Week in Geek: September 19-25, 2013

Posted by Anthony Mango - Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Want to know what happened the past few days in nerd culture? WEEK IN GEEK is your quick fix to catch up with the rest of the fanboys out there.

Nerdy current events in geek culture for this week

MOVIES

Colin Farrell and Paula Patton could star in the World of Warcraft film. Paul Dano, Travis Fimmel, Anson Mount and Anton Yelchin could also potentially be in it.

My take: The bigger the stars that join the film, chances are the better it will do.

"Male, 7 ft to 7.3 ft tall with a slim/thin build and upright posture. Not too worked out or too 'thick set' especially in the shoulders. Broad facial features would be a bonus." - does this casting call for Star Wars mean that Chewbacca is returning?

My take: It sure sounds like it! Then again, we're hearing such chaos with casting and character rumors at this point that you have to take everything with a grain of salt.

Glenn Howerton from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia auditioned for Peter Quill aka Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy.

My take: Sunny is one of my favorite shows, and although I'd love to see Howerton in a comic book movie at some point (possibly as a villain of some sort), I don't know enough about Peter Quill to really have an opinion one way or the other on that potential casting choice.

VIDEO GAMES

SteamOS - Steam is coming to a new operating system.

My take: Everyone at Fanboys is kind of confused but excited about this.

TELEVISION

Lots of new TV shows making their premieres and debuts this week. Put that TV on and tell us what you think of them in the comments!

My take: Always an exciting time for television. I hope we get a lot of good ones.

MISCELLANEOUS

Teenage Mutant Koopa Troopas. Need I say more?

My take: Very cool!

Jim Wuthrich has been promoted to President of the Americas at Warner Bros Home Entertainment. He will oversee physical and digital distribution for games and more.

My take: Congrats, Jim. The Fanboys wish you luck and hope you don't screw it up, as we'll be the first people you'll have to answer to!

Watch out for this segment each and every Wednesday. We'll see you next week!

An Interview with J Da Costa

Posted by Unknown

I recently had the chance to sit down with Asian pop sensation J Da Costa.

In this video, we talk about her time away from the industry and about her new album. J serenades us with her soulful voice and shows us why her star is still on the rise.

J is widely known in the Asian music circles from her time working with Jakal and the Hypnotise crew on the album Still Blazing and most notably the single "Pit Stop".

If you enjoy shows such as Supernatural, Dresden Files or even Kolchak: The Night Stalker, then you'd probably enjoy Sleepy Hollow. Sleepy Hollow starts out during a decisive battle between George Washington's army and the redcoats. During the battle, we see Ichabod Crane lop off the soon-to-be headless horseman's head. After this beheading, we are taken to present day where we meet the soon-to-be transferred cop, Abbie Mills.

Spoilers for Sleepy Hollow TV Show Season 1

How the headless horseman lost his head in Sleepy Hollow TV show
Break time during filming.

(MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD)
Abbie and her partner Sheriff Corbin head out on a call only to run into the headless horse man. The same one beheaded by Ichabod during the battle years ago. Corbin falls victim to the horseman, literally losing his head. This defining moment in the pilot propels Abbie on her journey to find the truth behind Corbin's murder. At the beginning of her quest, Abbie meets Ichabod, who has somehow been resurrected and is now wandering around town suffering from future shock.
(END OF SPOILERS)

The above scenario sets up the series as a whole. Ichabob and Abbie team up to deal with supernatural happenings around town while tracking down the headless horseman. Episode two sees them going after a witch, for example. Overall, I'm getting a monster of the week type of vibe with an underlying plot.

Sleepy Hollow, while a bit predictable, is fun and entertaining. There is even a surprise twist which gives the headless horseman a brand new origin. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for nods here and there to the original story, such as the captain of the police force who's last name is Irving. As an update to a timeless classic, Sleepy Hollow does a nice job of reinventing a ageless story.

Fox has agreed to a commit to a tv series starring Batman's cohorts in the Gotham City Police Department currently titled "Gotham". The lead character will be a young (presumably pre-Batman) James Gordon.

Gotham TV Series Logo Title Card Casting No Batman
"I'm the young rookie Gotham needs."

