Breaking Bad: "Granite State" Review

Posted by Ronnie Brown - Sunday, September 22, 2013

Welcome to New Hampshire, the "Granite State"! That's right, we've taken a huge step towards catching up to those flash forwards sprinkled throughout season 5 in what was admittedly a weaker episode than last week's, but that was bound to happen. If you go into this episode expecting "Ozymandias" part 2, you're going to be disappointed. But if you take it for what it is- showing the fallout of last week while putting everything in place for the series finale- it was an extremely effective hour of television. Where "Ozymandias" left us completely emotionally drained, "Granite State" just had a heavy sadness weighing over the whole thing, and it also contained one of the darkest moments in the history of the series- but more on that later.

We immediately got to see the fallout of everything from last week, and the best part about it was we finally got to meet Ed the disappearer! He wasn't really what I expected, but then again I don't know what I really expected. Looking back on him now though he was perfect. In a fantastic mirroring of Walt's menacing "We're done when I say we're done" moment from last year, he tried to bully Saul into going with him to New Hampshire, but the lung cancer stopped him in his tracks and sent him into a horrible coughing fit. The great Heisenberg truly has fallen.

For me, one of the most heartbreaking aspects of this episode is even though Walt's menacing phone call last week was meant to free Skyler by making her seem completely innocent, the cops are still after her and will stop at nothing to take her down unless she can give them Walt, whose name and face are now nationally known. Since she couldn't, the house was repossessed and, as Ed informed Walt, it became kind of a tourist attraction for kids, so the city put up a fence around it. That explains the appearance of the house in the flash forward scenes. It was also amazing mirroring when the scene with Skyler in the deposition greatly resembled Walt receiving his initial cancer diagnosis back in the first episode of the series (the high pitched noise drowning everyone out, someone asking if he/she understood what they just said, etc).

This episode finally showed that everyone will indeed remember his name.
The sadness REALLY kicked in starting with Jesse. After rather brilliantly managing to escape his cage and getting caught, Jack decided to punish him. And what an awful, awful punishment it was. Todd luring Andrea out of her house and shooting her in the back of her head while forcing Jesse to watch from the nearby truck was so heart-wrenching for us as an audience to watch, especially since Jesse originally broke up with Andrea to keep her away from this business. Then thinking about how Brock would discover his mother dead on the doorstep the next morning makes it even worse.

After that brutal scene, the episode jumped forward a few months, meaning now we're extremely close to the flash forward scenes showing Walt's 52nd birthday. Here is where I felt more sympathy for Walter White than I had in a long time; he had lost a drastic amount of weight, to the point where his wedding ring would no longer fit on his finger (excellent symbolism of that sliding off too), and he was so desperate for human contact in that cabin that he begged Ed to stay longer and bribed him with $10,000 to do so. He also didn't even have the spirit left to try to find a vein to inject the chemotherapy into. This truly is a broken man. Then even his endeavor to "Ensure" his family had a better future (I'm so sorry for the terrible joke, please don't stop reading) blew up in his face, with his son telling him off and to just die already; again, great callback to season 1 when Junior said basically the same thing, albeit in a drastically different way.

Finally in the end we got to see Heisenberg return. It seemed that Heisenberg was dead and Walter White was about to die with him, ready to turn himself in and get caught in that bar. Leave it to Breaking Bad to surprise me because the absolute LAST people I would've ever expected to see were Gretchen and Elliot. We know that Grey Matter has been a sore spot for Walt since the beginning, but hearing the two of them reduce his contribution to the company down to the name and nothing else was too much for Walt to bear. When Gretchen said that the man everyone knew long ago was gone, that reinvigorated Walt. He realized she was right; Walter White is gone and Heisenberg remains. And Heisenberg would not go out with a whimper. He'd go out with a bang.

"Remember, there's still the kid."

