Fanboys Anonymous

Welcome to another edition of 6 Flicks Picks, wherein I list all of the upcoming films that are scheduled to be released in the United States for the month which is about to begin and break down which ones I'll be watching in theaters, which ones I'll wait to rent at home, and which ones I'll be skipping out on entirely. After going through the list, I'll choose which six films stand out to me as the ones I want to see the most, even if there are more or less than six that interest me.

Note: The list below is based primarily off the expanded nationwide USA release dates on IMDB as well as some other random outlets if possible, so some information may be different. If I am missing some of the limited releases or the dates conflict in some fashion, please let me know in the comments below and any adjustments and corrections will be made!

Without further ado, another new month means another new set of films, so what's coming soon to theaters in July 2018?

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Synopsis: As Scott Lang balances being both a Super Hero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.

The First Purge

Synopsis: The film will be a prequel that will focus on the events that lead up to the very first Purge event.

Whitney

Synopsis: An in-depth look at the life and music of Whitney Houston.

Will I watch? = No


Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

Synopsis: Mavis surprises Dracula with a family voyage on a luxury Monster Cruise Ship so he can take a vacation from providing everyone else's vacation at the hotel. The rest of Drac's Pack cannot resist going along. But once they leave port, romance arises when Dracula meets the mysterious ship Captain, Ericka. Now it's Mavis' turn to play the overprotective parent, keeping her dad and Ericka apart. Little do they know that his "too good to be true" love interest is actually a descendant of Abraham Van Helsing, ancient nemesis to Dracula and all other monsters.

Skyscraper

Synopsis: FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and U.S. war veteran Will Sawyer now assesses security for skyscrapers. On assignment in Hong Kong he finds the tallest, safest building in the world suddenly ablaze, and he's been framed for it. A wanted man on the run, Will must find those responsible, clear his name and somehow rescue his family who are trapped inside the building...above the fire line.

The Nun

Synopsis: A priest named Father Burke is sent to Romania to investigate the mysterious death of a nun.

Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot

Synopsis: On the rocky path to sobriety after a life-changing accident, John Callahan discovers the healing power of art, willing his injured hands into drawing hilarious, often controversial cartoons, which bring him a new lease on life.

Eighth Grade

Synopsis: A teenager tries to survive the last week of her disastrous eighth-grade year before leaving to start high school.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Synopsis: In this sequel to Mamma Mia!, Sophie learns about her mother's past while pregnant herself.

The Equalizer 2

Synopsis: Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed, but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?

Mile 22

Synopsis: An elite American intelligence officer, aided by a top-secret tactical command unit, tries to smuggle a mysterious police officer with sensitive information out of the country.

Generation Wealth

Synopsis: A documentary that investigates the pathologies that have created the richest society the world has ever seen.

Will I watch? = No


Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Synopsis: Ethan Hunt and his IMF team, along with some familiar allies, race against time after a mission gone wrong.

Will I watch? = Yes

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies

Synopsis: A villain's maniacal plan for world domination sidetracks five teenage superheroes who dream of Hollywood stardom.

Will I watch? = Maybe

Blindspotting

Synopsis: Lifelong friends Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal co-wrote and star in this timely and wildly entertaining story about the intersection of race and class, set against the backdrop of a rapidly gentrifying Oakland.

6. Skyscraper — This looks dumb as all hell, but I needed a sixth movie, and given the other options in a very small amount of releases, this overtakes the more boring and less interesting premises for me. At least I can shut my brain off and look at explosions and Movie Pass this and not feel too guilty, whereas other things like Mamma Mia will make me want to blow my brains out.

5. The Equalizer 2 — I've never seen the first one, but it looked somewhat interesting. Maybe I'll go back and check that out and then see this.

4. Teen Titans Go! To the Movies — I've only seen some clips here and there of the show, as I'm 30 and this isn't marketed to me, but my niece watches it and it seems pretty funny from what I've checked out. Naturally, as you should know by now if you've followed the site, I'm a huge DC comics fan, so when they have things like this, it'll make the list by default just because I'm interested in the adaptation aspect, if nothing else, but this seemed kind of funny.

3. The First Purge — When I saw the first Purge film, I wasn't too impressed, but for some reason, I decided to watch the second one. That was pretty damn good, and I checked out the third as a result of that, and was impressed as well. They've earned my actual money this time with a 2/3, instead of just watching it at home.

2. Mission: Impossible - Fallout — Somehow, this series gets better with every movie. Yes, I'll say that #2 is better than #1, if not just for the soundtrack, which is amazing. #3 is better than #2, #4 amps things up again, and #5 was the best one yet. I didn't even have to see a trailer to know that I would be seeing this movie. As soon as they said it was coming out, I would have bought a ticket.

1. Ant-Man and the Wasp — It's an MCU movie. I don't think I need to clarify anything else, do I? Look at this site. This is the bread and butter of Fanboys Anonymous, and for as much as I shat all over Ant-Man before it came out, assuming it would be a flop, it's enjoyable as hell and I was wrong. This, naturally, also looks good and has me sold.

