"Some of my cosplays do reveal my butt cheeks, but it's not a form of saying, 'Hey my butt cheeks are out, touch me!'" said Caryn Rafi (Siryn Cosplay) as she described her experience cosplaying at conventions.

female cosplayer as Loki

The subject of fangirls in comics and video games is not a new topic of discussion, but it's one that demands the spotlight. As the geek world becomes more welcoming of fangirlswho make up 47 percent of comic book readers and 48 percent of gamersthe stigma surrounding females in this genre has not yet gone away, and sexual harassment is a major concern as a growing number of females cosplay at conventions.

According to Lance Fensterman, vice president of ReedPOP, New York Comic Con saw an increase in sexual harassment in 2013, prompting the new zero-tolerance anti-harassment policy that was put in place this year. NYCC organizers also made it easier for victims to report sexual harassment directly to the convention's security through the official NYCC app.

It was a valiant effort to combat sexual harassment, but a stricter policy is just the beginning. Dressed in a blue Gameboy outfit on Thursday, Rafi detailed her latest incident: "It was a resting day before the next 3 days, and I saw an old friend so we stopped to take an innocent selfie. During that selfie, some guy walked by me and cupped my ass. I said out loud, 'I felt that, jerk! Nice try, no game!'" The rest of her weekend included cosplaying as Poison Ivy, Daphne from Scooby Doo, and Callie from Ugly Americans, attracting much media coverage.

The large Cosplay Is Not Consent signs that were displayed throughout the Queue Hall of the Javits Center was a bold reminder to NYCC's 151,000 attendees, however, sexual harassment in cosplay is far from an isolated incident; it stretches to conventions globally and throughout the Internet.

Just fewer than 3,000 women signed a petition created by Geeks for CONsent demanding San Diego Comic Con (SDCC)where women made up more than half the audienceadopt a formal no-tolerance policy, coining the slogan "Cosplay ≠ Consent." The sentiment didn't go as far as planned, as SDCC has not made any changes in their policy, but it certainly has stirred the pot.

According to ComicBookResources, David Glanzer, director of marketing and public relations for Comic-Con, WonderCon, and Alternative Press Expo, stated that the show already has an anti-harassment policy in place that is intentionally nonspecific to cosplayers, saying, "I think we're comfortable in the policy we have." Taking a firm stance against sexual harassment, Emerald City Comic Con posted flyers all over the convention center in March to specifically address harassment of cosplayers, reading, "Costumes Are Not Consent."

Not surprisingly, the cosplay community creates a sense of escapism and builds an outlet for fans to enjoy bringing their favorite characters to life with others. Yet in such a community that is so accepting, no one is immune to the Internet, which has become a battleground between praise and hate.

A considerable amount of attention is given to female cosplayers, commenting on overly revealing costumes or criticizing their body types, while others comment on blogs to argue over whether they are "true" geeks. Female characters in comics have always been unrealistically drawn to over-accentuate their figures to appeal to the male-dominated audience, which brings controversy to female cosplayers who dress in "sexy" costumes such as Slave Leia from Star Wars or who cross-play a male character and turn them ultra-feminine by wearing a corset and heels. Video games do not differ in their portrayal of women, either, but with the growing trend of superheroes in film and television, it's only recently that women characters have finally been getting less objectifying costumes. Still, no costume gives others the right to make the wearer uncomfortable, especially in a community that is built around a common interest.

cosplayer is called "racist" for using blackface makeup on her Walking Dead costumeRecently, a German cosplayer received major international heat for her screen-accurate portrayal of Michonne from The Walking Dead. Kira Markeljc, who goes by the name Purple Candy Cosplay on Facebook, posted a photo of her cosplay that featured brown body paint to achieve Michonne's skin color. After the photo went viral on Tumblr, it opened a deluge of comments calling her "racist" and lashing out at her for doing "blackface"the culturally degrading form of theatrical makeup that was once used by performers to represent a black person before they were allowed in theater. [FYI: racism is defined as the belief of another race being inferior to your own, NOT cosplaying.]

While Michonne wasn't the only character from the Walking Dead she cosplayedshe also did Beth—the major debate in this was the fact that she is white and portrayed a black character. The post has since been removed, but the issue brought up in the comments still remains: Are we really only allowed to cosplay within our race/gender? [That's a whole other topic, and I fully disagree, but let me know what your opinion is in the comments.]

Hostility toward fangirls has deterred many cosplayers from doing certain characters and forced many women out of the gaming and gaming journalism industries, according to TIME. Some have even received death threats; game critic Anita Sarkeesian was forced to cancel a speech on women in video games at Utah State University after someone sent an email threatening the "deadliest school shooting in American History."

"A lot of women in our industry exist in a constant state of fear," wrote indie game designer Elizabeth Sampat in her blog on her thoughts of women in the industry. "Women who make games and would never dream of connecting their face or real name with a Twitter account, just in case. Women who would never go indie. Women who are terrified of starting a crowd funding campaign but who can't get their dreams funded any other way, and so their dreams just die. Are you okay with this? Is this the industry that you want?"

