think I'm done with this show. I stopped watching Arrow because of the Felicity stuff. I couldn't get past the first episode of Supergirl because of how much it's a "girl power anthem / PC-oriented / let's talk about these important social issues" driven show, and I've been struggling with LOT because of how incredibly campy it is. I don't like Doctor Who. This became Doctor Who. Beebo was the straw that broke the camel's back and I figured I'd give them a chance to course-correct, but it seems like they doubled down on whacky instead, and I don't want to watch a season of unicorns.

Avatar Titles

Rumor has it, the films are Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkn Rider, and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa. They sound stupid to me.

6 FLICKS PICKS

Which films make the cut?

6. Shoplifters — I was going to give this spot to Bohemian Rhapsody, but then I checked out the trailer for Shoplifters. Something about that caught me. I'm not sure what, especially since I usually don't bother with foreign language films, but I honestly may go out of my way to watch this.

5. Widows — My original thoughts after seeing this trailer at the movies was "bad ass" and even though I don't think it'll be something that will win any Oscars, I could see it being one of those films where people are surprised at how good it is and a few actors having some buzz about nominations, even if they don't get them.

4. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald — This is a case where I've seen so many other films in the franchise and I enjoyed most of them, so I'm just going to continue watching them until it really annoys me. Fantastic Beasts wasn't anything special to me, so I'm not holding out hope for this to be great. But what the hell, right? Magic's never been my thing but Harry Potter was solid.

3. Ralph Breaks the Internet — I really enjoyed most of Wreck-It Ralph. This doesn't look anywhere near as good, but the trailers could just be doing it a disservice. Can't judge it until I see it, so there's no reason for me not to give it a shot.

2. Robin Hood — I'm probably going to regret this, but I legitimately want to see this movie. I don't even really know why. I can't put my finger on what it is that makes this different from every other adaptation of this and King Arthur and all the other similar things. Maybe it's just Taron Egerton. That guy's so good and I really want his stardom to just blow up.

1. Creed II — As a whole, I enjoy the Rocky series more than each individual film. By that, I mean I can't really ever feel the need to want to put on Rocky III or something, but the overall arc of this franchise is amazing if it were condensed into one movie, so to speak. Creed II capitalizing on bringing Drago back is just the right type of fan service. Give it to me.

Week in Geek #21: Reign of the Superman Trailer, Pepper Potts Rescue and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, October 26, 2018

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Luke Cage Cancelled

Well, they definitely set up another season, so between this and Iron Fist, I'm curious how they'll wrap it up. Heroes for Hire doesn't seem like the natural progression, but maybe they'll figure out a way. Or, maybe this is a sign that all of the shows are getting cancelled and going to Disney's streaming platform.

Kylo Ren ISN'T a Spoiled Child?

Apparently, there was a joke in Ralph Breaks the Internet that positioned Kylo Ren as a "spoiled child" and Disney had them take that out. Why? It's not like the Star Wars franchise hasn't PURPOSELY made him out to be that type of character. The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi literally had the goal in mind to make him a whining, complaining brat who represents people who care "too much" about what came before this new regime and then, the representative of Disney itself saying "fuck all that" with The Last Jedi. Ugh, this new Star Wars management pisses me off so much.

A Nick Fury TV Show for Disney Play?

Sign. Me. UP. Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury is awesome and we haven't gotten enough of him. I hope this is true. I could use more Maria Hill, too, so I hope she's the female lead.

Reign of the Superman Trailer

Very neat. I'm excited for this.

Pepper Potts Will Suit Up as Rescue in Avengers 4

That real quick part of Iron Man 3 where she had the suit was what many people thought would be the one moment of her being Rescue, but now that we have a shot of her in a separate costume, very cool.

Pirates of the Caribbean Rebooting, Maybe?

