The 88th Academy Awards just passed by, but the entertainment industry is already looking ahead to next year's ceremony. The pomp and circumstance is over, the winners are in the bag, and everyone has given their reaction to what happened, so it's effectively yesterday's news.
Turning our sights to next year, however, is the topic at hand. Which movies will end up making an impact? How will the Oscars be impacted by pop culture trends? Will there be more diversification or was that just a running gag this time around? Let's break out our crystal balls and attempt to see into the future.
#OscarsSoWhite
By far, the biggest story of this year's Academy Awards was the lack of diversity. Hopefully, if you're reading this, you're not on either of the two extreme sides that are militantly against it on principle alone OR you're not someone who is advocating diversification purely for the sake of it, even at the expense of judging purely on talent. If that's the case, then you're in that middle ground of logic and reason that it appears most of the industry has come to the conclusion of, that there should be a more concerned effort not to discriminate against anyone of any background when it comes to hiring them for particular jobs that don't have any specifications behind them that are prohibitive. For example, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone that would argue an Asian man should be cast as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there should be no discussion saying that only men can direct superhero films if there are any women qualified enough to take on the reigns.
That being said, don't be too surprised if there isn't a grand, sweeping change when it comes to diversity for the nominees of next year's Oscars. Many of the films that will be nominated are already being worked on now—some even completed—and they haven't had time to reflect any changes in the mentality of the production companies.
This year's Best Picture winner Spotlight was pretty much the textbook definition of "Oscar bait" and I honestly didn't care for it all that much, similar to a lot of the nominees from history's past. By far, I would recommend people to watch Creed over it, since that was a much more enjoyable film, but I don't think that film was snubbed in favor of Spotlight because of its lead actor being black. Instead, I think that was more of a byproduct of the type of films those two are.
Creed is the seventh film in a fictional sports franchise, while Spotlight is a drama based on a true story that deals with a political scandal about a social issue. The latter is always going to receive more attention than the former. That is why 12 Years a Slave and The Help were given awards in the past (despite the subject matter not being something "white-washed") and why Star Wars: The Force Awakens—the seventh film in a fictional sci-fi/fantasy franchise which broke virtually every possible box office record this year—wasn't nominated for Best Picture.
Just as Dope and Straight Out of Compton weren't nominated for 2016, don't be surprised to see similar films not on the list for 2017. On the same token, don't be shocked if Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange aren't even remotely close to in the running for Best Picture. That's not a judgment of racial undertones in voting, but being biased against certain genres and favoring things that are by-the-books "Oscar films" from public perception over the years. It will take a lot more time for things to change, rather than just a few months. Seeing Mad Max: Fury Road get so much attention is a good sign that there are indeed changes happening, and one change begets the next. It will be shocking if by 2018, there isn't a noticeable difference, but don't be outraged if 2017's films are very similar to 2016's.
To counteract this, it'll be interesting to see who hosts the show. This year, Chris Rock was in a prime position to address the subject. Imagine how awkward it would have been if James Franco and Anne Hathaway were the hosts. Do they talk about it and risk being viewed as "unqualified to speak about the matter" or do they ignore it and risk being accused of sweeping it under the rug?
It's doubtful that the topic will have as much of a presence in 2017 as it did this year, as time will inevitably take some of the stinging sensation away. However, it still will resonate in some fashion, and it will be hard not to acknowledge last year's main talking point when looking back on how things have changed so much over the past year (if that happens). That being said, it seems like a comedian would be the best choice to host next year, with several suggestions of who should be the host including Kevin Hart (mentioned several times this year during the show), Louis C.K. (who had one of the funniest bits of the night when addressing the Best Documentary Short award), late night host Jimmy Kimmel (who has been doing his Jimmy Kimmel Live: After the Oscars show for a while and could step it up to a whole new level), and even just bringing someone like Chris Rock or Whoopi Goldberg back.
Either way, when it comes to the atmosphere of next year's Academy Awards, I don't expect to see #OscarsSoWhite being anywhere near as much of a focal point at the forefront, despite how it will inevitably have effects behind the scenes.
Leonardo DiCaprio Memes
The other biggest story for this year's Academy Awards was whether or not Leonardo DiCaprio would finally win the Oscar for Best Actor after years of putting on great performances, but coming up short. Yes, indeed he did walk away with the prize for his work in The Revenant, and while that will be celebrated, it also means the end of the memes that have been going around.
That was part of the fun of this season's buzz—the anticipation and anxiety of the outcome for Leo. All of that is gone, and there likely won't be a single person to rally around next year that fits the bill. The upside to that is how it means other people can work their way into the limelight and not be overshadowed, but the downside is that the average moviegoer might not be invested in the ceremony. I've heard more people talking about this award than any others, including Best Picture, so without that aspect to garner some attention, 2017 could be another year that passes by where people post on Facebook that they didn't even realize the ceremony was on the previous night.
