On February 27th, Pokémon will be celebrating its 20th anniversary since the original Japanese release of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green in 1996, which would eventually come to the United States on September 28, 1998. Yours truly was a tad late to the party, being confused as all hell what this whole Pokémon thing was about until a few months later. However, I would eventually get hooked on Pokémon Red and move on to Blue, Yellow, Gold and Silver (as well as some offshoots like Pokémon Stadium) before moving on to other things. It's tough to balance a world with an ever-increasing amount of characters, strategies, and so forth.

In fact, balance is a key component to the series as illustrated by the typing each Pokémon gets. There are certain strengths and weaknesses within the rock/paper/scissors patterns built into the game so if you're getting ready for Misty's water-based gym battle, you know you should be catching that Oddish if you chose Charmander or you'll be screwed. Despite the idea of always having a way to counter something at the risk of exposing yourself to that thing's strengths, there isn't absolute total equilibrium. In a lot of ways, the typing advantages make no sense whatsoever other than to help promote some form of stability, but even that has gotten crazily out of hand over the years.

Since Pokémon is on the mind and I've been taking trips down memory lane as of late, I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to try to rationalize the different strengths and weaknesses Game Freak has established for the Pokémon types. I doubt we'll be able to "explain 'em all" but we can definitely try!

Pokémon Type Strengths Super Effective Weaknesses

* NOTE: For nearly every situation where a type does 1/2 damage or is 1/2 resistant, there's no reason other than to try to figure out the mathematics. For example, there's no direct correlation between Bug and Fighting or why Electric is less effective against Grass.

Bug Type Pokémon Advantages

Bug is super effective against Psychic
- Bugs are one of the biggest classifications of things people are most afraid of. Entomophobia, arachnophobia, acarophobia, etc.

Bug is super effective against Grass
- Bugs eat grass.

Bug is super effective against Dark
- ???

Dark Type Pokémon Advantages

Dark is super effective against Ghost
- This could possibly be explained as a reference to purgatory and the idea of oblivion in the spirit world. Alternately, if Dark is translated more to Evil like it is in Japan, then this could represent the corruption of a soul.

Dark is super effective against Psychic
- A fear of the dark (nyctophobia) is extremely common.

Dark is immune to Psychic
- This is probably mostly just to weaken the Psychic type more than anything else, but it could possibly be a reference to how dark thoughts are hard to get rid of, such as addiction or depression, although that sends a fatalist message that you can't overcome your mental health problems, so I doubt that was something in mind when this was decided.

Dragon Type Pokémon Advantages

Dragon is super effective against Dragon
- This seems rather odd, doesn't it? Dragon is resistant to a lot, but doesn't have many strengths and is weak to itself?

* In my mind, Dragon should be super effective against Normal and Fighting, as those tend to represent average people and dragons in mythology are always top tier "impossible to defeat" without the use of magic (Fairy) or a special sword (Steel).

Electric Type Pokémon Advantages

Electric is super effective against Flying
- Lightning resides in the sky, so it makes sense for anything that is higher up in the air to be more susceptible to the electricity that isn't grounded.

Electric is super effective against Water
- Water conducts electricity.

* Shouldn't Steel be also weak to Electric since metal conducts electricity?

Fairy Type Pokémon Advantages

Fairy is super effective against Dark
- Fairy is representative at times of the concept of light, and light overtakes darkness.

Fairy is super effective against Dragon
- In folklore, there's countless examples of magic being used to defeat dragons.

Fairy is super effective against Fighting
- This one doesn't make sense to me, as I would think if anything, it should be the reverse. Fairy types should be daintier and less resistant to something as physical as the Fighting type. Think about how bullies pick on weaker people.

Fairy is immune to Dragon
- This is similar to what was said above, but just taking it to a more extreme level to help make Fairy stronger.

Fighting Type Pokémon Advantages

Fighting is super effective against Dark
- Perhaps this is a reference to how fighting a clean fight is better than fighting dirty?

Fighting is super effective against Ice
- Ice can crack with enough force and since Fighting type is very symbolic of physical strength, just picture how easy it is to break off an icicle with your hands if you're having trouble imagining this type advantage.

Fighting is super effective against Normal
- Do you even lift, bro?

Fighting is super effective against Rock
- Martial artists break cinder blocks with their fists.

Fighting is super effective against Steel
- Man over machine?