Why? Haven't you bled the franchise dry yet? It was popular because the first one was good and Johnny Depp took people by storm. Then, people got annoyed with it when the films started to suck and if you reboot it, there isn't enough good will to keep it going. Anyone who is still a fan won't really want to see the new stuff and anyone who dropped off won't likely want to see a lesser version.

Alan Tudyk Voicing The Joker in Animated Harley Quinn Show

Interesting, and I can see it working out well. I'll withhold judgment until I hear his take on it, but I think it'll be good.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World Trailer

The first two movies were pretty good overall, so I'm sure I'll see this one, too. The trailer itself doesn't seem all too groundbreaking or impressive, but whatever.

Spider-Gwen Changes to Ghost Spider

That makes much, MUCH more sense.

Clueless Reboot

Couldn't think of anything else and picked another reboot off the floor, right?

Season 3 of Marvel's Daredevil has premiered on Netflix, and per usual, this post will be documenting my running commentary of thoughts as I watch every episode. I'll be adding notes almost as a stream of consciousness and when everything has concluded, I'll be wrapping everything up with a full season recap and review to see just how good or bad the overall package was and the hits and misses in a Reviewpoint podcast video.

I invite you to follow along and to leave your thoughts in the comments below just the same!

Netflix desktop Marvel's Daredevil wallpaper

Marvel's Daredevil (Season 3 - 2018)

SHOWRUNNER: Erik Oleson

STARRING: Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock / Daredevil), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Franklin "Foggy" Nelson), Joanne Whalley (Sister Maggie), Wilson Bethel (Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter / Bullseye), Jay Ali (Rahul "Ray" Nadeem) and Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk / Kingpin)

*WARNING: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS BELOW!*

Episode 1 - "Resurrection"

  • Very cool opening imagery.
  • "I can't see!" - uh, hate to break it to you, Matt, but you've been blind for a good number of years now. That shouldn't be a shock anymore.
  • "What happened to you?" / "Life." - LMAO I get it.
  • I was definitely curious what was happening to all of Matt's stuff in his apartment, as the passage of time is hard to tell, but sooner or later, someone would end up buying out his place. You can't just completely disappear for a month and not pay your rent and such.
  • "Job was a pussy."
  • Kingpin is the man. D'Onofrio was such perfect casting.
  • Very glad they're already getting into the idea of Matt getting better. I don't want 6 episodes of rehab. 2 or 3 is good and the progress made in this episode SHOULD go a long way in cutting that down.
  • Digging the remixes of the main theme I've been hearing so far.
  • So...why didn't my subtitles pop up for that Hindi conversation? Why did I need to turn on the full English subtitles? Glitch, or a choice?
  • You're gonna fuck up, Ray. But I understand. Money is the worst. I hate shit like his situation, where the circumstances to get you out of a hole are cut off to you because of the hole. Make money to be able to afford not having money. Awful. Life is horrible, like Matt said.

Episode 2 - "Please"

  • All things considered, Matt didn't come out of that scuffle all that bad.
  • Oh damn, smart move giving up legitimate information, Fisk. I was thinking this would be a scenario where Ray would agree to set someone else up to take the blame for himself and/or Vanessa.
  • Brush off that stab wound, big guy.
  • Don't be a bitch, Hattley.
  • Ew, I could totally see Heiresses of Manhattan being a show with all these "Real Housewives of Blah Blah" programs on the air.
  • So does Matt perpetually only adjust his beard to a 5 o'clock shadow?
  • "Not in braille." - LMAO what a dickhead. I really enjoyed this scene of Matt scoping out the laundromat.
  • "Thank God for you." / "He didn't help you. I did." - nice.
  • Fisk. What a romantic.
  • I sympathize with Ray enough that I really hope he doesn't die in this scene (or at all, unless he becomes a total scumbag).
  • This set of kills impresses me more with Bullseye than the entirety of the stupid tricks and such in the Daredevil film tried to pull off. Although, I do still hope he kills people with toothpicks and such.