Movies to Watch Out For
It's far, far too early to speculate with any kind of certainty, but just by reading some of the descriptions of what's to come over the next few months, it's not hard to pick up on a few red flags that stand out from the pack.
The Jungle Book is my go-to prediction for Best Visual Effects, as that movie just looks gorgeous. It's an amazing achievement to have one kid be the only thing "real" in the entire film and for it to be so photo-realistic in its look. Of course, it will have some other contenders nipping at its heels to take the statue away from it, such as Warcraft (which has CGI that looks much worse to me) and Rogue One (which could nab Best Costume Design) but Jon Favreau's team looks like the early winner.
The Angry Birds Movie seems like an easy pick for Best Animated Feature. I know, that's crazy, isn't it? The mobile game is so basic that it seems like a film based off it would be terrible, yet the trailers look pretty decent. Zootopia is coming out so early that it could hurt its positioning, as many people will have forgotten about it by next year. It sure as hell isn't going to Ice Age: Collision Course, am I right? Then again, Sausage Party could take us all by surprise, or things could be just as they always are with Pixar getting the win with Finding Dory.
As far as Best Picture goes, I wouldn't be shocked to see Birth of a Nation in the mix, especially considering the climate of diversity. Supposedly, the film is fantastic, which could mean that Nate Parker may end up at least being nominated for Best Actor for his performance in the film.
Silence is another early contender that I know almost nothing about, but the list of people involved just screams a nomination. When you've got Martin Scorsese working with Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver, how can you bet against it being good? I would love to see someone like Garfield get recognition as I think he's a dangerously undervalued talent in the industry.
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk could receive Best Picture contention as well as a Best Director nod for Ang Lee. It's based off a novel by Ben Fountain about the war in Iraq, so it checks off a lot of qualifiers for the type of material the voters are looking for. This seems like something that will lose Best Picture, though, but possibly win Best Adapted Screenplay, if it doesn't go to The Girl on the Train, which some reviewers have said is "the next Gone Girl" (which received some attention in its own right a while back).
Weightless from Terrence Malick, starring Christian Bale and Natalie Portman seems like the #1 movie that I'll be hoping doesn't win, as my track record with Malick is horrible. This comes off as pretentious fluff in the trailer for me, similar to The Tree of Life, but just because I didn't like it didn't stop others from raining praise upon it.
It's always good to stumble across new movies that are being released that we didn't even know about, so it'll be interesting to see what else pops up out of the blue to make an impression. Could Passengers be as awesome as its potential? Is Money Monster by the numbers enough? What about La La Land? Who knows!?
We have until February 26, 2017 to figure this all out, when the 89th Academy Awards are decided.

BEST PICTURE
NOMINEES:The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room, Spotlight
PREDICTION:The Revenant
- Before I had seen it, Spotlight was the movie I was hearing the most buzz about, but that's died down considerably. After watching it, I definitely would rather not see this win. Room was great, so I'd be okay with that winning. I'm surprised Bridge of Spies is on there despite hearing not all that much. I'm also VERY surprised about Mad Max getting the nomination. The Revenant isn't good enough to win, but it wouldn't be the most ridiculous thing ever, either, and the buzz for it has picked up considerably. I'm rooting against The Big Short for sure. It's really a shame Ex Machina wasn't nominated.
RESULT:Spotlight
BEST ACTOR
NOMINEES: Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Matt Damon (The Martian), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl)
PREDICTION: Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant)
- Poor DiCaprio has a very good chance of being passed over this year for Michael Fassbender, but while I think Tom Hardy stole the show in The Revenant, there's just too much buzz going around about Leo to deny him the prediction.
RESULT: Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant)
BEST ACTRESS
NOMINEES: Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room), Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn)
PREDICTION: Brie Larson (Room)
- Lawrence gets a nomination because she's expected to, and the same could apply to Blanchett. Brie Larson, though, is so great in Room that she'll be taking this for sure.
RESULT: Brie Larson (Room)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
NOMINEES: Christian Bale (The Big Short), Tom Hardy (The Revenant), Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight), Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), Sylvester Stallone (Creed)
PREDICTION: Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies)
- My GOD is this one tough. I could see anybody winning this except Bale and Ruffalo. In comparison to the other three, they just don't compare. I would then rank Stallone at #3 because I think the nomination will suffice enough rather than giving him the award itself. Rylance is someone who comes out of left field for his actual performance rather than just brand name recognition, so he has an extremely good chance of stealing this, even though I think Hardy gave the better performance.