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely Want M.O.D.O.K. in the MCU

They say it's too tricky, and I fully agree with them. How do you pull off even the visuals of this character, without it being too laughable? Still, at some point, we need some M.O.D.O.K. I have all the faith in the world they'll figure it out the right way. Hell, they did with Arnim Zola. Then again, they screwed up Baron Zemo, so...

Campaign to Remake The Last Jedi

Look, I want there to be a complete erase of this movie and to have a redo. But I don't buy this for one second, in any fashion. Sadly.

Lucasfilm Drops Mos Eisley Spaceport Spinoff

See, this is the type of stupid stuff I don't understand. Why did anybody think this would be a good idea for a billion dollar film? This is a standalone comic issue, not a whole big budget movie.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

That's a stupid title. I liked Homecoming, as it fit the high school idea and the homecoming of Spidey to the MCU, but Far From Home, not a fan. I don't like that they're taking Spider-Man off to another field trip. I like Spider-Man in New York, not at the Washington Monument and in Paris and whatnot. I'm also very hesitant to trust the idea of introducing another love interest and making her some hybrid of a bunch of characters like what they had done in Homecoming.

Ewan McGregor Rumored to Reprise Obi-Wan Kenobi Role in Episode IX

Good. He should have been in The Last Jedi with Yoda. And he should have been part of the quartet (along with Luke and Anakin) that revealed that Rey is either Luke's daughter that was in hiding, Han and Leia's kid that was wiped from everyone's memories by Kylo Ren and Snoke, or the next incarnation of "the chosen one" who is tasked to cleanse things again by having a kid with Kylo Ren hahaha. Then, the movie should have been completely different in multiple other ways, too. I don't understand why there wasn't at least one shot of McGregor as Kenobi in the movie, but I also don't understand why 90% of the movie was the way it was.

More LGBT Characters in the MCU

I have no problem with this, as long as it serves a purpose. In my mind, you can assume any character is straight/bi/whatever if they aren't addressed as such, and if it's not part of the plot, there's no reason to make a stance on that character's preferences. It bugs me when there's an obligatory scene where someone has to just state that they're bisexual or something merely for the sake of saying it, rather than it serving any kind of functional purpose whatsoever. Valkyrie had an implied scene where she was potentially in love with another female warrior and that had a point to it, because her death was why she left Asgard. If it had been a man, it would have served the same purpose, but who cares, so making it a woman ended up giving people who need to feel represented something to latch onto (which I think is kind of dumb, personally, but I'm a straight white male, so I apparently can't have an opinion on this, but I'm also the type of person that never looks at ANYBODY as a role model in any fashion, so I'm weird like that). My point of view: the MCU and every film and television franchise should be open to the idea of LGBT representation, but there shouldn't be any concerted efforts to force and shoehorn the idea into anything, just the same as I don't need to have any political messages or propaganda—even the things I personally agree with—put out there if it doesn't serve the story itself. The one lesbian character in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was exactly the same character to the plot with or without that line about her not being into men. That's the difference. If we have Northstar in a future X-Men film, he should be gay. Having Negasonic Teenage Warhead have a girlfriend was just as functional as if she had a boyfriend, and I didn't care one way or the other, so sure, go with Yukio. I liked Yuko. Don't just suddenly throw a scene in there where Falcon goes "By the way, I'm also gay!" for the hell of it, just the same as I don't need Black Widow going "I prefer Pepsi instead of Coca-Cola!" if it has no context. Aaaaand now that I've said all that, someone's going to read this and think I'm somehow anti-LGBT, because everyone always jumps to those extreme conclusions instead of looking at what I'm actually saying.

Legends of Tomorrow Season 4 Set for Magical Premise

Oh great. Just what I wanted. More magic stuff. I think this is going to be the season I stop watching. I've said before that I'm not a big fan of the campy nature of this program, nor has the Arrowverse really kept my favor with the way the writing went downhill. Season 2 of Arrow was my favorite, with season 1 being decent, and 3 being horrible. I stopped watching when they killed Laurel as I saw that as the point of no return. Flash season 1 was great, but it's struggled ever since then. Legends has always been something on the ropes for me and I've never liked the magic side of the DC (or Marvel) universe, and with the cast changing and the campy nature seemingly being on no path to stop, I just don't have high hopes for season 4.

Raphael is Team Leader in New Ninja Turtles Series

So the writers either don't understand the characters, or they're far too obsessed with "doing something different for the sake of it" or the whole point is to illustrate a character arc of how Raphael isn't the best leader and he passes it off to Leonardo. The whole point is that Mikey is the fun idiot, Donny is on the wimpier side but the smartest, Leo is the burdened rational leader and Raph is the strongest, but also the bitter and angry one who can't keep his emotions in check. Making Raph the leader negates Leo's purpose and likely ignores Raph's anger issues. You might as well make Anakin Skywalker the head of the Jedi Council instead of Yoda.

Welcome to the Jungle was better than I thought it would be. I'm up for another if they have the right idea.

Pennyworth Pilot

Stop it! Stop trying to do these shows where it all takes place before the story. You're going to fall into the same trap every single one of them does, where you'll introduce Batman villains that make no sense. I don't want Alfred fighting proto-Joker or a version of Solomon Grundy.