Fire Type Pokémon Advantages

Fire is super effective against Bug
- Too many people are quick to justify that this makes sense merely because fire burns bugs, but they forget to remember that fire can also set birds (Flying) and its used to cook fish (Water) and so on. My guess is this was a product of poor planning in Generation I where there were lots of Bug types that would have only been weak to Flying and Rock if not for Fire. Plus, there was a lot of crossover between Bug and Grass in the mindset of a lot of people, so it gets lost in translation. Really, this should be retconned out.

Fire is super effective against Grass
- If you don't understand how something like a forest fire works, I can't help you.

Fire is super effective against Ice
- Heat melts ice. Duh.

Fire is super effective against Steel
- Heat is used to forge metals. Think of a blacksmith.

* If it wasn't so necessary for Fire to be incredibly weak to Water, it would make sense for the 1/2 damage to be lifted, since heat boils water.

Flying Type Pokémon Advantages

Flying is super effective against Bug
- Birds eat bugs.

Flying is super effective against Fighting
- It's almost always advantageous to have the high ground in a fight

Flying is super effective against Grass
-  ???

Flying is immune from Ground
- How are you going to hit something in the air if you're on the ground? Also, shouldn't this be super effective against Ground instead of just immune?

* It's interesting to think of the relationship between Fire and Flying that doesn't exist. Flying is representative of wind, which can be used to extinguish fires. However, anyone who has started a campfire knows how it needs oxygen to grow, so Flying type would be essentially fanning the flames. In a weird way, Flying should be both super effective against Fire as well as something that helps it get stronger, like how Sunny Day boosts the Solar Beam attack but also the strength of Fire moves.

Grass Type Pokémon Advantages

Grass is super effective against Ground
- Plants grow in the ground.

Grass is super effective against Rock
- This is the same as Ground basically. Also, look at how grass can eventually split a rock if it grows inside a crack. This is kind of a stretch, though, and if I were balancing things out, I would have kept this separate from the Ground advantage.

Grass is super effective against Water
- Plants take in water for resources.

Ghost Type Pokémon Advantages

Ghost is super effective against Ghost
- ???

Ghost is super effective against Psychic
- While I can justify this by saying it represents being possessed, shouldn't the idea of exorcism reverse the damage, making Psychic super effective against Ghost in return?

Ghost is immune to Normal
- Our plane of existence can't interact with the ethereal realities

Ghost is immune to Fighting
- This is the same philosophy as the immunity to Normal; ever tried to punch an intangible ghost?

Ground Type Pokémon Advantages

Ground is super effective against Electric
- Grounding out electricity.

Ground is super effective against Fire
- ???

Ground is super effective against Poison
- The only thing I could think of is how landfills are used to store garbage.

Ground is super effective against Rock
- Earthquakes.

Ground is super effective against Steel
- Nature over man-made structures, possibly?

Ground is immune to Electric
- Again, grounding out electricity.

Ice Type Pokémon Advantages

Ice is super effective against Dragon
- Since dragons are often lizards, which are cold-blooded, and Dragon needed some weaknesses in Generation I, I guess this was chosen as a means to counteract how Dragons can use many Fire attacks.

Ice is super effective against Flying
- Is this a reference to how birds migrate to escape the cold weather?

Ice is super effective against Grass
- Look at how trees bloom in the spring, but during the colder months, lose their leaves

Ice is super effective against Ground
- Frost over the ground?

* Shouldn't Ice type also be effective against Water because it's able to freeze it?

Normal Type Pokémon Advantages

Normal is super effective against nothing
- Well that's lame

Normal is immune to Ghost
- This is a two-way street between the normal world and paranormal not interacting with each other.

Poison Type Pokémon Advantages

Poison is super effective against Grass
- Herbicide and weed killer.

Poison is super effective against Fairy
- ???

* Poison should really be super effective against Water and Flying for polluting the oceans and the air. It should also be super effective against Bug (instead of Fire) because of bug spray.

Psychic Type Pokémon Advantages

Psychic is super effective against Fighting
- Mind over matter / brain over brawn.

Psychic is super effective against Poison
- Holistic medicine.

Rock Type Pokémon Advantages

Rock is super effective against Bug
- Simply put, rocks smash bugs.

Rock is super effective against Fire
- ???

Rock is super effective against Flying
- Killing two birds with one stone.

Rock is super effective against Ice
- Rock tools are used to chip away at ice.