Will Wheaton spoke out against harassment in both cosplay at conventions, urging people via Twitter to "Be polite. Be respectful. Don't be a d***," and of women in gaming. "I have never, in my life, been ashamed to call myself a gamer. Until now," he wrote on Tumblr. "These misogynist little s***bags are a disgrace to our community. All of us who care about gaming need to step up and save our community, while there is still something about it that's worth saving."

To embrace females in geek culture, NYCC featured a plethora of panels that included "Women of Marvel" and "The Mary Sue Presents—Strong Female Characters: The Women Shining in Geek Media." Other female-focused panels addressed issues such as harassment and bullying in "End Bullying! Responding to Cruelty in Our Culture," "So They Say You Shouldn't Cosplay," and "#YesAllGeeks: Let's Talk About Harassment in Fandom."

The shift of these panels exploring "an explosion of enthusiasm and visibility for women in comics," as described in Vulture's panel on the future of female fandom, talked in depth about the diversity and equality of women in comics and creating characters that women and women of color can relate to. During the panel, which included Kelly Sue DeConnick (writer of Captain Marvel), Gail Simone (writer of Red Sonja), and Sana Amanat (editor of Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel), Simone said, "If you stand up for one minority and not believe in one minority and not believe in diversity and equality for all, that doesn't even make sense to me." Further coverage of the panel can be found here.

Even with Thor's hammer now wielded by a woman and the variant cover art of Spider-Woman #1 comic that caused an uproar, women still only make up 29.3 percent of DC characters and 24.7 percent of Marvel characters, according to calculations by FiveThirtyEight. As fangirls become a visible untapped market, however, industry execs are beginning to realize they can majorly profit by reexamining the diversity of characters, which will hopefully land Wonder Woman in her own film.

We need to acknowledge the number of fangirls that exist and make this a safe environment for everyone, so that all current and future female comics writers, game developers, cosplayers, and fans can join in on the conversation. Positive change in the industry is coming slowly, and now that more females feel comfortable enough to report sexual harassment at conventions, it's a large step in the right direction. The gaming industry needs to take its cue.

NYCC's new anti-harassment policy

Are you a fangirl and have a story to tell of your experiences in the male-dominated fandom?
Let us know in the comments below.

Sex sells and boy does it sell well. Last year, I made a post about the top 10 most attractive female characters that I had a fictional crush on and it eventually became the highest viewed post in this entire website's history. Well, it's a brand new season of television, so it's time to do this for the sequel.

To preface things similar to last time, this is more about the characters themselves rather than the actresses playing them. Naturally, we know very little about their personalities, but on these shows, we get to see the most intimate details of each character. Of course, a good portion of this is built around their appearance, so the actress herself does come into play, but hey, that's unavoidable.

Nevertheless, while I'm not the type of person that watches a show or a movie specifically because I find someone attractive on it, if I were to be living in the universes in which these shows exist, who would I find myself smitten with?

In no particular order, here is the list of the top ten ladies that have caught my attention this season (so far):

1) Paige Dineen (Katharine McPhee) from Scorpion

Katharine McPhee has a very baseline beautiful face, so that's not a bad foundation to start off with by any means. Ignoring the purely physical aspect of the actress that plays Paige Dineen, the character itself has many positive traits that catch my eye. For one, she's the "everyday normal chick" version of the "girl next door" trope. Essentially, that translates to being a relatable average woman without falling into the trap of becoming too flawless. A lot of "girl next door" writers are afraid to make the character imperfect, fearing that if the character steps too far beyond the safe boundaries, it will go against the intention for normal people to identify with her.

Paige is the least intelligent person on the team, but that prevents her from having the arrogance that comes with everyone else's skills. Jadyn Wong's character Happy Quinn might appeal more to others, but to me, she's too abrasive and has too much to prove. Paige admits her faults and tries to keep a level head about things, which I'm fond of.

2) Skye (Chloe Bennet) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) from Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Last time around, I only included Skye, because I felt like Simmons was a bit annoying kind of a know-it-all. For season 2, however, I can't quite decide which one I have a bigger crush on, so I have to make this a tie.

Both of them are incredibly attractive physically—let's just get that obvious aspect out of the way.

Much of Skye's allure is Chloe Bennet herself. Every interview I've seen her do, she radiates an attitude of confidence and fun that's extremely attractive. Similarly, the Skye character has that tone to her where I feel like I would enjoy myself on a date with her and not just be hoping to skip to the sheets. I could hang around with Skye as a friend, but I know I'd end up falling hard eventually, so that would be dangerous. Those eyes are killers, too. Even when Skye's character is having her darker moments, she can flip it all around with a quick, devious smile that is super enticing. She's interesting without being packed to the gills with problems.

Simmons has won me over quite a bit in comparison to the beginning of the first season. Originally, I found her to be way too over-the-top and bothersome. Now that she's developed a personality, I'm crushing on the nerd. I do have a thing for dorks that I can't deny. After all, why would I have created a website about geek culture if I didn't, right? Simmons is very intelligent, which is a big positive, and she's very humble and fragile. Seeing a pretty girl who needs rescuing speaks to some kind of an animalistic side in men and it definitely strikes a chord with me when it comes to Simmons. Also, seeing her have a bit more of an edge to her this season gives off that vibe that maybe she's an angel in public, but behind closed doors, she becomes a bit wicked.

