Lethal Weapon TV Series Pilot Episode 1 Review & First Impressions

Posted by Anthony Mango - Thursday, September 22, 2016

Welcome to the latest edition of Making the Grade—a review format segment here on Fanboys Anonymous where we break down the five major components of something and give it a score based on the standard report card lineup: A, B, C, D, and F for a total failure.

The next report card is for the new television series Lethal Weapon, based on the film franchise of the same name.

But first, a little backstory...

I was first introduced to the film franchise with Lethal Weapon 4, oddly enough. Anybody who knows me knows that I am a bit of a stickler for watching films in the proper order, making sure I don't miss even the first 30 seconds of a movie or a television episode the first time I'm watching it, and so on. In 1998, however, a friend of mine wanted to go to the movies and we hadn't decided on what to see, but at the last minute, he pitched the idea of Lethal Weapon 4. Being 11 years old, I hadn't seen the previous films as I just didn't get around to it, but I naturally wasn't going to protest, so I saw it and it was just okay. For years, I had ingrained the idea in my mind that I disliked the movie and thought it was a generic action film, so I put off watching the other three in any capacity as I thought I would hate them and equate them to things like The Transporter and The Fast and the Furious as just mindless action nonsense. Thankfully, I sat down one day a few years ago and watched the first Lethal Weapon and enjoyed it so much, I watched #2, #3 and #4 within the next 48 hours. It surpassed my previous generalizations and assumptions by a long shot, and now I hold it in high enough regard that when I heard the TV show was happening, I was skeptical for a number of reasons. One of the biggest reasons was because I just went through this with Minority Report and Rush Hour—two shows that I thought sucked hard even though I really enjoyed the movies they were inspired by.

Is this another one of those, or is it on par with the original film franchise? Let's start the review of episode 1, "Pilot".

WARNING - SPOILERS BELOW

STORY: A

Thankfully, the story is the same. Roger Murtaugh is a veteran cop who is too old for this shit (although they have to avoid saying that, since it's on network television, which sucks) and he's paired with the loose cannon Martin Riggs, who is suicidal after losing his wife and their unborn child. The two form a bond and eventually, Riggs finds a new family in Murtaugh's. Also, they're cops, so they take down bad guys, if you didn't figure that out already.

In theory, if I liked the originals and their story, I can't dislike this. It's the same thing. The only thing that will play a factor is how they pull it off. So far, this feels rushed because they only had 45 minutes to do what the first film did in 110 as well as three more films afterward.

CHARACTERS/ACTING: C

So here's the thing—I can't dock the show points for most of the characters, as the ideas are the same. However, I do have some bones to pick.

First, why are certain characters given new names? Martin's deceased ex was Victoria Lynn, but now she's Miranda? I'm totally okay with Floriana Lima being cast in the role, as she's beautiful and she quickly was able to make me feel sympathetic about her character's death in one scene, but there's nothing that prevented her from being named Victoria Lynn Riggs instead of Miranda Riggs.

The same applies to Jordana Brewster as Dr. Maureen Cahill. She's a beautiful woman, a good actress, and I like her character—yet she should have been named Dr. Stephanie Woods, which was the department's psychiatrist in the four films. They can adjust some character elements (like possibly having more of a romantic relationship with Riggs in the television show than in the movies), as they need to stretch some things out, but I can't see a benefit of changing the name. That would be like making Roger Murtaugh's family not being Trish, Rianne, Nick, and Carrie—wait a minute, Rianne is now Riana, Nick is Roger Jr, and Carrie went from being the oldest to a newborn baby with no name?

The acting is something else that doesn't quite click. I do enjoy Keesha Sharp as Trish Murtaugh quite a bit, but I think she might be the only improvement to the originals. Damon Wayans is a good actor, yet he's no Danny Glover as Murtaugh. I know nothing of Clayne Crawford, but he's no Mel Gibson as Martin Riggs.

We don't have Leo Getz yet, but that might be a good thing, so long as they find someone to properly portray the character and fit into the show down the line at some point. Scorsese seems to be filling part of that vibe right now, and I'm not digging him yet, nor do I really have an opinion one way or the other about the captain or chief or whatever his ranking is. He's just a guy.

