Week in Geek #18: NYCC 2018, Female James Bond, Margot Barbie and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Sunday, October 7, 2018

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Zack Snyder Would Have Killed Batman in Justice League 2

Terrible mistake that we thankfully avoided, even if it meant having other horrible decisions as the trade-off. You can't kill off Batman like that. This franchise and Warner Bros in general consistently want to skip ahead in so many ways. Why have "old Batman" in three out of the six most recent live-action versions of the character?

Pedro Pascal is Hades or Maxwell Lord

Those seem to be the two prevailing theories. It may even be both, as they may just combine the characters. I'm getting a sneaking suspicion they have one gimmick going on with Wonder Woman, which is "god is pretending to be a human and Diana in a different decade figures it out at the end" and I don't think a repeat is the best idea.

Female-Led 21 Jump Street Spinoff

OF COURSE they're thinking about doing this. My god, why do studios do this? Why are they so transparent and so unoriginal and so stupidly political? They feel like since there's been more of a movement for women (which is great) that they can capitalize by just slapping a "idk...women team up and do the thing we did before" concept. They had the gall to say "The north star for us is wanting our movies to feel different, not done before, not recycled" — this is the complete opposite!!! 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street were great. Don't just say "that, but with women, so we can look woke" and pat yourselves on the back. Jesus, this stuff annoys me. This is just as stupid as the Ocean's 11 and Ghostbusters stuff and I'm sure whatever the next dumb idea will be. Now, if you were to tell me that you'd do 23 Jump Street and in the movie, Schmidt and Jenko are partnered with two women and THEN, if they're popular enough, those two women get their own spinoff, I'm down for that. But that's not what's happening, and this reeks of such eye-rolling studio b.s.

Nicolas Cage Wants to be Lex Luthor

No.

Russian Bots Trolled The Last Jedi

I'm sure some bots were involved, but don't act like this is an excuse for making a divisive film. This isn't a cop out. You don't get to blame the fans who hated the choices you made on some scapegoat.

Ant-Man's Luis Won't Get a Standalone Spinoff Film

Of course he won't. He's better at telling other stories from other people that he's heard about other people, not having the stories himself.

Rosie Perez Cast as Renee Montoya

She's older than what I would have wanted my Renee Montoya to be, but I do like this casting, overall.

Harley Quinn Animated Series Trailer

....I dig it, a lot. Like, a lot a lot. Kaley Cuoco is a great choice. The animation is solid. The humor worked. How am I more excited about this than I am any other DC property right now?

Damon Wayans Leaving Lethal Weapon

So they lost Riggs and now they're losing Murtaugh, too? How is this even a show at this point? Lethal Weapon is Riggs and Murtaugh. Just give up and cancel it.

Titans Trailer

There's something about this girl playing Raven that I just don't like from these stills and trailers. And c'mon, we can all agree Starfire looks ridiculous in so many ways. I still don't get this horror tone. I really hope Beast Boy's transformations don't look awful but since they haven't really shown anything other than a quick tiger that looks REALLY bad, I'm imagining the CGI is just terrible and like a video game.

Daredevil Season 3 Trailer

Darkness only responds to darkness. So emo. Hey, a hallway. Okay, so I get it, Bullseye will use the Daredevil costume and make him be a public menace and then Matt will have to struggle with rehabilitating that image while also not losing himself to being more violent. I hope it doesn't struggle. I don't want to watch 13 episodes of a show that dawdles and hits the same marks that season 2 already touched on. But it could be great.

Avengers: Annihilation

This is the latest rumor for the Avengers 4 title and I hope it isn't true. It's too generic. I've been really loving the name Avengers: Eternity War and I hope that's the case, depending on what other options are available and what the story is and such. Annihilation is so blah. Might as well be Avengers: Resurrection or Avengers: Revolutions or Avengers: Rise of Blah Blah.

Mega Man Live Action Film

I've been saying for years that they should try to do this and I think, even though it goes against the whole weird canon, if they do a sequel, it should be Mega Man X and it should just be an upgrade of the same character, not a brand new robot. Make it with a good enough budget for the CGI to not look bad, but don't make it some absurd 300 million thing, and MARKET and PROMOTE the movie once you make it, and get writers on board to craft a decent film, and don't let the studios get involved and you can get something good out of this. Don't fall victim to the poor strategies that gave us the Super Mario Bros movie.