RESULT: Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
NOMINEES: Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Rooney Mara (Carol), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs)
PREDICTION: Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl)
- This is another tough one. I haven't seen The Danish Girl, so I can't judge Vikander's performance in that, but I think she was fantastic in Ex Machina and deserved to be nominated for that, if not win for that. I definitely would pick her over everyone else on this list except for how I also can't judge Rooney Mara for having not seen her performance yet. Jennifer Jason Leigh was good, but not better than Vikander. Winslet and McAdams...I'm just confused about what was so great with those two performances. They were fine, but did they really stand out as amazing?
RESULT: Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl)
BEST DIRECTOR
NOMINEES: Adam McKay (The Big Short), George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), Alejandro G. Iñárritu (The Revenant), Lenny Abrahamson (Room), Tom McCarthy (Spotlight)
PREDICTION: Alejandro G. Iñárritu (The Revenant)
- I would not be surprised if anybody won this other than Abrahamson, but I think there's a ranking here. Iñárritu has a slight edge over Miller and McKay in my predictions, with McCarthy coming in fourth.
RESULT: Alejandro G. Iñárritu (The Revenant)
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
NOMINEES:Bridge of Spies, Ex Machina, Inside Out, Spotlight, Straight Outta Compton
PREDICTION:Spotlight
- I don't think Spotlight was that impressive, but I'm not the one voting here. I could see it either winning both Best Picture and this, or winning this as a consolation prize for being passed over if The Revenant wins. I've still yet to see Straight Outta Compton but out of this list, I would probably give the award to Bridge of Spies.
RESULT:Spotlight
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
NOMINEES:The Big Short, Brooklyn, Carol, The Martian, Room
PREDICTION:The Big Short
- I'm imagining The Big Short coming up short for the Best Picture award and getting this to make up for it.
RESULT:The Big Short
BEST FILM EDITING
NOMINEES:The Big Short, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, Spotlight, Star Wars: The Force Awakens
PREDICTION:Mad Max: Fury Road
- Call me ignorant, but I saw nothing special about the editing in every film on this list for the most part.
RESULT:Mad Max: Fury Road
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
NOMINEES:Ex Machina, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Star Wars: The Force Awakens
PREDICTION:Star Wars: The Force Awakens
- There's a chance The Revenant steals this, but I think that will be more of a cinematography award while this goes to the galaxy far, far away.
RESULT:Ex Machina
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
NOMINEES:Carol, The Hateful Eight, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, Sicario
PREDICTION:The Revenant
- This movie is beautiful. I'm sure a lot of people are upset that Star Wars: The Force Awakens isn't nominated and there will be lots of people rooting for Mad Max: Fury Road, but I'm rooting for Emmanuel Lubezki here.
RESULT:The Revenant
BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
NOMINEES:Bridge of Spies, The Danish Girl, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant
PREDICTION:Mad Max: Fury Road
- The latter three options have the best chances, I feel, but the one that stands out the most is Mad Max. We've seen space films before (and recently with Gravity and Interstellar) so that could hurt The Martian's chances, and The Revenant is predominantly outside and seems to have less work involved in this aspect than Fury Road.
RESULT:Mad Max: Fury Road
BEST COSTUME DESIGN
NOMINEES:Carol, Cinderella, The Danish Girl, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant
PREDICTION:Mad Max: Fury Road
- This is tough. Does the academy give the more ambitious, world-building oddball choice the win, or does it just go with "lavish means great" with Cinderella? I'm hopeful that they'll go outside the box.
RESULT:Mad Max: Fury Road
BEST MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING
NOMINEES:Mad Max: Fury Road, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, The Revenant
PREDICTION:The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared
- You've got to pick the odd one out, right?
RESULT:Mad Max: Fury Road
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
NOMINEES:Bridge of Spies, Carol, The Hateful Eight, Sicario, Star Wars: The Force Awakens
PREDICTION:The Hateful Eight
- Lots of buzz around Ennio Morricone doing this and considering his age and his lack of Oscars from the past, I think the Academy Awards will be good to him this year. I didn't like it, though, so I'm okay with it not winning. As much as I like Star Wars, I actually hope it doesn't win for this, because I felt the score for The Force Awakens was the most lackluster of the seven films so far and I don't want them to be rewarded for something so unmemorable.
RESULT:The Hateful Eight
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
NOMINEES: "Earned It" (Fifty Shades of Grey), "Manta Ray" (Racing Extinction), "Simple Song #3" (Youth), "Til It Happens to You" (The Hunting Ground), "Writing's on the Wall" (Spectre)
PREDICTION: "Writing's on the Wall" (Spectre)
- I only know of "Writing's on the Wall", which I know performed very well on the charts, but it still didn't get as much attention as the previous Bond film's song, "Skyfall" by Adele. A nomination could be the best it's hoping for, but I have heard zilch about the others.