Also, just because I gave the spotlight to these two women doesn't mean I don't have my eye on Melinda May, either, but her character is far too much of a bitch for me to get into on a personal level and develop a crush on. That being said...how you doin', Ming-Na Wen?

3) Detective Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) from Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Move over, Jake Peralta. Amy is mine. Despite how I didn't like when Jemma Simmons was a know-it-all, I like that attitude coming from Santiago. The main difference is when Simmons did it, she was justified and I felt like I was supposed to be impressed. With Santiago, her arrogance is very quickly destroyed and she's brought back down to everyone else's level in some fashion. Her embarrassment over silly issues like her brown nose methods balances it out and makes her adorable instead of irksome.

4) Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) from Gotham

When it comes to the women of the Batman saga, there is no shortage of beauties. Selina Kyle is probably the overall favorite, but in this series, she's still a teenager, so hopefully nobody is too creepy about that. The same age range should apply to most others like Talia al Ghul, Julie Madison, Sasha Bordeaux and Silver St. Cloud. Nonetheless, we have four main women on the show in Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), Sarah Essen (Zabryna Guevara) and Renee Montoya (Victoria Cartagena) along with the featured woman for this article. Fish Mooney's villainous ways rule her out. Sarah Essen isn't my type, either. Renee Montoya would be, but fans of the series know that I wouldn't be her type.

Barbara has this "reformed cheerleader" thing going on, where she is clearly beautiful and has been beautiful her whole life, but she's moved on since then and she's proving her value beyond her looks. She's supportive of Gordon (always a positive), she's not a complete pushover, and I'm fascinated with those eyes. When she's in a bright mood, they pop in a way that seems super fun. When she's more forceful, I feel a bit intimidated. I'm not sure why I like that, but for some reason, I do. Erin Richards better be on this show for a long time to help offset the unattractiveness of Harvey Bullock, Penguin, and pretty much every other character in the cast.

5) Abigail (Mackenzie Mauzy) from Forever

WOW is this woman stunning when she smiles. In the first episode, I was more into Detective Jo Martinez (Alana De La Garza) and granted, she's still someone to mention as she's not written as a bimbo nor trying too hard not to be in an exhaustive manner (plus, she's just flat out attractive), but Abigail's written into the show as a woman whom the titular character loved more than anyone in his 200+ years on Earth. One can see why. She's essentially been flawless so far as not only a drop dead knockout beauty, but also an extremely compassionate woman who brings out the best in seemingly everyone and everything around her. How do you ignore something like that? You don't. I'd fall head over heels for this woman, I'm sure. Look at that smile!!!

6) Penny (Kaley Cuoco) from The Big Bang Theory

I normally hate short hair, but Kaley Cuoco has figured out a way to pull it off enough for me to be okay with that and not take her off this list, giving her one of the recurring spots from last year. I still prefer seasons 1 and 2 Penny to any other seasons, but Cuoco brings a magnetic charm to Penny's character that I can't ignore. Normally, Penny would be the type of person that I wouldn't want to be around, as I find it hard to tolerate people that can be SO stupid and rely on their looks (particularly if they're total drunks like Penny). However, I find myself liking the character and not being frustrated with her. Bernadette is more my speed, but in a room full of people, Penny would stand out first above all others, I'm sure, and it's predominantly based just on pure sex appeal.

Side note: a moment of silence, please, for all of the photos previously deleted off Kaley Cuoco's iCloud before The Fappening happened. You will be sorely missed.

7) Maggie Langston (Devin Kelley) from Resurrection

Although some names on this list point to the contrary, I prefer my girls to be more on the humble, cute, smart and nice side rather than the sexy bombshell. Maggie Langston represents the first group of personality traits very well, so if her character continues on the same path like it was in the first season, I'm sure I'll spend the next batch of episodes fawning over her once more. The only reason she wasn't picked for last season's list, by the way, was that Resurrection made its debut after I had written the article, so I had no idea what type of character she would be.

8) Zelda Vasco (Cristin Miloti) from A to Z

It's been established multiple times in my life that I'm totally Ted Mosby from How I Met Your Mother, so if you give me Cristin Miloti in pretty much anything from now on, I'm going to like her based off her Tracy character from that show.

A to Z is essentially a poor ripoff of HIMYM and she's playing the same character, but with lesser quality writing. What isn't there to like, then?

