Week in Geek #18: NYCC 2018, Female James Bond, Margot Barbie and More

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Zack Snyder Would Have Killed Batman in Justice League 2

Terrible mistake that we thankfully avoided, even if it meant having other horrible decisions as the trade-off. You can't kill off Batman like that. This franchise and Warner Bros in general consistently want to skip ahead in so many ways. Why have "old Batman" in three out of the six most recent live-action versions of the character?

Pedro Pascal is Hades or Maxwell Lord

Those seem to be the two prevailing theories. It may even be both, as they may just combine the characters. I'm getting a sneaking suspicion they have one gimmick going on with Wonder Woman, which is "god is pretending to be a human and Diana in a different decade figures it out at the end" and I don't think a repeat is the best idea.

Female-Led 21 Jump Street Spinoff

OF COURSE they're thinking about doing this. My god, why do studios do this? Why are they so transparent and so unoriginal and so stupidly political? They feel like since there's been more of a movement for women (which is great) that they can capitalize by just slapping a "idk...women team up and do the thing we did before" concept. They had the gall to say "The north star for us is wanting our movies to feel different, not done before, not recycled" — this is the complete opposite!!! 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street were great. Don't just say "that, but with women, so we can look woke" and pat yourselves on the back. Jesus, this stuff annoys me. This is just as stupid as the Ocean's 11 and Ghostbusters stuff and I'm sure whatever the next dumb idea will be. Now, if you were to tell me that you'd do 23 Jump Street and in the movie, Schmidt and Jenko are partnered with two women and THEN, if they're popular enough, those two women get their own spinoff, I'm down for that. But that's not what's happening, and this reeks of such eye-rolling studio b.s.

Nicolas Cage Wants to be Lex Luthor

No.

Russian Bots Trolled The Last Jedi

I'm sure some bots were involved, but don't act like this is an excuse for making a divisive film. This isn't a cop out. You don't get to blame the fans who hated the choices you made on some scapegoat.

Ant-Man's Luis Won't Get a Standalone Spinoff Film

Of course he won't. He's better at telling other stories from other people that he's heard about other people, not having the stories himself.

Rosie Perez Cast as Renee Montoya

She's older than what I would have wanted my Renee Montoya to be, but I do like this casting, overall.

Harley Quinn Animated Series Trailer

....I dig it, a lot. Like, a lot a lot. Kaley Cuoco is a great choice. The animation is solid. The humor worked. How am I more excited about this than I am any other DC property right now?

Damon Wayans Leaving Lethal Weapon

So they lost Riggs and now they're losing Murtaugh, too? How is this even a show at this point? Lethal Weapon is Riggs and Murtaugh. Just give up and cancel it.

Titans Trailer

There's something about this girl playing Raven that I just don't like from these stills and trailers. And c'mon, we can all agree Starfire looks ridiculous in so many ways. I still don't get this horror tone. I really hope Beast Boy's transformations don't look awful but since they haven't really shown anything other than a quick tiger that looks REALLY bad, I'm imagining the CGI is just terrible and like a video game.

Daredevil Season 3 Trailer

Darkness only responds to darkness. So emo. Hey, a hallway. Okay, so I get it, Bullseye will use the Daredevil costume and make him be a public menace and then Matt will have to struggle with rehabilitating that image while also not losing himself to being more violent. I hope it doesn't struggle. I don't want to watch 13 episodes of a show that dawdles and hits the same marks that season 2 already touched on. But it could be great.

Avengers: Annihilation

This is the latest rumor for the Avengers 4 title and I hope it isn't true. It's too generic. I've been really loving the name Avengers: Eternity War and I hope that's the case, depending on what other options are available and what the story is and such. Annihilation is so blah. Might as well be Avengers: Resurrection or Avengers: Revolutions or Avengers: Rise of Blah Blah.

Mega Man Live Action Film

I've been saying for years that they should try to do this and I think, even though it goes against the whole weird canon, if they do a sequel, it should be Mega Man X and it should just be an upgrade of the same character, not a brand new robot. Make it with a good enough budget for the CGI to not look bad, but don't make it some absurd 300 million thing, and MARKET and PROMOTE the movie once you make it, and get writers on board to craft a decent film, and don't let the studios get involved and you can get something good out of this. Don't fall victim to the poor strategies that gave us the Super Mario Bros movie.

The Mandalorian

Shame I don't like Star Wars as much anymore and I have my doubts that this series will be anything but like the rest of them, how it's "omg wouldn't it be interesting if all this stuff happened that coincidentally don't change anything about anything ever?"

Dark Avengers Coming Soon to the MCU

So the first thing to address here is that since this is the MCU, they do change elements of the comics, and you'd think fans would be more aware of that by now, but I guarantee this is going to start a bunch of discussion of people saying it's 100% guaranteed Sentry and Ares and so on will be in this. That's not necessarily the case.

However, until we get any info on just who will be on the team for this script that was commissioned, which will go through many tweaks, I'm sure, it's all up for speculation.

Sentry is an interesting character that I feel, if done right, could break out and become a mainstream contender. They just have to figure out how to handle his story and change a few things about it.

Do we get Ronin? Do they mix things up and go with a completely different setup and just call it Dark Avengers, kind of like how The Defenders really should have been Heroes for Hire to an extent, since they didn't include Hulk and company? If that's the case, does Doctor Strange take part in the Dark Avengers because his shtick is darker than someone like Spider-Man? What about a character like Wonder Man? Or U.S. Agent? Is this Secret Invasion with them hunting Skrulls?

Very interesting to see where they go with this...

Margot Robbie as Barbie

Now THIS is what a Barbie film's lead should be, not Amy Schumer. Barbie is literally synonymous with "hot blonde" and Robbie is a hot blonde, for sure. If they're looking for more nuance to avoid making the film some super boring adaptation of a vapid airhead, then Robbie also has the acting chops to bring more to the table. Anne Hathaway could've pulled it off, too, and she does look great as a blonde based off that other film I saw a trailer for recently (6 Flicks Picks) but Robbie is much more in line with what they should be going for, both in looks and acting ability.

The Flash: War Zone Season 5 Trailer

Jessica Parker Kennedy is such a good cast for being their daughter. Other than that takeaway that I've had since the first moment she popped up, this didn't do much for me. It looks as generic as it can be. A few shots are interesting, like how he has the ring now, but I'm not holding out hope that those moments will be frequent. This is a highlight reel of sorts, with lots of down time that will be interspersed.

Barbara Broccoli on a Female James Bond

She says no. "Bond is a male. He's a male character. He was written as a male and I think he'll probably stay a male. And that's fine. We don't have to turn male characters into women. Let's just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters."

Exactly!! If people are clamoring for a Female James Bond, they have three possible agendas: 1) They just want something different purely for the sake of it, which isn't the right way to go about things because I don't see anyone wishing Kill Bill could be remade with a male protagonist, 2) they purposely want to undermine men by taking something away, 3) they want to see a kick-ass female spy, which is something that I think everyone can agree would be a good thing because there's nothing bad about that equation.

If that's the case, institute a woman in one of these Bond films that is good enough to get a spinoff. Jinx Jordan wasn't good enough, but if she HAD been, people would've been cool with a movie featuring her. People liked Ilsa Faust from Mission: Impossible and she's popular enough that she was the first woman brought back outside of Michelle Monaghan. Make an Ilsa Faust for the 007 franchise, and hell, you can even make her 008 - because we've never seen 008 before - and give her a spinoff, and you're good. You don't have to make the main character Jane Bond or something.