Steel Type Pokémon Advantages

Steel is super effective against Fairy
- Just as Fairy beats Dragon in folklore, if the magician is evil by any means, then the hero is equipped with a sword to take them down.

Steel is super effective against Ice
- Just as rock tools chip away at ice, metal ones are even better at doing the same.

Steel is super effective against Rock
- Keeping with the theme of tools, rock beats ice, but since metal is stronger, that's what's used to break up stone. Think about drills and construction equipment.

Steel is immune to Poison
- The only justification I can see for this is that a lot of Steel Pokémon are somewhat inorganic. However, if Poison is essentially a variation of acidic things as well, shouldn't it be corrosive to metals as well, making it super effective against Steel?

* There's a glaring omission here in that Steel should be super effective against Dragon, since the heroes of the old tales where dragons exist almost always slay them with swords.

* Wouldn't it make sense, at least to an extent, for Steel to be super effective against Grass due to lawnmowers and such?

Water Type Pokémon Advantages

Water is super effective against Fire
- Water puts out fire. Duh.

Water is super effective against Ground
- Water erodes the earth.

Water is super effective against Rock
- Water erodes the earth.

Keeping all of this information in mind, this is a lineup I think makes a lot more sense:

Pokémon type super effective fixed
* Note: In the years that have passed since writing this, I've changed my mind to feel that a few more things should be altered compared to the graphic above.

* Ground OR Rock should be able to take down Fire. Not both.

* Flying and Fire should have some sort of counter action. Heat rises and wind helps fire spread. However, a powerful enough gust of wind takes out fire, like blowing out candles.

* Bug shouldn't be weak to Flying, cause Flying isn't the Bird type. Just cause something is Flying doesn't mean it has a beak and eats bugs. Instead, it could be a cloud, and that has nothing to do with bugs. Theoretically, maybe Fighting should be effective against Bug, since you "squash like a bug." That does make Fighting pretty damn powerful, though, so...

* Normal is no longer weak to Fighting.

* I'm second-guessing making Ghost super-effective to Fighting. It should probably just be immune to those moves, rather than Ghost things actually hurting Fighting.

* Maybe Fairy shouldn't be weak to Fighting. If that's the case, Fairy could use another weakness. My gut says Psychic. Maybe it doesn't need another weakness, though. I'm open to discussion.

* For fun, I figured if there were any other types that could be added, it would be Sound and/or Rubber/Plastic. Theoretically, Sound would be effective against Ice and Rock? Weak to Flying (sound doesn't travel in space), Water and Ground as they muffle sound? What about Electric? Rubber would be immune to Electric, weak to Fire, Steel and Ice, resistant to Water and Fighting, maybe effective against Ground since it bounces. Plastic would probably be the same, but not immune to Electric or have any interaction with Ground.

That's the best that I can do after all these years, but if you have any suggestions for those without answers, tell us! Leave a comment below with your thoughts, your theories, and your preferences!

Making the Grade: Deadpool Review Report Card

Posted by Anthony Mango - Friday, February 12, 2016

Welcome to the latest edition of Making the Grade—a review format segment here on Fanboys Anonymous where we break down the five major components of something and give it a score based on the standard report card lineup: A, B, C, D, and F for a total failure.

The next report card is for the long awaited film about The Merc with the Mouth, Deadpool.

HD Deadpool photos screen shots poster

Deadpool—directed by Tim Miller; written by Rhett Reese (screenplay), Paul Wernick (screenplay), Rob Liefeld (character), Fabian Nicieza (character); starring: Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson / Deadpool), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), TJ Miller (Weasel), Ed Skrein (Ajax), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Gina Carano (Angel Dust) and Leslie Uggams (Blind Al).

WARNING - SPOILERS BELOW

CHARACTERS: B

Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, aka the titular protagonist of the movie, is spot-on. Fans have been clamoring for this character to be brought to life on the big screen properly for years, particularly after the complete misstep of X-Men Origins: Wolverine's interpretation. Thankfully, there's nothing to fear here, as this is indeed the Deadpool we know and love from the comics. Anybody who was worried that it wouldn't be faithful has nothing to worry about, and I can't imagine any other team being able to pull it off as well as this team did.