RESULT: "Writing's on the Wall" (Spectre)
BEST SOUND EDITING
NOMINEES:Mad Max: Fury Road, Sicario, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Martian, The Revenant
PREDICTION:Mad Max: Fury Road
- Call it a weird hunch.
RESULT:Mad Max: Fury Road
BEST SOUND MIXING
NOMINEES:Bridge of Spies, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Star Wars: The Force Awakens
PREDICTION:Mad Max: Fury Road
- Normally, the same movie wins both sound awards.
RESULT:Mad Max: Fury Road
BEST ANIMATED (FEATURE)
NOMINEES:Anomalisa, Boy and the World, Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep Movie, When Marnie Was There
PREDICTION:Inside Out
- Come on. Lots of people think this should be nominated for Best Picture in general. I disagree, but these awards aren't based on what I prefer. If anything else wins this category, it will be the biggest shock of the whole set of awards as far as I'm concerned.
RESULT:Inside Out
BEST ANIMATED (SHORT)
NOMINEES:Bear Story, Prologue, Sanjay's Super Team, We Can't Live Without Cosmos, World of Tomorrow
PREDICTION:n/a
- I know nothing about any of these films, per usual, so my prediction is meaningless.
RESULT:Bear Story
BEST DOCUMENTARY (FEATURE)
NOMINEES:Amy, Cartel Land, The Look of Silence, What Happened, Miss Simone?, Winter on Fire
PREDICTION:What Happened, Miss Simone?
- I know nothing about any of these films, per usual, so my prediction is meaningless. However, I've heard more about this than any other, so that receives as random of a prediction as you'll get from me.
RESULT:Amy
BEST DOCUMENTARY (SHORT)
NOMINEES:Body Team, Chau, Beyond the Lines, Claude Lanzmann, A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, Last Day of Freedom
PREDICTION:n/a
- I know nothing about any of these films, per usual, so my prediction is meaningless.
RESULT:A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
NOMINEES:Embrace of the Serpent, Mustang, Son of Saul, Theeb, A War
PREDICTION:Son of Saul
- I know nothing about any of these films, per usual, so my prediction is meaningless.
RESULT:Son of Saul
BEST SHORT FILM
NOMINEES:Ave Maria, Day One, Everything Will Be Okay (Alles Wird Gut), Shok, Stutterer
PREDICTION:n/a
- I know nothing about any of these films, per usual, so my prediction is meaningless.
RESULT:Stutterer

Awards season is in full swing, but while the Golden Globes and Academy Awards celebrate the best of the year, the Golden Raspberry Awards poke fun at the worst movies to have come out over the past 12 months. The 36th annual ceremony will take place February 27, 2016.
WORST PICTURE
NOMINEES:Fantastic Four, Fifty Shades of Grey, Jupiter Ascending, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, Pixels
PREDICTION:Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2
- These are all seemingly worthy of this win. I've only watched two, and Fantastic Four is definitely the worst movie I've seen all year and I'd like to see it win, but it looks like the stronger contender is Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. Judging by the trailers, I can see why.
RESULT: (tie) Fantastic Four and Fifty Shades of Grey
WORST ACTOR
NOMINEES: Johnny Depp (Mortdecai), Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey), Kevin James (Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2), Adam Sandler (The Cobbler and Pixels), Channing Tatum (Jupiter Ascending)
PREDICTION: Adam Sandler (The Cobbler and Pixels)
- He's nominated twice. I have to imagine that gives him the edge.
RESULT: Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey)
WORST ACTRESS
NOMINEES: Katherine Heigl (Home Sweet Hell), Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Mila Kunis (Jupiter Ascending), Jennifer Lopez (The Boy Next Door), Gwyneth Paltrow (Mortdecai)
PREDICTION: Katherine Heigl (Home Sweet Hell)
- Random guess. She seems to be hated in a lot of circles.
RESULT: Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey)
WORST SUPPORTING ACTOR
NOMINEES: Chevy Chase (Hot Tub Time Machine 2 and Vacation), Josh Gad (Pixels and The Wedding Ringer), Kevin James (Pixels), Jason Lee (Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip), Eddie Redmayne (Jupiter Ascending)
PREDICTION: Kevin James (Pixels)
- There's a lot of hate here for Pixels and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 I think that will translate to Kevin James taking the award with this.