It's a shame the show is too quirky for me to probably be able to handle watching the rest of the season (or series, if it gets picked up for another season).

cute Cristin Miloti sexy Zelda Vasco hot A to Z

9) Brittany Dobler (Rebecca Rittenhouse) from Red Band Society

Admittedly, I probably would get too annoyed with her cutesy-ness after a while, but if I bumped into this girl at the hospital, I would undoubtedly have an infatuation with her. She's peppy and her heart is in the right place. Plus, she's easy on the eyes. Jordi's mom is super hot and I would have a huge crush on Emma Chota (Ciara Bravo) if I were younger, but all things considered, if I had my pick of the primary characters, Brittany would be the one I'd go for.

sexy Rebecca Rittenhouse hot

10) Iris West (Candice Patton) from The Flash

After only two episodes where she hasn't been too much of a focal point, it's tough to pinpoint specifics for why I like Iris West, but I do. Obviously, Candice Patton herself is beautiful, so as with everyone above, that is the foundation for a lot of this. By the end of the season, it might turn out that that's the entirety and that her character doesn't have all that much more substance beyond it. However, I would venture a guess to say that if they keep her smiling and not being vindictive, she could end up growing on me in a lot of other ways. I'm not ignoring Danielle Panabaker, who is very attractive in her own right, but given a choice, I'd pick Iris.

There you have it! Ten of the women that are on my television screens that I can't help but have a thing for.

Week in Geek: October 15th, 2014

Posted by Jeff Penner

Want to know what happened the past few days in nerd culture? WEEK IN GEEK is your quick fix to catch up with the rest of the fanboys out there.

Nerdy current events in geek culture for this week

MOVIES

DC Announces Huge Slate of Movies.

My take: I can easily see this news getting fanboys and girls drooling. Within the next six years, we'll see DC and Marvel on the big screen, duking it out just like in the heydays of comic books. I won't be surprised when WB changes some of these plans, however. Committing to a Cyborg movie in 2020 will only happen if the character is well received in the Justice League franchise. The most confusing announcement is The Flash to me. Although we fans can wrap our heads around different continuities, the layperson may have trouble distinguishing the film version from the TV one. As we say, "there can be only one."

Lego Movies!

My take: In WB's big announcement, they included The Lego Movie 2, Ninjago and The Lego Batman Movie. I'm most excited for the latter, of course, which will hopefully not just be a pack of video game shorts strung together. With Will Arnett returning to voice and Chris McKay directing, this could be a huge comedy hit. Not something often associated with Batman!

Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America 3 for Civil War.

My take: Another confusing announcement. I'm curious which way they play this as they'll be fleshing out their Netflix characters at the same time as this story comes into play. Considering how Captain America: The Winter Soldier had immediate effect on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., this could get dizzying.

Sony Cancels Spider-Man 3 and May Share Rights?

My take: Everyone has been dreaming of Sony sucking it up and allowing Marvel to use Spider-Man and now it might happen. However, they're planning on rebooting AGAIN first? And replacing Andrew Garfield? Sony can't decide if it wants to make up for lost time or fix the mistakes it can't stop making.

TELEVISION

HBO Offers No-Cable Streaming Service At Last.

My take: Now you can have your cake…and you're done! Finally, in 2015, you will be able to have a stand-alone HBO service, not tied to any cable package. Considering how expensive cable packages are these days, I'm totally on board paying Netflix and HBO $8 a month each for quality programming.

The Flash Premiere.

My take: Finally I can talk about the show I watched illegally months ago!…er…I mean, I finally got to see this show I've been waiting so long for! This was a nice surprise, actually, I wasn't expecting this show to be so layered. The Easter Bunny would break is back carrying a bag of this show, it was so full of easter eggs. The story did a great job of raising questions that I want the answer to. The visual effects were also great, for TV. Even though Wally West will always be my Flash, I'm definitely going to be hooked on this series.

Arrow Season 3 Shocker.

My take: La la la la la, believe it or not, I'm only on season two. Don't tell me anything. All I know is, something big happened on the first episode of season three.

COMIC BOOKS

Marvel Double-Dipping.

My take: Not only is Marvel bringing back Civil War and Secret War as well as Years of Future Past in X-Men. They're also mashing up Age of Ultron with their Marvel Zombies line next year.

2015 Could Be the Year Of the Reboot.

My take: DC has been leading up to a huge event in spring of 2015 and now Marvel is doing the same thing. In both cases. they appear to be heading toward a franchise-wide reboot. In DC's case, they would likely be cleaning up The New 52 errors they've made in the hastily thrown together reboot from 2011. In Marvel's case, it appears to be a need to finally be rid of the Ultimate universe. More and more "616" characters have been meeting up with "ultimate" characters lately and signs point to the timelines merging.

Watch out for this segment each and every Wednesday. We'll see you next week!

Marvel Announces Civil War & Age of Ultron vs. Marvel Zombies - Summer 2015

Civil War 2015

The dust hasn't quite settled from NYCC, but Marvel keeps the announcements coming. On their website over the last two days, they are teasing two new events coming in Summer 2015: Civil War and Age of Ultron Vs. Marvel Zombies.

For Civil War, Marvel failed to drop more information, but did release an image of Captain America and Iron Man on each side of Iron Spider, pulling him in a tug-of-war.

The image is reminiscent of the 2006-07 event, with the same style used on books published in that crossover. This image of Iron Man and Captain America, however has a different style of uniform than the same characters announced for the Superior Iron Man or Captain America titles, spinning out of AXIS.