The Mandalorian

Shame I don't like Star Wars as much anymore and I have my doubts that this series will be anything but like the rest of them, how it's "omg wouldn't it be interesting if all this stuff happened that coincidentally don't change anything about anything ever?"

Dark Avengers Coming Soon to the MCU

So the first thing to address here is that since this is the MCU, they do change elements of the comics, and you'd think fans would be more aware of that by now, but I guarantee this is going to start a bunch of discussion of people saying it's 100% guaranteed Sentry and Ares and so on will be in this. That's not necessarily the case.

However, until we get any info on just who will be on the team for this script that was commissioned, which will go through many tweaks, I'm sure, it's all up for speculation.

Sentry is an interesting character that I feel, if done right, could break out and become a mainstream contender. They just have to figure out how to handle his story and change a few things about it.

Do we get Ronin? Do they mix things up and go with a completely different setup and just call it Dark Avengers, kind of like how The Defenders really should have been Heroes for Hire to an extent, since they didn't include Hulk and company? If that's the case, does Doctor Strange take part in the Dark Avengers because his shtick is darker than someone like Spider-Man? What about a character like Wonder Man? Or U.S. Agent? Is this Secret Invasion with them hunting Skrulls?

Very interesting to see where they go with this...

Margot Robbie as Barbie

Now THIS is what a Barbie film's lead should be, not Amy Schumer. Barbie is literally synonymous with "hot blonde" and Robbie is a hot blonde, for sure. If they're looking for more nuance to avoid making the film some super boring adaptation of a vapid airhead, then Robbie also has the acting chops to bring more to the table. Anne Hathaway could've pulled it off, too, and she does look great as a blonde based off that other film I saw a trailer for recently (6 Flicks Picks) but Robbie is much more in line with what they should be going for, both in looks and acting ability.

The Flash: War Zone Season 5 Trailer

Jessica Parker Kennedy is such a good cast for being their daughter. Other than that takeaway that I've had since the first moment she popped up, this didn't do much for me. It looks as generic as it can be. A few shots are interesting, like how he has the ring now, but I'm not holding out hope that those moments will be frequent. This is a highlight reel of sorts, with lots of down time that will be interspersed.

Barbara Broccoli on a Female James Bond

She says no. "Bond is a male. He's a male character. He was written as a male and I think he'll probably stay a male. And that's fine. We don't have to turn male characters into women. Let's just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters."

Exactly!! If people are clamoring for a Female James Bond, they have three possible agendas: 1) They just want something different purely for the sake of it, which isn't the right way to go about things because I don't see anyone wishing Kill Bill could be remade with a male protagonist, 2) they purposely want to undermine men by taking something away, 3) they want to see a kick-ass female spy, which is something that I think everyone can agree would be a good thing because there's nothing bad about that equation.

If that's the case, institute a woman in one of these Bond films that is good enough to get a spinoff. Jinx Jordan wasn't good enough, but if she HAD been, people would've been cool with a movie featuring her. People liked Ilsa Faust from Mission: Impossible and she's popular enough that she was the first woman brought back outside of Michelle Monaghan. Make an Ilsa Faust for the 007 franchise, and hell, you can even make her 008 - because we've never seen 008 before - and give her a spinoff, and you're good. You don't have to make the main character Jane Bond or something.

6 FLICKS PICKS

Which films make the cut?

6. The Oath — Yeah..this doesn't look funny at all to me, but I'd rather watch a comedy that maybe can get one chuckle out of me than a drama that I'll be bored to death with.

5. Serenity — I always thought Anne Hathaway was hot before as a brunette, but man is she a sexy blonde, too. That's about it. Big names in this, so maybe it's good. It doesn't look all that impressive, though.

4. First Man — This strikes me as the type of film that may be in Oscar contention for just Ryan Gosling, but at least for that.

3. Halloween — Why not, right? I've seen the bulk of the other ones (1, 2, 4, 5, 6, H2O, Resurrection) and even though I didn't really like them, at least I have a familiarity with this franchise.

2. Bad Times at the El Royale — Now we're actually talking about a film I DO want to see and WILL watch. I'm super curious what the mystery is all about and it seems like it's fun, and I've had some good experiences with Drew Goddard so far.

1. Venom — I have no doubts that this will be underwhelming, but it's a superhero film about my favorite Spider-Man villain. I have to see it.

