Benedict Cumberbatch dominated the DreamWorks panel at San Diego Comic Con.

The event had been intended to promote the upcoming film Penguins of Madgascar – but Sherlockmania took over.

Sherlock mania at Comic-Con

DreamWorks Animation opened the biggest presentation at Comic Con on Thursday, offering a sneak peak at the upcoming film Penguins of Madagascar. Yet despite some very funny scenes that parodied Werner Herzog and a panel that included popular Comic Con veteran Craig Ferguson and Oscar-winning actor John Malkovich, it was Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch, who makes his voice acting debut in Penguins as a Wolf named Agent Classified, who dominated the event.

Members of the audience had been lining up since 6 am to get into Hall H, the most desirable exhibitor hall at San Diego's Comic Con with a capacity of 6,500, and a significant number of those who had arrived dressed in Sherlock costume, despite this being a presentation that had nothing to do with the show whatsoever.

This was the first sign that Sherlockmania had taken hold. As the panel began, Craig Ferguson, the moderator, threatened, "If anyone mentions the S word, Comic Con will be cancelled."

Benedict Cumberbatch certainly knows how to work an audience as well. While the mass of Sherlockians are screaming and cheering, Benedict dances across the stage to Daft Punk's 'Doin it Right'.

The panel's Q&A became a one-man show. Six of the eight questions in the Q&A portion of the Penguins of Madagascar panel were directed at Cumberbatch, who politely batted a few over to Malkovich.

One audience member mentioned that she was studying media in the UK, and Cumberbatch was happy to engage in a conversation. "How's it going?" he asked. On finding out she studied at Queen Mary University in Twickenham, Cumberbatch said, "Lovely part of the world, we film Sherlock near there, you know."

When asked how he prepared for his role, Cumberbatch responded with an answer that took down the house.

"I worked in Yellowstone park as a wolf for awhile. I was accepted by the pack quite quickly. It got a bit hairy, no pun intended, when I became the alpha male. Eventually I realized that two of the other wolves were Christian Bale and Daniel Day-Lewis."

What has been your favorite news from Comic Con this year so far? Why not let us know in the comments section.

As we push forward to San Diego Comic-Con International (it's a mouthful, isn't it?), we have some interesting news about the future of the Avengers' series, namely that of Robert Downey Jr.'s possible return as Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr. (henceforth RDJ) stated in an interview that "It's down to Kevin (Feige, Marvel Studios president) and Ike (Perlmutter, CEO of Marvel Entertainment) and Disney to come to us with what the proposal is, and that's on us to agree or disagree."

Studly Handsome Man Sexy Robert Downey Junior
What does this mean? It means show the money, Marvel, and you got me as Tony Stark for another go. I don't blame RDJ for striking while it hot, and Marvel films are the hottest thing around now. I wouldn't call him greedy either. He is being smart and shrewd. Is there anyone better to be Tony Stark in the world? Marvel knows what a incredible commodity they have in this Avengers group and that RDJ is the lynch pin to the whole thing.

There was a time during negotiations where RDJ argued on the side of the other actors, taking a role as a Daddy for the younger pups so they wouldn't get screwed over on their new contracts. That's pretty damn cool. Good for him. Marvel is notorious for being tightwads when it comes to paying actors in their films, so it's great a veteran like RDJ can step in and be demanding enough to get everyone what they deserve. If the cast of the film that had the largest weekend opening in history and is currently the 3rd highest grossing film ever made doesn't deserve a raise than I don't want to live in this world.

Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man 2 triangle armor
After Iron Man 3's success it seemed like nothing could stop RDJ, and even though he said  he was probably done with the role, I'm glad to see him come back. Why the hell not, right? Let him do it until he keels over. The same with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Harrison Ford as both Han Solo and Indiana Jones. I'd watch Ford play Indy in a damn wheelchair, screw the haters. RDJ has earned the right to wear the suit for as long as he wants.

There's another quote from him where's it obvious that the man is confident (as he should be) but also understands the nature of the beast: "It's the thing of: Why give up the belt when it feels like you can barely get jabbed?" he said. "Most people are saying that right when they get knocked out." With previews of Avengers: Age of Ultron coming hot for Comic-Con this weekend, and the film expecting to be one of the highest grossers of 2015, what could be the biggest year for film ever, I see no potential knockout for RDJ or Marvel.

celebrities Robert Downey Jr suit photosForbes recently listed RDJ as the highest-paid actor for June 2012 to June of 2013. He made $75 million during that time. What's crazy is that during this time period he had no new films released. The Avengers was in theaters in 2012, sure, and Iron Man 3 was in 2013, but all that money came after the fact.