Jared Leto Cast as Morbius

I hate the Sony approach to Spider-Man and how they want to have a movie for everyone, but this is one of the exceptions. Morbius could actually potentially work as a standalone film. I would be cool with it not happening, though, and the character coming into the MCU fold elsewhere, but okay. As far as casting, no issues. I thought this was an opportunity to cast someone who isn't white, but sure, Leto could pull it off.

Another Look at Robin from Teen Titans

Yesssssss. That is how Dick Grayson / Robin should look! One of the best representations of a comic book character brought to life. Awesome.

Halo TV Series in Production

I'll check it out, maybe. I only played the first video game's multiplayer for a little bit one time, so I'm obviously not too invested in it, but I've always been curious about a live action adaptation of the story, since I'm not particularly familiar with it. Aliens and a faceless military general guy mostly, right? Totally ignorant here. But hey, maybe it'll be cool.

Season 2 of Marvel's Luke Cage is set to premiere at 3am EST on Netflix, and per usual, this post will be documenting my running commentary of thoughts as I binge-watch every episode. I'll be adding notes almost as a stream of consciousness and when everything has concluded, I'll be wrapping everything up with a full season recap and review to see just how good or bad the overall package was and the hits and misses in a Reviewpoint podcast video.

Episode 1 - "Soul Brother #1"

• So Luke Cage is a ninja now?
• Directed by Lucy Liu? Weird.
• LOL at the breakdown of the whole "he's a dark roast" and whatnot
• "The selfies, the groupies, the dick pics" - LMAO
• He came back again, too. Who is he? I'm guessing Danny Rand. I'm probably wrong.
• Shades was one of my favorite characters last season. I hope he keeps up that trend.
• LOL at the plastics exchange.
• Shades and Mariah are so gross together. Exactly what they should be. Good job, Theo and Alfre.
• It's good to see Claire again after missing her for a season. Even though I'd be okay with her getting killed off in order to make room for Jessica Jones and merging the shows to not have a full Jessica Jones season, I do like Claire.
• Who is this dude with the car? I can't remember. Am I supposed to be able to remember him?
• I really hope this exposition-heavy episode means there's less of a lag for this season. I don't want to be saying AGAIN that 13 episodes should have been cut down to 10....but I'm probably going to have to.
• Stephanie's cute.
• This young kid working at Pop's is so, so dead.
• Cockroach's pitch to Mariah was basically "I'm Black Ya'll" from CB4
• "I need my cape." / "Whatever, Power Man." - I liked that
• Shades always looks like he's trying so hard to be cool and failing. It makes me laugh.
• He fucking dabs!! LOL
• Well I'm turning on the subtitles to understand Bushmaster, that's for sure.
• Oh fuck. That knife to the eye part was pretty damn brutal.

Episode 2 - "Straighten It Out"

• I hope this whole "Judas bullet doesn't matter anymore" thing isn't as cliche as them creating a new thing just the same
• "I will deal with him when I'm ready." aka "I will give some resolution to this plotline at least a few episodes in the future. We need to stall.
• THE SHORT ARM OF THE LAW. ARTURO IS THE MAN.
• The Incident, eh? Yaaaaaaaaay reference! It's sad how little they give us to show connectivity. 
• Aw :( I wanted more of Arturo.
• Old woman wants to give Luke Cage some coffee hahaha.
• Obeah Man. Now I want to watch Meet Joe Black.
• I feel like if we cut out all the musical performances and lingering shots of Mariah looking at the musicians, we'd cut out a full episode of stalling.
• Oh my god, this scene has been like 5 minutes of nothing. It could have been accomplished in 30 seconds. We're only on episode 2 and I'm starting to feel the drag. Pleeease don't be one of those seasons.

Episode 3 - "Wig Out"

• Even with the subtitles, I'm having trouble understanding the Jamaicans. I'm glad Shades said the same thing before. Rhaatid.
• Whoa. Seet.
• Headed elsewhere. Nice.
• MORTY. LMFAO. DIP DIP YOUR TOES IN THE CONVERSATION? WTF?!
• Worldstar!
• I'd eat some piranha.
• I heard that Claire's place was a real hole in the wall, but c'mon.

Episode 4 - "I Get Physical"

• This show relishes in itself too much and spends WAY too much time taking something that could be done in a minute or so and dragging it out just so the music can tell you what you're supposed to be thinking. When done right, it can be really effective, but this is overboard.
• Totally thought the bad news was going to be that Nike dropped the deal because of the Bushmaster video.
• Wait a fucking minute, I'm still on episode 4???? This feels like it's not too far off from ending. Are they actually going to have a season where it has multiple mini-arcs instead of one big, over-elongated one? Probably not.
• Aaaand this whole legal drama is going to tie up a bunch of time.

Episode 5 - "All Souled Out"

• Please don't be what I think you're going to be. Please don't be an unnecessary side story that takes up like 3-4 episodes' worth of time for no reason other than to stall.
• Hey there Foggy.
• At least they acknowledged that Danny could pay the 100 grand.
• You're on time out? Really? Fuuuuuuuuck this dude. 
• "Who's tougher, you or the green monster?" / "That's not his name." - I appreciate the reference, but why can't you say Hulk?