How the series will play out is a mystery for now, we know that the CW's "Arrow" has a slew of regular guest stars from the DC Universe comic book canon. If this is an earlier version of Jim Gordon, having several, or any, of Batman's rogues gallery may throw any kind of potential timeline recognition off kilter for many fans. How long this series can sustain without Batman remains to be seen. Back in 2002, a non-Batman tv series "Birds of Prey" even featured Batman in the opening credits...and still failed to perform in the ratings.

The comic books series "GCPD" was as non-Batman as it could be (though he appeared often) and the book was very well received until an (undeserved) cancellation.

At this point, all we can do is have our knee-jerk reaction to the announcement of the series ... what are your thoughts on following Jim Gordon as a young detective (possibly even *gasp*, pre-moustache)?

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 1 Review Pilot Hits and Misses

Posted by Anthony Mango - Tuesday, September 24, 2013

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. made its long awaited debut with the pilot episode tonight. Judging by the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the wide appeal that the program has, the experts have already deemed that it will be a huge hit. While that is almost written in stone, does it mean the show is good enough to warrant that?

It's time for another REVIEWPOINT as we break down the film's hits and misses. As always, we'll start with the bad news first.

WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW

THE MISSES

1. THE ABC NETWORK CHEESE FACTOR

Is it the cheesiest thing in the world? No. Is it campy? Not really...unless you count Lola the flying car, which I'm sure a lot of people will love because they'll embrace the absurdity of it, but that's just not my style. Still, I can't help but feel like this would be a show I'd enjoy a lot more if it were on a different network, namely NBC or CBS. There aren't many shows on ABC that I have liked in the past 10 years with FlashForward being the only one I can bring to mind - and if you watched that show, you would agree with me that it had a very different tone from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and most ABC programming. Everything feels a bit too clean. Also...and I know I'm going to catch heat for this...the tone is a little too "fun" and reminds me of Firefly, another Joss Whedon project, which I watched ALL the episodes for and did not like a single one of them whatsoever. I'm not opposed to fun, and I'm not one of those people that thinks absolutely everything has to be as dark and realistic as the Dark Knight trilogy, but I'd like for them to take it a bit lighter on the CGI, flying cars and jokey characters to an extent.

2. FITZSIMMONS, LEO FITZ AND JEMMA SIMMONS

For someone like me who absolutely loves puns, you'd think I would love that part of the duo at the very least, but I don't. This is partly due to the cheesiness that their characters exude. They're also rather bland and uninteresting so far and trying desperately to make up for it by exaggerating everything and trying to be these hectic comedic relief characters, but I'm just finding them annoying. I also am not looking forward to all the shipping from my fellow fanboys and fangirls around the world....particularly because they seem more like a brother/sister combo, and that's kind of creepy.

THE HITS

1. AGENT GRANT WARD

At first, before the show aired, one of my biggest gripes was that they didn't make the main character (or any of them outside of Maria Hill) people from the comics. While I do still maintain that notion and I wish Clay Quartermain and others will show up, and that they'll make use of the million or so S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that are in the comics rather than just continually making up brand new ones, I do have to bite my tongue a little bit with Agent Ward. Having a fresh, clean slate to start off with makes it so we can grow along with Ward without any preconceived notions. He's a bit wooden right now, but it's only the pilot, and they've put some groundwork in there to build up to some legitimate characterization down the line with his family issues and his hotheadedness. He's a much more likable lead than I anticipated he would be.

2. REFERENCES TO THE UNIVERSE

This show needed to prove that it was in the same continuity as the movies and it did very well illustrating that so far. Extremis, the Chitauri, gamma radiation, flat out mentioning Dr. Erskine and his super soldier serum, and so forth were all moments that made me smile as a fan. "I don't think Thor's technically a god", saying that there are cosplay girls parading around Stark Tower....awesome.

3. AGENT COULSON LIVES....SOMEHOW

At first, the mere write-off that Coulson only stopped breathing for a few seconds was bothering me. What a slap in the face to the movie, right? Then, with the allusion that there's more to the story than him just getting a vacation to Tahiti in his recovery, they sold me. I fully expect Coulson to turn out to be a Life Model Decoy and the revelation of this is sure to be a huge plot point that will develop over time. Putting that seed out there at the beginning of the show will pay off and every show that is worth a damn does this properly, just as they did here.

END NOTES

Melinda May still has to win me over and I don't like Fitz and Simmons, but the rest of the cast is good and I'm much less worried about this show's potential now that I've seen the first episode. They can certainly go down the wrong path and make this turn out worse than this, but there's just as much of a chance that they improve upon the flaws of the first episode. A slightly less cheesy tone, straying away from the things that remind me of Firefly, and keeping up the continuity will help it at least from my perspective. I'll be watching until they convince me to stop.