Episode 3 - "No Good Deed"

  • I hope Bullseye goes by the name Lester at some point just for the sake of that reference.
  • I still maintain my opinion that Ben Urich shouldn't have been killed and every role Ellison has could have been fulfilled by Ben. For instance, Karen could have been set up to date Phil Urich.
  • Fisk really loves those blank white walls.
  • Making Bullseye a cop is an interesting choice. I like it.
  • There's a toothpick. Here's hoping Bullseye uses it. Chekov's toothpick haha.
  • Okay, maybe Tammy isn't too bad, fundamentally.
  • I could go for a bento box.
  • The thing I don't quite get about having Bullseye as a good cop, though, is that they teased him being an assassin twice before, so unless he's on the take or corrupt in some way, it doesn't make much sense continuity-wise.
  • I definitely enjoy when Matt goes into Batman mode as a stealth operative and such. All the more reason why we need him to have his black suit by the end of this season, as much as I do love the red one. Just don't go with the yellow or stay with the sweatpants for the whole thing.
  • If I were Foggy, I'd just tell Karen. Fuck you, Matt. You don't get to show up like that and dictate terms for everything.

Episode 4 - "Blindsided"

  • Once upon a time, Marci was a stuck up bitch. Now, she's supportive and genuinely trying to help out from all angles. Awesome. I'm a fan.
  • I don't remember this inmate guy. Should I? Downside to these shows not being once a year. It's harder to keep track of each minor element.
  • I really don't want anything to happen to Ray and his family, which almost makes me want them to bite the bullet because it'll be effective as hell.
  • Oh hey, the subtitles worked this time.
  • Hallways are the stars of Marvel Netflix.
  • Goddamn that repeated stabbing to the guard's neck.
  • The taxi waited for him through all this! Hahahaha
  • I can see why Bethel was looked at for Captain America. He has the face for it and carries himself with a certain integrity.
  • "Lemme get yo names." - gross
  • Another smart move, making Murdock seem like a criminal.

Episode 5 - "The Perfect Game"

  • So meticulous.
  • Dex, don't be a creep.
  • Poor Coach.
  • "I want to kill you for leaving me." - the writing is pretty damn good this season
  • I could use some if those sandwiches. I'll vote for Foggy.
  • Well, ya fucked up, Dex.
  • It's been a while since Sister Maggie factored in.

Episode 6 - "The Devil You Know"

  • Matt still had a backup pair of clothes on hand not in the apartment?
  • No way Evans comes out of this alive, right?
  • They sure mention Ben Urich enough on this show that felt the need to kill him in the first season.
  • Bullseyedevil is awesome. I love the use of random office supplies as weapons.
  • Taking a break on a high note. Really liking this season so far, but I'm exhausted. More to come.

Episode 7 - "Aftermath"

  • I totally thought that guy was going to shine Fisk's shoe instead of check the ankle bracelet.
  • See, a lot of time is being wasted with Fisk just looking and walking. It isn't really building any tension or going anywhere. It's just eating up time. This could have been cut down/out.
  • All this media coverage and yet, Daredevil and Luke Cage still aren't part of the Sokovia Accords. I hate how there is such a disconnect with the Netflix shows. At least Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tries to fit in (even if they fail at times).
  • Why do I get this feeling that Sister Maggie isn't going to be revealed as Matt's mom, for some reason?
  • Good dialogue exchange with the Santa Claus back and forth.
  • They haven't stated yet if Ellison is dead, so I'm assuming he isn't, but I don't remember any shots of him getting up and being okay or something.
  • Goddamn, those cell phones going off asking if people are okay. That's heartbreaking. Little details like that have been done so well this season.
  • Melvin! What a nice guy. Still waiting on Stilt Man being a throwaway villain in a Spider-Man movie or something.
  • Okay, Ellison is still alive. I don't blame him for wanting to know who Daredevil is, and at this point, I'm pretty sure he's trustworthy enough to know the name, too.
  • How does Melvin's new shop look just as beaten down and rough as his old one? Some definition of "new".
  • Oh shit, Melvin just buckle-bombed Matt!
  • Still hoping this works out with Matt getting a black suit from Melvin, which also is a redemption for Melvin.
  • You are wearing that dress, Marci. Thumbs up.
  • Nice thinking on the spot with the spilled beer and glass alibi. Props, Ray.

