Review: Amazing X-Men #11 by Kyle, Yost, Barberi, Wong and Rosenberg

"World War Wendigo" 4 of 5.

Crises in Canada: the population is being overrun by a rampant magic curse. A small group made up from Alpha Flight and the X-Men are making their way to the source the outbreak to quell the out-of-control curse.

We are closing into the final stages of Craig Kyle's and Christopher Yost's first arc on Amazing X-Men. The story so far has been interesting to read and a fun experience. It is achieving a much sought after goal for X-Men fans by rekindling the feel of team adventures from previous runs from the X-Universe.

This does pose some unique challenges to keep in mind. A contentious point for consideration is the use of characters from other series that seem to be doing very different things in Amazing X-Men from their respective solo series. Wolverine is at Death's door in another series, yet here he has been transformed into a Wendigo; Storm is in Africa with Forge; and Nightcrawler is returning from a tussle with the Crimson Pirates. There is so much going on in the X-Universe that it can get mind boggling to try and piece the threads all together in a meaningful way. The reconciliation of this could be as straight forward as a simple time swing, i.e. the events in Amazing X-Men are not coincidental to those of other Marvel series; rather, they are complementary to them.

Given the number of characters being used in the narrative, it is not surprising that there is only so much space to dedicate to each. This balance must be struck by Kyle and Yost with Carlo Barberi to show a visually appealing story that captures all points of conflict. This is achieved, but it does mean the subplots are transitory as a result with characters moving in and out of the main plot.

Avengers in Amazing X-Men stoping Wendigo
The Avengers lend a helping
hand against the Wendigo.
The subplots are nicely tied in for Amazing X-Men #11. It is great to see this as we are pulled into the final issue. Yost and Kyle are beginning to wrap up their narrative and doing so by exploding open the conflict driving the main plot. Canada's problem has just spilled over into the USA and, from there, can go elsewhere.

For this, I don't feel there is a dominant character driving forward the narrative; the issue is more plot driven. However, it is nice to see the development of Northstar in comparison to his sister. It is telling that his time with the X-Men has matured his outlook on life and the role of superheroes. There seems to be a theme here with the role of Iceman being played up instead of just being a comedic relief for the more serious Wolverine or Storm. We are seeing sidelined characters come to the foreground in important ways.

This is supported by the art from Barberi, Walden Wong, and Rachelle Rosenberg. The colors from Rosenberg are reminiscent of the expected real-life settings of the Canadian wilderness. It is also nice to see the representation of the Spirit realm. Barberi, Wong, and Rosenberg bring to life the "beasts" of folklore with dramatic purpose. The conflict ensuing is displayed in a hectic manner to show the struggle for supremacy that is being wrought by Tanaraq.

The storytelling method is simple and effective for Amazing X-Men #11. Full-page shots are used to bring about the main point of focus for the page. This is then supported by various inserted panel shots to drive the story in the direction desired. The panels clearly bordered to ensure readability is paramount. There were a couple of dialogue pieces in this issue that I had to re-read to make sense, but I didn't find this detracting from the overall narrative, yet it did pause the pacing a little.

I have been reading Amazing X-Men for nearly a year now. It has been a great series and I am looking forward to the conclusion of the second arc with the next issue. What have you liked about it so far? Given the major events happening now or coming up from Marvel, what do you hope to see coming up in the series? Let us know and leave your thoughts below.

Storm and Forge Africa Marvel
Storm #3 Cover by David Yardin
So far Storm has saved a village from a tsunami and fought an old nemesis, so what's next for this heroine?

In Storm #3, Grek Pak keeps us a little more grounded by introducing an old flame and playing up a romantic love interest angle. Not only this, but it all takes place somewhere a little more native to Storm: Kenya.

The setting is great as it allows artists Scott Hepburn and Rachelle Rosenberg to incorporate an earthy feel and color to this issue. Hepburn is a new penciller, who along with David Baldeon is filling in for Victor Ibanez.