If he can ride two movies for that much cash-ola, of course he wants to continue as Iron Man! Who wouldn't want to? His Tony Stark is one of the best things about the series, and Marvel would be insane not to give him what he wants. They are making too much money now to stop.

So what does everyone else think? Is it a good idea for Robert Downey Jr. to return as Iron Man? Should Marvel park a truck full of cash in his front yard to get him back?

After the final episode of 24: Live Another Day finished with impressive ratings, I think it's safe to say that everyone's favorite spy thriller badass Jack Bauer will indeed live to fight on another day, battling terrorists around the world like he was built to. The long gap between Season 8 and this (4 years, while they were trying to get a movie together) helped super-charge the participants and give Jack and company some much-needed energy. This latest season, more of a mini-series of 12 episodes called Live Another Day, is a slam-bam action romp of the highest order, and Kiefer Sutherland has never been hotter and more intense as Jack Bauer. Believe me, that's saying something, because Jack is simply the most intense, hardcore TV character of all time.

This latest incarnation is further proof of this fact. After so many episodes, lethargy can seep into a show, and perhaps it has happened before with 24. By season 6 they had run out of juice. The Writers Guild of America strike of 2007–2008 gave them a break for a year and a half; when they came back with the TV movie 24: Redemption they got some of their mojo back and were off and running the last 2 years of the show. The sense of urgency they had in the last half of season 8, right after they knew the show was ending, gave us all a wild final ride. The 12 hours we saw with Live Another Day felt the same: passionate, powerful, and incredible.

You feeling luck, punk? Huh?

So if they go forward with these half seasons, it might work out well. There has been nothing definite yet, but the show runners have said that while they were worn out a bit 4 years ago after the go, go, go of the previous 8 seasons and 192 episodes, they felt like this last one was a breath of fresh air and gave them some energy. It felt that way for us fans too, like a fresh, exciting, nonstop thrill ride that should be compared to the same level of the best 24 ever gave us. The producers also said they would need another compelling storyline to follow that would excite them enough to want to do it This latest, dealing with global terrorism and drone strikes, was both topical and pulse-pounding. It worked in many ways as a deep, emotional, character-driven story from the perspective of the those people affected by drone strikes in other countries and how they might react if given the right resources. The villain in Live Another Day has my sympathy, because her husband was killed by a U.S. drone strike and, although I think she obviously overreacted, I totally get where she was coming from. How would any of us feel if our families were victims of collateral damage? I'd be pretty pissed off.

Jack's had a bad day; best to stay out of his way.
24: Live Another Day also reminded us why we love Jack Bauer so much. No one in the history of TV or film has sacrificed more for his country. If they move on with this story, Jack's own personal stakes should be the focus. The next season should be called 24: Jack Bauer—Out for Blood or something. Cheesy, sure, but you know what I mean. Part of what disappointed me about Day 6 was that they skipped over Jack's incarceration in the Chinese prison. The season started, and it was like, oh yeah, that's over. What? C'mon, I wanted to see Jack in there kicking some butt and trying to escape. I guess in the long run that made the travesty/heroism of his life all the more powerful. Bauer spent over a year in a Chinese prison and was tortured. Ouch. He has also lost countless people in his life, including a wife and other romantic interests. Jack has been through a lot, so why not follow up right where Live Another Day leaves off and see him in Russia, trying to either foil a terrorist plot or attempting to escape from prison. Yes, I've got the title! That's it: 24: Jack's Prison Break. Still cheesy, but screw it, it's 24.

Still, how long can it go on? Sutherland is great, but he's also a heavy drinker, and it's beginning to show. His face looks haggard and older than just a few years should have brought him, and it's a shame. You gotta call a spade a spade sometimes, and Kiefer is beginning to show the wear and tear of the job. For a show like 24 this part of his character makes perfect sense. Jack Bauer is all kinds of tore up. After what he's been through, it's a shock the man can even walk, much less run around and kick ass like a beast. So as a fan of the series, I want to see it continue, and this may be blasphemous to say but I'm okay if Kiefer takes a smaller part of the whole thing than he has been. Jack is amazing, but he's given us over 200 episodes of amazing and perhaps it's time to pass the baton, or 9mm, whatever the case may be.

Who is his heir apparent? No need to worry because the person to take over is already on the show. The character of Kate Morgan, played by Yvonne Strahovski, is as much of a badass as Jack is. Kate is simply a female version of Bauer and could take over the spotlight with ease. I'm serious. She has some serious baggage like Jack does, losing her husband to conspiracy and suicide before the events of 24: Live Another Day took place, and has plenty of skills to help her along the way. Jack could act as a mentor while she gets some more field experience in her own show. Let's call it 24: Kate Kicks Ass. Some counterterrorist unit is set up anywhere in the world and Kate is an agent there, just like 24 has always been; they have the machine up and running now, and although I would love to see some more with Kiefer, I don't see any reason why they can't spin it off with a great character for which they have already laid the foundation. They could make it 24: International.