  • I decided to save that image for this section because I just feel so bad for the poor guy. He's been through so damn much and I really hope he can make it out of this okay, but I'm not holding my breath.
  • Todd is really the world's nicest sociopath, from giving Jesse ice cream to telling Andrea "it's nothing personal" even to his intense scene with Skyler (orchestrated by Lydia) in the White House.
  • I really hope that wasn't Saul's last appearance in the series. It very well could be and I don't feasibly see how he could come back from Nebraska, but I still have some hope. Saul deserves a much grander exit.
  • The show got two "fucks" this season. Vince Gilligan and others have said numerous times in the past that AMC gives them one "fuck" a year, so they try to make it count when someone says it. I guess AMC was more generous in the final eight episodes, since Hank got to say it last week and Jesse got one in this week. Both were so effective.
  • Of all the things I want to see answered next week, close to the top of the list would have to be will Huell ever get out of the DEA safe house?! Hank was supposed to come back for him and never did...
  • Finally, congratulations to Anna Gunn (Skyler) for her well-deserved Best Supporting Actress Emmy for last year's episodes! And congratulations to everyone involved for the outstanding drama series Emmy! It's about time! I'm so disappointed that Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul didn't win, but I'm so happy for Anna and the show itself. You all deserve it.
So there you have it. The end is almost here. The use of the extended Breaking Bad theme at the end of "Granite State" and the excellent despite showing no new footage trailer for the series finale have gotten me so incredibly pumped for the finale. I'm personally glad that this episode wasn't nearly as emotionally devastating as "Ozymandias" so we could get a chance to recover, but I'm sure the finale won't be so kind. So come back next week for the last time and join me for "Felina!"

Hiroshi Yamauchi Passes Away at 85

Posted by Travis Goss - Thursday, September 19, 2013

Hiroshi Yamauchi, former president of Nintendo, passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, of pneumonia at the age of 85.

From turning a company who manufactured playing cards and various toys into one of the most popular and well known video gaming companies in the world, Yamauchi helped save the gaming industry from total collapse.

According to Reuters:

Yamauchi was the third-generation head of the family-run business, founded in the ancient Japanese capital of Kyoto in 1889 as a maker of playing cards, and served as president from 1949 until 2002. He was an executive adviser to the company at the time of his death.

With the launch of the Family Computer (better known as the Famicom, the Japanese version of the Nintendo Entertainment System) and the Game Boy, Yamauchi solidified Nintendo's place in the world of video gaming entertainment.

We here at Fanboys Anonymous are indeed saddened by the loss of this major gaming icon.

Thank you, Yamauchi-san.

Bayonetta Has a Movie From Gonzo

Posted by Jeremy Kahn

At the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) it was announced that studio Gonzo would be releasing an animated Bayonetta movie. There has been rumblings for quite sometime that a CGI movie featuring the magic haired witch was in the works. It seems that along the way to become a animated feature, some of these plans have changed, as the movie is now being done in 2D animation resembling the design sketches released alongside the original game.

Early designs for sexy video game character who has magic hair, named Bayonetta
Gonzo, for those that need remembering, is the studio behind such titles as Kiddy Grade and Full Metal Panic! How much involvement Sega has with this movie is unknown at this time as currently they appear to have dropped the IP. The sequel, Bayonetta 2 for the Wii U, is being mostly handled by Nintendo. Still, for Bayonetta fans, this news does prove good as a movie will help push Bayonetta into the public eye more, acting as good publicity. Hopefully, this will result in more sales of the game, eventually garnering even more sequels.

Currently this movie is pegged for Japan with no plans for a western release. Hopefully, someone like Funimation will pick up the rights and bring it over. If this were to happen, would any of you be interested, or do you think this IP should stick just to the game world?

Atlus is Now Officially Part of the Sega Family

Posted by Unknown - Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Anyone who has been a fan of the Persona series or the Megami Tensei series knew about the issues that Atlus, the company who created these series, was going into this Fall. With parent company Index Corp. filing for bankruptcy, these series along with all of the other ones that Atlus creates were in deep trouble and that their futures were in questioned. However, earlier this week, sunshine and good news was given to all of us Atlus fanboys out there! the news was that Sega bought out Index Corp. for a whopping 14 billion Yen, or 141 million dollars, and with this news the future of Atlus was saved! Now that this is out there, we can all feel good knowing that the ever so precious Persona 5 will continue its development (even though very little news has been given on this since 2011/2012). Peace has been restored to the world, and I can now return to playing Persona 4 Golden and drinking my hot cocoa. So with that, I'll end this with a very cute picture.