Unfortunately, if I'm judging this movie based on all of the characters as a whole, I can't score it in the A-range. Everyone other than Deadpool is pretty thin. Sure, the characters work in their respective supporting roles, but they're so overshadowed by Deadpool that there's basically no meat to anyone else.
For example, if you ask anyone that has just watched the movie what the name of Gina Carano's character is, they probably won't be able to tell you. It's Angel Dust. I'm pretty sure she's referred to as just "Angel" and only once in an offhand comment. The bad guys are just the bad guys, like out of some '80s action flick. I'm still really confused about the choice to add Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead into the movie as the two representatives of the X-Men branch, but I have no complaints about them in particular, as they were fun extra additions to throw into the mix.

This is a Deadpool movie where everyone's going to see it because of him, not because of anyone else, so it's somewhat excusable, but that's why it doesn't reach even an A from me.

ACTING: B

As per usual with a superhero film, you're not going to see performances that will be hailed as Oscar-worthy outside of the extreme rare exceptions (Heath Ledger as The Joker being almost the only example) so you have to grade it on a sort of sliding scale.

Ryan Reynolds is the man, capturing the spirit of Deadpool better than anybody else could have done it. There's no doubt that he'll go down as one of the top 5 people to have fully embraced a character and translated it to film without changing too much or trying to put his own spin on it and thus, deviating from what the fans love.

T.J. Miller's Weasel left much to the imagination, sadly. This new version of Colossus is better than the Daniel Cudmore one (sorry dude, but maybe you can be Captain Marvel in the Shazam movie to make up for it, eh?) We don't see anything from Copycat, just her normal self, but I bought into the relationship between Morena Baccarin and Ryan Reynolds, so points go to both. Ed Skrein as Ajax is certainly just going through the motions, as is Gina Carano as Angel Dust.

VISUALS (FX, MAKEUP, COSTUMES, SETS): B

Major points for the Deadpool costume looking just like it does in the comics, complete with the eyes. There needs to be more of a willingness to do this in comic book films instead of always cutting the eye holes out and ignoring the blank white slots.

If you really examine things, you can tell that this movie doesn't have the same budget as some other Hollywood blockbuster films, but that doesn't matter. What they have to work with, they pull off very well. Not once did I think to myself that the makeup for Wade's deformed body looked too unrealistic, nor was I spotting fake looking cardboard props or anything of the sort.

MUSIC & SOUND: A

Very similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, this movie utilized old classic songs for laughs and will be revitalizing a lot of them on iTunes, I'm sure. I was also a big fan of the Deadpool theme song's lyrics.

TONE (ACTION, ROMANCE, COMEDY): A+

The tone of this film was the biggest thing separating it from normal superhero movies, so much so that it caused all of the delays. How could a comic book movie filled with graphic violence, language, nudity, and zany fourth wall breaks really have mass appeal?

Well, this movie accomplishes everything it set out to do in all of those regards, and it seems like audiences are loving it. The violence is a tad more restricted than I thought it was going to be, and surprisingly the romance has a bigger presence than I had predicted. The comedy is unlike any other superhero film that has come out, and you get a good feel of that from the opening credits to the very end post-credits tag.

FINAL GRADE: A

Bottom line, you're going to love this movie or hate it. If it doesn't appeal to you, you won't get it, everyone else will look like complete idiots for being fans of it, and it's going to drive you nuts hearing about it for years to come. If this is your type of thing and you were interested in the character, you'll have a smile on your face for the entire time you're watching it.

Rowling announced today on Pottermore that the official scripts from the upcoming two-part stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I and II, will be available in print and digital versions as a "Special Rehearsal Edition" later this summer, shortly after the stage production's debut.

J.K. Rowling announces 8th edition of Harry Potter story

As soon as die-hard Harry Potter fans watched the golden trio wave off their children at platform nine and three-quarters, 19 years after the Battle of Hogwarts, they quickly craved for more from J.K. Rowling, the author that penned all seven books in the magical series turned major film franchise. The announcement of a stage production excited every muggle around the world, though plane tickets, a hotel, and a ticket to the performance would cost you a hefty penny (better stop at Gringotts). Fortunately for the rest of us, Rowling will be releasing the script simultaneously with the play's London premiere in July.

"Pottermore is proud to be a key part of the multi-platform effort that will allow the epic eighth Harry Potter story to be read and enjoyed by a wider, global audience," Susan L. Jurevics, Chief Executive Officer of Pottermore, said in a press release. "With the script eBook of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child helping to lead the way, 2016 will be one of our most exciting years yet. We have other innovative content initiatives coming soon that will also thrill and engage our vast global audience of Wizarding World fans as well as create new ones."