The Age of Ultron Vs. Marvel Zombies tease looks to capitalise on some of the hype building out of Marvel's next big cinematic release, with the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron hitting cinemas in May 2015.

Check out the releases here and let us know your thoughts about this latest announcement below.

Review: Uncanny X-Men #25 by Bendis and Bachalo

Posted by Sean Hamilton - Tuesday, October 14, 2014

Uncanny X-Men Last Will and Testament of Charles Xavier
Uncanny X-Men #25 Cover
bv Chris Bachalo
"The Last Will and Testament of Charles Xavier" leaves a lasting surprise for the X-Men.

Brian Michael Bendis plays a long game. As a writer, he loves to use a long setup and build the suspense of his narrative to maximize the effect. In Uncanny X-Men #25, Bendis unleashes his purpose for the long setup with his arc focusing on the will of the famous mutant leader Charles Xavier.

This has been a long time coming from Bendis who recently revealed on Marvel.com, that he had floated the idea at a writers retreat some time ago, following the Avengers vs X-Men event in 2012. He had to be patient to find the right time to encompass this into the ongoing X-Men stories, which finally came with the recent Original Sin event.

As a tie-in, due to the hidden nature of the idea and story and not explicitly linked to the Original Sin story itself, "The Last Will and Testament of Charles Xavier" has been intriguing for recent issues of both Uncanny X-Men and All-New X-Men. Bendis also does a nice job of continuing to build ideas and stories to pursue as a result of the content in this issue.

We pick up the story in Uncanny X-Men #25 as Cyclops, Emma, Magik, and Kitty have arrived at the Jean Grey School to listen to the reading of Xavier's will. As the holographic image of Xavier plays, we learn that he is married to none other than Mystique and has been surpressing an extremely powerful mutants abilities, for many years, going against all his teachings, for a greater good.

Xavier overwhelmed by Matthew Malloy
Xavier confronts a powerful new mutant -
Matthew Malloy
We see a lot of character interaction during this issue, notably between Cyclops and Iceman as the two original X-Men stand out in this regard. The actions Xavier describes and the drastic need he had to justify these grate against the sensibilities of the X-Men. This is not a surprise given the plot and narrative details, but we do not see the usual characters such as Beast, Storm, or Wolverine at the forefront of protest against Cyclops here. There are also some nice reunion moments as the separated X-Men are forced together again across the ideological divide.

As mentioned in the previous review of Uncanny X-Men #24, Bendis has introduced a new mutant: Matthew Malloy. He is revealed to be the same powerful mutant that Xavier had being working with to control his fantastic and unpredictable powers. These revelations disgust Cyclops, who has to be reigned in by the other stalwarts in his company. It is with this that Xavier extends one last mission to the X-Men: all of them must find Matthew and make sure he is controlled before something goes terribly wrong.

The emotional nature of Uncanny X-Men #25 is captured by the return of Chris Bachalo in the art. Bachalo captures a similar interesting dynamic as the other regular artist, Kris Anka, but brings a variation that is fitting here. Bachalo's use of facial expression shows a determined anguish in the characters that needs to be associated with the reading of a will. He also continues an appropriate tone by using the limited color palette that has long been seen on the covers of Uncanny X-Men. It fits the story with a gravity of style that is both refreshing and appropriate.

After the build-up from the story in the last few issues, it is nice to see where we are heading in Uncanny X-Men. Given the announcement from New York Comic Con over the previous weekend, it seems we are all heading to some big events with "Vortex" and "Secret Wars."

The stories being told continue to be captivating and it is certain we will be waiting a long time before the X-Men are pulled away from audiences as the Fantastic Four shall be in 2015.

As always, we would love to know what you think about the comic, so make sure you leave your thoughts, comments, and hopes for Uncanny X-Men below.

Sometimes there are works in writing that deserve praise for being so straightforward. Others deserve recognition for their subterfuge and double meanings. Bret Easton Ellis's 1991 novel American Psycho belongs to both of the aforementioned categories.

American Psycho Bret Easton Ellis Christian Bale New York City 80's decade Wall Street

I have to admit that the 2000 Christian Bale-starred movie adaption of the book was plastered into my psyche (probably due to the actor's milestone performance), but as nearly every instance has proven, the book is usually more detailed (and better) than the film.

I won't say the book is better, but it feels like a different, new world than that of the silver screen adaption. For starters, we have a more in-depth accommodation when it comes to Patrick Bateman's mind. It's a front row seat into the careless and completely unbalanced psyche that is the Wall Street yuppie's world, narrated by him in the first person (and, on at least one occasion, third person). All that matters is the competition of dress wear, which starts out to be a very boring obsession on Bateman's behalf, but highlights his oncoming lunacy. At least every two or three pages, he must point out the minute details of what he or someone else is wearing, from a description of Oliver Peoples glasses to the specific fabric of an Armani v-neck sweater, or the price of a piece of Tiffany & Co. jewelry.