Episode 8 - "Upstairs/Downstairs"

  • Fuck yeah, more Bullseye. This season's been great.
  • I have to imagine Bullseye is the best at vacuuming, being able to pick things up from all sorts of angles.
  • "How are you not at the bottom of a bottle right now?" - because not all of us are addicts, Karen. Get your shit together.
  • Oh wow, Julie just cut ties. I thought they were going somewhere with the whole scapegoat joke and such.
  • Maggia. Nice. (Sister Maggia lol)
  • Get that shit stitched up and checked out, Ray. Don't be stupid.
  • "Our son is too much like, you, Jack." - good, she's still his mom

Episode 9 - "Revelations"

  • Young Maggie looks like she could be the young Joanne Whalley. Young Jack Murdock, though, doesn't really look "young" to me to begin with. For that matter, the young Lantom doesn't look all that much younger for 35 years passing by. Poor job on the two guys.
  • Oh fuck, of course Tammy was corrupt. Damn it. I knew she wasn't worth trusting.
  • Last time Matt was in this boxing ring, he fucked Elektra. Somehow, I doubt this time will be as fun.
  • For fuck's sake, Ray, are you gonna get that bullet hole checked out or what?
  • Kingpin is such a good nickname to have.
  • Oh shit, Fisk is a genius. A full year? Losing the insurance coverage and setting Ray up? Give the guy props, he deserves to be the kingpin of crime with all this work and due diligence.
  • It's hard not to see the point of view that it would be a lot easier if Matt killed Fisk. It wouldn't solve all crime, but it would sure put a dent in it.
  • As much as I like Bullseye-devil, I do want to see proper Bullseye in black at some point.

Episode 10 - "Karen"

  • Drugs are bad. Mmmkay?
  • I really hate station wagons. Such an ugly car.
  • Why do those flattened penny things exist? I mean, I had one or two when I was a kid, but why are they like a regular thing? Who decided to make those so widespread?
  • Those eggs look so fake. Not Batman v Superman fake, but still.
  • Some good boyfriend, backhanding your girl. Piece of shit.
  • You're fucked now, Karen.
  • Damn it, Lantom. Why'd you have to be a hero?

Episode 11 - "Reunion"

  • Almost never fails that episode #11 ends up being a lot of spinning wheels.
  • This woman looks damn good for her age if she was a toddler during World War II.
  • I'm losing hope that I'll get a black-suited Daredevil and a proper Bullseye this season, sadly.
  • I just realized we haven't seen Turk yet.
  • Yaaaaay we got another "Fisk fucks someone's head up in a car" moment. Brutal.

Episode 12 - "One Last Shot"

  • Vanessa's cold shoulder stings.
  • Omelette attempt #2
  • Dex killed the old woman, didn't he? Yup.
  • Don't fuck up, Ray. Don't fuck up. You're gonna fuck up...
  • Not making good on that promise of the pool, Ray.
  • Starting to think he's going to kill himself, instead of my original idea, which was to try to kill Fisk and fail in a suicide attempt of sorts.
  • RIP Ray.

Episode 13 - "A New Napkin"

  • What if Foggy just accidentally hit the delete button on that video?
  • Full-on crazy with the frozen dead body, Dex.
  • That shit is just bouncing off Fisk??
  • Vanessa's just standing there, a target who isn't helping.
  • Well there goes the painting's aesthetic.
  • Bullseye is paralyzed? Not sure how they'll get around that for the future.
  • Again, disappointed no black costume and no true Bullseye.
  • Hattley doesn't deserve to have flipped.
  • "Way more stable than Jessica Jones." - at least you mentioned some continuity there
  • Oh okay, Bullseye's gonna be fine. That makes me happy.