Week in Geek #17: Trailers and DC News and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, September 28, 2018

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

(Note: All my notes for this week got erased through a Blogger glitch, so I'm recreating these from memory. I may have forgotten some of the things I wanted to talk about, or the order in which these stories came out. Very annoying...)

Photos of Joaquin Phoenix as a Clown

More and more, I'm getting the feeling they wanted to do an Elseworlds story and not a Joker film, and that's pissing me off. This isn't good. I'm not liking this at all. If this weren't trying to package itself as a Joker DC story, then sure, it looks interesting, but this is just coming off like they're capitalizing on a brand name they can get attention on and it's not actually anything to do with the comics.

Daredevil Season 3 Teaser

I really hope this isn't a sign the writers want to just recreate the arc from season 1 with Matt aking on the low-rent costume again. Please don't just succumb to "let's go back to what got the most buzz before, because we can't think of anything else." This better be a sign, instead, that he's going to create the black version of the red costume we saw before. Also, more Fisk, the better.

Kingsman 3

Step 1: Undo Roxy's death. Then, maybe I'll be excited. I was so disappointed in Kingsman 2 because I loved the first one so much, and her death pissed me off.

Black Widow Synopsis

Y2K? I'm in. A prequel? Eh...that's taking the easy way out, and I'm not sure how Scarlett will look younger than she did 10 years ago, even 20 years ago. You have to include Winter Soldier if you go with a prequel, too. Also, Hawkeye. But as much as I don't think this will work and I'd rather see a story post-A4, I'm still interested in her being hunted by the KGB and I still trust Marvel.

Creed II Trailers

I was never the biggest Rocky franchise fan, but I've seen all the movies and for some reason, I'm really excited for Creed II. Draaaagoooooooo!

X-Men Dark Phoenix Trailer

Stop. Stop. Just cancel this or put it on the Disney streaming service. This isn't going to be good. Why are you trying to tell the same story you already botched, in an atmosphere that looks like you're unable to juggle all the elements you want to? I hate that they did this whole "each movie is a different decade" idea because it makes no sense. How have Charles and Erik only aged a few years in the span of like 40? Why is Mystique such a big player in this just because she's a major actress? Why is Jean Grey going all Dark Phoenix again when you haven't even had the chance to build the relationship with these characters in the new cast? For that matter, I NEVER understood why the X-Men had so many magical and space elements. I've always hated that. To me, the series should be about the mutants and that's it. No aliens, no crimson gem of Cyttorak. Just mutants.

Black Canary and Huntress Cast in Birds of Prey

I wouldn't have gone with either of these for either role. In particular, I would have swapped them, if anything. This movie just keeps giving me more and more reasons to wish they'd actually reboot everything and start all over, even if it means losing Henry Cavill. Warner Bros and DC don't know what they're doing. Just stop and give up. This movie is going to suck.

Kathleen Kennedy Signs New Contract for 3 Years

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Damn it. Star Wars is never going to get back on track and undo the damage of these past films, is it?

Week in Geek #16: Batman's Damned Penis, Captain Marvel Trailer and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, September 21, 2018

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Batgirl Series Coming to DC Universe Service

A 13-episode live action series is rumored for the DC streaming platform. If that's the case, I'll check it out. I like Barbara Gordon.

Brainiac for Supergirl Film

Don't do a Supergirl film. If you do, don't waste Brainiac. Brainiac should be the villain for a Superman film, with Henry Cavill.

First Look at Joaquin Phoenix as Joker

Well, technically as "Arthur Fleck"...and sure, he looks like he could eventually turn into Joker, because that's what Phoenix has always looked like. I'm still assuming this movie is going to be a mess, though.

Brett Cullen Cast as Thomas Wayne in Joker

Not really familiar with him. I know he was in The Dark Knight Rises and Person of Interest, but I can't really place him.

Captain Marvel Trailer

So Nick Fury looks so good with the CGI. I don't get why a big deal was made out of Thor and such when Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. have already dealt with alien threats in the past. Brie Larson is going to be such a good Danvers. The trailer itself didn't really speak too much to me to get me pumped, but it's Marvel, so it's going to be great.

Batman: Damned Shows Bruce Wayne's Penis

Won't somebody please think of the children!!??! Come on. It's a penis. All guys have them. It wasn't some graphic thing of him playing with his Batdick. Could they have had a convenient shadow block it? Sure. Was this necessary? Nope. But it's no big deal, especially since it's part of a line that is supposed to be more adult-oriented, and when nobody thinks twice about all the violence in regular comics.