RESULT: Eddie Redmayne (Jupiter Ascending)
WORST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
NOMINEES: Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting (Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip and The Wedding Ringer), Rooney Mara (Pan), Michelle Monaghan (Pixels), Julianne Moore (Seventh Son), Amanda Seyfried (Love the Coopers and Pan)
PREDICTION: Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting (Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip and The Wedding Ringer)
- Random guess. It shouldn't be Michelle Monaghan, as she had nothing to work with. Not her fault.
RESULT: Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting (Alvin and the Chipmunks 4: Road Chip and The Wedding Ringer)
WORST DIRECTOR
NOMINEES: Andy Fickman (Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2), Tom Six (Human Centipede 3), Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Josh Trank (Fantastic Four), Andy and Lana Wachowski (Jupiter Ascending)
PREDICTION: Josh Trank (Fantastic Four)
- The Wachowskis could easily take this, but I think the publicity behind Trank's fiasco will earn this award for him.
RESULT: Josh Trank (Fantastic Four)
WORST SCREENPLAY
NOMINEES: Simon Kinberg, Jeremy Slater and Josh Trank, (Fantastic Four), Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey), Andy and Lana Wachowski (Jupiter Ascending), Kevin James and Nick Bakay (Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2), Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling (Pixels)
PREDICTION: Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey)
- The difference maker with this, I think, is that they can make fun of the source material by making fun of the script that came out of that book that came out of that fan fiction.
RESULT:Fifty Shades of Grey
WORST REMAKE OR SEQUEL
NOMINEES:Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Road Chip, Fantastic Four, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, Human Centipede 3, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2
PREDICTION:Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Road Chip
- It has to be this or Fantastic Four or Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
RESULT:Fantastic Four
WORST SCREEN COMBO
NOMINEES: Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell (Fantastic Four), Johnny Depp and his glued-on mustache (Mortdecai), Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Kevin James and either his Segway or glued-on mustache (Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2), Adam Sandler and any pair of shoes (The Cobbler)
PREDICTION: Adam Sandler and any pair of shoes (The Cobbler)
- Random guess. All of these sounds like amazing candidates.
RESULT: Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey)
RAZZIES REDEEMER AWARD
NOMINEES:Elizabeth Banks, M. Night Shyamalan, Will Smith, Sylvester Stallone
PREDICTION:Sylvester Stallone
- Rave reviews for his performance in Creed makes perfect sense to justify a redemption.
RESULT: Sylvester Stallone (Creed)
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS LIST? TELL US YOUR THOUGHTS IN THE COMMENTS BELOW!
With the 20th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise, it seemed like it was a guarantee that a new set of games would be announced at Pokémon Direct. Thankfully, for fans hoping this would be the case, they got their wish. For the holiday season of 2016, Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon will be released.
Already, fans of the franchise are wondering what new surprises are in store and what the game will entail. Most of that information is impossible for us to predict, but there's perhaps one thing that we actually can forecast: what types the legendary Pokémon mascots of these respective games will be.
Pokémon Moon Mascot
Right off the bat, we can tell that this one at the very least has to be Dark, no matter what, right?
The other type that coincides with it is a little more up for debate, and there are three potential options that make sense to me.
Rock, Water, and Ice all have some connection to the moon. The most obvious of the bunch is Rock, seeing as how, well, it's a giant barren rock. Ice would be the next easiest for children to understand, since it gets cold at night. Water would require a bit more of an explanation, but it boils down to how the moon is responsible for controlling the tides of the ocean.
Dark/Water or Dark/Ice or less likely Dark/Rock seem as though they're the best bets.
Pokémon Sun Mascot
Just as we know the Moon mascot needs to have Dark as its type, the Sun one obviously needs to have Fire, and if you need an explanation for that, I feel sorry for you.
Putting a secondary type on this Pokémon is a little more difficult to sort out, though. The only two ideas I can come up with are Fairy and Psychic, since those are most commonly associated with light.
Since this can't be wholly weak to the Moon mascot, what would determine the proper mix of those two is which of the three options they choose for Moon.
If Moon is Dark/Water, then this has to be Fairy/Fire (as the Water type will beat out the Fire, but the Fairy will beat out the Dark). If they go with Dark/Ice, then it can't use the Fairy type or it will have two advantages, so it would then need to be Psychic/Fire (Dark over Psychic, Fire over Ice). In the rare scenario where Dark/Rock was chosen for Moon, then Fairy/Fire matches up with Fairy beating out Dark and Rock beating out Fire.
Fire/Psychic or Fire/Fairy are locks at this point.
The Third Wheel
Although the Pokémon series doesn't always stick to the same conventions, there are normally patterns that repeat themselves. While the first generation used the starters for the mascots, the second began a tradition of using the legendaries as figureheads for the game versions.