Week in Geek #20: Iron Fist Cancelled, Ric Grayson and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Thursday, October 18, 2018

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Bad Times at the El Royale

I wasn't super duper impressed, but I enjoyed myself. It's the type of movie that was good in the sense that I went into it wanting a fun night out, and since I have AMC A-List, I didn't feel like my money was wasted. However, if people were to ask if I would recommend it to them, I'd think twice about whether it's worth the time to really truly sit down and watch.

DC Titans Premiere

It's cheesy. It's unnecessarily dark.

Robin is awesome, but I don't like the story that Batman kills. He shouldn't. That's kind of the point. I don't know why they figured they'd go against that, but it speaks to them having a bad interpretation from the start and that doesn't give me much hope that they won't make other major errors.

Why the fuck is Starfire a killer, too? Is that something in the comics I'm unaware of, or is this just another example of them wanting everyone to be dark for the sake of it? Since Raven's story is so dark, I would have LOVED if Starfire's was actually bubbly and comedic and funny. That way, it could have offset the tone and brought something different to the table. I know Beast Boy has some potential for that, but I didn't get to see that in this. Then again, I didn't get to see much of anything in that part, because they purposely went super dark to try to hide the wonky CGI.

The girl playing Raven leaves a lot to the imagination and I hope she gets much better. Also, what's up with her forehead? Cheap shot, but that hair makes it so noticeable. Also, there wasn't enough of a setup for the "everything led me to you" plea between Rachel and Dick. Rushed and poorly done.

"So, you're not really, huh?" / "What?" / "An asshole." - dialogue like this exposes poor writing. Nobody talks like that with the setup. She would have said "So you're not really an asshole, huh?"

Why is this Detroit? I know they couldn't do Gotham, but why not Bludhaven?

This took two sittings to get through and I struggled both times. This show better change a lot of things in the next episode and onward, or this isn't going to be something I can truly enjoy.

Iron Fist Cancelled at Netflix

Makes sense. The series has struggled and they don't need these solo series. What they really should have been doing was combining things and doing Heroes for Hire from pretty much the start.

Supposedly, this may be revived on the Disney streaming service, but I don't know how that would really go about, and if it did, I'd hope they'd have a shorter episode run.

Also, supposedly, Danny will continue to pop up in other shows. Hm...weird.

Ric Grayson

He's no longer Dick Grayson. He's Ric Grayson. This made me chuckle, particularly as Batman just showed his dick in the comics, so it's weird timing. Look, everyone has made jokes about the name Dick for decades. Why is now the time to make a judgment call on saying no to that and changing it? I'm not opposed to Ric Grayson, and if it sticks, then I'm cool, but I'm just curious why they felt now is the time that it needed to happen rather than any other time.

Solo | A Derpfakes Story

Deepfakes are amazing. Of course, you can tell they're not the real thing, but take a look at this video where Alden Ehrenreich is replaced with Harrison Ford for Solo and tell me it doesn't somehow also still feel more natural?

Mega Sg

I don't talk much about gaming, as I'm not a gamer, but the idea of a relaunched Sega Genesis that plays 2,180+ games is a good idea...until you see that it costs $189.99 and it doesn't have any of the games. If this were the mini equivalent of the Nintendo and Super Nintendo and whatnot that they have going on, and it actually had all or most of those games, it would be a steal. That's not the case.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Delayed Until 2021

Ouch...that's a long, long time...and I'm not sure it's the best move. I trust Marvel for the most part, but they're not infallible and this may come back to bite them in the ass.

Jack O'Connell for Batman?

As a rule, I don't believe anything said in any regard about DC anymore, because the stories change all the time, so I don't put any stock into this, especially since other reports say Ben Affleck is still going to be Batman. I know nothing about this actor, though, to be able to judge whether or not he'd be a good fit.