All-Female Marvel Superhero Show in the Works

Well, like anything else, I'll withhold judgment until more information is out there. Who are the characters? What is the team? What is the premise of the show? Is it going to be JUST about how they're women, or is it going to be a show that just happens to have all women as the main characters? If it's got one goal in mind, which is entirely just "market to women and take a feminist edge and be political", then I'm out, because I'm a guy and I don't like shows/movies that exist entirely just to be political, no matter what the message. But if it's something where there's more substance to it, then that's awesome. That's why I wasn't interested in Marvel's Most Wanted. I didn't want a Hunter and Morse spinoff. But that's why I'm into Damage Patrol, cause I do want a comedy show about the cleanup crew. It all depends.

Marvel Shows for Disney Play

Supposedly, we're getting spinoff shows that will be something like six to eight episodes. First off, great episode count. Second, it's great that these are going to be controlled by Marvel Studios and not the TV division, as the TV shows have been just good at best. Now, let's dive into the rumored characters.

Scarlet Witch - What's her story here? I'd be totally cool with a spinoff of her and Vision after Avengers 4, but it all depends on what they want to do, and I definitely want Vision in it. I'm not interested in a prequel or something along those lines.

Loki - With Loki, on the other hand, I'm interested in pretty much anything.

Who else could get spinoffs? Well, I'd like to see something given to Hawkeye, for sure. I don't want Valkyrie, even though I know that's not a popular opinion. I just felt like her character was okay and nothing special. I liked Lady Sif better. I'd be cool with a Winter Soldier story. I'd also be cool with a Ravagers show with Stallone and company. Nick Fury and Maria Hill?

Ralph Breaks the Internet Trailer 2

Crap. This doesn't look as good as the first one...

Cary Fukunaga to Helm Bond 25

Interesting choice. We'll see.

Week in Geek #15: Henry Cavill No Longer Superman? and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, September 15, 2018

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Captain Britain and the Black Knight

Guy Ritchie is supposedly taking on this project. I know virtually nothing about this character's history, but I'm down for more Marvel, so I'll watch it, for sure. Let's see what happens with his Aladdin movie, though, first...

Said Taghmaoui Potentially Cast as Bond 25 Villain

He did well with what little he was given in Wonder Woman. If he's been looked at for the villain, I'm game.

Henry Cavill No Longer Superman?

This SUUUUUUUCKS if it is true. He was an amazing Superman and just wasn't given the best material to work with. If they let him go, it's even more proof that Warner Bros and DC have no idea what they're doing, are just throwing random ideas at the wall, and are abandoning this universe of connected films and going back to the more haphazard "nothing is connected, because we can't be bothered to vet the right people and do a good job like Marvel" methodology that films have always had before, which, frankly, isn't as entertaining in the long run. People want to see Superman and Batman and such together. It would be one thing if the movies were all great, but it was just a struggle of trying to get them connected. No. This has suffered from poor planning from the start and the production studio tampering. Justice League would have had some problems, for sure, if it were 100% Zack Snyder's baby, but at least it would have been a true film instead of a mixture of multiple films.

Also, Michael B. Jordan is stunt casting if they go with him. That's ENTIRELY just to get people to buzz about a black Superman and a popular actor. It isn't that he'd be right for the role. Don't get me wrong, Michael B. Jordan is one hell of an actor, but he's not the right fit for Superman. I don't want Tom Hanks for Superman, either, despite how good of an actor he is. Henry Cavill isn't the one and only person who could play Superman, but he did pull off the part. Let the guy get his true film. Recast Lois Lane, instead.

Iron Fist

So...it took me a while, but I finished Iron Fist. I didn't feel like doing a podcast about it. Just wanted to add that onto this, because people might not be aware of the review that's already posted.

Week in Geek #14: No More Most Popular Oscar, RIP Burt Reynolds and More

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, September 8, 2018

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Ben Mendelsohn will be a Skrull in Captain Marvel

Dude was born to play villains. I'm 100% down with him being a Skrull.

Timothy Dalton Cast in Doom Patrol

My favorite James Bond! I'm always cool with him getting more work. I wanted him to be Alfred in a Batman film at some point, but this is neat, too.

Burt Reynolds Passed Away

I'm not the type to immediately start talking about how much I loved a celebrity that I didn't necessarily follow the career of, but he was good in Boogie Nights and some other things, and it's never a good thing to hear that someone has passed on.