Would I recommend it? Yes. If you're a fan of the Marvel films, you'll get at least some entertainment out of this. Your mileage may vary on some of these concepts, though, either for the negative or the positive.

What were your thoughts on the episode? What should the next Reviewpoint be?

Ever wondered what it would look like if the previous actors who played certain characters were merged together with the current ones to form the ultimate, "perfect" versions of those characters?

Artist ThatNordicGuy is at it again, this time focusing on the cast of Star Trek, morphing the actors from the original series with the new reboot films. Take a look!

What do you think? In a perfect world, would this be what the characters would look like in your minds?

Riddle me this and riddle me that: what villains title should you check out at the drop of a question mark clad hat? DC's "Villain's Month" has been taking the world, and fans' residual income, by storm. With so many titles coming out so fast, it's easy to get lost in the madness. DC's marketing team may be the most fiendish villain of them all.

In case you missed the opening events of Forever Evil, all you really have to know is that an evil version of The Justice League made it's way into the DC Universe and has beaten the good Justice League so badly that they are nowhere to be found. Each of the titles with a villain cover then tracks the exploits of DC's most notorious villains as they run rampant with no heroes around. With so many colorful criminals on the stands it can be hard to make a choice, but I decided to start with my favorite green clad conniving always rhyming Batman villain, The Riddler.

Batman 23 Riddler Cover

They say a hero is only as good as his villains and The Caped Crusader has some of the best villains in fiction. This had me going into The Riddler #1 with quite a bit of enthusiasm. Sadly, the story ended up being a short character vignette without any real consequence or revelation. I think the idea of getting to see villains finally play out their schemes uninterrupted could be really fun. However, as old British men everywhere say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. The Riddler #1 opens with a flashback to a guard taking playing cards from The Riddler during one of his innumerable stays at Arkham Asylum. It then follows Edward Nigma as he does his best to foil the security measures at the Wayne Industries building. I think this is where it all goes awry. It might be cool to watch Shia LeBeouff try and beat day hire, blue collar, run of the mill security guards in the real world, but this is The Riddler. There's a reason he's a super villain. The issue is essentially just watching him flawlessly execute his plan. Admittedly, some tension finally comes when the head security guard is revealed to be the one who took his cards all those years ago. The Riddler's plan for vengeance against the poor sap is gloriously gruesome and a perfect showcase of The Riddler's brilliance and insanity.

Ultimately, the book ends without any real cliffhanger, leaving promise at resolution in Batman #25 and you to decide if Eddie's high jinks truly merit $2.99. Did you get to see Edward's alARMing revenge? If so, sound off with your thoughts below.

How I Met Your Mother Season 9 The Locket & Coming Back Reviews

Posted by Anthony Mango - Monday, September 23, 2013

The final season of How I Met Your Mother has started with two episodes back-to-back, titled The Locket and Coming Back.

Rather than run down the episodes in synopsis format, I figured I would do a standard Hits & Misses Reviewpoint-style post.

Download HIMYM Locket Coming Back Episodes Watch Online Season 9

THE MISSES

1. LILY THE DRUNK

One of the things this show has had a lot of fun with in the past is showing Lily as more of a raunchy, disturbed individual than her outside persona would appear. This time around, though, I found it simply annoying. Lily spent the entirety of the hour complaining, looking like a wreck, and just being problematic, despite having the absolute least to complain about and the easiest time out of every character.

2. NO REVEAL OF THE MOTHER'S NAME

The main thing I was hoping to see in this was the reveal of her name. Why? I don't know. I'm just tired of calling her The Mother or Yellow Umbrella or any other pseudonyms.

3. THE TIME FRAME

Maybe I'm jumping the gun, but I don't want to see an entire season of people talking on the phone and traveling. I want to see the How I Met Your Mother that I've watched for 8 seasons, where they interact in their apartments and the bar, can flash back to previous things and flash forward.

Likewise, am I overlooking something, or is there a plot hole with the train situation? Lily and The Mother (name would work so much better there, wouldn't it?) are on the train to Farhampton and we see that Lily has arrived. All leading up to this, we've been seeing The Mother arrive via a cab much later, when it's raining at night and it's either just before or during the ceremony. If she arrived with Lily, why is she re-arriving? Someone fill me in if I'm wrong here, please.