VISUALS (FX, MAKEUP, COSTUMES, SETS): B+

It's a television show, which means it's not going to look as good as a movie, but it's also a 2016 show, which means it's not going to look as bad as a film from 1987. These things basically balance each other out. It's fine for what it is and hopefully the production quality doesn't downgrade after the pilot.

MUSIC & SOUND: C

Boy do I miss Michael Kamen's score. Do yourself a favor and listen to the soundtrack from the films rather than the generic placeholder music here from Ben Decter and Josh Kramon. "It's Probably Me" by Sting and Eric Clapton is one of my favorite songs, and I didn't expect that to be anywhere near this show, but the main themes should have carried over as they had such versatility. Here is the song "In Memoriam Victoria Lynn" which shows how sad Riggs' theme can be, while this version is happier but keeps the same character beats.

This show had nothing of the sort, and everything was just bland. There wasn't anything offensive or "bad" about it, but seeing how they already had a great score to work with and chose not to is disappointing. Change is only good when it improves upon what came before it, not when it makes it worse.

TONE & ATMOSPHERE: A

ACTION: They had car chases, a sniper scene, some shootouts, and a hostage situation. Yup, that's on par.

COMEDY: There were mainly two sources of comedy from the films, which were 1) the relationship between Riggs and Murtaugh, 2) Leo Getz. Since we don't have Getz on the show yet, it all falls on the principle premise of the show, and it worked rather well. It still felt like the chemistry between the two was nowhere near as good as the film, but maybe it'll get there eventually. At the very least, it still works conceptually, even if the execution needs tweaking.

ROMANCE: The nature of the series is pretty much a 50/50 split between Murtaugh's solid marriage and Riggs' complete void due to his depressing circumstances. That carried over well in the pilot and it looks like they understand the tone they should be going for. I'm curious to see if and when they introduce Rika Van Den Haas (side note: Patsy Kensit sure was hot, wasn't she?) and Lorna Cole (side note: Renee Russo sure was sexy, too, wasn't she?) for Riggs in the future. I'd love to see that happen down the line maybe in season 2 and 3 if the show gets that far.

FINAL GRADE: B

I thought this was going to be much worse than it was, but I was also hoping it would be much better than what the final product turned out to be. If this had a different name attached to it, I wouldn't have given it a chance. The downside when it comes to carrying on the legacy of something that came before it means that I also compare it to the films and it doesn't measure up. Basically, I have to imagine if you liked the films, you should give this a chance because you might like the show as a sort of "parallel universe" version that might be watered down and not as good, but it's still better than watching a straight ripoff. I'll be giving it a few more episodes before I choose whether or not to keep it on my weekly viewing list. There's definitely potential, although I'm not sold quite yet...and now, I just want to watch the movies and listen to the soundtrack.

6 Flicks Picks for September 2016 Movie Release Schedule

Posted by Anthony Mango - Thursday, September 1, 2016

Welcome to another edition of 6 Flicks Picks, wherein I list all of the upcoming films that are scheduled to be released in the United States for the month which is about to begin and break down which ones I'll be watching in theaters, which ones I'll wait to rent at home, and which ones I'll be skipping out on entirely. After going through the list, I'll choose which six films stand out to me as the ones I want to see the most, even if there are more or less than six that interest me.

Note: The list below is based primarily off the expanded nationwide USA release dates on IMDB as well as some other random outlets if possible, so some information may be different. If I am missing some of the limited releases or the dates conflict in some fashion, please let me know in the comments below and any adjustments and corrections will be made!

Without further ado, another new month means another new set of films, so what's coming soon to theaters in September 2016?

6 FLICKS PICKS

Which films make the cut?

6. The 9th Life of Louis Drax — This was tough, as I almost gave this spot to Before I Wake or When the Bough Breaks or even Goat as they all have just as much of an intriguing side to them as this one does. Basically, it came down to a few flips of a coin and the "what if?" element of this won out.

5. Morgan — I'm not too into this overall, where I might skip it entirely, but this is a rather weak month compared to some others and it stands out as something more along the lines of what I would like than many other options. There's no way I'd choose something like Queen of Katwe over this.

4. Nerve — I like Dave Franco, I think Emma Roberts is cute, and the previews were catching my attention with this augmented reality concept. This could be a good mid-day cheap watch.

3. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children — Damn it, Burton, don't end up making me regret it if I watch this. If I check it out, it better be another Edward Scissorhands or Beetlejuice instead of another...well...pretty much everything else.

2. The Magnificent Seven — I don't normally dig westerns, but there's something about this that has me interested. It might just be the cast.

1. Snowden — The true story behind this is interesting to me, and I have a feeling this could have some Oscar buzz around it, at least for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who definitely has to win an Academy Award at some point.

Fall 2016 TV Show Premiere Dates Schedule for September

Posted by Anthony Mango - Wednesday, August 31, 2016

It's always a little difficult to keep track of the new television shows coming out every year, particularly as there's no set time when they have to have their premiere. We now live in a VOD era where people binge shows months after they've debuted or at least DVR and watch them several hours later or the next day, so much of the excitement of checking something out when it first hits the airwaves has gone away. Still, nothing beats when you can be part of the palpable energy of a new show (or film) in the first few hours of when people can see it. As such, to help those who have no idea what the upcoming television schedule looks like, here's a quick reference guide to as many of the shows coming back in September.

Pokémon That Were Given the Wrong Types (Generation 1)

Posted by Anthony Mango - Saturday, August 13, 2016

Pokémon Go has taken over the world and lately, most of the chatter has been about the various issues going on with the tracking system, server crashes and more. With that on my mind along with random news from the upcoming Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon games, I've had Pokémon on my mind a lot more than normal, and some things are starting to bug me when I'm looking back on my childhood.

Hindsight is everything, but it doesn't take 20 years to realize that some mistakes from the Pokémon series never should have happened to begin with. There are a multitude of problems here and there throughout the franchise, ranging from minor flaws such as the name Feraligatr not being able to fit correctly to major errors like the MissingNo glitch. We can debate all day on the poor decision to make the reward for catching all 150 Pokémon just being a stupid certificate and the random appearance of that damn truck near the S.S. Anne, but the subject matter of this article is going to focus on Pokémon that were given the wrong types based off what their characters represent.

list of Pokemon with wrong typing

Since there are over 700 Pokémon at this point in time, this is going to focus on the set that kicked off the series, Generation 1: Green, Red, Blue, Yellow and their subsequent remakes of Leaf Green and Fire Red. If you'd like to see more articles and for this to become a mini-series that covers the rest, let us know in the comments below.

Note: It's important to keep in mind that things like the Dark, Steel and Fairy types were introduced later on, and this is all assuming Game Freak could go back and retcon types just as they did when those were included. Clefairy used to be a Normal type, but is now Fairy, which makes perfect sense, and this series is going to work under the thought process that even more changes should be made.

#006. Charizard
Current Type = Fire/Flying
New Type = Fire/Dragon

I understand the choice to make Charizard a Flying type instead of a Dragon type, but this list wouldn't be complete if the idea wasn't at least presented. After all, it's a fire-breathing dragon, so it's a logical decision for it to be a Dragon type, right? The downside is that it makes Charizard even better in comparison to Venusaur and Blastoise, so nobody would have ever picked those two. At least one of its Mega Evolution forms has the Dragon type, so that makes things better.

#030-#034. The Nidoran Evolution Lines
Current Type = Poison/Ground
New Type = Poison/Dark

Both the male and female Nidoran tree goes from a pure Poison type to eventually a Poison/Ground with Nidoqueen and Nidoking. Considering they're based off some sort of rabbit, they should be pure Normal in theory, but even if they decided to go with the Poison route, why are they part Ground later on? I think it makes much more sense to me for them to have been a Dark type to show off why they get so fierce looking. Nidoking is one of the most vicious Pokémon in appearance and there's nothing to tie it into the Ground type. There aren't many options for Pokémon that could have been Dark from Gen 1, but Nidoking and Nidoqueen fit the bill to me. Also, they evolve with a Moon Stone. The moon is out at night, when it's dark. Fits, doesn't it?

#038. Ninetails
Current Type = Fire
New Type = Fire/Fairy

As soon as the Alolan Form of Vulpix and Ninetails came out as Ice/Fairy, it dawned on me that Ninetails should be part Fairy type even in its Fire version. It's a majestic creature and there aren't currently any other Pokémon with this dual-type setup. If not Fairy, then Psychic, for sure.