No More Oscar for Popular Film

There were flaws to this concept, but also positives, so I have a mixed reaction. A good thing about this going away is that it will allow films like Black Panther to be taken more seriously for Best Picture, instead of having a divide between Oscar-bait going into Best Picture and other films going into Most Popular. The downside, though, is that this award could have given many more films some recognition that wouldn't normally get it, and if we all would have approached it as an equal to Best Picture, then it could have really changed the game for a lot of things. I guess you take the good and bad.

Daredevil Season 3 Teaser

....that's it?

These weeks have had such little going on. Sorry for not having more content.

Season 2 of Marvel's Iron Fist has premiered on Netflix, and per usual, this post will be documenting my running commentary of thoughts as I watch every episode. Since Iron Fist was rather brutal to get through the first time, I'm not going to be binging this in one shot. Rather, I'll be spreading this out over time, and I'll be adding notes almost as a stream of consciousness while watching these episodes. When everything has concluded, I'll be wrapping everything up with a full season recap and review to see just how good or bad the overall package was and the hits and misses in a Reviewpoint podcast video.

I invite you to follow along and to leave your thoughts in the comments below just the same!

Marvel's Iron Fist (Season 2 - 2018)

SHOWRUNNER: Raven Metzner

STARRING: Finn Jones (Danny Rand / Iron Fist), Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing), Sacha Dhawan (Davos), Alice Eve (Typhoid Mary Walker), Tom Pelphrey (Ward Meachum), Jessica Stroup (Joy Meachum), Simone Missick (Misty Knight)

*WARNING: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS BELOW!*

Episode 1 - "The Fury of Iron Fist"

  • Why is the beginning of this reminding me of Ninja Turtles?
  • At least the fighting is more interesting so far.
  • Um...that's it? This intro was a bit underwhelming with it leading to nothing. Maybe I was supposed to mark out over Golden Tiger, but that reference is lost on me.
  • Davos would be more threatening if he were taller. Just saying.
  • Truck guy is sure to die.
  • Mary's not interesting yet. I hope she gets there.
  • Ward always reminds me of wax sculptures.
  • Joy looks good.
  • Is this the third or fourth of these shows to have a story about a turf war?
  • This isn't selling me on this season.

Episode 2 - "The City's Not for Burning"

  • Credit that they've been able to downplay Alice Eve's looks.
  • On the contrary, they couldn't be bothered to shave Davos and Danny to make them look any bit younger at all?
  • Ugh...don't tell me we're gonna get Colleen jealous of Mary AND Danny jealous of this dude working with Colleen. Unnecessary romantic tension crap to weigh this down, I'm sure.
  • They definitely have a crutch of Colleen stumbling upon a crime.
  • Have to assume BB is going to die, too haha. This crew will help the heroes out and BB will bite the bullet (pun intended) in the process.
  • I really, really wish they'd do more to make these shows feel like they actually fit in the MCU continuity. It makes me so disappointed.
  • Sucks to be Yang.
  • Well, it's 6:50am right now and I'm not loving this. Time for a break. No idea, for sure, when I'll pick this back up, as I'm not supremely motivated to keep watching, but I'm sure I'll finish it.

Episode 3 - "This Deadly Secret"

  • Glad they're going with Danny wanting to replace K'un-Lun with New York on behalf of the deceased Matt Murdock. Logical.
  • LOL Ward with the middle fingers.
  • Dinner's never just dinner. Sometimes, it's brinner. Right, Turk?
  • Who's Walker? Some kind of Texas ranger...
  • Oh come the fuck on. Mary can't just disappear like that. Stop doing that, movies and TV shows. It's completely unrealistic.
  • That pasta "trick" is b.s. but I'd be up for some grilled meatballs right now.
  • Good job, Colleen. Fuck all this politeness.
  • Abrupt ending.

Episode 4 - "Target: Iron Fist"

  • Misty's always a welcome addition.
  • Why doesn't anybody ever mention the Sokovia Accords?
  • Ward is my favorite character of the bunch.

Episode 5 - "Heart of the Dragon"

  • Davos would be such a more efficient Iron Fist.
  • Mom's a bitch.
  • So this is why Bethany is here in the story other than to just give Ward something/someone to do.
  • Ward definitely has become my favorite character of the bunch, although I have to give credit for how much better Colleen is than she was for a good chunk of last season.