Episode 6 - "The Basement"

• It's 7:45am. I'm starting to get really tired. I hope this picks up and keeps me entertained, because right now, I'm thinking I've got this episode and maybe one more before I start falling asleep.
• Hey, Warriors reference.
• Shades is the man. Just give him the keys to the kingdom.
• I don't know if it's because I'm getting sleepy, or because this is in a real lull, but I have pretty much nothing to comment on.

Episode 7 - "On and On"

• Ha. Piranhas. I get it.
• Alright, so, theories on Tilda's dad? Seems too easy to go with the cop.
• Oh great, let's have the same "You should stop being so focused on Mariah" speech again. It's not like we didn't get the gist of this the last time. 
• Also, that teeth sucking thing is always on the captions. 
• That's cold, Shades. Not cool, man. 
• If you're going to do this shit with the music taking focus and playing full songs every single episode, can you not pick songs that repeat the same goddamn line over and over again? Jesus that got annoying.

Episode 8 - "If It Ain't Rough, It Ain't Right"

• Zzzzzzzzz
• Wait, did I really just go through a whole episode with nothing at all to say?

Episode 9 - "For Pete's Sake"

• Holy shit. I'm actually excited to see Danny Rand. After that terrible season of Iron Fist, it shows how boring this season of Luke Cage has been that I'm excited to see Rand of all people. I'm really disappointed with how slow this is. If it were just a few episodes, I feel like it would be great, but it's just going at a snail's pace.
• Oh my god. Can something happen? I hate to sound like someone who comes off wanting action 24/7, but it's not even like these conversations are going anywhere but in circles!! How many times can we have the SAME conversation?
• I'm really struggling here. This isn't a show you can binge from 3am until 4pm, and I'm the type of person who usually doesn't struggle too much to stay awake for 24 hours straight. 
• Black Mariah. Finally, the name pops up. 
• Way to go both sympathetic and horrible with Mariah. I both feel bad for her and want her to bite the dust. 
• Here we go again with a repetitive song. Bushmaster. Bushmaster. Bushmaster. Bushmaster. Bushmaster. I get it. His name is Bushmaster. They've said it a million times each episode.

Episode 10 - "The Main Ingredient"

• I'm taking a break before this episode begins. I need it. Sorry.
• "Power Man and Iron Fist, that's got a good ring to it." - Ha. I get it. References. 
• Convenient that they just dropped the whole being broke thing out of nowhere. Lame.
• TURK! I was waiting on him. 

Episode 11 - "The Creator"

• So it turns out I actually fell asleep during this episode and had to go back and get caught up. That's how boring I've been finding this. A good way for me to sum things up this season is that while they might do something and then do another thing, almost none of it leads anywhere that couldn't have just been a much straighter line.
• Also, fuck yeah, Shades. Take down Mariah. You deserve to rule Harlem.

Episode 12 - "Can't Front On Me"

• I really just want this to end. Sorry for not having anything to say. It's the same stuff over and over and over again.

Episode 13 - "They Reminisce Over You"

• How is there still a whole episode left?
• Oh my god, it's nothing but the resolution of the stuff that should have been solved a long time ago.
• How is there still 25 minutes left?
• How is there still 11 minutes left?
• So we just left the whole Bobby thing, and ugh, you know what, screw this. This season was awful. I'm so ready to put it behind me.

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Hartley Sawyer to be a Series Regular for The Flash Season 5

I'm guessing this is partially because Kid Flash isn't returning and because the writers have no idea what to do with the main core cast, so they needed to introduce a fresh person just so there could be more episodes of "well, we haven't done X with THIS person yet." I did like Ralph Dibny, don't get me wrong, but I kind of can't really imagine too much of an arc for him this next season, outside of maybe finding Sue. Then again, what's the next season even going to focus on? It better not be a full 20-something episodes about one single elongated (lol) plot like the last few. I'd rather have 3 mini-seasons with shorter arcs than one giant one that gets dragged out and is annoying to sit through.

Netflix Picks up Lucifer for Season 4

FUCK YES!!!! This was one of the only shows on television that I genuinely loved, and I was really disappointed to see it get cancelled. After the support from people out there, it's so refreshing to see that it will be brought back. I know 10 episodes isn't the same as a full season of a normal network season, but that's one hell (lol) of a lot better than I was expecting, and I'm certainly not going to complain. As I just said above about The Flash having too many episodes and not enough story, I assume this means Lucifer will be able to do an even better, tighter, more concise job of telling me the same stories that I dig, and will be able to have all the fun without needing to stretch things out, so this is a great thing all around. I hope it continues past this next season, too. This is awesome! Oh, and this means they can get even more risque. Without a leash, that's even better!

Jessica Parker Kennedy to be a Series Regular for The Flash Season 5

Again, not surprised. However, at least with this one, it makes more sense to me, since that was the cliffhanger of the last season and she's literal family.

MTV Movie and TV Awards

Black Panther won Best Movie, Best Performance (Chadwick Boseman), Best Hero, Best Villain. Nice. Super glad nobody else won Best Hero, in particular.

I wouldn't have voted for Wonder Woman for Best Fight.

Disappointed Thanos didn't win Best Villain.