4. TED MOSBY, SAD SACK

Again, I might be jumping ahead, but if Ted spends the entire season acting the way he did in these two episodes, then no wonder a lot of people don't value the character, as he won't be entertaining. I want there to be a huge payoff to the character and this storyline with a lot of emotion, but just because I want drama doesn't mean I want Ted to be a totally humorless, pathetic and pitiful character. That's unnecessary.

THE HITS

1. THE MOTHER TOTALLY WORKS

We haven't seen much of her yet, but I completely buy into The Mother BEING The Mother. She seems to fit well so far in the orchestra of the cast. There's not much to her character as of right now, but I already find her very likable. For someone who has been told more times than he can count that he's extremely similar to Ted Mosby...I can see why Ted would go for her.

2. BARNEY IS SURE OF HIMSELF

I'm sure we'll see something down the line where Barney second-guesses the wedding (after all, we've already seen it with the ducky tie situation), but for now, I like that Barney isn't going straight into that.

3. MARSHAL IS STILL NOT CORRUPTED

Something I've always enjoyed about Marshal's character is that he could have the world shit all over him, but he's still very optimistic overall. Ted can be quite depressed, Lily can get quite psychotic, Robin and Barney can be manipulative and angry, but Marshal is always hoping for the best and expecting that out of everyone.

END NOTES

This was one of my least favorite openers for the show so far, so I'm disappointed. I'm very, very worried that this is going to feel stretched out and too different from the previous seasons. I hope the addition of Daphne to the cast isn't a big deal and she's gone within the next episode or two, as nearly every show that adds a character at the end just focuses on bringing a lot of attention on them and losing it on the main characters that got us to this point.

That being said, if I would put my trust in any show to pull this kind of a drastic thing off...it's How I Met Your Mother. The show has been brilliant so far and I truly think I won't be disappointed by the end. I also fully expect that I will cry when all things are said and done.

What were your thoughts on the episodes? What should the next Reviewpoint be?

For the sake of space and repetitiveness, I'll be referring to BMO as male for this article.

Download free interactive BMO app for iOS
Lookin' good, BMO. Lookin' good.
Upon booting up the app, you're greeted to a bios loading screen showcasing Cartoon Network's logo followed by a list of all of BMO's driver's loading. After the little guy boots up, you're welcomed by none other then BMO himself. Taking up your screen is a front view of BMO as seen in Adventure Time. Tapping his face allows you to interact with the little guy, invoking an "Ouch" as well as a little "Grrrr!". Leaving him be just makes him bored, eventually he even falls asleep.

From here, press the big red button to move on and gain access to games, a camera, ringtones, a soundboard, an alarm clock and the help menu. Press the red button to select a category, the green one to go back a directory and the blue triangle to go to the home screen. Of course, the directional arrows allow you to move through the menu and control the games that are built into the app.

Skipping games for a sec and going to the soundboard, we find a variety of audio clips from the show. These clips are categorized by character. Among the characters to select and hear from are BMO, Finn, Jake, Ice King, Lumpy Space Princess, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline. These clips last only a few seconds at most, but represent the best of each character. Though, I did notice a lack of “BMO Chop” to listen to.

Going to games, you start to see not everything is free. For $0.99 you can unlock Kompy's Kastle and Conversation Parade. Still, Pro Footbal 1861 is available from the start. What should be noted is that these games are similar to what has popped up in the show at some point, being played on BMO by none other than Finn and Jake. For 99 cents, you could do worse. Also, you get to unlock some music tracks. As those familiar with Adventure Time's musical score know, this isn't a bad thing.

Pro Football stars a football-throwing Abe Lincoln in an Atari graphic, one-player game. Playing as Abe, you kick a football thrown at you by another Abe Lincoln back at the other Abe. If done right, you can hit the other Abe in the head like a sock-em-rock-em robot, his head actually bending backwards in an unrealistic fashion. The goal of the game is to return 999 throws.

For a free app, as well as the 99 cent purchase, this is a pretty nifty tie-in to a great animated series. With the way merchandising tie-in games and apps have turned out over the years, you could do much worse.

Great time waster, especially for kids.