#053. Persian
Current Type = Normal
New Type = Normal/Dark

This is more of an adjustment than a lot of the other things on this list, but it's something to ponder about. If there was a necessity to add more Dark types into the game, Persian's design could have been altered a bit to make it a black cat, which would go well with the bad luck superstitions that can tie into that typing. Of course, if the Dark type doesn't need any more, then by all means, Persian's fine the way it is as just a regular cat that isn't useful for anything other than the Pay Day attack.

#055. Golduck/Psyduck
Current Type = Water
New Type = Water/Psychic

First off, let's address the names. Clearly, Golduck and Psyduck should switch. Why is the gold duck not Golduck and the psychic duck not Psyduck? It makes even less sense than the Venomoth/Butterfree switch, which shouldn't have happened either. Under this retcon, #054 should be Golduck which would be pure Water type, and then it would grow into its psychic powers to become Psyduck, which would add the Psychic type to its cause. Keep this in mind later on when I switch up Starmie and the Slowpoke line, as we can't have too many Water/Psychic types in the same game.

#069. Bellsprout + #070. Weepinbell + #071. Victreebel
Current Type = Grass/Poison
New Type = Grass/(Dark)

There are far too many Grass/Poison types and there's no need for this trio to be the exact equivalent of the Oddish line. Gloom and Vileplume look like they would be poisonous, but Bellsprout's line doesn't seem so bad. Without a doubt, they're the Grass type, but why aren't they just pure Grass, which would help stave off some of the weaknesses. Only Tangela is pure Grass in Generation 1 and this trio would have worked well to give the Grass type something halfway decent that wasn't weak to Psychic, Ground and so much more. But if we're going to say Victreebel is dangerous and potentially "evil" in that sense, then it makes more sense to give it the Dark type to go along with it. I'd probably stick to just Grass, but I'm fine with Grass/Dark.

#074. Geodude + #075. Graveler + #076. Golem
Current Type = Rock/Ground
New Type = Rock/Fighting

Just as there are too many Grass/Poison, why was every single Rock type in Generation 1 also a Ground type? That made it 4x weak to water and grass, which made them pretty useless to put up in a fight with a good portion of the opposing forces. If you look at Geodude and its evolutions, they all are prominently displaying fists, and I think that would lend itself well to its supplemental type being Fighting. It took until #639 Terrakion for there to be a Rock/Fighting type and it should have happened much sooner.

#079. Slowpoke + #080. Slowbro
Current Type = Water/Psychic
New Type = Water/Normal

If the gimmick of Slowpoke is that it's some kind of a salamander hippo hermit crab otter thing with an incredibly low intelligence, why is it part Psychic type? There's nothing psychic about that type of an animal and it should be as far away from associated with things like Alakazam and Mewtwo on the IQ spectrum as possible. That's why it needs to be the Normal type instead. If Dark meant dim, that would work, but it is more linked with being evil than dumb, so Normal would have to suffice. Slowking later on could be Water/Psychic to compensate for its boost in mental capabilities, but Slowpoke and Slowbro should stay slow.

#084. Doduo + #085. Dodrio
Current Type = Normal/Flying
New Type = Normal/(Ground)

This is so easy. Why are flightless birds part Flying type? There are more than enough Normal/Flying in the game where that wasn't a combination that needed to be represented anymore. There's already the Pidgey and Spearow lines as well as Farfetch'd (which an argument can be made should have been Flying/Grass to compensate for the leek it always carries around, but we'll let that slide) so Doduo and Dodrio should have been pure Normal birds. Also, there should have been another with just one head named Doduno. If anything, maybe Normal/Ground to emphasize how it can't fly.

#092. Gastly + #093. Haunter + #094. Gengar
Current Type = Ghost/Poison
New Type = Ghost

It baffles me that there are only 3 Ghost-type Pokémon in the entire first game and that they are somehow all part Poison as well, making them weak to the one thing they're supposed to be able to nerf, which is the Psychic types. This was just such a stupid mistake to make, and there's no justification in my mind for why they had Poison added to them. Nothing about ghosts is directly tied to poison. If anything, they should be Ghost/Dark!