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child picks up right where we left off, and will be staged in two parts due to the "epic nature of the story." Life has never been easy for the boy that lived; we learned in the epilogue to Deathly Hallows that he is now a Auror for the Ministry of Magic and father of three: James, Albus, and Lily. His youngest son, Albus (who was sorted into Gryffindor, the house of both his parents, Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley), faces the weight of his family's legacy, learning that darkness comes from unexpected places.

The Special Rehearsal Edition of the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a comprised version of the play's script and will only be available for a limited time as the script is subject to change prior to the opening performances. A definitive collector's edition will be available at a later date.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, an original play by Jack Thorne based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, will debut at the Palace Theatre in London on July 30 and is the first official Harry Potter story presented in a theatrical production. In collaboration with Little, Brown Book Group in the United Kingdom and Scholastic in the United States and Canada, the print editions will be published on 12:01 am on July 31 (Harry Potter's birthday), priced at $14.99.

The wizarding world has greatly expanded recently, with new content on Pottermore released earlier this year that included information on four of the eleven prestigious wizarding schools around the world: Mahoutokoro in Japan, Uagadou in Africa, Castelobruxo in the Brazilian rainforest, and Ilvermorny in the United States (information still yet to be released). Pottermore also brought back the Sorting Hat and Ollivander's wand shop.

J.K. Rowling will also be making her screenwriting debut with her film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, taking us deeper into the wizarding world on November 18.

Are you excited to expand your Harry Potter book collection? We did our waiting—NINE years of it—in Azkaban! Will you be one of the chosen ones to see the stage performance in London?

Fanboys Fix It: X-Men Origins: Wolverine Movie Problems & How To Correct Them

Posted by Anthony Mango - Sunday, February 7, 2016

Welcome to the second edition of Fanboys Fix It, where instead of just complaining about what we don't like about something, we try to figure out how we can make it better. With the upcoming release of Deadpool, this was the perfect time to examine why this movie took years to get made and almost never came to be at all. This all stems from the massively disappointing fourth entry in the Fox X-Men franchise, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The first two X-Men and X2: X-Men United did very well, but things went to shit with the third installment, X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006. Everyone was hoping that this standalone Wolverine film would bring the series back on track, but it turned out to be another step in the wrong direction, causing the studio to rethink their strategy for future films.

Why is it so bad? What is wrong with the movie? How do you fix X-Men Origins: Wolverine?

Let's take a look.

Fanboys Fix Xmen Origins Wolverine Movies Problems

Core Problem #1: Tone

Keep in mind that this series is all about hindsight, where I try to get as close as possible to the movie that they clearly wanted to make while also taking the necessary steps to make adjustments for the better. That's hard to do, though, when the movie itself doesn't know what it wants to be.

Sometimes, this wants to be a gritty, serious story about two brothers who either embrace their inner beast (Sabretooth) or reject the killer inside him in hopes of being more normal and less feral (Wolverine). Other times, this movie thinks it's this campy "superhero film" of a different era where it needs to be all spectacle and no substance.

The fight choreography is the easiest way to see how silly this can be. The action is often unrealistic as hell, with people flipping around in impossible ways (even for mutants) for no reason other than someone said it would look cool for them to flip—and it doesn't. Am I the only one who thinks Victor is a badass in a lot of ways but is laughably stupid looking when he gets on all fours and pounces in the middle of a bar? Oooh, I get it, that's because he's like a sabretooth tiger. Well, he looks ridiculous, and that type of on-the-nose writing makes me shocked that we didn't see Logan actually come across a wolverine in the forest that acts as his spirit animal and points him in the right direction to find Kayla.

Since it's practically impossible to balance two extremes like serious/silly, neither ends up working. The lighter stuff takes out any emotional impact from the darker stuff and the darker stuff makes it so it can't get so weird as to be funny and entertaining in that way, and thus we end up with something that pleases nobody.

Core Problem #2: Kayla Silverfox & Emma Frost

Normally, I advocate trying to fit in references to characters all over the place and if you can insert someone from the comics in a role rather than make something else up, you should go ahead and do that. To some extent, this movie does follow that rule, but it also does it in a way that is detrimental to the overall picture.

Emma Frost should not have been in this movie. First off, she's not even officially Emma Frost in the credits, but just "Emma" despite being a blonde mutant woman with diamond skin…named Emma. Second, as far as I'm aware, she's not related in any way to Silver Fox like she is in the movie. For some reason, they decided that they should be sisters, and this is to give Kayla a reason to betray Logan, and it all just works backward.