Throughout the series thus far, Pak has been true to his word about exploring the inner workings of Storm as a character. Make no mistake about it, this is a heavily character-driven issue as a result. Pak is delving into who Storm is and showcasing what makes her tick by examining the various important roles and relationships intertwined with the character. There are moments throughout Storm #3 when it feels emotional and awkward, as it should. If you empathize with Storm or Forge and their situation, it is natural to feel such a way when reading this issue, and as a writer I suspect that this is what Pak wants you to do—to invest in the story.

Review of Marvel's Storm #3 by Greg Pak and Scott Hepburn
Scott Hepburn's splash page for Storm #3.
Given this, don't expect too much action in Storm #3. It is that type of issue. Pak is displaying a broad range of the spectrum that makes up Storm, and this issue is focused on her ability to be thoughtful, nurturing, and to foster relationships. As we lead into the aftermath of the Death of Wolverine series, this issue brings to the forefront an emotionalism which is sure to be ramped up in the next issue and made raw as a result of the intimate connection between Storm and Wolverine.

The art by Hepburn and Rosenberg continues the elemental feel established already in the series. Hepburn's style is clearly different to Ibanez's, but is complementary nonetheless. An aspect of this issue that stands out is the panel arrangement; Hepburn uses a less rigid form of panel presentation to tell the story with slightly more overlays and singlet character depictions without boarders. The flow of the story as a result is not as methodical and suits Pak's narrative.

Rosenberg brings a less gritty feel to the coloring on Storm #3, and this seems appropriate given the change of setting from the New York suburbs and underground of last issue to the plains of Africa. The sense of nature is positive and upbeat with a vibrant use of color to reflect this. Rosenberg's colors do well to highlight the different style Hepburn is bringing to this issue.

Review of Marvel's Storm #3 by Greg Pak and Scott Hepburn
Rachelle Rosenberg's colors are vibrant.

We are witnessing a building momentum on Storm that loosely interacts with other X-Men characters and stories. The focus here really has been on Storm so far, but I get the sense that this will change as we move through the Death of Wolverine and into AXIS. While the focus will not necessarily shift from the titular character, Pak will have to incorporate more of the ramifications of these events into the overall narrative. Despite this, the series is building along nicely and it will be fascinating to see where we are taken to down the path that Storm chooses to pave.

What did you think of Storm #3 and the series so far? How do you think Storm will handle the death of Wolverine? Let us know your thoughts and leave a comment below.

Week in Geek: September 24th, 2014

Posted by Jeff Penner

Want to know what happened the past few days in nerd culture? WEEK IN GEEK is your quick fix to catch up with the rest of the fanboys out there.

Nerdy current events in geek culture for this week
MOVIES

Deadpool Finally Happening!

My take: Even with a PG-13 rating, this movie could be as fun as Guardians of the Galaxy is. Though, a director's cut (pun intended) would be a great BluRay option down the road. If Fox is smart, they'll stay as true to the comic book as possible and avoid any iteration connected with X-Men Origins: Wolverine version. With the current state of the X-Men franchise, anything is possible right now and they should jump on it.

Retcon: Aquaman Saved Superman in Man of Steel?

My take: I call shenanigans on this. If Aquaman was there, why didn't he help with the oil rig disaster? Did he cause the oil rig disaster? They did mention Batman in the movie, so I'm fine with foreshadowing where intended but this seems to be be getting shoe horned into continuity.

Rumor: William Shatner to Appear in Star Trek 3.

My take: Ugh. Can we have a Star Trek movie that doesn't feature a member of the original cast anymore? I know there have been a few but aside from Star Trek: First Contact, they don't seem to know what to do with themselves. If you reboot a franchise, go full tilt. Though I appreciated what they did with the first one, timeline-wise, from a fanboy perspective, but it's poison long-term.

TELEVISION

Gotham Polarizes Fans on All Sides.

My take: For a pilot episode, I have to give the premiere of Gotham a pass, for now. Yes, it was a little over the top at times. Yes, everyone was introduced by name almost immediately after first appearing on screen. Yes, the villains are more likeable than the "good guys". Wait…where was I going with this? Oh, right, give it a season to see what they do. Fox has a bad history with keeping any floundering shows, so this will either disappear forever, or continue on Netflix (who already has the exclusive rights to the series).