Generation III, however, introduced the third wheel. Groudon (Ruby) and Kyogre (Sapphire) were the two primary mascots and a third legendary, Rayquaza, interjected itself and became the figurehead for the Emerald version. Generation IV had Dialga (Diamond), Palkia (Pearl) and the third wheel of Giratina (Platinum). Things went a little haywire with Generation V, though, as Reshiram (Black), Zekrom (White) were indeed balanced out with a third wheel with Kyurem, but instead of having a solitary Gray version, it was marketed as Black 2 and White 2. Similarly, X and Y had Xerneas and Yveltal respectively, but no version Z was made for Zygarde.
Even if there isn't a follow-up game (or games), it's not difficult to imagine that there will be some third wheel to balance out the mascots of Sun and Moon. What would be the most likely scenario for that? Earth.
Before you go crazy, I know that this doesn't necessarily take place on our actual planet of Earth, so I don't expect some Pokémon Earth to be showing up on shelves. However, there is probably going to be a Pokémon that represents the connection to the planet everyone is actually on.
As far as typing goes for this Pokémon, it has to be some sort of combination of Grass and either Ground or Rock. It makes far more sense to me for it to be Ground/Grass based off the balancing act of the other types we talked about before. This also fits in well with the balancing of the other types, as neither of these types has a distinct weakness or advantage over Dark, Fairy or Psychic, but can work well with the other half to an extent.
If it were Fire/Fairy and Water/Dark, Ground beats Fire and is weak to Water, but Grass beats Water and is weak to Fire. That's a good trade off of 2 weaknesses and 2 strengths.
It's a tad trickier with the others, unfortunately. With Rock/Dark + Fire/Fairy, there's a 3-1 ratio for Ground/Grass (Ground beats both Rock and Fire and Grass is only weak to Fire, but strong against Rock). On the flip side, Ice/Dark + Fire/Psychic makes the Ground/Grass too weak in a 0-3 ratio (both Ground and Grass are weak to Ice, and Grass is also weak to Fire).
Final Predictions
All this being considered, I'm leaning towards the Moon mascot being Water/Dark, the Sun mascot being Fire/Fairy, and the Earth-equivalent mascot to be Ground/Grass. Basically, we've got Greninja vs a new type combo vs Torterra.
What do you think of this setup? Do you have any other combinations that would make sense? Do you think Clefairy gets a Mega Evolution since it's tied to Mt. Moon?

On February 27th, Pokémon will be celebrating its 20th anniversary since the original Japanese release of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green in 1996, which would eventually come to the United States on September 28, 1998. Yours truly was a tad late to the party, being confused as all hell what this whole Pokémon thing was about until a few months later. However, I would eventually get hooked on Pokémon Red and move on to Blue, Yellow, Gold and Silver (as well as some offshoots like Pokémon Stadium) before moving on to other things. It's tough to balance a world with an ever-increasing amount of characters, strategies, and so forth.
In fact, balance is a key component to the series as illustrated by the typing each Pokémon gets. There are certain strengths and weaknesses within the rock/paper/scissors patterns built into the game so if you're getting ready for Misty's water-based gym battle, you know you should be catching that Oddish if you chose Charmander or you'll be screwed. Despite the idea of always having a way to counter something at the risk of exposing yourself to that thing's strengths, there isn't absolute total equilibrium. In a lot of ways, the typing advantages make no sense whatsoever other than to help promote some form of stability, but even that has gotten crazily out of hand over the years.
Since Pokémon is on the mind and I've been taking trips down memory lane as of late, I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to try to rationalize the different strengths and weaknesses Game Freak has established for the Pokémon types. I doubt we'll be able to "explain 'em all" but we can definitely try!
* NOTE: For nearly every situation where a type does 1/2 damage or is 1/2 resistant, there's no reason other than to try to figure out the mathematics. For example, there's no direct correlation between Bug and Fighting or why Electric is less effective against Grass.
Bug Type Pokémon Advantages
Bug is super effective against Psychic
- Bugs are one of the biggest classifications of things people are most afraid of. Entomophobia, arachnophobia, acarophobia, etc.
Bug is super effective against Grass
- Bugs eat grass.
Bug is super effective against Dark
- ???
Dark Type Pokémon Advantages
Dark is super effective against Ghost
- This could possibly be explained as a reference to purgatory and the idea of oblivion in the spirit world. Alternately, if Dark is translated more to Evil like it is in Japan, then this could represent the corruption of a soul.
Dark is super effective against Psychic
- A fear of the dark (nyctophobia) is extremely common.