#105. Marowak
Current Type = Ground
New Type = Ground/Fighting

I can see having Cubone be pure Ground, but once it evolves into something with "whack" in its name which is also essentially known for striking things with its bone, it should be part Fighting for sure.

#111. Rhyhorn + #112. Rhydon
Current Type = Ground/Rock
New Type = Rock

Correct me if I'm wrong, but these are just rhinos, right? Since we have the Ground/Rock or Rock/Ground type covered in Onix, but no pure Rock types, this should have been the duo that didn't add Ground into the mix.

#113. Chansey
Current Type = Normal
New Type = Fairy

Is this a little obvious? Sure. Is it treading on the same ground as Jigglypuff and Clefairy? Of course. But hey, that's what you get when you put 3 evolutionary lines of pink, fairy-like Pokémon in the same generation. I can buy Chansey being pure Normal if Blissey is Normal/Fairy, but why not just make it a pure Fairy type to start off with anyway? We already have our necessary HP tank Normal type in Snorlax, so it's not like Chansey needs to fit that bill, and with it having so many healing properties and being the chosen caregiver for the Pokémon Center, Fairy fits its modus operandi.

#115. Kangaskhan
Current Type = Normal
New Type = Normal/Fighting

Kangaroos are known to fight. Just look at any cartoon of them with boxing gloves and you have your reason why this should be a Fighting type in at least some capacity. Keep the Normal type if you want to add some variety, but Fighting should be a necessity and such an obvious choice. I'd make the argument that Kangaskhan was supposed to be the evolution of Marowak and thus, Ground/Fighting, even.

#121. Starmie
Current Type = Water/Psychic
New Type = Water/Fairy

With Psyduck covering the Water/Psychic typing, Slowpoke, Slowbro and Starmie don't need to do the same thing. I don't see anything that specifically ties Starmie into the Psychic type, but I also kind of understand it as well. This one is the toughest to justify of the bunch, as it could very well stay Water/Psychic and not seem like it's crowding that market. Maybe it could be Water/Fairy, though, since its bejeweled? Maybe Water/Dark if it has a more evil connotation to its gem. If anyone takes issue with something on this list, this is definitely the one I'd be willing to concede shouldn't change, or that it could potentially just be Water type.

#124. Jynx
Current Type = Ice/Psychic
New Type = Dark/Psychic

WTF is Jynx? Why is it an Ice type? It immediately makes me think of a voodoo priestess more than anything related to ice, so Dark/Psychic is a pairing that fits much more in my mind. I might be missing some lore element to the ice aspect. Ice/Fairy? Ice/Ghost? Something is off about this, for sure.

#127. Pinsir
Current Type = Bug
New Type = Bug/Dark or Bug/Fighting

Considering Heracross popped up in Generation 2, I would argue that a better dual-type for Pinsir would be Bug/Dark, but I can see the argument people have made for it to be Bug/Fighting. In my mind, though, Pinsir looks like the type of bug that would be found almost exclusively at night, and Bug/Dark would be a real force to be wreckoned with when it comes to Psychic types. Pinsir is one evil looking bastard and if it doesn't make you think Dark, I don't know what to tell you.

#130. Gyarados
Current Type = Water/Flying
New Type = Water/Dragon

This list wouldn't be complete without the main example of this, wouldn't it? Gyarados is perhaps the most well known case of mistyping. It's a stretch to imagine why it is part Flying type instead of Dragon, as it's literally based off a sea serpent and the typical Chinese dragons! I also don't understand why it wasn't red to begin with, since Magikarp is red and Chinese dragons usually associate that color with this type of mythical creature. I also don't understand why its Mega Evolution is Dark instead of Dragon. And how can it learn Thunderbolt and other Electric moves if it's 4x weak to that type? Gyarados is one of the coolest looking and its typing just murders it from being more useful.

Those are my choices, but do you think I left anything off the list?
What are some other type changes you wish would be made?
Should there be more lists for the other generations?

Wed, Bed or Dead: Women from Suicide Squad Edition

Posted by Anthony Mango - Tuesday, August 9, 2016

Welcome to another edition of Wed, Bed, or Dead—the Fanboys Anonymous equivalent to games such as Marry/Fuck/Kill, or "Kill, Bang, Marry" or any of those other alternative names with the same "would you rather" ranking concept.