Supergirl TV Show Greenlit?

My take: CBS's commitment to a Supergirl series is inspiring in a world that's lacking female-driven shows. It's when they don't know if they should call the show Super or Girl that makes me crunch my eyebrows and think "…just call it Supergirl, you dummies!"

Powers Showing Exclusive Footage at NYCC.

My take: If one series has a chance to sink or swim, Powers could be it. I love the original comic books series by Brian Michael Bendis, although I've lost track of it over the years. I can specifically recall thinking, about six issues in, that this would make a really great TV show. The super heroics are often seen off-panel, or done quickly enough that a budget could be reasonable. The plot, based around a hero who no longer has powers, is just screaming for a live action series. I'm definitely giving this a go when it comes out, it's crude, it's quirky and it rarely holds anything back. If they keep a similar format to the original series, it could easily step up the expectations game for superheroic fare.

COMIC BOOKS

DC's Multiverse Waaaay More Complicated Than You Thought.

My take: SPOILER ALERT If you're behind on DC and The New 52 and want to keep some mystery, don't read this paragraph. Also, don't look at the picture I have blatantly posted below. Okay, if you're still here, wow, DC needs to $#it or get off the pot! After successfully rendering a beautiful, cohesive universe from 1987 - 2011, known as the "post-Crisis" era, DC seems completely unsure of itself since rebooting again just a few years ago. Sure, stories like Zero Hour and Armageddon 2001 changed a few minor bits here and there but DC looks like it might be opening every playbook available, soon. I'm all for cleaning up some minor glitches from 2011's The New 52 launch that was loaded with inconsistencies across multiple books. However, now DC has revealed that every reality, every "Elseworld", every timeline, exists (and is seemingly accessible) in their new "Multiverse" format. The relaunch that was intended to attract new readers, and apparently failed, is now reverting to trying to make everyone happy, giving us access to whatever version of any character we want. How this will play out, and how much I'm over-reacting, is yet to be seen. The insinuation I'm blowing up about was revealed in the final pages of Superman Doomed #2 and Booster Gold: Futures End #1 this week.

Deathstroke Gets a Second Chance This October.

My take: A few months ago, DC apologized to retailers for pumping up Deathstroke in their animated features, as well as on Arrow, without having any cross-promotion items to sell. No toys. No books. Hence, this October he returns in a new series by Tony Daniel. I find him beneficial when played strictly as a mercenary, not so much as an anti-hero. I gave the first series a try and it was way too Punisher-like. He was always great as an enemy to the Teen Titans but now seems to get overused as the go-to villain when stakes need to be raised. Hopefully we see a spin that gives him new status as the badass he should be.

Death of Wolverine Begins.

My take: If you're going to get this book for anything, get it for Steve McNiven's art. I think this guy is amazing and will help make this series memorable. I don't follow the X-books too well, so I'm not sure how or when Wolverine lost his healing factor, but I like that he's concerned this time around. His death needs to be brutal because we've seen him beaten pretty bad in the past. Heck, just after Civil War he got blown up and burned clear down to his skeleton (it was just a flesh wound, of course). The scenes with him and Mr. Fantastic show that even his "friends" have their reservations about him, even helping him when he's down. I'm curious if they will be relieved he is gone or if they'll play up how "necessary" his tactics are (leading up to his inevitable return).

TECHNOLOGY

India's Mangalyaan Reaches Mars.

My take: At $75 million, India's satellite reached Mars and cost less than 1/5 of the recent Destiny video game's $500 million budget. As a fanboy, I'm all for home entertainment but I'm even more interested in studying the solar system.

The iPhone 6 is Bendable.

My take: The iPhone 6 has had some bad press this week and now it appears customers are learning what aluminum is. It's a malleable, lightweight material and the phones are bending in people's pockets. It could lead to a potential recall but, for now, just be careful!

Watch out for this segment each and every Wednesday. We'll see you next week!