Fresh off of his Ignatz win at SPX 2013, I'd like to present Sam Alden. I'm really not sure whether to hug or shake this guy, because everything he makes has such a profound effect on me. What I mean to say is that Sam is a bit of a genius. Whether it's his no-fuss style of cartooning, straight-cut dialogue, or frustratingly simple yet intensely heavy plot, Sam's got me all buggered up. He looks like such a nice guy, but his insides must be tied in knots and shaken so thoroughly that all he can regurgitate is black clouds of graphite and uneasiness.

The front cover to sam alden's newest mini comic household
Cover to Household
Household is Sam's newest comic, which I first heard about through a tweet maybe a week or more ago. I had read Backyard, a mini comic which is still available here, and found it troubling. Not long into Household and I was finding myself experiencing the same complex set of emotions as before and as the story progressed, so did my symptoms. My eyebrows rose, my pupils dilated, and I forgot to breath. Then I came to the last page and had to let it resonate. Then I read it again.

Compositionally, Sam is mainly dealing with the representation of light and shadows bent around gestural forms. No fuss. Its casual and pleasant much like sitting on a park bench in the shade of a tall tree sketching figures passing by. There are points where the shapes are almost abstract, but because of how its laid out, you can generally feel your way through. This is a style so raw we might as well be reading cave paintings. I'm quite positive that what Sam's doing can be replicated on bare stone with a charred stick, but that's not really the point. It's important for the story to be represented in the right style, and for Sam Alden that old graphite stick might as well be a mood machine. Personally, I feel this is his strongest medium, but even whilst straying to a traditional ink, or even digital, much of the characteristic gestural strokes that we see are still utilized. A great example of this can be found here on Top Shelf's 2.0 website in a comic called On Tuesday. Note the looseness primarily in the background and characters not in the immediate foreground.

Download On Tuesday by Sam Alden Online CBR
A panel taken from On Tuesday
What you need to understand is that Sam is really only ever painting you one third of the picture in his books. The art is black and white with messy bits much like the tale's themselves in which there's what looks to be innocent, what you understand is probably wrong, and then there's those messy bits. The lights and darks, the blacks and whites, the good and the bad are clearly defined, but the messy bits are the grey area and a quick examination of the pages will reveal no grey tones used at all. Whenever you are confronted with a question, or something isn't as cut and dry as right and wrong, Sam leaves that controversy to you. There is no guiding hand or bias pushing you either which way, that's on your conscience and for some that's uncomfortable.

Sam is supposedly working on an epic. This actually both excites me and disturbs me simultaneously. I would jump on the chance to read a full length novel by this young genius, but I quiver at the thought of having to take in that much Alden in one shot. It would probably have to be a read a chapter at a time with room to digest between each sitting. What I just described is a fancy, many courses meal which I'm sure it will be. One that I am positive you'd walk away feeling quite full. If it is true, then God speed Mr. Alden. I wish you all the best.

Nowadays, Sam can be found touring at conventions and expo appearances. When he's not out and about, he is also a quite prolific Tumblr and an occasional contributor to the Twitter-sphere. His many works have been spread about the internet, and if you are lucky enough to run into him, try to pick up a mini comic or two and support this budding young talent.

Breaking Bad: "Granite State" Review

Posted by Ronnie Brown - Sunday, September 22, 2013

Welcome to New Hampshire, the "Granite State"! That's right, we've taken a huge step towards catching up to those flash forwards sprinkled throughout season 5 in what was admittedly a weaker episode than last week's, but that was bound to happen. If you go into this episode expecting "Ozymandias" part 2, you're going to be disappointed. But if you take it for what it is- showing the fallout of last week while putting everything in place for the series finale- it was an extremely effective hour of television. Where "Ozymandias" left us completely emotionally drained, "Granite State" just had a heavy sadness weighing over the whole thing, and it also contained one of the darkest moments in the history of the series- but more on that later.

We immediately got to see the fallout of everything from last week, and the best part about it was we finally got to meet Ed the disappearer! He wasn't really what I expected, but then again I don't know what I really expected. Looking back on him now though he was perfect. In a fantastic mirroring of Walt's menacing "We're done when I say we're done" moment from last year, he tried to bully Saul into going with him to New Hampshire, but the lung cancer stopped him in his tracks and sent him into a horrible coughing fit. The great Heisenberg truly has fallen.