It is a dreary, boring affair to follow the steps of a person who is completely alienated, yet fits in with the elite of late 1980's New York City—seemingly. His obsessions, such as dress codes, the latest high-tech home appliances and subjects on The Patty Winters Show (the latter appears to be the only way Bateman keeps track of days), are a burden, and though they provide stress relief for our narrator, all of them prove to be a cage from which he is desperate to escape. The only way to do so is to apply a completely reckless approach towards his surroundings; daydreaming of slicing throats open, not knowing anyone's name with absolute certainty, and harassing and bullying the homeless.

The book should make some sort of progress when reaching its middle, but no—it's the same keen analysis of Patek Phillipe watches and lame show-off dialogue when Bateman is among peers. Even though I was aware of the satirical nature of the book, it only truly becomes clear when you happen upon the discography chapters, such as the Whitney Houston and Huey Lewis and The News 'discography reviews.' The severity of Bateman's obsessions are clear with the constant over-analysis of every corner in his life, from the food to the specific champagne glasses he and others drink from.

Wall Street is about competition, and in American Psycho it's no different. Bateman is at a constant race to be the best, though he is usually hopelessly behind in many self-imposed races against his social group. One of these is Dorsia, a restaurant measured as the pinnacle of New York City's finest dining experience. I actually laughed while reading this book on the bus when I came to the chapter where he discovers his date is the fiancee of  Dorsia's head chef; the description of his anguish and need to hurt what he cannot control becomes quite amusing at that point.

In literary terms, American Psycho can be somewhat progressive, with broken trains-of-thought and unfinished paragraphs, which manage to make very good sense if you are a fast reader—the lack of breathing room adds significantly to the character's social claustrophobia. This is an aspect the movie failed to deliver properly, only showing one scene in the end where he loses control and cries on the phone with his secretary.

One cannot read about a delusional serial killer without running into graphic details. The pornography is quite explicit in a few chapters, and shows Bateman's complete detachment from other people, including the women he has threesomes with, and then (not always) kills. The murder scenes are like a horror buff's essays, describing body parts and actions to go with them in precise detail, and where he will stash the bodies and parts.

These torture-kill scenes are written in such a manner as to act as a gateway into Bateman's innermost frailties and reveal him to be a babbling child at times, with complete desperation taking hold, only to find himself pulled together in the following paragraph at a banquet or the latest well-reviewed restaurant in the Zagat guide (probably Nell's or a nightclub like Tunnel). It wouldn't make too much difference: often, Bateman—and all other characters of his ilk for that matter—forget restaurant names, confuse each other's names, and don't really recall what they did the previous day because all is disposable and replaceable in this world.

It was no surprise to me when I researched a bit into Bret Easton Ellis's motivations for writing this book, and found quite the obvious; for the constant race in materialism is an empty affair, which led the author to become entrapped in his own observations whilst pandering to materialistic needs. This period of his life brought nothing at all, only distance from what seemed to be real happiness. Ellis only admitted to having much more in common with his main character in an interview in 2010, a good twenty years after writing the novel.

American Psycho, after all its endless flurry of daydreaming murders (which are logically daydreams, though that is never made absolutely clear), obsessions with appearances and upscale restaurants, brings to light a very good point from the author's point of view: if we are to consider the highest strata of society as something all should strive for, then we are going about life in the wrong way. The highest rung of New York City life is deceitful, coke-addled and narcissistic beyond repair. Patrick Bateman was only one point of view; a man who measures life exclusively in money and possessions (and quality thereof), and mocks those below him. Troubling, however, is the fact that many of his peers and colleagues usually behave in the same way, such as forgetting people's names, acting interested in the shallowest possible way, and only communicating through achievements in purchase, wealth, and reservations at Dorsia. It is a world where all of this is what people strive to achieve, only to realize there is no finish line, only empty indulgence.

This book rates a 4 out of 5 to me, not making it to full score because of the non-stop descriptions of couture, wool vests, and suitcase leather color. Although pivotal to understanding the narrator's narrow view on life, it seemed a bit much to me; otherwise, it is a very well written caricature of what the author saw in this lifestyle.Manhattan is also portrayed as what it really was: a contrast of rich and poor.

What do you think? Did the book convey a more detailed message than that of the movie? Or was the film faithful to the feel and pace of the book? Comment, then have dinner at Olive Garden. No, wait—Red Lobster. No, Olive Garden.

Wytches #1 Cover Art

Wytches is undoubtedly one of those rare must-read-to-experience comic.

In all honesty, this review can not do this book justice, but can be read as an attempt to interpret some of my thoughts and feelings while reading this book.

Full disclosure, I thoroughly enjoy reading comics and being able to write about them adds another level of delight to the process. Given this, I tend to stick with tried and tested series and creators; when it comes down to it, this is a financial choice above all else. I need to satisfy the thirst, but my dollar can only go so far.

As with another recent purchase, I came to Wytches by chance more than determined choice.

A few weeks back, while checking out comic book apps I had downloaded I decided to explore the IMAGE app. As with the aforementioned monetary consideration, I checked the free to download comics and came across a preview for Wytches. It was written by Scott Snyder (Batman), who I was at least a little familiar with, drawn by Jock (Batman), whom I didn't know, and colored by Matt Hollingsworth, again not someone I was overly familiar with.