Big fan of Stranger Things getting some love. That show is so good. Also a big fan of Star Wars not winning anything. 

Rogue and Gambit Get Married

I haven't followed comics in a long, long time, because it's just impossible to jump in and not waste money on events that will be rebooted and such, but sure, thumbs up. I tend to like teenager Rogue more than southern belle adult Rogue, despite growing up with the animated series, but I'm not going to complain.

Disney Bids $71.3 Billion for 21st Century Fox

FOR GOD'S SAKE, JUST TAKE IT!!! JUST TAKE IT!!! We need the Fantastic Four and X-Men characters in the MCU, and Comcast can't get more powerful!!!

Creed II Trailer

I mean, they had to go with Drago's kid, right? That had to be the next direction. I'm really glad to see that's the case. It's weird that the Rocky films might not necessarily be all amazing, but I do think they tend to have some of the best transitional elements. The plot tends to make a lot of sense from film to film without rehashing too much, but still remaining cyclical. I'll be seeing this opening night for sure.

Star Wars Spinoffs Put on Hold

The problem isn't that they're doing spinoff movies. The problem is everything else! The Last Jedi really divided fans and soured them on Star Wars in general, so of course there was less of a turnout to Solo. Then, you're doing a spinoff film with a brand new person playing an iconic character, so some people are already put off about that. Then, you had virtually no advertising campaign for it. And you put it only a few months after the previous film, instead of waiting until December. And Kathleen Kennedy and everyone in charge has the wrong direction for this franchise. And maybe you shouldn't have directors who are also just as desperate to "change things up" and "put a new spin on things" just for the sake of it, even if they don't necessarily have a great idea of how to execute that. And maybe it would help if you didn't keep losing your directors and could let them finish a movie without hacking their films to pieces and replacing them?

Why would you put the films on hold before the ONE spinoff that people are actually clamoring for, with Obi-Wan Kenobi?! Why are you continually making stupid decisions?!!

Marvel TV Shows Will Ignore Avengers: Infinity War

Of course they will. I mean, it's not like they're in the same connected universe or anything, right? So stupid. I hate how the TV division can't figure out ways to follow the movies.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

I hate to be so cynical, but The Last Jedi really ruined things for me, and when you tell me a video game is going to follow the events of a Padawan that survived Order 66, my first thoughts are "Neat, but it doesn't matter cause it will only lead to The Empire coming back when Luke fails to reestablish the Jedi Order and this will be a character that never pops up anywhere and serves no functional purpose."

Admittedly, I'm not a gamer. Every time there was some kind of big news, I had no idea what any of that meant, or it was something I didn't care about. Still, that Spider-Man game looks good, and I'm glad all of the Smash Bros characters are available to pick from. That's how things should progress in 2018 (and should have been years ago). People want the most bang for their buck. They like crossovers and options. Credit to Nintendo for pulling off what people always want. It's the same for how everyone is constantly talking about wanting a Pokemon game that allows you to catch all of them and go through every town from every game. Virtually impossible, but you get the idea.

Deathstroke in Suicide Squad 2

DC doesn't seem to be able to get past rumors and announcements for any of their projects, so I'm taking this and all other ones with a grain of salt, but the current report says Deathstroke will either fight the Suicide Squad or join them against the villains. I'd rather see both. I'd like Deathstroke to challenge for leadership and have in-fighting, and then join up with them against whatever the other menace is.

Hal Jordan and John Stewart for Green Lantern Corps

Well, last week, I had said I liked the idea of Jessica Cruz, but despite how that works out for an angle of diversity, I do think Jordan and Stewart are the two most prominent Green Lantern members. Very glad it isn't Guy Gardner, as that character sucks. Kyle Rayner, meh, he's someone I think serves no real functional purpose and could be merged with the other ones. That's my issue with the Green Lantern series. If you had one or two GLs with the combined stories and character traits as the other members, it would be much better than splitting everyone. Jordan is cocky, Gardner is an asshole but you can just merge that with Jordan's cockiness, Stewart is a hard-ass so he's different, Rayner is a boy scout from my POV but that's a bit unnecessary, I know nothing about Baz and Cruz, but from what I gather, Baz is a bit more violent, right? Maybe make him a Red Lantern. Cruz, maybe combine her with Rayner and make her the younger recruit and an idealist or something? I'm rambling. Jordan/Stewart as a buddy cop film works for me.

Fuck. I hate this, and I knew it would happen right after this net neutrality ordeal. I hate how much this country is run by corporations. This better not lead to Comcast getting Fox's assets. Disney needs them instead. At least when it comes to Disney, we get an upgrade to Marvel. We get nothing positive with Comcast—a company I absolutely hate. I can't wait for 2020...

George Lucas Reveals Original Plans for Episode VII

They were "going to get into a microbiotic world" and deal with the Whills, who "actually control the universe. They feed off the Force." Well, at least he acknowledges that "a lot of the fans would have hated it, just like they did Phantom Menace and everything, but at least the whole story from beginning to end would be told."

Now, I absolutely hate the direction the films have gone, but I hate this, too. At the very least, I would be interested to know just what Lucas had in mind, cause despite the whole midichlorians thing being stupid, maybe the actual story would have been better than "idk, how about we just have The Empire come back and another Rebellion, but change their names and shit, and make everything Luke and company did completely pointless as we're just resetting everything back to A New Hope with a new cast?"