Episode 6 - "The Dragon Dies at Dawn"

  • C'mon Joy. Stop being a bitch.
  • So where's Albert been?
  • You know, Mary doesn't strike me as Typhoid Mary.
  • Davos is at least cleaning up the streets, however wrong vigilantism like this is.

Episode 7 - "Morning of the Mindstorm"

  • So melodramatic.
  • Enough of this sponsor shit. I agree, Ward.
  • OMG this episode is just so over the top with the melodrama.
  • Can we skip past this training stuff? I kind of don't care, and my kind of, I mean totally.

Episode 8 - "Citadel on the Edge of Vengeance"

  • Ah, Albert mention.
  • Sokovia getting a mention is practically the best we can hope for when it comes to continuity.
  • Oh fuck you. You don't need to break up because you're training. So dumb.
  • Mid-episode, I'm falling asleep.
  • Sucks to be Ryhno.
  • Can we be done with this training prep stuff yet?
  • We didn't need the injury if we were going to ignore it right after and make it an emotional journey instead. It should've just been an emotional thing, then.
  • Ugh. Don't do this whole Colleen is Iron Fist thing. I don't want some third season about her dealing with the power and then Danny getting it back. That's so cliche and unnecessary, like when Smallville would do stories of Lana/Lois being powered while Clark was human. Goddamn it.

Episode 9 - "War Without End"

  • I repeat. Don't give Colleen the power. I'm not interested in that story and it doesn't make her a stronger character. She's stronger for NOT taking it and for supporting Danny through other means.
  • Well Joy isn't dead.
  • Do not care about this mom plot.
  • Still waiting on Typhoid Mary looking like Typhoid.
  • Turk!!! Yaaaay!
  • Well I was wrong that Albert would die, and BB. And that there would be a love triangle. So far, at least.
  • Shifu is not an intimidating sounding name.
  • Homeboy Liu is so doomed. At least he's a boss fight.
  • Okay so maybe I was wrong about BB not dying.
  • So if you want me to think they're doomed, break the bowl. But to cure that, make it so Danny has it in him even without the ritual and that he heals his leg, and Davos keeps his power, too, and that way, next season, we have options.
  • Uugggghhhh fuck you. I don't want Iron Fist Colleen and utterly pointless Danny for half of next season. The story just becomes Danny feeling inadequate and Colleen getting power hungry and the two going back to status quo after wasting lots of time.

    Episode 10 - "A Duel of Iron"

    • So dumb. Mary wasn't her character and meant pretty much nothing in the grand scheme.
    • Let's just do a season of Daredevil where Foggy puts on the suit, or another Luke Cage where Claire is bulletproof instead. Colleen isn't the main character here. Not interested in this next season outside of Ward and Joy.
    • It's a shame. I liked this season more than the last, but it didn't amount to much. Thank God it was only 10 episodes, as I still think they had some filler they could have cut to make this maybe 8 episodes. Some scenes were a bit repetitive and kept saying the same thing. The leg injury wasn't necessary. I guess I just can't expect much out of Marvel TV, even though the movies are great.

    FULL SEASON REVIEW:

I normally do a Reviewpoint podcast for these, but I've taken so many days to get through this, that I know it won't get any hits on YouTube and I honestly would rather just type out my thoughts.

So...what are my thoughts, now that I've had some time to digest the season?

To be honest, it was better than I thought it would be. The first season was worse, for sure, and one of the major positives with this season was that it was three episodes shorter. That was a GREAT help in cutting down on the extraneous b.s. that we didn't need, but it still had some filler. I think if this were 8 episodes, it would have been super tight and we wouldn't have missed out on anything, and I would have liked it more.

There were a few things that were repeated and could have been cut. I don't think we needed Danny getting injured and being trained by Colleen, as that wasn't much of a factor. I don't think we needed that many conversations between Davos and Joy that basically had the same "watch yourself" motif. So on and so forth.

Mary Walker was a dud. She didn't feel like Typhoid Mary at all, and I know that this was a setup, but that doesn't mean I have to like the prequel origins that don't dive into the origins type of thing.

Ward was the best character, for sure. Dug him the entire way through. Joy, I liked quite a bit, too. She was a bitch, but she was supposed to be.

I liked Colleen a loooooooooooooooooooooooooot more this time around than before. Admittedly, I was annoyed at the idea of giving her the power at the end, and I didn't want to see the next season revolve around Danny feeling inadequate and her getting power-hungry, but the last shot of Danny having the two fists makes up for it, because it seems like it's just a matter of "Colleen also has powers, and Danny has even more than before" which is good.