If Kayla needed a sister, why is it Emma? Because Emma wasn't used in the movies yet? More so, Kayla doesn't need a sister, because she doesn't need to have a reason to betray Logan, because she doesn't need to betray Logan! It's not a twist that got the audience reeling and it didn't amount to anything. After the reveal, Logan wants to just leave but then comes back to save her, and then she dies anyway. You could skip all of this nonsense by just having her die when she fake-dies in the movie.

In that scenario, Kayla dies as a legitimate good person who did nothing wrong and was just in the way. It gives Logan more of a reason to hate Victor because he actually did kill her instead of just faking it like in the film. The way it goes now, he basically seems to forgive Victor despite how John Wraith is dead. I guess that guy didn't mean much to Logan, right?

Kayla's role in the film is to love Logan, get killed so he can go on a hunt, reveal that she is still alive and that she was part of the ruse but only to get her sister (who isn't a factor beforehand) out of captivity, let Logan save her sister, and then tell Stryker to leave her alone while she dies. By the end, Logan doesn't remember her anyway, so it's all a moot point. She could have died at the beginning and not made any more appearances, rendering the Emma character superfluous so she can be saved for other movies. Same story, less mess to clean up, even better results.

Core Problem #3: Gambit

A running theme for this movie is pointless characters and just as Emma is one, Gambit falls victim to the same issue.

The list of events Gambit does in the movie is the following: 1) throws a card at Logan because he thinks he's coming after him, 2) starts to say this and easily gets knocked down by Logan who is busy with other shit, 3) starts fighting Logan again but loses, 4) takes Logan to Three Mile Island and promptly goes...somewhere...to do...something...while everything else is happening, 5) pops up to save Logan from being crushed under cement even though he would survive it anyway, 6) tells him his name despite that being on the dog tags anyway, 7) fucks off never to be seen again in the lore as of yet.

Once again, they must have included Gambit into this movie just because they wanted to put Gambit into the movie. Nothing he does is instrumental to the plot in a way that only he could do it. If Logan were to find out there Stryker was located by anyone else (Blob, for one, who tells him to find Gambit just so Gambit can tell him the same information) then he can just go there on his own. He damn sure leaves on his own and fights the villain without Gambit's help, so there's no need for him.

Nixing him from the movie also means we don't have the Taylor Kitsch version. While he wasn't horrible, he definitely wasn't the Gambit we deserve.

Core Problem #4: Deadpool

Speaking of getting a bad version of a character that we don't deserve rather than something better, this is the part of the film that gets the most amount of criticism, and with good reason.

Let's just start this section off by saying that somehow, they took a character that is insanely popular because of the crazy things he says and goes by the nickname The Merc with the Mouth and they sewed his mouth shut! WHAT?? That's like doing a Green Arrow movie where he doesn't use a bow and arrow, or a Daredevil movie where Matt Murdock can see perfectly fine.

At the beginning of the movie, we're introduced to Wade Wilson who is very skilled at killing people and also won't shut the hell up. He's childish and annoying. That's the Deadpool we're getting in this new movie coming out in a few days and thank God, because that's all we see of that version of the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The next time we see him, he's been experimented on as Weapon XI, can't speak, is controlled by a computer, and has the powers of teleportation along with Cyclops', and these two swords coming out of his arms.

Oh yeah, and he's the villain, which should have been Omega Red instead. Arkady Rossovich could have been introduced as an enemy from the start, seeing as he's tied to Russia and Stryker had recruited Team X for America. Since part of his power is draining life force, he could cancel out the healing factor from Logan and Victor, evening the odds for a three-way fight between them. The "big reveal" at the end—instead of it being Kayla's deception—could be that Stryker was working with Rossovich all along, as he doesn't really care about Russia, nor does Stryker really care about America. Both of them are in it for the Mutant Agenda more than anything else and that is where their priorities lie. When else are we going to see Omega Red in a movie other than one centralized around Wolverine? He's big enough for that type of film but not for something starring a whole team.

If you want to go really balls out with this, Gambit's role in the movie should have been Deadpool's so we have the climax of the film being Deadpool and Wolverine teaming up against Omega Red and Sabretooth. You can even tie in Deadpool's scarring to Red's life force draining abilities, which sets up why those two are at odds with one another. Then, Deadpool can get the solo film we're seeing now, and maybe that would have stopped Ryan Reynolds from doing Green Lantern and getting a huge setback in his career.