Cheetah's Arc in Wonder Woman 1984

Apparently, she'll be Diana's friend, who gets cheetah powers and goes berserk. Meh. I don't know if I really want to see that. I'll be okay with it if Circe is the person who gives her her powers, and she's the real villain of it, but that doesn't seem to necessarily be the case. Also, setting the movie in 84 just seems like a weird decision to me. Until I see something that proves otherwise, I'm getting the feeling it was done just for the sake of "wouldn't it be interesting? I love the 80s!" and nothing more.

Aquaman Set Photos and Magazine Cover

Neat. Still not sold that this is going to be a good movie, but I'll obviously be checking it out. Realistically, it will probably be the best Aquaman film we'll ever get, but is that really saying much?

Welcome everyone to the relaunch of an old segment here from Fanboys Anonymous, called WEEK IN GEEK.

In the past, this used to act as an all-inclusive breakdown of the smaller topics throughout the week in all realms of the site, but as you can tell, I've been transitioning to a smaller focus and pretty much a one-man operation here, so instead of this having categories for Movies, TV, Comics, Music and so forth, I'm changing the format a bit.

I've wanted to get my opinions out there about a ton of topics, but I never have the time to dedicate full articles to each of them. So as a bit of a compromise, Week in Geek is going to act as my delivery system for those opinions. Anything that has gone on over the past few days that I feel like voicing my opinions about, I'll be putting here, and it will be a weekly post put out every Friday or so.

In the future, if I can find the resources to dedicate to it, I'll be transitioning this to a podcast as well to be able to go into more detail about certain things and have guests on to talk about them, but for now, that's on the backburner.

Without further ado, let's dive into some of the most recent topics in geek culture I want to talk about!

Ralph Breaks the Internet Trailer

I'm concerned this is just going to be a bunch of references to internet memes and such, but I'm going to see the movie, as the first was good.

Helena Bonham Carter = James Bond Villain?

Yes. Do it. Give her a cast of like 3 more villains to go along with her (one being a brute henchman, one being a threat in a gun scene sense and one that you can kill off in a car chase) and give me Carter as the intelligent leader of them. Also, if we're talking Bond film stuff, I'd love for Sting to do the main theme and keep up the trend of the style of things like Skyfall's theme. Those are my favorite Bond songs; not the rock ones. And I'd be super cool with introducing 008 and making him Idris Elba. And while we're talking about casting, maybe Freida Pinto is the good Bond girl in it? ...do we need another Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film? I feel like Gosling would be too dry, Miller would be too much like Johnny Depp, and Glover should be focusing his talents on other projects instead of spending time on this movie.

Keiynan Lonsdale Exits The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow

Kid Flash really was pushed aside this past season, and I thought it was because they had nothing for him to do, but it's disappointing to see that it's because Lonsdale just wants to move on. I was hoping he'd stick around, and I'm still hoping he pops up once in a while for cameos and such. At the very least, he was a more than welcome addition to Legends of Tomorrow, as I'm struggling to find a reason to continue watching that show. I don't like the campy nature of it. Never have. I know that that means it's most likely "not for me" but I'm trying to keep giving it a chance to step away from Doctor Who and go more into some cool stuff. Kid Flash being on that show helped it out a bit for me, and with him not being even on that, I don't know...

Thoughts on Cloak and Dagger Premiere

It's a little too soap opera for me and I'm not liking any of the characters enough to really get invested, but I'm going to try to give it a few episodes before signing off.

First Look at Addams Family Animated Movie

That art style is awful. I don't care if it looks like the original. It looks stupid. The proportions are insane. Gomez and Fester, in particular, look so weird. Why does Wednesday have such a stretched out head? Lurch is cool, though.

Kelly Marie Tran's Social Media Harassment / Kathleen Kennedy May Step Down

Look, I hated The Last Jedi for its philosophy behind the franchise, the fact that they clearly haven't planned this out well, and that the ruined the entire story of what came before. I absolutely hate it, and it's legitimately soured my love of the whole series, to a point where I simply don't enjoy any of it anymore—even the stuff from before.

I think they're a little too focused on this SJW type of mentality to the point that it hindered their ability to tell a functional story, and that Finn is the only good new character (yes, I said it), with Rose most likely being the absolute worst of the bunch. But holy shit, even if I feel that badly about the series, I'm not taking my frustrations out on Kelly Marie Tran. She didn't write the damn thing.

People who start going on racist tirades and stuff are ridiculous. People who don't like the movies just because the new protagonist is a woman are absurd. People who are mad at the Rose character for being Asian...really? Are you serious?

Kathleen Kennedy does need to step down, though, as I think The Force Awakens only made as much money as it did because it was the first new Star Wars film, and Rogue One was a curiosity factor as well, but The Last Jedi really pissed off a lot of people and Solo was interesting, but not necessarily "good", so she's certainly not pulling a Kevin Feige here.