Judge dredd comic book movie adaption dredd campaign for a sequelA healthy gathering of folk have decided that everyone’s favorite stoney-faced lawman deserves another shot. An ongoing petition and full out campaign has been raging for months now in an effort to try and convince the industry big wigs to pursue making a sequel to the Judge Dredd comic book movie adaption simply titled Dredd. Today (September 18th) has been dubbed the “day of action” referring to a coincidence of the release of this month’s Judge Dredd Magazine and the newest 2000AD prog and supporters of the cause are calling out for individuals to buy copies of the DVD, Blu-Ray, and stream Dredd on Netflix in an effort to keep it on the bestselling charts. The entire fiasco is being referred to as #MakeDreddASequel.

To clarify, this isn't your Sylvester Stallone with his infamous lip quivering, spittle spewing ,“I am the law” 1995 disaster. This Dredd, dutifully portrayed by Star Trek famed actor Karl Urban, is a no-holds-barred cage fight for the Mega-City One enforcer and a superior film in every way. Personally, I didn't think that Urban had the chin for the position, but his gruff disposition came out in spades and more than made up for his lack of jaw. The film itself is a dumbed down sci-fi, action flick that gets straight to the action and suits the Judge’s take no prisoners personality just fine. Accompanied by rookie Judge Anderson, played by the lovely Olivia Thirlby, the duo take on an entire apartment building worth of stooges to get to Ma-Ma, a drug-dealing doozy, and bring her to justice.

Movie version of judge dread played by karl urban being grumpy

The comic book Dredd is published by Rebellion in their weekly magazine 2000AD and has been an ongoing title since 1977. Rebellion, which is a UK owned and operated company, does most of their business on that side of the Atlantic with their core audience residing in the UK and South Africa. In 1990 a dedicated Judge Dredd Magazine started printing and other incarnations followed including a number of DC spin-offs, a Judge Dredd/Aliens and Predator crossover and even a tussle with Marvel's Punisher. Most recently IDW has started their own Judge Dredd run featuring a young Dredd in his first year of law enforcement.

a collection of judge dredd comic covers including judge dredd vs batman

From his inception, Judge Dredd has been the faceless symbol of justice. He is an incorruptible force of righteousness executing swift and merciless sentencing to all who oppose the peace and well-being of Mega-City One. Dredd has been written as both ruthless and at times ultra-violent, but has never deviated from the lawful path even when it’s the law that stands in his way. He is one of the few characters in history to claim such virtuoso. The most striking thing about him though is the fact that the character is written as existing in real time. That is to say, time passes in our world at the same pace as in 2000AD’s Judge Dredd strip which would put Judge Dredd as being over 70 years old! Pretty spry for an old timer.

A panel with judge dredd shooting creeps
Currently the petition for #MakeDreddASequel stands at 80,000 strong which is an outstanding number showing how the film’s cult following and geek community can come together to accomplish big things. Rebellion and 2000AD invite everyone who supports the cause to head here and sign the petition. Ideas have been thrown around already about a possible new threat for Judge Dredd in the film-verse and even Karl Urban has voiced a desire to see the lawman go against the terrible Dark Judges. With this much hype behind it, how could the studios not make a sequel?

If you show an affinity for old stoney-face then drop me a line and don’t forget to run out to the store and pick yourself up a copy of Dredd on DVD or Blu-Ray, or if you are like me and already own it, try watching it on Netflix tonight and lend us geeks a hand.

I've had some time to digest Kick-Ass 2 (my reviewpoint here) and try to think about what I'd like to see in what should be an inevitable sequel to round out the trilogy, Kick-Ass 3. One of the main things is that I'd like to see a redemption for the character of Chris D'Amico, aka Red Mist / The Mother Fucker.

Watch Kick-Ass 3 Mother Fucker Screen Shots Kick-Ass 3 Spoilers
Really...can this face end up being evil in the end?