Secret Six Series for CBS

Not too familiar with that team in any regard, but I did love Scrubs, so I'm down for checking it out.

WarnerMedia Launching a Streaming Service

How does that factor into the DC Universe plan, if they potentially have DC content on there? Maybe DCU will be a cheaper platform and targeted that way, but run off the same servers? WB has other material like the Harry Potter films and stuff, but I don't know about ignoring DC content and going with other stuff and making it worthwhile to subscribe to two.

James Gunn for Suicide Squad 2

So this makes sense in a lot of ways, and I'm kind of excited to see what he can bring to the table. If it's true that Dave Bautista is interested in taking part, he's big enough that he could play some different roles. Maybe he'd even be a possible pick for Bane? Just a thought. Maybe something more like a Drax type where he's in makeup. I don't know. Then again, it's a DC film, so I shouldn't trust that this won't just be another failed project.

Joker Movie Extras Locked in Subway Car for 3 Hours

What the hell is going on with this story? If it's true, how is the production working like that? That's horrible and it's not good press for DC and Warner Bros

Kraven the Hunter Movie Could Feature Spider-Man

No. No. No. No. No. Don't do a Kraven movie. Don't pull Spider-Man out of the MCU. Don't make these stupid mistakes, Sony. Don't think that people checking out your Venom movie out of interest in Venom means that you know what the hell you're doing. You don't.

Netflix Lucifer Season 4 Must Advertise on FOX Network for Success

Posted by Anthony Mango - Tuesday, October 9, 2018

This is the time of year where TV shows return, so if you haven't been inundated with tons of advertisements for what the "hot new programs" are, you're living in a bubble or you're just skipping everything with your DVR or torrents.

One show that isn't returning in its normal format is Lucifer, which was cancelled by Fox several months ago.

Thankfully, the good people over at Netflix took notice of the show's dedicated fan base and decided to pick it up, with filming set to wrap in December, as far as I'm aware, which means we're looking at something like a spring 2019 premiere for the show.

So here's the kicker that I hope isn't going unnoticed: in order for Lucifer to succeed well enough to get picked up for a season 5, people who were casual fans of the show need to know they can tune in on Netflix.

The only way to do that properly is to run commercials on the Fox network itself, as that was its former home and that's where people will be looking for it.

Sure, a good number of people are going to be looking on the internet for information and they'll find out that way, but it's important not to underestimate the people who ONLY have cable and don't bother with Twitter and Reddit. There are plenty of people out there who don't even have a computer, or if they do, they're still stubborn enough to not want to bother searching for something quickly on Google.

Those people are invaluable numbers Lucifer can't afford to lose, as there are definitely going to be folks who aren't willing to subscribe to a Netflix account just to watch one program, so the ratings (so to speak) are going to be lower by default.

On the contrary, though, there's also the opportunity to gain more subscribers and even retain them—don't forget about that.

Netflix should take the opportunity to invest a little bit of money into running some ads simply to let everyone know where they can find the show they used to watch for three seasons to help mitigate that loss, because you don't know how many people will specifically sign up for Netflix JUST to watch Lucifer. Once that happens, they might check out some other programming and then stick around a few more months, if not indefinitely.

It's also worth having an extra episode's worth of a prelude to recap people who may be new to the show. Just take existing footage and do a 1-hour summary of the first 3 seasons, breaking down who the characters are, the journey they've gone through so far, and everything else viewers may need to catch up on. That way, new viewers who stumble across it on Netflix and weren't aware of it beforehand, as they didn't have cable, don't feel like they're jumping into something 4 seasons deep and can't follow along.

But that can't happen if it's just a completely unknown thing that this show is on Netflix now, to the people who only turn on their TV and let the Fox network promote what's going on there.

Just saying...this is a strategy that Lucifer can't afford to not implement. Otherwise, the numbers will be disappointing and season 4 will be the last.