If you're unfamiliar with these games, here are the rules: three men or women will be pitted against each other and you are forced to place each of them into a specific category of your choosing. You cannot double up on any category, replace people, or anything else. You must pick one to "Wed" (marry), one to "Bed" (have sex with), and for "Dead" (kill)—in theory, of course.

Marry Fuck Kill Suicide Squad who would you bang kill marry

Wed, Bed, or Dead: Suicide Squad
Enchantress vs. Harley Quinn vs. Katana

There are 4 female leads in the film Suicide Squad, so to do this, we had to remove one of them. Amanda Waller didn't make the cut because she is the manipulator of the bunch, rather than being on the team (even though Enchantress is the primary villain of the film rather than a teammate, her human counterpart was still a member of Task Force X).

For those who are unaware with the characters, Enchantress is an ancient witch who possesses Dr. June Moon, played by actress/model Cara Delevingne. Harley Quinn is The Joker's psychotic girlfriend —a former shrink (Dr. Harleen Quinzel) gone mad, played by Margot Robbie. Lastly, Katana is Tatsu Yamashiro—a samurai who can trap the souls of the people she kills inside her sword, played by Karen Fukuhara.

My Votes
Wedding Proposal = Katana
Bedroom Invitation = Harley Quinn
Death Sentence = Enchantress

As attractive as Cara Delevingne is, she's possessed by a freaking witch. I'll admit that there was something eerily sexy about her when she was in Enchantress-mode, but she's still a creepazoid who really needs to take a shower, so you have to rule out the Wed option right off the start and narrow it down to Bed or Dead. Considering how the other two are somehow less villainous and won't convert you into a faceless goop of a creature, she has to be killed.

That same factor goes into why Katana gets the "marry" equivalent while Harley is just a one night stand. All three women are incredible when it comes to their appearances, although I'd give the edge to Margot Robbie as being the most attractive. She's a lunatic, though, while Katana isn't. Harley would likely be amazing in bed and then you'd have to skip town and hope she never tracks you down. Katana, on the other hand, while being more reserved, is still extremely good looking and on top of that, is still super loyal to her husband despite him being just a deceased soul residing in her weapon. That's dedication right there. Without a doubt, Katana makes the best wife of the three of them, Harley has her issues but is the most fun and overall the hottest, and Enchantress, albeit a beautiful girl, has far too much baggage weighing her down.

Those are my choices, but what would you pick for these three?
Who gets the wedding ring, who gets the wild night of passion and who gets the guillotine?
Tell us who you picked for what in the comments below as well as suggestions for the next edition!

6 Flicks Picks for August 2016 Movie Release Schedule

Posted by Anthony Mango - Monday, August 1, 2016

Without further ado, another new month means another new set of films, so what's coming soon to theaters in August 2016?

6 FLICKS PICKS

Which films make the cut?

6. Anthropoid / Hands of Stone — Neither of these seem particularly awesome, but I'm stretching for movies this month. It's a tie between both Anthropoid and Hands of Stone as I can't distinguish which historical drama about a topic I don't necessarily care about I would want to sit through. Both seem to be at least decent, and I like some of the actors in both, so it's almost a wash.

5. Ben-Hur — I should want to see this movie more than I do, considering how it's a remake of a classic. However, as much as I may lose some credibility, I've never seen the original. I have a feeling this could be a rather big flop, but it's at least something more up my alley than a lot of the other options available in August.

4. The Hollars — There's too much dark, depressing stuff on my list, and this trailer seemed kind of comforting. The cast is charming and while I didn't uproariously laugh at the jokes, it felt like this could be a good heartstrings film that is a breath of fresh air. Plus, I may have a crush on Anna Kendrick, and by "may," I mean "definitely."

3. War Dogs — I don't know why, but since the first trailer I saw of this, I've been interested. Fundamentally, it could be just another basic "somewhat humorous drama" that we've seen before, but I'm still intrigued.

2. Sausage Party — I'm not as enthusiastic about this as I wanted to be, as the more I see of it, the less I find the concept funny, but I still have chuckled here and there, so I'll be checking it out sometime down the line regardless.

1. Suicide Squad — You can't give me a Batman movie and not expect it to be the film I want to see the most in that particular month.