You might think this is an odd way to go, perhaps even impossible. After all, the last film had him not only killing his mother, but not caring about any of the other deaths around him (some of which he directly caused). Maybe he got his just service by being crippled and that's the end of the story - evil gets punished.

However, I think the character's arc almost demands that he return to the side of good. If he doesn't, what's left for him to do? Keep in mind that the movies don't exactly follow the comics, so we don't know what the storyline is going to be for the third film, but if they left him alive, they clearly have hopes that he will show up in some capacity.

In the first movie, he starts off sympathetic to Kick-Ass and legitimately seems to befriend him, but then his lust for power and to appease his father gets in the way, so he betrays Dave. The two fight and end up stalemating each other. In the second film, he has a motive of vengeance. Kick-Ass also has that same motive and wins. In the third film, he can't just want to get back at Kick-Ass for his deformity and then lose again, nor could he obviously be the one to kill Kick-Ass when he has no limbs.

With the likeability of this character and the general attitude that he's a fuck up, Chris D'Amico needs to do something in Kick-Ass 3 to turn back to the side of good.

They're opposite sides of the same coin - a phrase often used to describe Joker/Batman, Superman/Luthor, etc. What's more interesting than when those two entities join forces?

If the story of Kick-Ass is that anyone can be a hero for any particular reason and in any fashion (exhibited by everyone from Dave's father sacrificing himself for his son, Colonel Stars and Stripes recanting his former criminal ways, etc), then the story needs to end with Dave inspiring someone who is bad to turn good, instead of just "another person that was wronged decides to become a superhero" like everyone else.

That is the ultimate victory. It's something that we can't see happen to Joker or Lex Luthor, as they're ongoing characters, but it can happen with Chris D'Amico.

Let's say that the third film focuses on his uncle, who was teased as being a legitimate brutal threat with a lot of pull, as the main villain. Chris should theoretically be on board to work with him for a while, but at the end, give up information or something that leads to his uncle's downfall and Kick-Ass's victory.

Maybe he sacrifices his life in the process. Maybe he doesn't. That depends on what's set up ahead of time.

But the bottom line is that it will fall quite flat if Chris D'Amico simply goes for another vengeance plot and ends up defeated. There's nothing to gain out of it.

What do you think about this possible option? Would you like to see it incorporated into Kick-Ass 3? What other ideas do you have for the next film?

Your laptop has crashed and refuses to boot the OS. The only option you have is to reformat the drive, losing all your non-backed up data in the process. Thankfully you have a external enclosure for your SATA drive. However, when you try to access the files you find out they're inaccessible due to being registered to the non-bootable laptop. How do you get around the problem? This tutorial will teach you.

First things first. Connect the SATA drive (drive A) to your backup computer. Or, if you have another drive (drive B) laying around, put your OS on that and use it to boot up the previously mentioned laptop. Once you have a working laptop, attach the SATA drive (drive A) you wish to get the files off of and find the folders you wish to copy over.

Straight copying won't work, nor will trying to access to the folders. You'll need to right click on the folder you wish to gain access to then select "Properties" from the drop down menu. Now, go to the "Security" tab located on the top of the new window.

Step 3

Click the user account you wish to give permissions to. Make sure the check-box next to, "Replace owner on sub-containers and objects" is selected. Click apply and a dialog box should open which will give permissions to all the files within the folder/location you which to access.

Once this process is done, you'll be asked to close the properties window then reopen it to view the changes made. Do this to verify if the permission we're successfully changed to the new laptop user. From here, you should have complete control over the folders you wish to access.

Week in Geek: September 12-18, 2013

Want to know what happened the past few days in nerd culture? WEEK IN GEEK is your quick fix to catch up with the rest of the fanboys out there.

Nerdy current events in geek culture for this week

MOVIES

The new Terminator film has been pushed back several days from June 26th to July 1, 2015.

My take: Just please don't screw this up...

Terminator may take a few more days to get here, but apparently Arnold Schwarzenegger could end up being the villain in Avatar 2.

My take: This could be awesome or horrible, but if James Cameron thinks its a good idea, I shouldn't doubt the man.

Jack Black will be starring in a GOOSEBUMPS movie.