I liked Mrs. Yang. Wasn't a fan of BB and the kids. The dude from Bayard was kind of just there. Shame Albert didn't have more to do or come back at all. That was weird.

I feel like this was a bit hollow, to be honest, and maybe could have been a really good 6 episode story that could have just been entirely something like 1) Davos and Joy are back and we catch up with the characters while Danny is fighting the rival gangs. 2) The gang turf war gets worse while Davos and company set up more of their plans. 3) Davos steals the power. 4) Danny tries to get up the courage to fight Davos and everyone is arguing and whatnot, big fallout while Davos takes out the gangs. 5) Heroes start figuring out plans of how to save the day while Davos is having lots of in-fighting with Joy, who may be changing her mind. 6) Colleen gets the Iron Fist, Danny leaves with Ward, Joy is now in charge of Rand maybe, Davos is in prison. No need for Mary at all.

Anyway...some ups, some downs. I think I might have enjoyed it more than sitting through all of Luke Cage season 2 with the 13 episodes. Please, please stick to 10 going forward. I'll watch another season of Iron Fist, but I'm looking forward to Daredevil and Punisher more.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE SEASON?

    6 FLICKS PICKS

    Which films make the cut?

    6. A Simple Favor —Admittedly, I'm curious what this is all about.

    5. Love Gilda — Gilda Radner wasn't one of my favorite SNL cast members, but this is at least about SNL and not about something like a period piece drama about an 1800s candlemaker or something lame.

    4. Peppermint — Meh, generic action. It's mindless and there might be a few decent set pieces.

    3. Smallfoot — Could be cute. I don't know. The preview wasn't bad that I had seen before Incredibles 2.

    2. Night School — Maybe with AMC A-List, it'll get a few laughs out of me.

    1. The Predator — I liked the original.

    Edgar Wright for Bond 25?

Well I didn't see that one coming, but if it's true, it could be interesting. I think Edgar Wright is one of those guys that is overrated by a lot of people, but has the potential to do a lot of great things, if given the right projects and passion. I haven't seen Baby Driver, but I heard some good things. So long as he doesn't come into the project wanting to change things for the sake of changing it, he could work out real well.

    Disney Play

This is the name of Disney's streaming service. I have two reactions to this. First off, to the people who don't have dirty minds, this makes a lot of sense. Second, after the James Gunn situation, woof, that's a bad name.

Alec Baldwin Cast as Thomas Wayne in Joker

More of a reason for me to not trust this Joker movie, as Thomas Wayne shouldn't be in it. But hey, The Shadow is Batman's dad. Ha.

Never mind. He's apparently not playing the part.

Matt Smith and Dominic Monaghan Cast in Star Wars: Episode IX

Did they cast them as "retconning The Last Jedi"? No? Okay, then they're probably as superfluous as Holdo and I shouldn't care.

Alan Tudyk Cast as Mr. Nobody in Doom Patrol

Neat. I don't know much of anything at all about Doom Patrol, so I have no comment on that, but Tudyk is fun.

Mark Raxton in Spider-Man: Far From Home?

Is this going to be the type of nonsense where they have just some random person on the bus be "Mark" and ruin the potential to use the character in the future, like they've done with about a dozen people already? Look, I love when you use a character that is from the comics in a spot where they make sense, but don't flat out waste them. Molten Man isn't some super awesome character like Norman Osborn, but still, if you're going to do Mark Raxton, have him be Molten Man and have him fight Peter in one scene.

5 Ways X-Men Can Be Brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe Continuity

Posted by Anthony Mango - Sunday, August 26, 2018

We all know the backstory: Disney has purchased Fox's assets and part of the package is that the film rights to the X-Men characters are now able to be brought into the fold for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Let's just get that out of the way.

For far longer than when this deal was even in the works, people have been talking strategies and theories on just how that could happen, as the MCU is pretty well established at this point with absolutely zero involvement in mutants.

Sure, we've had Inhumans, and it's been a complete and utter mess, revolving entirely on the television side of things, which goes completely ignored. Especially that TV show. Woof, that was awful. But that's the closest thing we've gotten, and even that doesn't have any impact on the movies, but bringing in Wolverine and company certainly would.