Green Lantern Corps Could Focus on Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz

Even though the purist in me wishes we had Hal Jordan, because he's the most consequential Green Lantern, I fully support the interest in focusing on making things more diverse. I never liked Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner is okay in my book, but John Stewart is my #2 GL based off the animated series. However, I think having only Wonder Woman on the team is a bit of an underestimation of women, and even though I don't know anything about Jessica Cruz, I do like the idea of using her as the main GL. Simon Baz, well, I don't know much about him, either, but I think the trick here is to make Green Lantern Corps an ensemble piece with the protagonist being Jessica. Guy can be an asshole, Stewart can be a hard-ass military dude, Hal can be his normal self, etc.

Comcast Still Wants FOX

Stop it. Stop that. FOX needs to sell to Disney and nobody else, so we can get the Fantastic 4 and X-Men characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. None of this Comcast shit. Knock it off.

The Batman's Villain is The Penguin?

I really hope not, bu if we do get Penguin, I hope it's more of the businessman type.

I was hoping the villain for this film would be a combination of Red Hood and Deathstroke. I think it would be great if the plot were Red Hood looking for vengeance, coming back from the dead, training with Deathstroke, and we can get Nightwing in the movie. That way, we have Batman and Nightwing against Deathstroke and Red Hood. And Barbara Gordon can make an appearance, too, to set up her involvement in Birds of Prey, which should totally revolve around Batgirl, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Black Canary and Huntress.

Kick-Ass Reboot and/or More Films to Come

Give me Kick-Ass 3 and finish out the story. Don't give me a reboot. Don't give me an origin story for Hit-Girl.

Also, Kingsman: The Golden Circle was a major let down for me. If you're going to do a third film, you need to bring Roxy back, or I'll be pissed. She shouldn't have been killed off at all. No reason for it whatsoever. Sad Merlin had to go, but I'm more okay with that than Roxy's death.

Trailer for New Halloween Film

Horror films aren't my thing, but I've seen a couple of Halloween films. Trying to go back and act as if the sequels and reboots and stuff didn't happen is most likely a good thing, but I don't think it'll save the movie from the tropes that will probably create the same flaws that almost all of these films have. Still, that theme song is so dope and I'm more interested in this than I am the past bunch of Halloween films that have come out in X amount of years.

DC Universe Digital Streaming Service Coming in August?

I have no idea if August is a good launch time for it, but Titans looks like it has the Batman aspect 100% down and the rest of it 100% awful. I'm really curious what will happen with that show. This streaming service isn't something that I can imagine a lot of people signing up for, but if they include all of the animated films they've been producing, as well as all of the DC movies that they've ever created, and they create content where people do those animated comic book voiceover things, then maybe it could be decent. It better be $4.99 or at most, $9.99, though. If it's anything more, nobody is going to buy it.

Welcome to another edition of 6 Flicks Picks, wherein I list all of the upcoming films that are scheduled to be released in the United States for the month which is about to begin and break down which ones I'll be watching in theaters, which ones I'll wait to rent at home, and which ones I'll be skipping out on entirely. After going through the list, I'll choose which six films stand out to me as the ones I want to see the most, even if there are more or less than six that interest me.

Uncle Drew

Synopsis: After draining his life savings to enter a team in the Rucker Classic street ball tournament in Harlem, Dax (Lil Rel Howery) is dealt a series of unfortunate setbacks, including losing his team to his longtime rival (Nick Kroll). Desperate to win the tournament and the cash prize, Dax stumbles upon the man, the myth, the legend UNCLE DREW (NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving) and convinces him to return to the court one more time. The two men embark on a road trip to round up Drew's old basketball squad (Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie) and prove that a group of septuagenarians can still win the big one. After a successful five years as a fan-favorite digital episodic series, originally conceived by Pepsi, UNCLE DREW, will hit theaters June 29, 2018. 6. Ocean's 8 — I only saw the first of the original...I mean, of the remake...and I'm not into this all that much, but considering the other choices, I'd pick this over Action Point or Won't You Be My Neighbor, which were the only two other ones in the running.

5. Upgrade — The premise sounds interesting, at least.

4. Sicario: Day of the Soldado — I haven't seen the first, but it looked good, so maybe I'll watch that and then watch this.

3. Incredibles 2 — Admittedly, I didn't love the first one as much as most people, but I did like it, so there's no reason why I wouldn't see this.

2. Tag — This seems so stupid, but fun. Why not?

Normally, I tend to do the Fanboys Anonymous REVIEWPOINT segment in podcast form, but for Deadpool 2, I happen to be in a position where my equipment isn't readily available and an editorial is much more convenient, so indulge me in a written form of this type of breakdown.

Wisecracking mercenary Deadpool battles the evil and powerful Cable and other bad guys to save a boy's life.

Deadpool 2 is the type of movie that you know well in advance if you want to see it or not. If you watched the first one and enjoyed it, you're going to want to watch this, of course. Equally, if you thought the first was awful, didn't enjoy the humor, didn't get the references or anything along those lines, there's literally no reason for you to watch the sequel, as you're mostly getting the same type of vibe.

However, it is different from the first in that it seems to have more of a cinematic "normal movie" style to it, instead of the aesthetic from the first one.