My take: Say Cheese and Die? Bad Hare Day? Egg Monsters from Mars? What is it going to be? Probably awful, but hey, Goosebumps was a big part of my childhood, so that's kind of cool.

VIDEO GAMES

Mighty No.9 reached its goal for consoles.

My take: You'd think Capcom would realize that people would like more Mega Man games after this, right?

HOLLYWOOD

Mark Wahlberg finally graduated high school after completing online courses to get his degree.

My take: Good for him. Nobody should drop out of high school and everyone should always try to learn new things.

Watch out for this segment each and every Wednesday. We'll see you next week!

Dog & Scissors Episodes 1-3 Review

Posted by Jeremy Kahn

We've had it pretty good these last couple of seasons in regards to anime with this recent one probably being the best one yet. Among all the shows, there are bound to be ones you might miss or overlook. Dog and Scissors is one of these. I'll try my best to avoid spoilers, but be aware, there might be a few things in the following that can be considered spoiler territory.

watch Scary anime tsundere yandere girl be mean to little dachshund dog legally on streaming site CrunchyRoll not through torrents
Insert random neuter joke.

Episodes 1-3 sets up the show's premise. After a being killed by a robber while trying to protect a woman, Kazuhito heads off to the afterlife. During his spiritual journey, he begs to live so he can read his favorite novelist's last book which has yet to be written. Somehow his pleads are hear and he's brought back to life...as a dachshund.

Making matters more interesting, he's then adopted by the same woman he was killed saving. In a coincidental turn of events, this woman turns out to be his favorite novelist, Natsuno Kirihime. Now, as a dog he can't talk, yet Kirihime can somehow understand his thoughts. Aside from her and her editor, no one can understand Kazuhito.

If this premise sounds weird already, just wait as the show starts leaning into harem territory by introducing new girl after girl, even a overprotective, crazy little sister type. Of course, the only woman for Kazuhito is Kirihime who is the perfect yandere/tsundere type. She subtly expresses her feelings for this dog who's about as thickheaded as they come and only cares about books. Yes, he's a neet. A book otaku. Only caring about the 2D. We catch a glimpse of the place where he lived as a human and, as to be expected, he went so far as to rent a separate apartment just for his books.

Getting back on track, episode two finishes the first episodes story by having Kirihime and Kazuhito track down the robber that killed Kazuhito. From this confrontation with Kazuhito's killer we get a glimpse at how Kirihime's books influence other people. This actually drives home the message on how impactful books are in our lives. This point in the episode is something that pops up repeatedly over the course of the series. Further proving how important books are to us as humans.

Episode three is mostly there to serve as an introduction to Kazuhito's sister and Kirihime's editor. Kirihime being a sadist, we get the opposite side of things with her editor who is a masochist. One thing I forgot to bring up yet is Kirihime's trademark scissors. She always carriers around with her these pair of scissor which she's not afraid to use on annoyances or on a certain thick headed, loudmouth dog.

There's a lot of humor within these first three episodes as well as great set-up for things to come. What comes off as some weird beastality, erotica show, just happens to have a pretty good story to tell. So, if you're looking for something really out there to watch, or want a break from the norm, take a look at Dog & Scissors. Now streaming on CrunchyRoll.

Always one to take an opportunity by the reins, I've started work on a script for this year's Top Cow Talent hunt. This is the second year they have held this illustrious competition and if you have any inkling of being in the comic book industry as either a writer or an artist, I would highly recommend you look it up here. That being said, how are you supposed to write a story for a universe you know nothing about? In doing my due diligence, I took to the internet and my local comic book shop to try and educate myself, and there I stumbled across a gem: Cyber Force. More specifically, 2012's re-launch of the series.

Presenting Cyber Force To The Masses featuring sexy chicks in hot situations

If you haven't heard of Top Cow before, that's OK; neither had I. Top Cow is the publisher of the infamous Witchblade series and The Darkness which has also been adapted into a line of video games. It's helmed by Mark Silvestri who penned the original Cyber Force comics and is one of the earliest offshoots of the well-known Image comics imprints.