The premise seemed intriguing, however I'm not really a horror fan, but given that it was free, I decided to check it out. Since it was a preview, the story was brief, but left a mark. I wasn't set on getting it straight away, but the more I tried to forget about it, the more I had to read it. I needed to see what happened next (who says marketing books like this isn't effective?).

A couple of weeks later, I stopped in at my local comic book shop just to get my regular books. Once the week of its release arrived, I saw a few headlines and noted some tweets about Wytches, and recognized that this book was something special. I quickly contacted my local comic supplier but their copies hadn't been sent. I would have to wait two more weeks! Scratch that, I went to my back up, the only other comic store in the city, and managed to secure one of the last copies.

Once I read it, I couldn't put it down. I was hooked.

The story, as the title suggests, focuses on Wytches, but in a most thrilling way, by playing up the cannibalistic traits often glossed over in our modern understanding of witches. We don't get to see them outright in this issue, which is great, as it keeps building the suspense. We are introduced to the main players, a small family that has relocated to a town nestled by local woods, which provides the backdrop for the scary home of the Wytches.

Wytches plegde is a pledge
The Wytches need a pledge.

Snyder does well to link the suspense across pages and backstory. We get a proper set up about why the Rook family have moved and are teased with a deeper link to the Wytches. The story content is mature, but given the violent, dark tone of the narrative this is to be expected.

Wytches brings a new level of creativity to thriller/horror genre that has frequently touched mainstream, but remains the less known cousin of the super heroes genre. I certainly hope it helps to challenge the current status quo.

The art by Jock is fantastic, but enhanced by the colors of Hollingsworth. Jock attains a a great level of believability with his art in the story, which draws the audience in and helps them identify with the characters. While an over-the-top realistic style has not been used, the art lends itself in such a way that we can be familiar with what we see. This is contrasted with the splatter effect of Hollingsworth's colors, especially through the introduction and Jock's portrayal of the supernatural elements in the story. There is a nice use of light and shadow which adds to the tone of Wytches. The panel arrangements lead to a well crafted narrative the flows naturally. This is especially so as Snyder aims to link backstory elements into the main story, such as sailors' flashbacks and the faun's dramatic interaction.

Topping off the actual story is a letter from Scott Snyder explaining the set up of the story and providing some context on how it all came to into being.

After all of this what we are left with is a fantastic story that is as thrilling as it is beautiful. I can't wait till the next installment to see the Wytches really come out.

Until then, what did you think of Wytches? Did it freak you out, just a little? Leave a comment below.

All-New X-Men 31 Review Cover artWorlds collide.

What happens when a new mutant with undefined powers, which can rip a hole in multiple realities, meets the X-Men?

With this premise, Brian Michael Bendis unleashes his setup for the collision of the Ultimate universe and the original X-Men in issue 31 of All-New X-Men.

This issue picks up where the ripples of the "Last Will and Testament of Charles Xavier" storyline left off in issue 30.

Bendis has integrated his stories in All-New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men in this manner over the past few issues, and it's been nice to see this cohesion as the world of the X-Men is rattled by its key figures.

All-New X-Men travel to the Ultimate UniverseThis is a key issue for the setup of the Ultimate Universe and All-New X-Men crossover, and as a result it is not high on set action pieces. It is great to see the character development that is Bendis' style, as we see the relationship of Angel and Laura come back to the reality of the Charles Xavier school. The quick wit and dry humor emanating from the one-liners of young Iceman and Hank McCoy also enhance what could have been a slower issue. It is important to appreciate these moments amid the chaos of action that abounds in the X-Men's world.

As the story develops, the All-New X-Men leave the confines of their hidden school to check out a new powerful mutant beginning to manifest its powers.

Unfortunately for them, this new power set happens to send them all separately to a new dimension, each with their own problems to face. It is clever to see the unfolding story from Bendis, as it has some great potential not only to bring together iconic parts of the Marvel Universe, but also to test these characters in a way that hasn't been seen before.

Marvels All-New X-Men 31 interior art reviewAll-New X-Men #31 is also the beginning of a run for new artist Mahmud Asrar, one of Marvel's "Young Guns." Although this change was announced earlier this year, Asrar has taken no time to pause the flow of the art in this series, and his style bears great similarity to Grawbadger and Immonen. The inking is a little heavier in places, but not ostentatiously so. Holding it together are the beautiful colors of Marte Gracia, which as usual are seamlessly coherent.

Asrar has a different approach to the facial features and expressions of his characters, particularly the eyes. His style feels a little fresher and displays more emotion. There is a lot of panel work, but this seems to fit the story, with so much to be set up and taken in from the narrative.

Overall, the introduction of the new direction for the story, which focuses more on the All-New X-Men core group, and the change to Asrar for artwork are pulled off well. I look forward to the next issue of All-New X-Men to see how Asrar continues and what we will meet in the Ultimate's universe.

What did you think of this issue of All-New X-Men? How did you like Asrar's art?