Core Problem #5: The Opening Credits

Right now you're probably thinking "What?! That was the best part!" Indeed it was, and that's why it's on this list. The montage of Wolverine and Sabretooth going through the different wars is so awesome that when I saw this in theaters, my expectations for the rest of the movie went up so far, only to be let down even more. I had gone into this hating X-Men: The Last Stand and with very low expectations but with high hopes as well. This movie started off in a way that made me temporarily think that my fears were pointless and that I was in for an awesome ride, but then it soured and continued to suck.

Basically, they dangled a carrot and then when I went to reach for it, they slapped me in the face and said I was wrong for thinking this wouldn't be a bad movie. Thankfully, X-Men: First Class was better, The Wolverine was a step up from this and X-Men: Days of Future Past blew me out of the water, so now I don't know what to think about X-Men: Apocalypse.

Miscellaneous Extra Flaws & Nitpicking

Those are the biggest structural problems to the movie, but there are some other, smaller things that I feel could have been changed for the better as well. I can't remember every little thing, but a few that stand out to me are as follows:
  1. CGI on Charles Xavier – Holy shit does he look like he's a wax statue!
  2. Bolt – Stupid. A waste of Dominic Monaghan, too, as he's better than that role.
  3. Adamantium Bullet – This is how Logan loses his memory? A gunshot to the head? There's no explanation for how this works other than them just saying it does. The bullet falls out just like any other, so why are his memories erased? Why is it conveniently not memories like how to talk and walk or anything of the sort?
Well, there you have it. The movies have figured out a way to reset the timeline and get rid of some of the problems with this film, but they unfortunately can't erase it from our actual reality.

What do you think of the changes that I would have made?
Do they make the movies better or worse?
What changes would you make?

6 FLICKS PICKS

Which films make the cut?

Is it weird that there seems to be more of a presence for horror this month than romantic comedies? I would think with Valentine's Day going on, that would be different. Honestly, the weird thing about that is I would prefer more of those films, given the layout of what is coming out this month. This is a struggle to find six to stand out, particularly as there aren't many releases to start with!

6. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies — This film gets the sixth spot not because I want to see it, but because I'd rather see it than all of the other options. The concept seems ridiculous and I really can't imagine this being anything better than something like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Better options need to come out in February.

5. How to Be Single — I think I would be much more interested in this if the two leads weren't Dakota Johnson and Rebel Wilson, as I'm not exactly a fan of either of them. Of course, this movie isn't marketed toward my demographic in the first place, as everything screams the 18-35 female audience instead of trying to appeal to the 28-year-old guys out there. Perfectly fine for those movies to exist, and hopefully it's great for the people that are interested in it. This is a date movie for sure.

4. Ben-Hur — Here's where I have to admit that I haven't seen the original Ben-Hur and it would be blasphemy for me to see this first, right? Still, I'm curious how this will turn out. The story is much more interesting than a lot of the other films coming out, and the possibility that it could be an improvement on a classic makes it rank so high.

3. Race — The title alone has me intrigued. That's so perfect. Sports movies aren't normally my thing, but they can be done well. This has all the feelings of Oscar bait, yet it's coming out at a time where it doesn't seem to be playing to that crowd. Also, I'm very curious about Jason Sudeikis as he's a predominantly comedic actor. If I hear enough positive reviews, I might have to give this a watch.

2. Hail, Caesar! — Boy is this a tough month for me, as I have to even admit that I don't love the Coen brothers like everyone else does. Most of their films that I've seen, I've felt are overrated. Everyone seems pumped for Hail, Caesar! but if I judge it based on my previous track record, I would probably be underwhelmed. That being said, I can't deny that this seems very much up my alley in more ways than one and given such a slow month, this looks to be a lock.

1. Deadpool — The only one I know for sure that I'll be seeing in theaters is Deadpool as I've even already ordered my tickets. This is going to either be one of my favorite comic book movies of all time, or I'll be thoroughly disappointed at its failure to capitalize on its potential. Deadpool took forever to get to theaters and the marketing campaign has been absolutely amazing, so I commend them for their efforts. He's a great character with a different sensibility than most, which means this could be a very welcome change of pace from the litany of superhero movies that have come before and will come after.