Top Cow Home To Witchblade Cyberforce and The Darkness

Also, if you haven't heard of Cyber Force, I don't blame you. While it's been one of the company's flagship titles, it's never elevated itself above the status of being just another poorly executed super hero team up book. It follows an assembly of cybernetic enhanced stooges fighting the forces of the evil mega corporation Cyberdata. I'm sure there are fans that would dispute my distaste, but perhaps I'm just turned off by how superb the new series is. In comparison, there is no comparison.

The Very First Appearance of The Cyber Force in action
Their humble origins.

The newest incarnation of the Cyber Force is brought to you once again with Mark Silvestri as co-writer, who will be joined by Matt Hawkins in creating what they are calling a "bio-cybernetic steampunk" in a "cutting edge world based on real technology." Most notable additions to the team however is the art department. Khoi Pham of Mighty Avengers, Hercules, and Daredevil fame is turning out some of the most squee-inducing pages in print at this moment, and if you aren't getting lost in his elegantly crafted character designs then you're probably appreciating the color contributed by his partner in crime, Sunny Gho. In all seriousness, this is a pretty series with plenty of eye candy to be found.

You don't have to know anything about Top Cow or it's universe to pick up and read this installment of the Cyber Force which is probably the best part about it. It's neatly self-contained so all you need to do is grab your copy and start flipping. Thus far, we've found our ragtag group of cyborg degenerates and defunct military models hiding in the underbelly of the big city just trying to get by. They live under constant threat by their previous employer, a military conscription and black ops firm known as the CDI. It's when Caren, daughter to CDI's president, stumbles upon their hideout that things get all shaken up and ends in an all-out battle for survival and the future of mankind as a whole. The new story reinvents the primary cast giving them a new livelihood, and trims the fat right off the top. It's a clever and gritty adaption to the original series that offers plenty of room to grow and develop.

Taken from Issue #3 of Cyber Force

In a surprise move, this series is also currently available absolutely free thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign that concluded its funding August 17, 2012. It raised a respectable $117,134.00 with 1,419 backers and offered incentives ranging from "internet high-fives " at the $10.00 level, to a three day, two night all expenses paid vacation to Disneyland and a chance to meet Silvestri, Hawkins and the rest of the Top Cow clan in Los Angeles for a measly $10,000.00 (which unsurprisingly went unclaimed).

You can follow the complete first five issue arc by downloading the DRM free PDF here, and then after you are thoroughly hooked, head on down to your local comic book shop to reserve your copy of issue #6 which is coming out this Wednesday (September 18, 2013).

A Successful Kickstarter Campaign for Cyber Force and a win for crowd funding and comic book fans everywhere

If you are a fan of the original and think I'm out to lunch or have any ideas on what I should write about in this script to knock Top Cow's socks off, leave me a comment and I'll be sure to take it into consideration.

Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has recast the part of Peter Parker and found their new Spider-Man in Justin Matthew Sargent, who was apparently an alternate for the role previously before being upgraded to replace Reeve Carney.

Hot Justin Matthew Sargent Shirtless Nude Sexy

Before you ask, the answer is no: Carney is not leaving due to an injury. Rather, he has been cast in an upcoming Showtime series called Penny Dreadful.

I've yet to see Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and to be perfectly honest, I more than likely never will. Although the idea behind it was intriguing to me and I thought there was a chance they could pull it off, this production has just been one problem after another.

Hopefully, Sargent will do a good job and luck will be on his side.

What do you think about this casting choice? For that matter, what do you think of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark in general?

Breaking Bad: "Ozymandias" Review

Posted by Ronnie Brown - Sunday, September 15, 2013

"I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

I now fully understand why this episode of Breaking Bad was named after that Percy Shelley poem. And I wish I didn't. This is going to be a short review because I'm both physically and emotionally drained and have so much other stuff to do tonight, but here it is.

That was, without a doubt, one of the best episodes of any television show I've ever seen. It completely shattered all of my expectations, and the fact that I'm still devastated an hour later really says a lot.