Jack meet Kate, female Jack.
In fact, that's bloody brilliant. When they moved the location out of Los Angeles for Day 7 it was a good change of scenery, and moving it to London was a nice move too. What has been so great about this mini-series, besides the fact we get to see Jack kicking ass left and right, is the topical nature of the premise; drone strikes are a real thing these days, and nothing to mess around with. They are a controversial topic and something that should be addressed, the good and the ill gained with their use. 24 deserves to go on; I'm not saying forever, but when you look at the history of the show, this mini-series promises more to come and in a big way. When they ground their gears into mediocrity with Day 6, the Writers Strike caused a delay in Day 7. It was the best thing that could have happened for them. They did a 2-hour special called 24: Redemption and kick started the last two stellar seasons. With this recent 4-year break, they have recharged and come back better than ever. Why not more?

So should Jack come back? What are your thoughts about them spinning off without him?

Should The Rock be Black Adam or Captain Marvel in Shazam?

Posted by Anthony Mango - Thursday, July 24, 2014

Captain Marvel Dwayne Johnson Shazam The Rock Black AdamThe Rock has been long rumored to be up for plenty of superhero roles over the past few years, but speculation ramped up more than ever before when the story was broken that he had been in talks with DC and Warner Bros.

Many fans assumed that this was a sign that he would be playing John Stewart and thus, the Green Lantern who would be featured in the upcoming Justice League film. However, out of all of the rumors that have been spread around, there is one that has survived the longest: The Rock would be in a Shazam film.

Dwayne Johnson has added more fuel to the fire by tweeting out this earlier today:

Although this is not a confirmation by any means, it does seem to spell out that Johnson will portray either Black Adam or Captain Marvel (since, you know, Superman's already covered by Henry Cavill).

So who should he play? I submit that the choice is obvious and he should be Black Adam. Why? There are predominantly four reasons.

1. Resemblance

Name as many actors that look like they are a jacked up Egyptian similar to Black Adam. Now go ahead and name as many tall, muscular white guys that are out there. Which list is longer? The Rock.

2. Financial Options

If The Rock is the villain in the piece, he may not necessarily have to be in as many films. Whomever is cast as Billy Batson is likely going to be signed to a multi-picture deal so he can appear in Justice League or any number of sequels and spinoffs. If you can cast someone who is not as big of a name for Batson, you can get him much cheaper and save a lot of money in the long run.

3. It's Something Different

Johnson is charismatic and easy to like, which helps him pull off the heroic roles very well. But if you're a fan of professional wrestling like myself (insert shameless plug for Smark Out Moment), then you know that the birth of The Rock as a character came from his transition as a babyface (hero) to a heel (villain). He is just as talented at pulling off the evil asshole, which is not something that he does in his films that often. Having him portray the villain in this would help his career out so he isn't typecast as only being the titular semi-comedic hero in his future films.

4. Captain Marvel is Beneath Him

What? Blasphemy!! Captain Marvel is a classic character! Blah blah blah. The truth of the matter is that Captain Marvel is NOT a huge player for the mainstream audiences. If we are to assume that the Justice League film will have a heroic team that consists of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman, and Captain Marvel—with the possibility that the rumors are true and Martian Manhunter, Catwoman, and others can appear—then who do you think will get the bulk of the screen time? There is a pecking order, and there are clear and obvious tiers. Superman and Batman are on equal playing grounds, which is why they have a film dedicated to the two of them. Wonder Woman rounds out the trinity and is the female lead, which cannot be ignored. Green Lantern and The Flash are the next two members of the core five, with Cyborg, Aquaman, and Captain Marvel all taking a backseat. Think of it in comparison to Avengers, with Iron Man and Captain America filling in the Superman and Batman spots, Thor with Wonder Woman, Hulk and Black Widow with the amount of screen time as Flash and Green Lantern. Captain Marvel is, at best, at the same importance as Hawkeye was in the film. At worst, he would be in the position that Erik Selvig or Maria Hill has. The Rock is a much bigger star than this and there's no way that the film should be compromised by adding more Captain Marvel just to appease his contract.

Don't get me wrong—if Johnson ends up portraying Billy Batson, I won't necessarily be mad. DC can do far worse than casting him. However, I think it will be a mistake in the grand scheme of things. But that is only my opinion and this could all go the opposite route this weekend as more news breaks from San Diego Comic-Con 2014.

