Week in Geek #20: Iron Fist Cancelled, Ric Grayson and More

Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.

This week in geek culture Fanboys Anonymous nerd recap

Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:

Bad Times at the El Royale

I wasn't super duper impressed, but I enjoyed myself. It's the type of movie that was good in the sense that I went into it wanting a fun night out, and since I have AMC A-List, I didn't feel like my money was wasted. However, if people were to ask if I would recommend it to them, I'd think twice about whether it's worth the time to really truly sit down and watch.

DC Titans Premiere

It's cheesy. It's unnecessarily dark.

Robin is awesome, but I don't like the story that Batman kills. He shouldn't. That's kind of the point. I don't know why they figured they'd go against that, but it speaks to them having a bad interpretation from the start and that doesn't give me much hope that they won't make other major errors.

Why the fuck is Starfire a killer, too? Is that something in the comics I'm unaware of, or is this just another example of them wanting everyone to be dark for the sake of it? Since Raven's story is so dark, I would have LOVED if Starfire's was actually bubbly and comedic and funny. That way, it could have offset the tone and brought something different to the table. I know Beast Boy has some potential for that, but I didn't get to see that in this. Then again, I didn't get to see much of anything in that part, because they purposely went super dark to try to hide the wonky CGI.

The girl playing Raven leaves a lot to the imagination and I hope she gets much better. Also, what's up with her forehead? Cheap shot, but that hair makes it so noticeable. Also, there wasn't enough of a setup for the "everything led me to you" plea between Rachel and Dick. Rushed and poorly done.

"So, you're not really, huh?" / "What?" / "An asshole." - dialogue like this exposes poor writing. Nobody talks like that with the setup. She would have said "So you're not really an asshole, huh?"

Why is this Detroit? I know they couldn't do Gotham, but why not Bludhaven?

This took two sittings to get through and I struggled both times. This show better change a lot of things in the next episode and onward, or this isn't going to be something I can truly enjoy.

Iron Fist Cancelled at Netflix

Makes sense. The series has struggled and they don't need these solo series. What they really should have been doing was combining things and doing Heroes for Hire from pretty much the start.

Supposedly, this may be revived on the Disney streaming service, but I don't know how that would really go about, and if it did, I'd hope they'd have a shorter episode run.

Also, supposedly, Danny will continue to pop up in other shows. Hm...weird.

Ric Grayson

He's no longer Dick Grayson. He's Ric Grayson. This made me chuckle, particularly as Batman just showed his dick in the comics, so it's weird timing. Look, everyone has made jokes about the name Dick for decades. Why is now the time to make a judgment call on saying no to that and changing it? I'm not opposed to Ric Grayson, and if it sticks, then I'm cool, but I'm just curious why they felt now is the time that it needed to happen rather than any other time.

Solo | A Derpfakes Story

Deepfakes are amazing. Of course, you can tell they're not the real thing, but take a look at this video where Alden Ehrenreich is replaced with Harrison Ford for Solo and tell me it doesn't somehow also still feel more natural?

Mega Sg

I don't talk much about gaming, as I'm not a gamer, but the idea of a relaunched Sega Genesis that plays 2,180+ games is a good idea...until you see that it costs $189.99 and it doesn't have any of the games. If this were the mini equivalent of the Nintendo and Super Nintendo and whatnot that they have going on, and it actually had all or most of those games, it would be a steal. That's not the case.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Delayed Until 2021

Ouch...that's a long, long time...and I'm not sure it's the best move. I trust Marvel for the most part, but they're not infallible and this may come back to bite them in the ass.