Dark is immune to Psychic
- This is probably mostly just to weaken the Psychic type more than anything else, but it could possibly be a reference to how dark thoughts are hard to get rid of, such as addiction or depression, although that sends a fatalist message that you can't overcome your mental health problems, so I doubt that was something in mind when this was decided.
Dragon Type Pokémon Advantages
Dragon is super effective against Dragon
- This seems rather odd, doesn't it? Dragon is resistant to a lot, but doesn't have many strengths and is weak to itself?
* In my mind, Dragon should be super effective against Normal and Fighting, as those tend to represent average people and dragons in mythology are always top tier "impossible to defeat" without the use of magic (Fairy) or a special sword (Steel).
Electric Type Pokémon Advantages
Electric is super effective against Flying
- Lightning resides in the sky, so it makes sense for anything that is higher up in the air to be more susceptible to the electricity that isn't grounded.
Electric is super effective against Water
- Water conducts electricity.
* Shouldn't Steel be also weak to Electric since metal conducts electricity?
Fairy Type Pokémon Advantages
Fairy is super effective against Dark
- Fairy is representative at times of the concept of light, and light overtakes darkness.
Fairy is super effective against Dragon
- In folklore, there's countless examples of magic being used to defeat dragons.
Fairy is super effective against Fighting
- This one doesn't make sense to me, as I would think if anything, it should be the reverse. Fairy types should be daintier and less resistant to something as physical as the Fighting type. Think about how bullies pick on weaker people.
Fairy is immune to Dragon
- This is similar to what was said above, but just taking it to a more extreme level to help make Fairy stronger.
Fighting Type Pokémon Advantages
Fighting is super effective against Dark
- Perhaps this is a reference to how fighting a clean fight is better than fighting dirty?
Fighting is super effective against Ice
- Ice can crack with enough force and since Fighting type is very symbolic of physical strength, just picture how easy it is to break off an icicle with your hands if you're having trouble imagining this type advantage.
Fighting is super effective against Normal
- Do you even lift, bro?
Fighting is super effective against Rock
- Martial artists break cinder blocks with their fists.
Fighting is super effective against Steel
- Man over machine?
Fire Type Pokémon Advantages
Fire is super effective against Bug
- Too many people are quick to justify that this makes sense merely because fire burns bugs, but they forget to remember that fire can also set birds (Flying) and its used to cook fish (Water) and so on. My guess is this was a product of poor planning in Generation I where there were lots of Bug types that would have only been weak to Flying and Rock if not for Fire. Plus, there was a lot of crossover between Bug and Grass in the mindset of a lot of people, so it gets lost in translation. Really, this should be retconned out.
Fire is super effective against Grass
- If you don't understand how something like a forest fire works, I can't help you.
Fire is super effective against Ice
- Heat melts ice. Duh.
Fire is super effective against Steel
- Heat is used to forge metals. Think of a blacksmith.
* If it wasn't so necessary for Fire to be incredibly weak to Water, it would make sense for the 1/2 damage to be lifted, since heat boils water.
Flying Type Pokémon Advantages
Flying is super effective against Bug
- Birds eat bugs.
Flying is super effective against Fighting
- It's almost always advantageous to have the high ground in a fight
Flying is super effective against Grass
- ???
Flying is immune from Ground
- How are you going to hit something in the air if you're on the ground? Also, shouldn't this be super effective against Ground instead of just immune?
* It's interesting to think of the relationship between Fire and Flying that doesn't exist. Flying is representative of wind, which can be used to extinguish fires. However, anyone who has started a campfire knows how it needs oxygen to grow, so Flying type would be essentially fanning the flames. In a weird way, Flying should be both super effective against Fire as well as something that helps it get stronger, like how Sunny Day boosts the Solar Beam attack but also the strength of Fire moves.
Grass Type Pokémon Advantages
Grass is super effective against Ground
- Plants grow in the ground.
Grass is super effective against Rock
- This is the same as Ground basically. Also, look at how grass can eventually split a rock if it grows inside a crack. This is kind of a stretch, though, and if I were balancing things out, I would have kept this separate from the Ground advantage.
Grass is super effective against Water
- Plants take in water for resources.
Ghost Type Pokémon Advantages
Ghost is super effective against Ghost
- ???
Ghost is super effective against Psychic
- While I can justify this by saying it represents being possessed, shouldn't the idea of exorcism reverse the damage, making Psychic super effective against Ghost in return?
Ghost is immune to Normal
- Our plane of existence can't interact with the ethereal realities
Ghost is immune to Fighting
- This is the same philosophy as the immunity to Normal; ever tried to punch an intangible ghost?
Ground Type Pokémon Advantages
Ground is super effective against Electric
- Grounding out electricity.
Ground is super effective against Fire
- ???