R.I.P. Hank and Gomez
I can say that the transition from the flashback that opened the episode to the aftermath of the shootout was beautifully done and definitely one of my favorites in the entire series. Seeing Gomez dead, though expected like I said last week, was still rough, and the matter-of-fact way that Hank was killed was a brutal moment that was very difficult to recover from. I expected Hank to die in this episode, but not like that. I thought- no, HOPED- that Hank would make it out of the shootout alive, but it's actually a much better story point that he didn't. And it was still in the first few minutes of the episode! Then seeing Jesse's ultimate fate, being chained up to be a slave after suffering a (thankfully unseen) brutal beating, was almost worse than it would've been for Jesse to die right there in the desert. But the episode pressed on.

Once Junior found out about everything, it was obvious nothing good could happen anymore. Sure enough, one of the most shocking scenes in the episode was the confrontation between Walt and his family. What really surprised me was how physical it all was, and then Skyler actually made contact with the knife. Walt realizing that he had completely lost his family was actually an upsetting moment, but at this point he really did get what he deserved. I should probably see a therapist if I can still feel any sympathy for Walter White at all, but this is not about any of my possible mental problems.

Walter White truly has nothing left. Like the poem says and like Vince Gilligan promised in last week's Talking Bad, we definitely looked upon Walt's ("Ozymandias's") works and despaired. His empire has truly crumbled now, and that final phone conversation between Walt and Skyler was astonishing. Walt said the worst things he's ever said to anyone to his wife of all people, and as awful as they were, I maintain that Walt didn't truly mean a word of what he was saying. He most likely didn't believe Skyler when she said that no cops were involved, and he said the things he did because he knew he had to go for broke and cut all ties with his family while helping to save Skyler by making her seem far more blameless and ignorant than she actually was. We saw how upset he got by the end of that conversation, so of course he still loves them more than anything, but he did what was best for them by making himself seem like even more of a monster than he actually is, and it seemed to me like Skyler picked up on what he was doing too. Finally, Walt riding off with the "disappearer" was a pretty chilling end to one hell of a rough episode, and since Walt's fake identity is from New Hampshire, the Granite State, and next week's episode is called "Granite State," it seems like we'll finally catch up to those cryptic flash forwards.

Random Thoughts

  • The only thing that disappointed me actually had nothing to do with the episode itself. Like I said last week, IMDB had lots of dead characters listed in the cast, which was very intriguing, so it was pretty disappointing to see that IMDB was misinformed and none of those characters actually appeared. Oh well, that's what I get for believing something I saw on the internet.
  • I also thought it was interesting that for the first time in the history of the series, the cast and crew credits were actually placed in act 2, almost halfway through the episode, instead of in act 1 after the teaser scene. Good choice there because seeing random names would've taken away from the intensity of act 1.
  • Huge moment I decided to save for this: Jesse finally found out the truth about Jane! Anyone who has heard me talk about this show knows that I've hoped Jesse would find out about her somehow, but I did NOT see this one coming. Walt and Jesse's relationship was basically beyond repair, but if there was anything left at all, that revelation shattered it. So cold and cruel on Walt's part, and as stunned as Jesse was, he knows what Walter White is capable of, so of course he believed it. Also, poor Jesse. He's a slave who's had the shit beaten out him and has been forced to cook for Todd and Uncle Jack, and he has to look at that picture of Brock and Andrea so Todd and Uncle Jack can keep him in his place. I can only hope that when we catch up to the flash forward scenes, Walt uses that gun on Uncle Jack's crew and frees Jesse, but considering I'm sure Walt blames Jesse for Hank's death, I'm sure it won't be that easy.
  • What the hell was up with that dog at the very end that jumped off the side of the road? Is it symbolizing Walt being on his own now? Or maybe the dog was just as devastated as we were and couldn't take it anymore, so it wanted out. Clearly the latter is more likely.
I'm still reeling even after writing this review. The fact that there are still two episodes left baffles me; if so much can happen in one episode, how much story is really left to tell? That's really a superficial doubt though. I fully trust everyone behind Breaking Bad and I'm sure that these last two episodes will be one hell of a ride. I wish they wouldn't be as draining as this one was, but I know better. So let's all recover for the next week and nobody escape with the disappearer yet! Join me next Sunday night for "Granite State."