Without even talking about the logistics of the properties like The Gifted and Legion and other elements like that—all of which certainly wouldn't be able to be folded into the continuity and continue—let's just assume Marvel starts with a complete, clean, fresh slate.

If that's the case, how do they establish mutants in a world that has never had mutants?

Here are five ideas that I have regarding the potential ways this could be pulled off.

    1) What do you mean? They've always been there!

This is my least favorite method, and I really hope that Marvel doesn't go in this direction, but it would be the simplest and easiest to do.

Effectively, they would do what they've done with everything else, and just say that things were in the background and nobody knew about the mutants in the shadows, or some clandestine government organization like S.H.I.E.L.D. did in fact know, but oddly, nobody ever brought it up, ever, in any capacity, even in conversations that seemed to fly in opposition of not mentioning it.

It's lazy and it makes no sense and creates plot holes, but the MCU isn't immune to errors like this. They're not infallible.

    2) The Infinity Gauntlet

My ideal situation is for the end of Avengers 4 to be that there have been some changes to the canon, fixing some plot holes, patching up a few problems here and there, establishing some storylines that can be explored in the future and for everything to be in a better state.

For instance, I don't want Steve Rogers or Tony Stark to die. I want S.H.I.E.L.D. to be reinstated, so we can have that group's presence in the movies, and with Stark and Rogers as the heads of it (allowing them to work in the background and not have to appear as Iron Man and Captain America in movies). I want Thor to be the king of Asgard, allowing his absence. Clint and Nat and Rhodey and Sam and Maria Hill and even Nick Fury are in the mix as trainers and overseers of S.H.I.E.L.D, too, and so on. I want the timeline to make more sense. I want some of the television show's continuity to be cleaned up so we can do some of those stories better, like how we really got screwed on some characters meaning nothing. I want an acknowledgment that they know what's going on with Daredevil in the film universe and that people like Steve and Tony are aware of people like Fitz-Simmons, too.

And, I want this "new world" that is created with undoing the snap to be a world where mutants exist in a shadowy sense. S.H.I.E.L.D. knows about the existence of the genetics and have studied people like Wolverine, who has fought alongside Cap in World War II, and Magneto has gone through all that he's gone through, but mutants are largely in the background and nobody really addresses them as a social issue.

The gems themselves can do this, or this can be done by entities like The Living Tribunal, Eternity, Infinity, Death, Entropy, and so on, as a response to the way the gems were used. Basically, they could repair the universe. Better yet, you can have one quick shot of Stan Lee, playing The One Above All, and he can simply hand-wave the explanation to all the "true believers" watching. It's the MCU. You can get away with breaking the fourth wall.

    3) The Beyonder

Maybe we go into Secret Wars, to an extent. Maybe The Beyonder screws with the world and creates some kind of merge between the two universes and allows for an explanation of why they were separate and why they're coming back together, after we see some of the MCU characters fighting the X-Men.

This would be messy and hard to accomplish, but it could be super fun to see.

    4) The Fantastic 4

As a way to establish the Fantastic 4, who also need to be brought into the mix, what if there's an experiment that Reed Richards is working on (with or without Dr. Doom) that actually manipulates the universe and is used as an explanation for why these elements were missing all along?

Avengers Tower in New York should be replaced by the Baxter Building, for sure, and while we're establishing Reed and the F4, there could even be Kang the Conqueror making an appearance to further drive home the point of the new timeline. Hell, if you want to do an even deeper cut, have this other-worldliness written off as a byproduct of Franklin Richards in the future having messed with things and restoring the universe to having mutants.

    5) Onslaught

We've already seen Magneto, Apocalypse, the Phoenix Force, the cure storyline, and more. We're running out of major X-Men villains to have their first appearances, and even though I don't think Onslaught is anywhere near a fully-realized character, it would at least be something different to bring to the mix.

You can't just introduce Mad Jim Jaspers and have him do all the reality manipulation, nor can you make Scarlet Witch responsible if she's not a mutant (and I hope she isn't ever converted over to being a mutant, as I like her so much more when she isn't)

But Onslaught has immense psychic abilities and could be used as a crutch for removing the world's knowledge of mutants, in some kind of misguided attempt to let them live in a bubble, away from normal eyes, and when it pops, the reality that was being manipulated snaps back in on itself and the universe "heals" this by having characters have new continuities where they've dealt with mutants in the past and such.

Those are my ideas, but what do you have to say about the topic?
How would YOU introduce the mutants into the continuity and explain their absence after all this time?