Ground is super effective against Poison
- The only thing I could think of is how landfills are used to store garbage.
Ground is super effective against Rock
- Earthquakes.
Ground is super effective against Steel
- Nature over man-made structures, possibly?
Ground is immune to Electric
- Again, grounding out electricity.
Ice Type Pokémon Advantages
Ice is super effective against Dragon
- Since dragons are often lizards, which are cold-blooded, and Dragon needed some weaknesses in Generation I, I guess this was chosen as a means to counteract how Dragons can use many Fire attacks.
Ice is super effective against Flying
- Is this a reference to how birds migrate to escape the cold weather?
Ice is super effective against Grass
- Look at how trees bloom in the spring, but during the colder months, lose their leaves
Ice is super effective against Ground
- Frost over the ground?
* Shouldn't Ice type also be effective against Water because it's able to freeze it?
Normal Type Pokémon Advantages
Normal is super effective against nothing
- Well that's lame
Normal is immune to Ghost
- This is a two-way street between the normal world and paranormal not interacting with each other.
Poison Type Pokémon Advantages
Poison is super effective against Grass
- Herbicide and weed killer.
Poison is super effective against Fairy
- ???
* Poison should really be super effective against Water and Flying for polluting the oceans and the air. It should also be super effective against Bug (instead of Fire) because of bug spray.
Psychic Type Pokémon Advantages
Psychic is super effective against Fighting
- Mind over matter / brain over brawn.
Psychic is super effective against Poison
- Holistic medicine.
Rock Type Pokémon Advantages
Rock is super effective against Bug
- Simply put, rocks smash bugs.
Rock is super effective against Fire
- ???
Rock is super effective against Flying
- Killing two birds with one stone.
Rock is super effective against Ice
- Rock tools are used to chip away at ice.
Steel Type Pokémon Advantages
Steel is super effective against Fairy
- Just as Fairy beats Dragon in folklore, if the magician is evil by any means, then the hero is equipped with a sword to take them down.
Steel is super effective against Ice
- Just as rock tools chip away at ice, metal ones are even better at doing the same.
Steel is super effective against Rock
- Keeping with the theme of tools, rock beats ice, but since metal is stronger, that's what's used to break up stone. Think about drills and construction equipment.
Steel is immune to Poison
- The only justification I can see for this is that a lot of Steel Pokémon are somewhat inorganic. However, if Poison is essentially a variation of acidic things as well, shouldn't it be corrosive to metals as well, making it super effective against Steel?
* There's a glaring omission here in that Steel should be super effective against Dragon, since the heroes of the old tales where dragons exist almost always slay them with swords.
* Wouldn't it make sense, at least to an extent, for Steel to be super effective against Grass due to lawnmowers and such?
Water Type Pokémon Advantages
Water is super effective against Fire
- Water puts out fire. Duh.
Water is super effective against Ground
- Water erodes the earth.
Water is super effective against Rock
- Water erodes the earth.
Keeping all of this information in mind, this is a lineup I think makes a lot more sense:
* Note: In the years that have passed since writing this, I've changed my mind to feel that a few more things should be altered compared to the graphic above.
* Ground OR Rock should be able to take down Fire. Not both.
* Flying and Fire should have some sort of counter action. Heat rises and wind helps fire spread. However, a powerful enough gust of wind takes out fire, like blowing out candles.
* Bug shouldn't be weak to Flying, cause Flying isn't the Bird type. Just cause something is Flying doesn't mean it has a beak and eats bugs. Instead, it could be a cloud, and that has nothing to do with bugs. Theoretically, maybe Fighting should be effective against Bug, since you "squash like a bug." That does make Fighting pretty damn powerful, though, so...
* Normal is no longer weak to Fighting.
* I'm second-guessing making Ghost super-effective to Fighting. It should probably just be immune to those moves, rather than Ghost things actually hurting Fighting.
* Maybe Fairy shouldn't be weak to Fighting. If that's the case, Fairy could use another weakness. My gut says Psychic. Maybe it doesn't need another weakness, though. I'm open to discussion.
* For fun, I figured if there were any other types that could be added, it would be Sound and/or Rubber/Plastic. Theoretically, Sound would be effective against Ice and Rock? Weak to Flying (sound doesn't travel in space), Water and Ground as they muffle sound? What about Electric? Rubber would be immune to Electric, weak to Fire, Steel and Ice, resistant to Water and Fighting, maybe effective against Ground since it bounces. Plastic would probably be the same, but not immune to Electric or have any interaction with Ground.
That's the best that I can do after all these years, but if you have any suggestions for those without answers, tell us! Leave a comment below with your thoughts, your theories, and your preferences!