Who would you rather The Rock portray in the film? Who would you cast as the other character?
Tell us your ideas in the comments below!

Director Joss Whedon teased at the San Diego Comic Con that another major female will be joining the likes of Black Widow, Maria Hill, and Scarlet Witch in his Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Will Captain Marvel join the Avengers?
SDCC exclusive posters

With the entire cast due in Hall H for the major Marvel Studios panel on Saturday, you can be sure they will be delivering some major news.

"There are four prominent female roles in the center of the movie and I think a more balanced presence throughout the movie," Whedon told HeyUGuys in an interview.

Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel is rumored to be making her big screen debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, so with that in mind, will she be the fourth? Whedon didn't reveal much in the short interview but did note that the character is one of his favorites.

In theaters May 2015, The Avengers: Age of Ultron will once again reunite Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson. Joining the cast will be James Spader, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olson, Thomas Kretschmann, and Paul Bettany.

What do you think? Will Captain Marvel be the fourth female in the lineup? Check back for more Comic Con news and let us know what you think in the comments below.

While the critically acclaimed Batman: Zero Year runs its final issue this week, writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo have no intentions of leaving Gotham's hero anytime soon.

Batman: Endgame isn't the end of writer Scott Snyder

Snyder revealed his new project at San Diego Comic Con, Batman: Endgame, and despite the title, it won't be his end.

"I thought you guys would be sick of me at this point!" he said to a room full of fans at his SDCC panel. "But I have more stories. The way I write itit's Batman, you have to do the biggest stories ever. So I have a couple more of those in my head, and if you guys will keep me I'll do them. Greg is signed up through 50 already, and I'm not leaving my Gotham brother behind."

Snyder went on to say he would also love to work on Wonder Woman and Captain America.

Batman: Endgame will start on Issue #35 in October.

It's only day one of San Diego Comic-Con 2014, and Microsoft has given fans something they've been waiting on for quite some time: the official trailer for the original live-action show Halo: Nightfall. Based on the video game franchise of the same name, the show will have the famed Ridley Scott as the executive producer. "With Halo: Nightfall, we're pioneering a new medium in terms of interactive storytelling on Xbox," says Scott.

Mike Colter (Million Dollar Baby, Men in Black III) will star as Jameson Locke, a character who will also be a part of the upcoming video game Halo 5: Guardians. Today at SDCC, 343 Industries confirmed that Locke would be a playable character in the game but did not declare if he would be "friend or foe" of Master Chief.

Halo: Nightfall will stream to Xbox Live users on November 11, 2014. It will also be available as part of the upcoming re-release of Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

What do you think of the trailer? Will you be watching? Let us know in the comments below and be sure to stay tuned to Fanboys Anonymous for more SDCC news all weekend!

short ears Batman cowl Affleck face pictureSan Diego Comic-Con has started and we have our second and clearer look at Ben Affleck's Batman, with pictures of his full costume and a nice closeup of his cowl.

Some may say that it is rather underwhelming, as it is simply a standard picture of a good looking guy's chin in a Batman cowl. The end, right?

I, on the other hand, disagree. I think there is more to this to talk about than just saying "cool".

For a while, people have speculated that the suit would be the classic gray and blue, rather than black or dark gray. That rumor has been put to rest, which makes me incredibly happy. I'm not the type of person that thinks "classic" automatically translates to "the best." Would you ever really buy the idea of a blue Batman being intimidating?

gray Batman suit Ben Affleck Comic-Con 2014This photo also keeps the somber tone of the first look of Affleck in the costume, which birthed the Sad Batman meme. While I'm sure this new picture is going to be put to use in the same method, it's still good to see that The Dark Knight is staying dark. You never quite know when the producers will get the itch again to go into the campy route, and although Zack Snyder didn't hint at that in any way, it's always something to keep in the back of your mind.

The full-body shot of the suit shows off the material that it is made up of, which appears to be more of a fabric than any kind of armored plating or rubberized armor as we've seen in the previous seven films. This is more in line with the comic books, which should please those that are looking for the traditionalist in them to be pleased.

My primary gripe is not the material of the suit, but merely one aspect of it: the logo. It looks less like a bat to me and more like a big stain on the chest, which is disappointing, considering how there are dozens of designs of that logo that looks fantastic and any of them could have easily been incorporated into the design.

All in all, I'm extremely pleased with what we've been given. While I'm still incredibly nervous about the movie, after Man of Steel was a letdown and things like Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor are making me doubt that it is headed in the right direction, at least the Batman side of things has been a home run so far.

What do YOU think of the newest Bat-suit? Does it help ease your anxiety about Ben Affleck taking on the role? Are those ears just too damn short for your liking? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!