For me, one of the most heartbreaking aspects of this episode is even though Walt's menacing phone call last week was meant to free Skyler by making her seem completely innocent, the cops are still after her and will stop at nothing to take her down unless she can give them Walt, whose name and face are now nationally known. Since she couldn't, the house was repossessed and, as Ed informed Walt, it became kind of a tourist attraction for kids, so the city put up a fence around it. That explains the appearance of the house in the flash forward scenes. It was also amazing mirroring when the scene with Skyler in the deposition greatly resembled Walt receiving his initial cancer diagnosis back in the first episode of the series (the high pitched noise drowning everyone out, someone asking if he/she understood what they just said, etc).

Watch Breaking Bad The Final Season Episode 515 Granite State Online Free Stream
This episode finally showed that everyone will indeed remember his name.
The sadness REALLY kicked in starting with Jesse. After rather brilliantly managing to escape his cage and getting caught, Jack decided to punish him. And what an awful, awful punishment it was. Todd luring Andrea out of her house and shooting her in the back of her head while forcing Jesse to watch from the nearby truck was so heart-wrenching for us as an audience to watch, especially since Jesse originally broke up with Andrea to keep her away from this business. Then thinking about how Brock would discover his mother dead on the doorstep the next morning makes it even worse.

After that brutal scene, the episode jumped forward a few months, meaning now we're extremely close to the flash forward scenes showing Walt's 52nd birthday. Here is where I felt more sympathy for Walter White than I had in a long time; he had lost a drastic amount of weight, to the point where his wedding ring would no longer fit on his finger (excellent symbolism of that sliding off too), and he was so desperate for human contact in that cabin that he begged Ed to stay longer and bribed him with $10,000 to do so. He also didn't even have the spirit left to try to find a vein to inject the chemotherapy into. This truly is a broken man. Then even his endeavor to "Ensure" his family had a better future (I'm so sorry for the terrible joke, please don't stop reading) blew up in his face, with his son telling him off and to just die already; again, great callback to season 1 when Junior said basically the same thing, albeit in a drastically different way.

Finally in the end we got to see Heisenberg return. It seemed that Heisenberg was dead and Walter White was about to die with him, ready to turn himself in and get caught in that bar. Leave it to Breaking Bad to surprise me because the absolute LAST people I would've ever expected to see were Gretchen and Elliot. We know that Grey Matter has been a sore spot for Walt since the beginning, but hearing the two of them reduce his contribution to the company down to the name and nothing else was too much for Walt to bear. When Gretchen said that the man everyone knew long ago was gone, that reinvigorated Walt. He realized she was right; Walter White is gone and Heisenberg remains. And Heisenberg would not go out with a whimper. He'd go out with a bang.

"Remember, there's still the kid."

  • I decided to save that image for this section because I just feel so bad for the poor guy. He's been through so damn much and I really hope he can make it out of this okay, but I'm not holding my breath.
  • Todd is really the world's nicest sociopath, from giving Jesse ice cream to telling Andrea "it's nothing personal" even to his intense scene with Skyler (orchestrated by Lydia) in the White House.
  • I really hope that wasn't Saul's last appearance in the series. It very well could be and I don't feasibly see how he could come back from Nebraska, but I still have some hope. Saul deserves a much grander exit.
  • The show got two "fucks" this season. Vince Gilligan and others have said numerous times in the past that AMC gives them one "fuck" a year, so they try to make it count when someone says it. I guess AMC was more generous in the final eight episodes, since Hank got to say it last week and Jesse got one in this week. Both were so effective.
  • Of all the things I want to see answered next week, close to the top of the list would have to be will Huell ever get out of the DEA safe house?! Hank was supposed to come back for him and never did...
  • Finally, congratulations to Anna Gunn (Skyler) for her well-deserved Best Supporting Actress Emmy for last year's episodes! And congratulations to everyone involved for the outstanding drama series Emmy! It's about time! I'm so disappointed that Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul didn't win, but I'm so happy for Anna and the show itself. You all deserve it.
So there you have it. The end is almost here. The use of the extended Breaking Bad theme at the end of "Granite State" and the excellent despite showing no new footage trailer for the series finale have gotten me so incredibly pumped for the finale. I'm personally glad that this episode wasn't nearly as emotionally devastating as "Ozymandias" so we could get a chance to recover, but I'm sure the finale won't be so kind. So come back next week for the last time and join me for "Felina!"

Hiroshi Yamauchi Passes Away at 85

Posted by Travis Goss - Thursday, September 19, 2013

Hiroshi Yamauchi, former president of Nintendo, passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, of pneumonia at the age of 85.