X-Men 2015 Comic Events
2015 X-event Black Vortex announced.
Hey Fanboys and Fangirls! There has been a plethora of X-Men-related news out of NYCC this weekend.

To bring some cohesion to this, we thought it best to summarize this and help quash a few rumors along the way.

Marvel is not sitting back on its haunches or resting on its laurels when it comes to the X-Men. Lead X-Men writer at Marvel, Brian Michael Bendis, has been trying to quell rumors of their pending cancellation for months. Recent interviews and Tumblr posts have specifically targeted this topic. Well, it can't be more emphatically clear once you catch up with the NYCC news about the X-Universe.

Jonathan Hickman 2015 Secret Wars from Marvel
Preview art for Secret Wars by Alex Ross
The big events announced so far are the "Secret Wars" and "Black Vortex" crossovers. Both will have unique aspects that involve X-Men. "Secret Wars," as the name suggests, pays homage to the classic event from Marvel and is written by Jonathan Hickman. While the initial art does focus on various Avenger characters, X-Men will definitely be involved. During the Marvel NYCC "Cup O' Joe" panel, Dan Buckley stated, "Every story and every book is working towards 'Secret Wars.'"

"Black Vortex," headed by Bendis, is set to once again combine the Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men in a cosmic adventure. These two series crossed during the recent "Trial of Jean Grey" mini-event earlier this year, and they are set to see a lot more action starting in February 2015. As revealed at the "Cup O' Joe" panel, the main titles involved will be All-New X-Men, Nova, Captain Marvel, Cyclops, and Guardians of the Galaxy and will include travels to every part of the galaxy. When explaining the black vortex, the panel stated " The black vortex is an ancient artifact that unlocks the cosmic potential within everyone.… We'll see these characters wrestle with the decision whether or not to open the black vortex."

Death of Wolverine cover art
Death of Wolverine #4

The end of 2014 and 2015 will also see the fallout of the "Death of Wolverine." With this set to wrap up next week, Marvel will introduce some new perspectives, with multiple series focusing on how life continues in the absence of the iconic character. As announced at the Marvel "Death of Wolverine" panel, both new and existing titles will touch on the subject: solo series Deadpool, Storm, and Nightcrawler as well as Spider Man and the X-Men, The Logan Legacy, Wolverines, Weapon X, and Life after Logan.

As also revealed at the "Death of Wolverine" panel, Deadpool will have an larger ongoing focus through the Marvel universe, with Cullen Bunn set to reprise Night of the Living Deadpool and Gerry Duggan expanding the series further.

Given the detail of announcements and the set up so far for the continuation of comic stories involving the X-Men or characters related to them, it seems that we will not be in short supply for a long time. It is refreshing to see this, and I hope this will help ease some rumors and put to rest doubt about the continued importance of the X-Men to Marvel.

We have so much to look forward to, and we will continue to bring you news, previews, and reviews from X-Men comics. What news from NYCC about the X-Men have you liked? What has surprised you? Was there anything you still hoped would come out? Let us know and leave a comment below.

Robert Downey Jr. to Appear in Captain America 3 - Civil War?

Posted by Saliv - Monday, October 13, 2014

Greetings, Fanboys and Fangirls! This is Sam Lascio, still recovering from New York Comic-Con and bringing you some interesting news from the interwebs.

It's being reported by Variety that Marvel's golden goose, Robert Downey Jr., is to appear in the currently untitled Captain America 3! But that's not all, it's ALSO being reported that this film is going to set up a Civil War-esque storyline, possibly for the third Avengers movie. This comes to us after already knowing that Robert Downey Jr. first said there were no plans for Iron Man 4, then said there were talks about it on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Variety claims that, "according to sources with knowledge of the situation," RDJ was approached about a small role in Captain America 3, but the actor wanted Tony Stark to have a larger role in the film. Apparently this "angered" Marvel Entertainment chief Ike Perlmutter, and he wanted Downey written out of the script.

There have been whispers among the sweatiest of us nerds as to if and how Marvel could incorporate the much beloved Civil War storyline into its Cinematic Universe, which makes this news sound almost too good to be true. After the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the reemergence of HYDRA, and the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron, one could see how the government could want to put an end to the superhero business and force the dreaded Superhero Registration Act from the comics. Also, with new characters being introduced in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the new series Agent Carter coming to television, and the five new Netflix series kicking off next year with Daredevil, not to mention Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, potentially Black Panther, etc. coming in Phase 3, there's a lot of potential for this rumor to be true. However, it's important to note that neither Robert Downey Jr.'s reps at the CAA nor anyone at Marvel have commented on this news. Also, since no actual sources were reported and every other website (including ours) are reporting on this from Variety's "exclusive," this could very well be nothing but a rumor. Lastly, the article says that that RDJ is "on the verge of signing on to Captain America 3," not that he has for sure.

Would you be excited if Captain America 3 set up an Avengers: Civil War? Do you think Robert Downey Jr. will appear in the film? Is this all a bunch of crap, or does this feel like the direction the MCU is heading towards? Sound off in the comments section! Thanks for reading, everyone. My name is Sam Lascio, and I am a Fanboy!