Nintendo Super Mario Bros Costume Hoodie Zip-Up Sweatshirt Review

Posted by Anthony Mango - Monday, September 22, 2014

September 23rd will be the 125th anniversary of Nintendo (more specifically, since Fusajiro Yamauchi founded Nintendo Koppai on September 23, 1889, which was originally a production company for playing cards rather than the video game juggernaut it is today).

In honor of this occasion, TV Store Online is selling special Nintendo-themed hoodies exclusive to their shop based on four of the iconic video game characters: Mario, Luigi, Wario from the Super Mario Bros series and Link from the Legend of Zelda series.

TV Store Online Nintendo merchandise costume sweatshirts

I was able to get my hands on one of these (I chose Luigi as that guy doesn't get as much credit as he deserves, even if he saves Peach) and I was very pleased with the outcome. These hoodies are not knockoffs or cheaply made—the officially licensed Nintendo product stamp should be an indicator of that alone. They represent the true colors and the spirit of the characters they embody.

Not only are they comfortable, but they are also a fun way to express your geek cred and love for your favorite of the characters. The top of the hoodie is fashioned to look like each character's trademark cap (except Link, of course, who isn't cool enough to have a green hat with an L on it, as that's Luigi's territory), which is a nice little addition to help it stand out more as the character rather than just being the overalls.

Luigi product description:
Have you ever wanted to be just like Mario's brother? He may not have been the main hero, but that doesn't mean he isn't one of the coolest Nintendo characters of all time! If you want to show some love for Luigi, check out this officially licensed Nintendo hoodie. Featuring his overalls and green suit with the "L" logo on top of the hood, this Luigi hoodie should please just about any fan of the notable sidekick. Let the world know who your favorite video game character is with this awesome Super Mario hoodie!
So if you're interested in picking one of these up, head on over to TV Store Online and embrace the anniversary of the undisputed king of the gaming industry.

The next series on Must See TV by Fanboys Anonymous is another comic book adaptation. The Flash had the seeds planted for a series in The CW's Arrow last season, and it has had fanboys and fangirls excited for the idea of Barry Allen getting his own show. Developed by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, and the legend Geoff Johns, the series stars Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/The Flash), Candice Patton (Iris West), Rick Cosnett (Eddie Thawne), Tom Cavanagh (Dr. Harrison Wells), and Jesse L. Martin (Detective Joe West)

The interesting thing about this series is that The CW has gone with a bold move by not having it play after Arrow to get a strong lead. The Flash will stand alone on Tuesdays and will explore the life of the fastest man alive. In the golden age of comics will The Flash hold its own?

The premiere season of The Flash premieres premiere on October 7, 2014 on The CW.

Must See TV Fall 2014: Arrow Season 3

Posted by The Dace Man - Saturday, September 20, 2014

Spoilers and News on The CW's ArrowHey, hey, hey Dacetacular Nation! Chris "The Dace Man" Dace here to honor some of television's hit TV shows as we roll into the 2014/2015 season! Join me on this quest as I bring to you some must-see TV shows this year!

Next up on Fanboys Anonymous's Must See TV event is the gem of the CW Network. Arrow was developed by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg. It premiered on October 10, 2012 as part of The CW's line up and the answer to the departing Smallville. The comic-based show stars Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen), Katie Cassidy (Laurel Lance), David Ramsey (John Diggle), Willa Holland (Thea Queen), and Paul Blackthorne (Detective Lance).

Like every comic book show that makes its way to the digital media, I immediately gave it a shot, and over the past two seasons I was not disappointed. Arguably one of the greatest comic book adaptations on TV today, Arrow has packed a lot of punch and has greatly expanded the world of The Green Arrow! I eagerly look forward to this season as the producer teased Ra's Al Ghul's Arrow debut.

The third season of Arrow premieres October 7, 2014 on The CW.

Until the next time, for the few, the proud, and, of course, the Dacetacular, grab a beer—and in this case a TV remote—and check out what's going on here in the Dace-Sphere. See ya next time!

Listen live to The Dace Man Show every Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST on Mega Powers Radio.