From turning a company who manufactured playing cards and various toys into one of the most popular and well known video gaming companies in the world, Yamauchi helped save the gaming industry from total collapse.

According to Reuters:

Yamauchi was the third-generation head of the family-run business, founded in the ancient Japanese capital of Kyoto in 1889 as a maker of playing cards, and served as president from 1949 until 2002. He was an executive adviser to the company at the time of his death.

With the launch of the Family Computer (better known as the Famicom, the Japanese version of the Nintendo Entertainment System) and the Game Boy, Yamauchi solidified Nintendo's place in the world of video gaming entertainment.

We here at Fanboys Anonymous are indeed saddened by the loss of this major gaming icon.

Thank you, Yamauchi-san.

Bayonetta Has a Movie From Gonzo

Posted by Jeremy Kahn

At the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) it was announced that studio Gonzo would be releasing an animated Bayonetta movie. There has been rumblings for quite sometime that a CGI movie featuring the magic haired witch was in the works. It seems that along the way to become a animated feature, some of these plans have changed, as the movie is now being done in 2D animation resembling the design sketches released alongside the original game.

Early designs for sexy video game character who has magic hair, named Bayonetta
Gonzo, for those that need remembering, is the studio behind such titles as Kiddy Grade and Full Metal Panic! How much involvement Sega has with this movie is unknown at this time as currently they appear to have dropped the IP. The sequel, Bayonetta 2 for the Wii U, is being mostly handled by Nintendo. Still, for Bayonetta fans, this news does prove good as a movie will help push Bayonetta into the public eye more, acting as good publicity. Hopefully, this will result in more sales of the game, eventually garnering even more sequels.

Currently this movie is pegged for Japan with no plans for a western release. Hopefully, someone like Funimation will pick up the rights and bring it over. If this were to happen, would any of you be interested, or do you think this IP should stick just to the game world?

Atlus is Now Officially Part of the Sega Family

Posted by Unknown - Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Anyone who has been a fan of the Persona series or the Megami Tensei series knew about the issues that Atlus, the company who created these series, was going into this Fall. With parent company Index Corp. filing for bankruptcy, these series along with all of the other ones that Atlus creates were in deep trouble and that their futures were in questioned. However, earlier this week, sunshine and good news was given to all of us Atlus fanboys out there! the news was that Sega bought out Index Corp. for a whopping 14 billion Yen, or 141 million dollars, and with this news the future of Atlus was saved! Now that this is out there, we can all feel good knowing that the ever so precious Persona 5 will continue its development (even though very little news has been given on this since 2011/2012). Peace has been restored to the world, and I can now return to playing Persona 4 Golden and drinking my hot cocoa. So with that, I'll end this with a very cute picture.

Judge dredd comic book movie adaption dredd campaign for a sequelA healthy gathering of folk have decided that everyone’s favorite stoney-faced lawman deserves another shot. An ongoing petition and full out campaign has been raging for months now in an effort to try and convince the industry big wigs to pursue making a sequel to the Judge Dredd comic book movie adaption simply titled Dredd. Today (September 18th) has been dubbed the “day of action” referring to a coincidence of the release of this month’s Judge Dredd Magazine and the newest 2000AD prog and supporters of the cause are calling out for individuals to buy copies of the DVD, Blu-Ray, and stream Dredd on Netflix in an effort to keep it on the bestselling charts. The entire fiasco is being referred to as #MakeDreddASequel.

To clarify, this isn't your Sylvester Stallone with his infamous lip quivering, spittle spewing ,“I am the law” 1995 disaster. This Dredd, dutifully portrayed by Star Trek famed actor Karl Urban, is a no-holds-barred cage fight for the Mega-City One enforcer and a superior film in every way. Personally, I didn't think that Urban had the chin for the position, but his gruff disposition came out in spades and more than made up for his lack of jaw. The film itself is a dumbed down sci-fi, action flick that gets straight to the action and suits the Judge’s take no prisoners personality just fine. Accompanied by rookie Judge Anderson, played by the lovely Olivia Thirlby, the duo take on an entire apartment building worth of stooges to get to Ma-Ma, a drug-dealing doozy, and bring her to justice.