Admittedly, this was a bit disappointing to me. It felt like this film didn't have as many jokes as the first one, and I didn't enjoy some of the characters as much this time around, nor some of the new additions.

For instance, Russell was more on the annoying side to me than a source of a lot of fun. I tend to think a good portion of that was down to the actor himself, but maybe some of the blame rests on the script.

I liked Cable, but he didn't feel 100% like Cable to me. Maybe in an X-Force film, I guess. Domino was okay, but not too crazy of a standout. I think she's getting a little too overhyped as some major revelation, whereas I thought she was just fine.

Colossus was neat, as always. Negasonic Teenage Warhead wasn't much of a presence in this film, sadly. I would have liked to see more of her, although I did laugh at the Yukio and Deadpool relationship.

Random side note that doesn't have to do with this movie itself, but I went to see it with my girlfriend in 4DX and even though that was fun in the sense of a different experience, I definitely don't think that gimmick was worth it. If you're considering doing that, I'd recommend reconsidering. After the third time air was blown into my ear to represent a gunshot, I got bored of the experience and would have rather just had a better screen.

That being said, I still enjoyed the movie and I still laughed pretty damn hard at certain moments in particular.

I loved the James Bond style intro sequence (along with the song, Ashes). Speaking of music, I'm definitely getting that version of Take On Me for sure.

After having set up their relationship in the first film, the dynamic between Wade and Vanessa was surprisingly sweet in a way I didn't expect it to be.

Without getting into more specifics, I would say that this didn't live up to my expectations, but it was still a fine movie that I'd give a thumbs up to.


Onward to the spoilers section, we can start talking about actual details that stood out to me.

I was a fan of pretty much every little wink and nod, and I really wish they had put more of that type of humor in it, as, like I mentioned before, I didn't think there was anywhere near as many this time around.

The Vanisher, played by Brad Pitt? Hilarious.

Peter was funny, too, but I think they killed that joke with the commercials, as by this point, if you've watched those, you've seen most of his scenes.

Killing off Vanessa was sad, even though I saw it coming from a mile away as soon as it seemed like a sequel film was going to happen, but I'm really happy that they went with the end credit sequence of Wade going back in time and completely undoing everything so that she's still alive. Great decision.

Fucking Juggernaut? Dude, I've always been a fan of that character and it was interesting to see him being treated like a true monster.

Big thumbs down to Russell, as I said. I didn't think his jokes were funny, and I think recasting and going with a different actor would have maybe saved some of them.

I liked how the name of the hospital was Essex, but didn't like the villains of that side of the story. They didn't do much for me.

Blind Al, solid. Weasel, not as good as last time and it seemed like T.J. Miller and/or the writers just didn't try with him. Dopinder was a step down a bit, I think, and lost some of his charm by trying to be a little too funny.

Actually, that is part of the impression I got from a few things, where it suffered from the comedy sequel problems I've seen in plenty of other series. When you take a joke from the previous movie and improve on it, it's fantastic, but if it doesn't land, it is worse than if you didn't have that joke. Some people LOVED the segment dealing with his baby legs, but I wasn't one of those people, so that felt like it went on way too long in my mind.

Flipping back to a positive, though, I absolutely loved the quick cameo of Beast, Quicksilver and other X-Men characters being in the mansion and just shutting the door. I also was a huge fan of the joke that X-Men is a dated metaphor for discrimination in the '60s or whatever the line was. That got a big laugh out of me.

Black Tom Cassidy? So weird that we have seen him in live action movie form and we still haven't seen Avalanche. Very cool to throw him in the movie, even for just a throwaway part like that.

Generally speaking, this was a case of something that I was hoping would be a laugh riot that I really absolutely loved, and I didn't, but I don't subscribe to the idea that everything has to be either the best or worst thing ever. There are gray areas, and when it comes to Deadpool 2, I think it goes around to different shades here and there.

Overall, I do say see it, but I have to admit that I'm not as enthusiastic as I thought I would be, nor even as enthusiastic as I was while leaving the theater last night. After giving myself a day to think about it, I'm a little more down on the film than I was, but who knows what I'll think upon a second viewing. I may even like it more.

6. I would just watch Avengers: Infinity War again as a carryover from April. I can't even pick another option here, because I really don't even see myself seeing #3 or #4 and at this point, fuck it, I'd rather spend my money watching Infinity War again because it was just so awesome.

5. I would just watch Avengers: Infinity War again for the THIRD time, but if you're going to not let me, then maybe I'd watch Rampage as I never got a chance to see that. Nothing more on this list, though.

4. Dark Crimes — I hope Jim Carrey is actually really good in this, even though I won't be seeing it. I'd just rather see this than some of the other things.

3. Bad Samaritan — Let's put it this way. I'm not going to see this movie. However, if I were to have to see a couple of movies more this month, this would be one of them, because it's at least trying something different. There are too many films that are of a drama topic that I'm just not interested in and I'd never be able to sit through patiently. At least with this, it's kind of neat.

2. Solo: A Star Wars Story — The Last Jedi really, really soured me on the Star Wars franchise. I went from absolutely loving it and putting it in a league above its own, to just feeling like I'm not a fan anymore. This film is hindered by coming up next, and it also just doesn't look good, and it also has problems with its production. Still...
