Robert Downey Jr. to Appear in Captain America 3 - Civil War?

Posted by Saliv Monday, October 13, 2014
Greetings, Fanboys and Fangirls! This is Sam Lascio, still recovering from New York Comic-Con and bringing you some interesting news from the interwebs.

It's being reported by Variety that Marvel's golden goose, Robert Downey Jr., is to appear in the currently untitled Captain America 3! But that's not all, it's ALSO being reported that this film is going to set up a Civil War-esque storyline, possibly for the third Avengers movie. This comes to us after already knowing that Robert Downey Jr. first said there were no plans for Iron Man 4, then said there were talks about it on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Variety claims that, "according to sources with knowledge of the situation," RDJ was approached about a small role in Captain America 3, but the actor wanted Tony Stark to have a larger role in the film. Apparently this "angered" Marvel Entertainment chief Ike Perlmutter, and he wanted Downey written out of the script.

There have been whispers among the sweatiest of us nerds as to if and how Marvel could incorporate the much beloved Civil War storyline into its Cinematic Universe, which makes this news sound almost too good to be true. After the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the reemergence of HYDRA, and the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron, one could see how the government could want to put an end to the superhero business and force the dreaded Superhero Registration Act from the comics. Also, with new characters being introduced in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the new series Agent Carter coming to television, and the five new Netflix series kicking off next year with Daredevil, not to mention Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, potentially Black Panther, etc. coming in Phase 3, there's a lot of potential for this rumor to be true. However, it's important to note that neither Robert Downey Jr.'s reps at the CAA nor anyone at Marvel have commented on this news. Also, since no actual sources were reported and every other website (including ours) are reporting on this from Variety's "exclusive," this could very well be nothing but a rumor. Lastly, the article says that that RDJ is "on the verge of signing on to Captain America 3," not that he has for sure.

Would you be excited if Captain America 3 set up an Avengers: Civil War? Do you think Robert Downey Jr. will appear in the film? Is this all a bunch of crap, or does this feel like the direction the MCU is heading towards? Sound off in the comments section! Thanks for reading, everyone. My name is Sam Lascio, and I am a Fanboy!