The comic book Dredd is published by Rebellion in their weekly magazine 2000AD and has been an ongoing title since 1977. Rebellion, which is a UK owned and operated company, does most of their business on that side of the Atlantic with their core audience residing in the UK and South Africa. In 1990 a dedicated Judge Dredd Magazine started printing and other incarnations followed including a number of DC spin-offs, a Judge Dredd/Aliens and Predator crossover and even a tussle with Marvel's Punisher. Most recently IDW has started their own Judge Dredd run featuring a young Dredd in his first year of law enforcement.

From his inception, Judge Dredd has been the faceless symbol of justice. He is an incorruptible force of righteousness executing swift and merciless sentencing to all who oppose the peace and well-being of Mega-City One. Dredd has been written as both ruthless and at times ultra-violent, but has never deviated from the lawful path even when it’s the law that stands in his way. He is one of the few characters in history to claim such virtuoso. The most striking thing about him though is the fact that the character is written as existing in real time. That is to say, time passes in our world at the same pace as in 2000AD’s Judge Dredd strip which would put Judge Dredd as being over 70 years old! Pretty spry for an old timer.

A panel with judge dredd shooting creeps
Currently the petition for #MakeDreddASequel stands at 80,000 strong which is an outstanding number showing how the film’s cult following and geek community can come together to accomplish big things. Rebellion and 2000AD invite everyone who supports the cause to head here and sign the petition. Ideas have been thrown around already about a possible new threat for Judge Dredd in the film-verse and even Karl Urban has voiced a desire to see the lawman go against the terrible Dark Judges. With this much hype behind it, how could the studios not make a sequel?

If you show an affinity for old stoney-face then drop me a line and don’t forget to run out to the store and pick yourself up a copy of Dredd on DVD or Blu-Ray, or if you are like me and already own it, try watching it on Netflix tonight and lend us geeks a hand.

I've had some time to digest Kick-Ass 2 (my reviewpoint here) and try to think about what I'd like to see in what should be an inevitable sequel to round out the trilogy, Kick-Ass 3. One of the main things is that I'd like to see a redemption for the character of Chris D'Amico, aka Red Mist / The Mother Fucker.

Really...can this face end up being evil in the end?

You might think this is an odd way to go, perhaps even impossible. After all, the last film had him not only killing his mother, but not caring about any of the other deaths around him (some of which he directly caused). Maybe he got his just service by being crippled and that's the end of the story - evil gets punished.

However, I think the character's arc almost demands that he return to the side of good. If he doesn't, what's left for him to do? Keep in mind that the movies don't exactly follow the comics, so we don't know what the storyline is going to be for the third film, but if they left him alive, they clearly have hopes that he will show up in some capacity.

In the first movie, he starts off sympathetic to Kick-Ass and legitimately seems to befriend him, but then his lust for power and to appease his father gets in the way, so he betrays Dave. The two fight and end up stalemating each other. In the second film, he has a motive of vengeance. Kick-Ass also has that same motive and wins. In the third film, he can't just want to get back at Kick-Ass for his deformity and then lose again, nor could he obviously be the one to kill Kick-Ass when he has no limbs.

With the likeability of this character and the general attitude that he's a fuck up, Chris D'Amico needs to do something in Kick-Ass 3 to turn back to the side of good.

They're opposite sides of the same coin - a phrase often used to describe Joker/Batman, Superman/Luthor, etc. What's more interesting than when those two entities join forces?

If the story of Kick-Ass is that anyone can be a hero for any particular reason and in any fashion (exhibited by everyone from Dave's father sacrificing himself for his son, Colonel Stars and Stripes recanting his former criminal ways, etc), then the story needs to end with Dave inspiring someone who is bad to turn good, instead of just "another person that was wronged decides to become a superhero" like everyone else.

That is the ultimate victory. It's something that we can't see happen to Joker or Lex Luthor, as they're ongoing characters, but it can happen with Chris D'Amico.

Let's say that the third film focuses on his uncle, who was teased as being a legitimate brutal threat with a lot of pull, as the main villain. Chris should theoretically be on board to work with him for a while, but at the end, give up information or something that leads to his uncle's downfall and Kick-Ass's victory.

Maybe he sacrifices his life in the process. Maybe he doesn't. That depends on what's set up ahead of time.

But the bottom line is that it will fall quite flat if Chris D'Amico simply goes for another vengeance plot and ends up defeated. There's nothing to gain out of it.

What do you think about this possible option? Would you like to see it incorporated into Kick-Ass 3? What other ideas do you have for the next film?
